Ricky did an awesome job of making everyone on that audience think in their heads "please dont be a joke on me next" hilarious stuff, people need to lighten up.
@sopcannon - Well, he certainly made audiences squirm. But celebrities? Anyway, he was quick and sometimes amusing; but his humour was not the least bit clever. He doesn't compare remotely to the brilliant Ricky Gervais.
The fact that this made Johnny and Ricky friends says everything about Johnny's character. The most down to earth person who never takes himself seriously. A real gem!
His thank god comment at the end of a thank you speech was to take the piss out of religious people of all denominations who love the say "thank you god" every time something good happens to them, as if their imaginary friend had anything to do with it. Like many people from the UK he finds those comments nauseating and cringeworthy. The "for making me an atheist" was, as some have pointed out, irony added on as a bonus to fill out the joke/dig. That the theists commenting on here can't even see the obviousness of the situation speaks volumes about the lack of clarity in their thinking.
2023 here! Legend, YES! Amazes me how I see the word 'joke' everywhere throughout the comments -- yet, in fact he told not even ONE really.... all truth!! That's WHY he is legend! Oh but rest assured, Ricky's best GG hosting, was his final appearance a couple years back (easy to find because of his repetitive "It's the last one, who cares" blurbs)... Ricky ROCKS!!!
I like Ricky because he’s funny not because he’s taking anyone down a peg. I don’t know these people. I don’t know Ricky. I don’t know who is or isn’t narcissistic. I don’t have a dog in this fight. I just want to laugh.
@Danny Dorko every person who owns an Instagram or Twitter account is to a degree narcissistic. It’s a master of how to be aware of it and curb that urge.
@Bella S. there was a joke from Tom Hanks? I am not sure about that... It did not look like Tom Hanks found any of Ricky Gervais jokes funny at all at any Golden Globes.
@Tom Doyle I know this is an old comment but I don't recall Tim Allen ever being "down" after Home Improvement. He's worked steady for decades. It's just that he's not Tom Hanks. Nobody is.
no. i posit that the delivery is not as important as the content and context. furthermore, i didnt see any of the butts of his jokes not laugh. wrong in every instance as i see it.
Yeah so I am usually repulsed by award shows but i happened to catch 2020 GG in a moment of weakness and solitude and now am on a marathon run of this guy. He is OUTrageous and scandalous! Brutal! and without the hint of any restraint or shred of mercy given the audience in front of him. Totally loving every cringe minute of it!!
Yeah, at first I was feeling bad for RDJ for Ricky's jokes about drug addiction and jail time. But then RDJ did his thing and, yeah, I don't feel so bad.
4browsing and that's exactly what it comes down to either caring about your fellow man or not...in your case and most americans you couldn't give a flying fuck about the rest of your countrymen because its all about the taxes, forget that in the USA you probably pay the lowest taxes in the whole of the western world...but that's ok because i am getting my free health care, i got my maternity leave, i got to go to university and didnt pay any fees, and i am in a job that i love...so you keep talking about your taxes and how you don't want to pay more...lets just hope you don't get sick and your insurance don't cover it! Selfish ignorant fuck!
4browsing I am sorry could you explain what you mean by so far left because i don't understand that concept. If you mean helping your fellow man/woman/child then i say go for it, if you mean equal pay for women i say go for it, if you mean free contraceptives for men and women i say go for it, if you mean free tuition fees then i would definitely say yes, we all need to work in good jobs, not down coal mines that will kill you or doing two jobs because 1 wont pay you even minimum wage then i say go for it, paying university fees puts a higher education out of the sphere of most middle class families. If you mean women get to choose what what want to do with their bodies without politicians being involved then i say go for it...the list is endless but here we are in the 21st century and people are still dirt poor and in some countries absolute poverty exists, children die by the 100's of 1000's each year and to be honest with you i dont see Trump being the slightest bit interested in that! I also dont believe there should be billionaires...being a billionaire gives them power over everyone else, they are dicator's but instead of shouting about their bad deeds they do it quietly! So if that makes me far left then i am all for it!
Binging his hosting nights after seeing him rip everyone this year. Dude is the man! And, also, I like that he has been with the same woman for about 30 years
They are very well-off. Often they don't even have to pay for anything because the publicity is worth so much more than the item(s) themselves. That to me is rich.
I like how Robert Downey Jr at around 9:00 was able to balance being a just as mean as Ricky without being weighed down by any of the wit and charm that help Ricky Gervais get away with it.
Ricky Gervais is the funniest host ever. He pisses the shit out of those Hollywood actors who haven't done nothing for the community. He did an awesome job of making everyone on that audience think in their heads "please don't be a joke on me next". Bring him back!!
Haha. Loved every second of it! Steve Carell was hilarious here as well, natural comedian he is. Nice to see at least someone able to laugh at oneself like that.
They realize that Ricky spices things up as no one else can, and gets people laughing, gets people watching. So, even with him being a little too honest, it's worth it in the end.
Rich, famous people are treated like their gods so it’s SO refreshing to see them bumped down a peg. Love Ricky and love the British sense of humor, us Americans could learn a thing or two
Robert Downey Jr. just sounded like someone seeing all the attention Ricky was getting and wanted some too. Ricky's funny when he does it. Robert is just cringey.
This man is thee only reason I would watch anything like this. Honestly, if it weren’t for KZclip, I wouldn’t of felt so good for missing this gifted Comedian. The saying: “If you can’t laugh at yourself...” applies to these actors he’s scorching. Own it cuz it’s the only reason someone other than the Cat Loving, Subaru Driving Leftist WOULD WASTE TIME WATCHING! Kudos RG 👍🏻
I'm genuinely fascinated by the reaction to Gervais' routine because it's philosophically about the line between humor and cruelty - the line between "laughing at" and "laughing with." It's like Mel Brooks' famous quote: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." Also it's interesting in terms of seeing how so much of whether a comedian succeeds with his audience is whether he's "won them over". He was a relative unknown in terms of hosting shows and so the audience didn't have affection for him that they'd have for say, Steve Martin or Billy Crystal. So much of getting people to laugh along with you is simply appearing likeable and I think Ricky was received coldly because he just went straight for the jugular without "warming the audience up."
These are well accomplished (super) stars in hollywood. It's kicking upwards, so it becomes funny. Had he kicked downwards and made fun of people that are not considered to have reached the top, then it would be cruel. That's how I see it.
***** There in lies the issue. They need to lighten up and not be so self-concisous, worried whether they'll offend anyone because it may harm their career. They're just jokes, nothing to be taken seriously and nothing that has any consequence on their careers or relationships. But I acknowledge that was very likely the thought process of much of the audience. A lot of people did laugh though and Gervais hosted the awards show twice. The U.S media were the ones who reacted badly.
***** Well remember that all the people in the audience know each other or might have to work together in the future. So a lot of the awkwardness probably comes from being unwilling to be seen laughing at the expense of their colleagues even though they're laughing inwardly.
good comment. gervais is in a league of his own in terms of being offensive, so it'd be difficult to imagine this act being well received by any comedian.
The best host these bullshit awards shows have ever had. They knew what they were getting when they asked him to host and he no doubt delivered on their expectations.
@Polymathic Heretic I would give a Hitchslap award to that rap singer Gnarls Barklay, that sang John Lennon's Imagine and changed the words from: "Imagine no religion" to "and all religion's true". I think he sang that on a big broadcast New Year show. Puke! Naturally, few people complained to the network. It's ok to praise religion, but if you do the opposite, you get shut down really fast.
In Hitch’s blazing galaxy, there’re actually entertainers whom were very much fond of Christopher like Sean Penn, Olivia Wilde, Roger Ebert, Shekhar Kapur, Mia Farrow, Whoopi Goldberg & more. Edit: Oh dear, Ricky’s the man yet I forgot about comedians, like: by sheer coincidence, Patton Oswalt, then Neal Brennan, and Sarah Silverman, Bill Maher, and even Rosanne Barr, and even somehow Joe Rogan wut. Maybe I should even name those that got Hitchslapped like Charlton Heston, Mos Def, Jane Fonda, Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, Mel Gibson, what joy.
Ricky crushed it. I couldn't care less about the audience's egos being knocked down a peg or whatever, but the juxaposition of their ego with Gervais' comments is funny.
I fucking loved him for that! Everyone was so butthurt afterwards though :P It's funny because if he said those things at an English award show not many people would be offended, i guess our humor's different. Also around 45% of us are Athiest's xD
It had "odd" moments and awkward silences from the crowd, which shows they take themselves wayyy to seriously. The only one pissing himself was Robert DeNiro.. on ya Robert 👍
Ricky did an awesome job of making everyone on that audience think in their heads "please dont be a joke on me next"
hilarious stuff, people need to lighten up.
@633 SquadronHopefully they're ( it might be a woman) is less of a humourless weirdo now.
English isn't your first language.
@JazGalaxy
7 years ago......wow, have you got a life since then?
It is so satisfying to see how much Ricky Gervais makes celebrities squirm.
Ferdinand Cesarano Most of them look terrified or furious in equal measures.😂
It’s absolutely gold, love it.
And he's still doing it, as vicious as ever in 2020. I love it. The Hollywood elite need to be exposed for the giant hypocrites they are.
@sopcannon - Well, he certainly made audiences squirm. But celebrities?
Anyway, he was quick and sometimes amusing; but his humour was not the least bit clever. He doesn't compare remotely to the brilliant Ricky Gervais.
watch An Audience with Freddie Starr to see celebrities squirm.
Takes a lot of balls to host that show and to take the piss out of people to their face! He's bloody awesome. Best host ever!
Ricky told the tame jokes to their faces... he saved the brutal jokes for stars who weren't at the ceremony.
He is hilarious - I love how he just tells it like it is and the Hollywood types can't take it.
@I’m a fan Paul is not American. He's either British or Australian ...
Paul you’re American Paul speak like one
The fact that this made Johnny and Ricky friends says everything about Johnny's character. The most down to earth person who never takes himself seriously. A real gem!
@Private Name Get your carer or guardian to read it to you very slowly.
@B B wtf are you talking about?
" i wan't to thank God for making me an atheist" Ricky is just hilarious
'Want'...
@Tirad Enazi he doesnt regret anything. Here in UK that means nothing
@Tirad Enazi Yes, nothing. I hope people will remember me from time to time
who came from 2020 and binging? LEGEND
2023
2023
Watching loop from 2022
2023....
Most of these people are very privileged and, quite frankly, a little narcissistic. Glad to see Gervais isn't afraid to knock them down a peg.
I like Ricky because he’s funny not because he’s taking anyone down a peg. I don’t know these people. I don’t know Ricky. I don’t know who is or isn’t narcissistic. I don’t have a dog in this fight. I just want to laugh.
And also, hypocritical. I've seen Twitter.
I mean, Gervais is privileged and narcissistic. He only rags on celebrities because people stroke his ego for it.
You have no clue. Cliche thought
@Danny Dorko every person who owns an Instagram or Twitter account is to a degree narcissistic. It’s a master of how to be aware of it and curb that urge.
"The other.... is Tim Allen."
Eight years later and still funny as hell.
@Bella S. there was a joke from Tom Hanks? I am not sure about that... It did not look like Tom Hanks found any of Ricky Gervais jokes funny at all at any Golden Globes.
@Tom Doyle I know this is an old comment but I don't recall Tim Allen ever being "down" after Home Improvement. He's worked steady for decades. It's just that he's not Tom Hanks. Nobody is.
I would run to TV when Tim Allen did stand-up routines - forty years ago. Tim was always great on Carson and Letterman.
I saw an interview where Ricky actually said he felt bad about that joke.
@Kula Productions Lmaooo i had been scrolling down looking for this very comment i felt like someone else kinda felt that too xD
You know you’re talented when you can make multiple actors stutter and make them so pissed that they’re unable to act happy.
no. i posit that the delivery is not as important as the content and context. furthermore, i didnt see any of the butts of his jokes not laugh. wrong in every instance as i see it.
@lzszl Yes, which proves Wayne's initial point.
public embarrassment. yes he's talented, but their folding is down to where and when he said what he said, not that he said it or the way he said it.
Let’s take a moment of appreciation for how he delivered all of that.
Ricky was on his game and was hilarious. The thing that made it so real and funny he was just basically telling the truth.
Boy, Gervais made it extremely difficult for some of those people to make a confident entrance. Hahahaha!
They should have just took a joke instead of looking across toward him awkwardly not knowing what to say
The Dude Thanks.
+The Dude Yes. He did.
I feel Gervais is doing more of a roast than a host.
And we're here for it
Somebody had to pick up where Don Rickles left off.
Eaque Johnson Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did the same for the Golden globes back in 2015.
Ricky is a legend. Love this. Roberts jokes on the other hand haven't aged quite so well
Lol I couldn’t even tell what the hell RDJ was talking about tbh, I was just creeped out
The Tom Hanks Tim Allen joke is priceless.
Yeah, at first I was feeling bad for RDJ for Ricky's jokes about drug addiction and jail time. But then RDJ did his thing and, yeah, I don't feel so bad.
Yeah seemed very odd
He’s holding a mirror up to these people and they are laughing at their own hypocrisy priceless.
Ricky is the reason so many people watch this. It’s just not fun without him
Here in 2023 and you were absolutely correct !
he is the only reason i watch this.
There are not a lot of jokes in his jokes. He just states facts.
The best comedians do that.
Natalia Li it’s the way you tell’em
Love how they all take themselves so seriously, and Rickey just annihilates them. You can see them sitting there, squirming in their seats. Go Ricky!
I’ve watched this so many times and I still enjoy it every time.
I'll never get tired of robert de niro's laugh.

@Monkey Orchid or when Hillary clinton actively spoke out against same sex marriage's
thats another good example
A little bit a little bit
@Marty Procter isnt it funny how at one time Trump was a democrat...which really shows exactly what a treacherous twunt he is!
He said it perfectly "Just because you're offended doesn't mean you're right"
Binging his hosting nights after seeing him rip everyone this year. Dude is the man! And, also, I like that he has been with the same woman for about 30 years
bUt He'S a GeMiNi?!
CJ H 👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥
Tee Pee 😂
I know she must be mad or something !
dudes got integrity
This guy is the only reason I watched this show. Wish they’d pay him boat loads to do it every year
Ricky Gervais said before, "they're the richest, most privileged people in the world. If you can't make fun of them, then who can you fun of?"
RobMacRay if you let it! Imagine those same actors if no one ever turned out to the box office! Besides Netflix and Friends Are Taking Over
And too much is given much is required! And I don't mean making movies.
They are very well-off. Often they don't even have to pay for anything because the publicity is worth so much more than the item(s) themselves. That to me is rich.
Gra Ra5
replying to a 4 year old comment...
Ricky's comedy level was here incomparable to others attempts to joke
I can watch Ricky all day. Genius comedian!
Bring him back!!
this guy is fantastic...big mistake dismissing him for this gig. he's the only reason I watched.
Haha. Loved every second of it! Steve Carell was hilarious here as well, natural comedian he is. Nice to see at least someone able to laugh at oneself like that.
Ricky Gervais is a true nice guy I like he's honesty and humour he's a hero of comedy
Gervais is ruthless, I love it!
Nostalgia Crown Warship it
Just look at all of them squirm and stumble after Ricky introduces them. It's absolutely brilliant
They realize that Ricky spices things up as no one else can, and gets people laughing, gets people watching. So, even with him being a little too honest, it's worth it in the end.
I love the way he reacts to some of his jokes like he has to justify them or explain himself. incredible like "I know, I know you hated that"
Ricky was hilarious. Some uptight people getting offended by a comedian's joke? Geez.
What Downey said was not funny. Nobody was laughing and frankly it was kinda off putting
Max Miller so fucking what?
afro symphony lol...spoilt? Impecile?...I think you should add "illiterate" to the list of things you "claim"
Gerry Delafino u know what,am not gonna fight this...amen! halleluyah i claim it! am rich! and spoilt! who doesnt wanna be rich
Ricky was and IS brilliant. Best host ever.
Never gets old. Aimed at a deserving group.
Rich, famous people are treated like their gods so it’s SO refreshing to see them bumped down a peg. Love Ricky and love the British sense of humor, us Americans could learn a thing or two
Robert Downey Jr is pretty rich calling Ricky sinister when he comes out with something way more creepy
That was hard to watch. Wow. And I love RDJ.
Omg. Its psrt of the joke. Do you know the meaning of ironic?
@scribe570 let's hope english is not his mothertongue...
Ricky is a living legend
Ricky Gervais is a comedic legend. I would like to see him on Comedy Central Roasts.
It’s crazy Downey made these jokes and Disney still kept him
He is so fresh and just delightful. I love comedians who are not afraid to make actual jokes.
Glad he didn't make any GI Jane jokes though......
This guy is unbelievably funny. Amazing
Steve has just perfect comedy timing and reaction.
Can't wait to see Ricky this year. Gonna be epic.
@Curt Stolpe Anti-American?
It was.
oh it was
The prophecy was fulfilled
that tim allen joke just never gets old
It was the best in my view
He is so good. I love how he just makes fun of everyone and everything. Its so nice to see these pathetic celebs get roasted like they do.
Anyone who makes De Niro laugh is a legend in my book.
Ricky gervais only offends if you have no sense of realistic humour
Go Ricky, come back for more please
This guy needs to host every award show!!
I nearly died laughing when the President of the foreign press came out after that introduction!
He didn,t take it very well, poor old chap.
GOOD FOR HIM!!!! I salute you Rick Gervais!!!
This has aged like a fine wine. Top man Ricky.
The Tim Allen joke is still his best moment on the Golden Globes.
I wish he could host every award show!
Anyone taking offense at the comments made her is devoid of both a sense of humor and a grasp of reality. Well done Mr Gervais!
The Tim Allen bit was brutal. Loved every moment of it.
Robert Downey Jr. just sounded like someone seeing all the attention Ricky was getting and wanted some too. Ricky's funny when he does it. Robert is just cringey.
Beg to differ
@EightyFourguess you don't realize this is all rehearsed??
Pretty hard to compete with one of Britain's best comedians though it you're trying to be funny.
Come on.. don't be so hard on Downey. Gervais is one of the greatest comedians ever. Would like to see ya'll try to shine beside of him 😂
@Max Medlow same
The gagging at the Hugh Hefner joke killed me 😭
Bright, great, fortunately there is a comedian with a real and sincere sense of humor .Bravo!!!
Love it! All the Hollywood types in the audience were afraid to laugh at the jokes.

If only more celebs were like him
" Mel Gibson told me that....hes obsessed" I died 😂😂😂😂😂
If there was evidence needed of celebrities taking themselves WAY too seriously, this is it.
"The Ungrateful Steve Carell" was my favorite part.
I love Deniro laughing at the Hefner joke while pretending it doesn’t pertain to himself.
The best host these bullshit awards shows have ever had. They knew what they were getting when they asked him to host and he no doubt delivered on their expectations.
Not to mention, they asked him back the year after :)
Gervais was how award shows could've stayed popular. But Hollywood had too much pride for that.
You got to give it to him , Ricky is freaking hysterical !!
The Hugh Hefner bit about his age was friggin hilarious
That joke for Tim Allen and Tom hanks was one of the best ive seen
"when people say they are offended I'm still waiting for them to make a point" - Christopher Hitchens
+1 for Hitchens reference
@Polymathic Heretic I would give a Hitchslap award to that rap singer Gnarls Barklay, that sang John Lennon's Imagine and changed the words from: "Imagine no religion" to "and all religion's true". I think he sang that on a big broadcast New Year show. Puke! Naturally, few people complained to the network. It's ok to praise religion, but if you do the opposite, you get shut down really fast.
Christopher Hitchens. One of the Greatest men in history.
BriansWrld great guy, Christopher Hitchens .

How in the world hasn't Ricky Gervias been invited to a Comedy Central roast yet?
Too costly?
Because he belongs in the major league and not in triple A
He would certainly turn it down
Because he's a good comedian. Those roasts are low brow stuff and very "American" and just wouldn't appeal to him.
@Mindedchaos Norm McDonald is not political and a Canadian soo your theory is not correct :P
He should present every award show
The way Steve carel pushes him away 😂
Ricky should do one of these again...I think he should host the Oscars..
That Hugh Hefner joke just killed me 😂😂
Ricky crushed it. I couldn't care less about the audience's egos being knocked down a peg or whatever, but the juxaposition of their ego with Gervais' comments is funny.
That man is hilarious... give him an oscar xD... I laugh so hard every time I watch this...
This is Brilliant and what balls you have to have too do this. Love Ricky so funny
If only all award shows lasted that long.
Deniro's expression at 4:24 is priceless.
I’m not a big fan of Ricky but he’s epic at hosting this event
British humour by Gervais - versus - American haha by R.Downey jr.
100 - 0
@Voot Eimer Frankie Boyle, Stewart Lee, Kevin Bridges etc.
@Mark L sixtyseven He’s creepy AF!
Junior is sooooo creepy! All those women squirming in their seats!
@Voot Eimer 🙄
@Paeden yeah, holy shirt ... WTF was that about 😳
"And I want to thank god, for making me an atheist" This guy is a fucking genius.
I fucking loved him for that! Everyone was so butthurt afterwards though :P It's funny because if he said those things at an English award show not many people would be offended, i guess our humor's different. Also around 45% of us are Athiest's xD
Well done Ricky, what a bunch of overpaid jesters! Love to see them brought down a peg or two.
This man is amazing, the scientology bit killed me
Oh god, im in stitches again watching this. Ricky is pure genius
"I'd like to thank god, for making me an atheist..."
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I can’t stop watching this over and over!
Seeing this (after four minutes) tears come streaming from my eyes. Focking brilliant.
It had "odd" moments and awkward silences from the crowd, which shows they take themselves wayyy to seriously. The only one pissing himself was Robert DeNiro.. on ya Robert 👍
"Just don't look at it when you touch it". Is that the best line ever?
Yes it is😂😂😂
He just roasts everyone. It’s hilarious. I love Ricky gervais
