@autoeprise Typically I would go with the body language read, as well, but he's now had a town hall; all kinds of meetings; had Roland roll in, etc., so he appears to be trying. And, he's also between a rock and a hard spot as he really didn't cause these problems but is tasked with fixing them up. So, I know 3 million is to be spent getting a new locker room for the football team, so I'm keeping a look out to see how well he keeps with that and other timelines.
I’m a board member of an HBCU and in a prior profession consulted “black lead” organizations. Leadership like this is more of an issue in our community than racism. They know how to talk and pontificate, but not how to lead and implement. Technical and tangible skills are lacking. Our issue as a community are generational and technical.
They fired ed reed...because he was too damn honest...and they want a coach who's more subdued and docile...and is more willing to keep their mouth shut and go along with the program
My sister was actually a student there and suffered due to the financial issues going on there. She said the school was very nasty and wide open. So everything Ed is saying is actually true.
The point the gentleman was trying to make was why talk about it in a negative light, do something about it Ed and everyone who has negative to say. We cut off our nose to spite our face🤦🏿♂️
@That Boy From The Boot exactly! Whatever message they just gave the team using former players in the NFL is inefficient those boys still have to go back to sharing helmets with mold and doesn’t have a locker room or showers, the list is long. When I got to Bethune for grad school I couldn’t believe it! I’m just surprise it just now coming out. It’s been bad years ago. Did anyone hear how they were going to fix any of the issues????? Because I haven’t… I’ll pray for them young men who say they will risk their lives for an unorganized university. God bless.
This was needed. Conversation makes people aware and hopefully makes a change if they're truly there for the black community. We have to hold our own people accountable when they're doing wrong and they have to as well.
I can speak from personal experience I went to Bethune on a partial scholarship back in 08-09 I ended up leaving due to the inconsistency that occurred with financial aid. Half of my Tuiton was payed for athletics and the other half was payed by scholarships academic wise. I would get called to the financial aid building at least 3 times week stating that I owed money when my education had been payed for in full. But I noticed if you looked outside everyone in that office drove a Benz or Beamer. I knew something wasn’t adding up!!! Our weight room was in a damn warehouse, our student activity center was a old car lot. If you play big ass schools and you’re a Division 1AA school you receive millions to get you ass beat by these bigger schools… where is the money going???????
As someone that always wanted to attend a HBCU, this is concerning. My parents guided me elsewhere back then and later shared HBCUs did not provide enough scholarships and institutional support for attendance. Now hearing these negative reports on HBCUs is an eye opener and knowing students’ needs are being neglected is horrific and malpractice. BCU should be the gem of the community - make the leadership honest.
This misinformation does not apply to all HBCU's. I am a 2007 graduate of Hampton University and we have a beautiful campus, great staff, and supporting community with many scholarships and mentorships that promote success of all students. You get out what you put into it.
HBCUs are definitely a challenge. I am a Howard Bison graduate, and while they can be so frustrating at times, I have to say they also prepare you for life. In retrospect, I am thankful for the experience.
Dude put that webcam in the tiniest room of his house so the public could not see the enormity of his home that he's probably paying for with those misallocated funds
Excellent discussion and the interim president made great sense and provided very direct information, not dodging anything. So much so, that I'm going to make a $500 contribution to the school now and if everyone who subscribes to Roland's channel did so, or gave whatever amount they were comfortable with, it would help make a very positive difference as opposed to everyone rudely saying this man is lying without putting up facts. Also, the man didn't back off at all and welcomed Roland coming.
I attended BCU in 91 for one academic year as a freshman who lived on campus. The dorms, classrooms, and facilities were run down then; this along with ongoing chaos/miscommunication with financial aid etc., all definitely contributed to my decision to transfer to another university. However, looking back, I do have fond memories as I met some great people. It's disheartening, that in 2023, the conditions at the university do not sound much improved. Deflecting to a recent hurricane, although perhaps a recent contributing factor, is definitely not at the core of the numerous ongoing issues across many facets, BCU continues to face.
@SagePerception With a spending power of nearly $2 trillion dollars, we are than in a position to give back. The problem is, our financial priorities are not in order. We can spend multi-billions on beauty, sneakers, cars, alcohol, fast food, but we can't pony up the funds to take care of our own institutions. I hope we can get it together.
@SagePerception unfortunately not every HBCUs alumni funding is allocated in the right direction like Spellman and Morehouse. There needs to be audits done at a lot of these HBCUs by a disinterested third party to get to the bottom of some of these financial issues.
My aunt went there in 91 and she said she loved the people but it was ratchet. I remember she took me and my cousins there for homecoming and the school was ratchet ad hell
@W.A. FRANKLIN I was literally attacked for saying HBCUs need to market better. I said being from the North HBCU culture is not prominent here and it is largely a regional thing in the south. Idk how you read that as I am looking down on southern blacks at all. They keep saying black people in general should know all these HBCUs exist and I am simply saying that isnt true at all.
@Iceman Aj Henley And for the record bro those schools yall mentioned are like 5 hours away. There are schools in Illinois i still have never heard of. Only schools in Ohio i know of are the major ones....
In support of Ed Reed, I want to thank him for his energy, enthusiasm and determination to aid the students of BC,his positive approach to a very challenging environment and institution in total disarray is another example of the antiquated, dysfunctional principles currently functioning within higher education, Ed please tap into your inner reserve of patience and great understanding of the huge issues, you're a WINNER, proven, and when you extend your greatness, it's not always appreciated and accepted
Ed Reed does not get it. He still thinks He's entitled. Just another former Athlete who thinks he Deserves to have whatever he wants. Some of those Videos show he has no class. At all.
No it’s call economics try raising money if not your comments does nothing. Solutions are needed not your sweet sentiments. Are you volunteering your services no so what is the point. My people wake-up everybody ❤
God Bless the STUDENTS.. That"s the REAL issue. There are kids still there trying to learn under those conditions..Someone does have to be held accountable..
It is very troubling, sad and a scar to our black community the mismanagement HBCU's are operating under. Prime alluded to it, and Ed Reed went ahead and put it all out there.
@Jyan Harris because youre brain is still developing at 18. But being 18 and not being able to handle bad language is a problem. The fact you compared the two is off
@MsQuisha_21... I love my Wildcat culture and family, but the manner in which business is/was handled has ALWAYS been messy & corrupt. I was there from 91-96.
@Khalil Randall Im not a big fan of Dr. Umar hes a very intelligent brother but very opinionated Roland may not be a big fan of Umar either but to each his own
Shout out to Roland, and coach reed!!Reed!!! To the school board stop stealing money and fix the damn school, I believe the coach cares about the school
When RM started asking the money situation, his facial expressions shifted and he started dancing around the questions lol.he know them folks stealing money.thats why alumni stopped donating or give a smaller amount.
HE IS STATING THE FACTS…. If it happens to pffemd people so be it. I personally dont fault any sides ED REED had the best intentions and so does the school after all a stature of ED REED to be a coach for a school that could barely afford a football program is excited. But the school found incongruency way before they fully commit and for EDs sake he does need to reign in his emotions afterall he has another shot to be a headcoach.
I am a alumni of Bethune Cookman University. When I was receiving my bachelor's degree I had issues with the financial aid office. They told me I had aid. But when everything was said and done to get my degree I had to pay out of pocket 6,000 dollars. I received my masters degree from Bethune but this time had no financial issues. Cookman has to do better than what they are doing.
I attended an HBCU in Augusta, GA that school was some straight foolishness. The amount of time it took me to get anything done as far as class schedules, financial aid, concerns about my transferring credits and other issues was straight foolishness. I can only speak on my personal experience, it was a mess and I remember making appointments because the staff stayed canceling or I’d go to meet and the office would be closed. Staff members talking crazy to me when I questioned my finances or being told as an non traditional student that I had to attend all classes on main campus even though did my first semester at the remote learning center & I worked clear across town on Ft. Gordon (the remote location) When I questioned why my classes were canceled for the remote site I was told I didn’t have permission because I didn’t have proper access to the military base, which by the way is an open base, but I currently worked on the base and told them I worked there. Asked them what other permissions I needed to attend the remote learning center….. crickets no answer. I got so tired of the nonsense, foolishness and pure shenanigans that I called my lender and pulled my loans and started the withdrawal process they had the nerve to ask me to go to a retention specialist who did nothing to solve the problem but tell me why I should take all of my classes on main campus. I worked a full time job and had a household that needed my attention. Trying to get an education should not have been that difficult to attain. I had to tell that retention specialist to stop the madness and I withdrew from that school. I ended up with my Bachelors by doing my last semester and 1/2 at my former University through distance learning. Mind you all this was immediately after Hurricane Katrina and the way I was treated was some straight Bullsh*t!!! I now have 3 degrees, (BS, M.Ed & MHHS) none of them from an HBCU…..at some point they have to get their stuff together and be honest about their shortcomings and stop being mad when people shed light on the issues that seem to plague many of these Historically Black Colleges & Universities. It’s a shame because they have a lot to offer our people and communities but this type of foolishness just takes away from all of the wonderful things that these institutions stand for!!!!
@EDF Thanos My first job was working at summer camp in low income communities where we had limited resources to make experiences for the children that attended our camp. One summer I voluntarily took a pay cut to keep the staff on board who were all employed way before me. There's absolutely no excuse for incompetence & negligence. We never ever had those kids in unsafe or unsanitary conditions no matter the budget! The people at BCU do not care & only look out for self! It's that's simple. The Interim President is blaming everything on two hurricanes when they could have still removed the students from the dorm until they rectified the situation. Prioritize students by only allowing those that MUST live in campus if they didn't have the necessary space or idk think outside the box. I'd rather sleep in a safe secure location on a cot than sleep in a room that's infested with mold & pests. It's inexcusable the way the administration has handled this & they all deserved to be fired and investigated.
Number 1 priority should be welfare, security, support of the student body in any academic institution, our HBCUs moreover is being focused on and publicize recently which has been neglected, Thank you Brother Martin for bringing it to the forefront, I agree you should visit and conduct the townhall meeting where all voices are heard
I'm a parent who actually just started the recruiting process and hearing about this school immediately now makes me turn away I'm sorry but I wish you the best.
I am good!!! Listen my individual your school has Been in despair for Too long !! It's all at the top ( Administration) !! Now it's True Mr Reeds timing could've been planned out differently !!!!! Now imagine walking into a SETTING &&& SEEING A PLACE LOOKING SOMEWHAT IN SHAMBLES!!! I'm gonna blame that HBUC CAMPUS EVERYTIME !!! OK STAY WOKE. !!!
@W C You probably never heard Ed Reed speak a word before this month but he exempt from responsibility right? Any of us do the same on our job we get fired. Period. But hey if you are some hurricane recovery contractor guru by all means go to BC and show us how it's done 🤣
Wow! My daughter stated she considered going to this college but because of the issues she decided against it and that's was over 20+ years ago. So these concerns has been on going and where are the funds going.
We have to give this man MUCH respect. For one he was willing to be the face of this decision and not throwing the rock and hide the hand; though he likely delivered the decision Im sure knowing how these institutions operate he did NOT make this decision in a vacuum. Facts are we can’t take snippets from social media and make snap judgements. We do need to look at the full context. HBCU issues are systemic and have been for long time far longer than we Ed Reed showed up to BCU campus. Our HBCUs are NOT properly funded!!!! Period. Point blank. Ed Reed caused those vested in the HBCU community to be having this conversation as he should but let’s face it Ed Reed did not handle this well. Though I support him and his urging to have a uncomfortable “right now” conversation, his response was not the most appropriate and as an HR professional myself fully support an organization’s decision to say we are no longer a great fit, our values no longer align…particularly after extending some degree of grace and engaging in a dialogue about concerns with his approach. If it were any other institution, the decision would be unfavored yet respected and accepted without the superfluous drama. I can find reason in BCUs decision; the issue is Ed Reeds repeated behavior was an indication of his resistance and dissidence to the schools stipulation how he may discuss his concerns. Furthermore, we overlook the fact Eds behavior did and would have an impact on recruitment and student enrollment. Students reconsidering attending the university significantly impacts student enrollment; whereby one funding and revenue source. Again impacting the university’s ability to do the necessary work to fund its infrastructure; justifiable reason to end contract negotiations. Now whether Mr. Reed tried o have a reasonable conversation about the issues and the it fell on deaf ears before he took to social media…that has yet to be said. Let’s refocus on the real problem, the larger issues; the amount of funding and work or lack thereof necessary to sustain and support our historically Black higher Ed institutions 💫
When you are the face on the poster; you're just doing your job or doing what you're told to do. When you go to an area that was impacted by a storm a year ago and you do see equipment and workers making repairs--THINGS are being SWEEP under the rug! I heard a lot of BIG financial numbers being tossed around--Where are the funds??? Why were those spaces and places still in disarray? When a "institution" has changed that many Presidents in such a short time, something is being hidden...and a "snatch" will never be "A PERFECT FIT FOR OUR INSTITUTION". And if those in that school system doesn't keep pressure on them--this will fade real quickly. If it wasn't for Mr. Reed--this conversation, and the condition of Bethune-Cookman wouldn't be a topic! And the fact that you have to disband an alumni counsel and form another to "align" with your vision and methods, there is something going on for sure. . .
I am reading these comments about Bethune Cookman and other HBCU’s and, frankly, it breaks my heart. I am a graduate of N.C.A.&T State University in Greensboro, N.C. I will be 70 years old this year, and the four years I spent on that campus were the best, and most formative years of my life. However, I am ashamed to say that I have not been an active supporter of my Alma Mater but the swelling criticism of HBCU’s have awakened me to the need for support that exist at these schools. Not only am I pledged to support my school, I am pledged to be a strong advocate for the support of all HBCU’s! Thank you Roland, for keeping the light on this crisis. I hope that our people will be more positively and proactively involved in correcting the problems, instead of critical and belittling and ready to walk away from our schools.
My dad told me 52 years ago “never trust a man who can’t look you in the eyes when he talks with you ,I just don’t trust this guy,I could be wrong that’s just my opinion.
In the larger scheme of things every time Black people build there's a resistance. In the day of social media we need to point this out every chance we get as we move on in the struggle. This brother coach (Ed Reed) was right and exact, let's fight for him and keep him safe, he's one of our passionate Saints.
This school was heavily recruiting my son. He’s not an athlete so they were pursuing him academically. He’s a young senior and I could never trust a school like this with his life. It’s been crossed off his list!
@MSN Again, not a news flash. I wasn't trying to get into everything that transpired, but here is my final comment on the matter. My daughter was also a band member in high school. Had she decided to join the band at BCU there was a scholarship available to her. The other parent's comment peaked my curiosity when she said BCU pursued her son academically. I just wondered what the specifics were. It's crazy to me that football and band can get a full ride, but there's nothing offered to our high achieving students. That defeats the whole purpose of an institution of higher learning to me. Priorities are not in order.
@RP9789 …and my point is that not all schools have endless supplies of scholarships. (Especially smaller private schools) Just because your student has a stellar GPA doesn’t mean that others don’t, or automatically guarantee a scholarship. Once scholarship money runs out, it’s gone. 3.9 gpa means nothing if money has already been distributed to other worthy candidates. Many factors are involved. Maybe your 3.9 missed a deadline, applied later than others ,had poorer test scores, didn’t write the best essay, have the best resume, didn’t have the best interview , was an out of state student, or perhaps in state ,?etc. on and on. Who knows but a good gpa is only part of the equation. Scholarships have a funding source. Private schools rely on themselves to generate revenue. Less funding equals fewer scholarship opportunities.
I live in Florida, and the impact of two hurricanes can be devastating to any organization. HBCUs on a daily basis are already hurting for money, so I completely understand why the conditions at Bethume Cookman are not up to building code standards. However, you can not allow students to live and attend classes under those conditions where mold is present. I graduated from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, and the school has a strong donation base along with an alumni who financially supports the university. The reason why I am sharing that information with you is to show a comparison and contrast of the two universities located in the same city and how each handed the same problem. My point is that donors and alumni at BCU need to immediately step up and provide funding for renovation of school buildings, starting with the dorms and classrooms. Some of the schools' major sponsors like Disney should be able to provide portable buildings for classrooms and temporary housing for students and faculty members who lost their homes during the hurricanes. If I were the BCU President, I would be meeting with every major financial institution, including churches looking for any donations to get the school's building code back in compliance. The school is already against a timeline because in Florida, every year, hurricane season starts June 1 and does not end until November 31. Lastly, if I was President of BCU, I would meet with the Daytona Beach Mayor and City Council to see if they would provide some donated funding or support services as well.
Great again Roland! You really provided an intelligent man of HBCU a platform and he delivered! I am a Jackson State Alumni 4 years did not complete my degree there unfortunately due to life choices! But we missed If we could had kept Deion by our community not offering donations in lieu of contractual earnings! We missed with how Ed spoke on an community institution! Can we win with those with health and monies to go physically into our 208 historically black colleges and help clean our porch! Instead of calling these institutions and staff out actually HELP OUT and contribute more than a judgment! Keep being great Roland I admire and respect you brother! We can blame whomever for not doing or not, but these black children are not just the alumni responsibility! It is our culture responsibility to make sure these institutions are ran properly and provide a healthy enriching environment. Who is going to preserve our past and allow our children to enhance futures to come but ourselves?
The truth hurts and they can't stand it. They thought Ed Reed was gonna do the same thing as Deon Sanders did for JSU. They didn't see wins for the football team, they saw MONEY for the school. They could care less about the football program. When Ed exposed what he saw on campus they got in their feelings.
ED did not have exposed anything that the public did not know. This is not a blame game. The facts of the matter do hurt and in this case it eneded before it begun. We wish both sides well in resoect to Ed he will have plenty of opportunities ahead of him and for the school where a lot of young black students have their hopes pinned we also wish them well.
If the conditions of the buildings was so horrible letters should have gone out saying we will be virtual this year to fix the major issues affecting our school as a precautionary measure to prevent health problems to our students and staff
I went to Florida A&M University and am a proud graduate of this institution. Sure we had issues, but I did not have “show stopping” issues that impeded my quality of life. Here’s a solution: alumni should be giving back. Let’s not rely on others to do for self.
@Sjont Thats not how it works. Schools don't provide aid. That's the federal government. This BCU thing has shown that most people commenting have never stepped foot onto ANY college campus.
If you have a an opportunity to correct some issue and bring money and a prestige to your college. Why hide your issues instead bringing in the resources. I feel like Ed was bringing the fix the University so badly needed. Get out the way! Good job Ed and I pray that you get this sorted out.
@Florida Gemini how do u make eye contact on skye zoom you're looking at screen, why aren't u concerned about his words, everything he said is easily verifiable, y aren't u concerned about him hiring a clearly unqualified. coach, he's coached 1 yr in 2016 as a CB coach, zero head coaching experience, y is he protecting the trustees, this is what u should be concerned with, y did he lie and say he meets regularly with student government when his last meeting was in Aug 22, these are the questions u should be asking, instead of being concerned about his bama presentation
Maaaaan I appreciate you uncle Roland 💪🏿💯 You give it to them blood raw & keep their feet in the fire 🔥 I've never seen you cut corners with anyone 💪🏿 💯x10
I remember when my sister went to Tuskegee and Central State University and I swear it looked like the projects in the middle of the woods at both campuses. The tuition was crazy at both Universities. That was in the nineties and I see nothing has changed. I chose a regular university when it was my turn I was not going to those dirty little schools. As for this particular issue this guy is dancing around everything. They did Ed a huge favor!!!!
@LadyCeCeFromThaDirty I went off my own experience yours may be different. Generalizing every black person into one category is not the solution. I never said Tuskegee or Central State University were horrible institutions academically however their campuses were not to "my" liking or standards for their tuition rates. I named 2 specific institutions I visited I would never say all Black University's are not to my liking. Lets stop trying to umbrella and generalize all issues that we have within and outside our community.
@Jimmy Weathersby white yellow or black thats the very money that actually makes improvement to the school. Not anyones pleas not the speech NOT s person not someone’s ambitions or motivation… ITS THE MONEY that moves the needle. We csn all laugh and make fun of this type of situations but read your comments snd think through it as people do suffer from illogical misteps. AND BTW MONEY only comes in one COLOR GREEN. Go ask ALL THE RAPPERS that throw them around in their videos.
I come from a long line of HUBC graduates from PV, Bishop College and Paul Quinn College. I am proud of the level of education I received. And unfortunately it has always been employees stealing money and not putting it where it belongs. This is why Bishop College closed.
Blessings to you for fighting for our schools Roland 🙏🏽 the storms here was awful 😖 but this government NOT Helping our community only the rich white community with billions 🤨
The biggest challenge with having former NFL players as coaches, like Deion Sanders and Ed Reed, who are millionaires, is their exposure to high quality facilities. They will demand the best because they've played, worked, and lived in the best places. You can't BS these guys! You have to produce the conditions or else. These guys, like the interim president of Bethune Cookman don't seem motivated to produce top quality facilities. The interim president said a lot of words that meant nothing will change.
Excellent reporting and very intriguing and informative interview. Keep up the great work. Yes, I am a paying consumer of the videos. If you're reading this comment, you need to consider as well because I don't got it like that and I'm managing. Toss out the excuses and get out your wallets. Let's take this show to the next level.
They didn't went him to expose that they are stealing that was one of the reasons Prime left JSU!! That's why Ed kept saying Prime was right about everything???🤔🤔👀
I went to a HBCU Southern University in Baton Rouge. When I first went to the campus it’s was trash everywhere, my dorm was built in the 70s and had mold and mildew all over the walls that made me sick and miss the first month of school and it’s was never cleaned or even acknowledged. Here in Huntsville Alabama at Alabama A&M a HBCU the students are complaining about having no running water or hot water and mold and mildew as well and the same is being said about the board of trustees skimming money and not allocating funds properly. This is not just a Bethune Cookman problem it’s a HBCU problem. Shout out to Ed Reed for exposing these issues.
I graduated from AAMU in ‘98 and it was a dump when I went and I couldn’t wait to move off campus. The problem was the staff because they knew they’d never be fired, do they could be lazy. It’s one of the reason why I have no desire to give money to the university because I know they don’t do anything right.
I graduated from Southern University in 1987. I have two brothers and our parents are alumnus as well, and one brother and sister graduated from Dillard University. I've been on and around SU literally all my life and have never once seen or ever heard of mold or anything like that. I've recruited many students for SU, and they would also testify to what I'm stating. I'm retired now and I still travel to the campus and it's still beautiful. In fact the very last time I visited campus on a Sunday just a few weeks ago, there was a man driving around picking up any paper or trash that might have missed the trash can. I commented to him that it's nice to see someone doing what I always have done and I'm not the only one. As for BC, I think you are in good hands with Dr. Drake. I do know Ed Reed personally and have since he was in middle school and I'm was super happy for him and BC when I heard of him becoming coach, but clearly he's not ready for this just yet.
Our kids deserve so much better! I believe we as a community need to hold these struggling HBCU leaders’ a$$es to the fire! These babies deserve better.
If you watch the whole video yesterday. He had this fool on first, then Ed Reed, then three football players, and then representative from the alum board.
Also when the question of players sharing helmets was asked you said no, however earlier I saw a upload here on KZclip of a young man who said he was a equipment manager for the team and although he said that he didn’t see players sharing the same helmet during his tenure but he did say that he did see it happen when BCC played Miami either last season or this past season.
The whole comments section full of past students saying that everything Ed said about the school has been going on for yrs. The secret is apparently out
It seems to me that there are a lot of people in leadership positions that have the mindset of. "This is the way it's always been" . At some point, the leaders of these schools have to start doing what's best for the students and the school versus their own personal gain.
He's right ALL PARTS of the campus don't look that way 🤣🤣🤣 they only dress up the admissions building. As someone who took a tour of that campus back in 2005/2006 he is FULL OF 💩. That campus has been looking like that since I took that tour, I knew exactly where he was. 🤣🤣🤣 That was the whole reason that I didn't go just raggedy and expensive. Them dorms are nasty AF, they got roaches, they're MOLDY and there is NO excuse.
It takes people such as this Coach to refuse to accept the University in the condition in which it is in and to push towards what's best for the University
Great interview. I think Dr. Drake answered the questions well and grace should be extended due to recent hurricanes but the fact remains that some HBCUs are notorious for sub par conditions. I know for certain this has been the case from 1985-89 when I attended a university near a few HBCUs. I would be appalled at what I saw when I would visit. Kudos to Roland for a great interview. I will be supporting financially this week. 🙏🏾
@45hoyneJr Not on the tuition but often times yes on the means to pay it. Ever heard of a grant? Available to many students. Grace is favor and often times it brings great change when we can celebrate the good while working to change the bad.
@keith dodd I am not a family member and I am not a sucker. Ed Reed's behavior got him fired. And now that the world knows, let's see what the world does about it!
That's why I didn't go to a HBCU school. And my kids didn't not go to one. I played football for university Michigan and I'm glad I did. It was a great experience. That's why all the good football players are going to big name schools. I'm glad Ed Reed made that video. Thanks to this BS situation HBCU school's will never see a big name coach again. At this rate they will never have football team. All the players are going to big schools. Better conditions and education
Don't let him get away with it Roland! There have been reports of about the facilities and the dorms! Some say that they haven't been updated since there parents went to the school! They fired a man for telling the truth!
@Craig Powell I wouldn't waste my time explaining anything to him. You can see black mold which is dangerous. People are spread all over the campus picking up thrash a big hole in the fence big enough to drive a golf cart through it a mat filthy just lying on the track. Then he sneak attack the kids by sayings they should protest what he deem appropriate. This one sad institution.
@God first miami famu edward waters florida state jacksonville state its like 10 other colleges that went through those same hurricane and everybody know u get insurance for hurricane damage especially in florida where is the money going in they pockets so they can buy Mercedes
Any you guys hear what he said they went through two hurricanes they're trying to get things straight I guess nobody watch the same video as I did it's his fault
@OG 2 2 Nine No! Ed Reed apologize so he could honor his commitment! And once he did that. Thinking by apologize will please them! They fired him! Disrespectful or not? Was it true? Don't give me excuses! Agree to disagree!
I visited Morgan state in the 80's. The dorms looked like projects that I knew from Newark, roach infested, no screens on the windows, no grass only dirt and asphalt. Needless to say I didn't want to go there😧
If those students/players get sick from MOLD! It will cost even more when the school gets sued. This man needs to open his eyes and do something before things get worst. BTW Mildew IS MOLD!!!
He’s out of line for saying that Dr. Bethune fired Zora Neale Hurston is not fully accurate. Dr. Bethune tasked Zora Neale Hurston with creating a theater at Bethune Cookman. She was given the old hospital building and was told to turn it into a dramatic arts theater. Zora Neale Hurston went on record saying she had difficulty even getting a light bulb. Many decades later, it seems like those issues still exist. 😓😓
The problem is folk have given HBCUs passes for decades. When my oldest son decided to go to Grambling in the 1990s I was disturbed they did not have an open computer room, it was always locked and seldom staffed. It was all about athletics. He was from Chicago and he was expected to play football. He was suspended for being in a girls dorm room on Halloween night, and was almost expelled. He and the girl, an honors student were turned out. Made no sense to me, but they are a "Christian Institution" and can't tolerant rule breaking and fornication. But the professors and the culture of sexual harassment. another story
These conditions go back over 20 years . The horrible building conditions to the malfunctions in the financial aide department Same issues different day
Yo, if he’s going to do a complete interview with his eyes close, I would respect him if he wore a pair of sunglasses😎 and sit at a piano 🎹 and keep it real like Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles!!!! 🤣
I have to raise the question, why did y’all dismiss some of the alumni? It’s like the school is dealing with a power struggle. And Roland is right in the sense, the committee or board should be present!
Anybody that talks with their eyes close can never see the truth in the lies they tell
@Albert Williams she didn't say they were unknown but that show did give them some publicity.
Wow he really does have his eyes closed the whole time
@autoeprise Typically I would go with the body language read, as well, but he's now had a town hall; all kinds of meetings; had Roland roll in, etc., so he appears to be trying. And, he's also between a rock and a hard spot as he really didn't cause these problems but is tasked with fixing them up. So, I know 3 million is to be spent getting a new locker room for the football team, so I'm keeping a look out to see how well he keeps with that and other timelines.
😂🤣😂
I thought it was just me thinking that.
@Keith Norton Code for multiple Baby Mommas and kids out of wedlock..... makes sense
@Handeezy Speakseasy I've got plenty Wives and children, not kids.
@Kelton Alexander yea cuz he is willing to tell the exact hbcu so he can get fired, you obviously don't have a wife and kids.
My sister was actually a student there and suffered due to the financial issues going on there. She said the school was very nasty and wide open. So everything Ed is saying is actually true.
I BELIEVE YOU. I left and went to a PWI. Fxck that struggle shit.
The point the gentleman was trying to make was why talk about it in a negative light, do something about it Ed and everyone who has negative to say. We cut off our nose to spite our face🤦🏿♂️
how did she SUFFER exactly ??
As a former BCU football player … it upsets me that Bethune hasn’t corrected their issues in over 10 years.
Facts. Just sad bro
God bless.
Exactly. Constantly blaming the 2 hurricanes when the majority of these issues existed years before these hurricanes
Thanks Mr. Martin for keeping us informed and bring things to the light.
This was needed. Conversation makes people aware and hopefully makes a change if they're truly there for the black community. We have to hold our own people accountable when they're doing wrong and they have to as well.
@Will Haynes Exactly.
Agreed 💯 let's hold every single person accountable.
Yes I agree
Then when you hold the HBCU leaders accountable.
@Muzette Meyun and it’s sad because you want to stick it out for the legacy/culture
@Rosalyn Wilson hello somebody!!!
Right the math isn’t mathing 😢
@Glen Adamafio
Which hbcu schools did you attend to?
But does this apply to ALL HBCUS?
HBCUs are definitely a challenge. I am a Howard Bison graduate, and while they can be so frustrating at times, I have to say they also prepare you for life. In retrospect, I am thankful for the experience.
Rolland called his bluff saying he would come down and do a town hall. 😂😂😂 bro backed off quick✊🏾 way to go bro that’s how you handle lies😂😂😂
Roland is stuck on being a racist
@Christopher Tyler don’t waste your money
@Laurence Paolino That didn't pan out either. Some woman tied to the school put a stop to that.
Thank you Roland, for always supporting us and also holding us accountable by being willing to ask the hard questions. Thank you again👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💪🏿
@SagePerception
With a spending power of nearly $2 trillion dollars, we are than in a position to give back.
The sad thing they got 70 million after the hurricane to fix damages and issues. It definitely didn't go to the school.
My aunt went there in 91 and she said she loved the people but it was ratchet. I remember she took me and my cousins there for homecoming and the school was ratchet ad hell
Honey I went there in 1987... SAME DIRTY ASS DORMS! No air conditioning in Curtis Hall, which was called the hot box back then!!
“We’re a Christian school”
Meanwhile 24k dancers are drum majors poppin and grinding in the background 😂😂😂
@King Solomon Yeah their affiliated with United Methodist. I attended for a year in 2000.
Yeah I was surprised to hear him say that, I had absolutely no idea that Bethune Cookman was supposed to be a Christian University.
@Michelle Smith 😂😂😂😂
Poppin for Jesus I suppose.
💯
I went to BCU back in 07 and to see it's still a dump is ridiculous! I'm glad Ed brought this to the light!
@B Money I swear bro! When I transferred to Troy, I didn’t know how to act..
@Travis Tooson exactly!! And I hate for it to be that way
@Forever Noble bro I swear!!
It’s Sad That The Student’s Of HBCU’s Have To Go Through Such Mess Like This!!
My girlfriend went 2 NCCU & would call me hiding n the parking lot bcuz a shootout was goin on & there was no security & the police didn't even come
In support of Ed Reed, I want to thank him for his energy, enthusiasm and determination to aid the students of BC,his positive approach to a very challenging environment and institution in total disarray is another example of the antiquated, dysfunctional principles currently functioning within higher education, Ed please tap into your inner reserve of patience and great understanding of the huge issues, you're a WINNER, proven, and when you extend your greatness, it's not always appreciated and accepted
He does care 1 bit for the students . He need to be fired
Selective outrage as usual.. what about all hbcu presidents who visited Trump begging for money
@John Connelly I said the same thing. Deion need to disconnect from Reed, he will make him look bad
🔦🔦🔦🔦
Thank you for sharing your facts there’s always 2 sides to a story. 🙏🏽♥️
These conditions were present before I was a student and currently over 12 years . These conditions are Health hazards!!!!!
@Jyan Harris because youre brain is still developing at 18. But being 18 and not being able to handle bad language is a problem. The fact you compared the two is off
@The Goat House WTF does over 18 mean they still can't drink in this country lol
@Jyan Harris lol college kids are over 18...wtf lol
I could only imagine
@MsQuisha_21... I love my Wildcat culture and family, but the manner in which business is/was handled has ALWAYS been messy & corrupt. I was there from 91-96.
No way that town hall happens, this dude was evasive AF! Always be wary of a person who speaks with their eyes closed!!!
I love Roland always keeping it real knows his stuff and does all he can to help the black community appreciate ya bro keep up the great work.
@Khalil Randall Im not a big fan of Dr. Umar hes a very intelligent brother but very opinionated Roland may not be a big fan of Umar either but to each his own
In my opinion I don't think he had a problem with him he was just challenging the facts
Then why he had a problem with Dr Umar Johnson when he was fighting for black
Shout out to Roland, and coach reed!!Reed!!! To the school board stop stealing money and fix the damn school, I believe the coach cares about the school
If he didn't, he wouldn't have said anything at all and treated it like a mosquito: You're right.
This man is the perfect example of listening to respond, he’s not trying at all to understand what RM is saying!
@Sway Yvens nah. He’s only responding to what he wants. He has not answered 50% of the questions. He responds with talking points.
He came to shift blame to Ed Reed.
This is exactly why my child went to a Corporate University.
@Mj.. I agree. Individuals are shedding light that events like this are not isolated.
Paine College ??
@TstormVA2012 no one can sit here with a straight face and say Ed was unprofessional when BCU was the absolute most unprofessional in all of this.
Thank you both for informative and engaging interviews. That said, how do you blame years of neglected capital improvements on recent hurricanes?
I'm glad he brought it to life, this shit has been going on for a long time
Been going on to damn long
Things will get done now & it's sad it has 2 come 2 this
The 22:20 mark has got to be the greatest rebuttal of a guest in Roland Martin Unfiltered’s HISTORY! Whew!🔥🔥
Corruption is corruption no matter what color I stand with Ed Reed
Please explain the claims of corruption and mismanagement of funds. There doesn't seem to be any proof of that
@Tim Bradford have they found that there was mismanagement of funds yet 🙄
Thank you Roland for doing this interview. 🙏
Wow! My daughter stated she considered going to this college but because of the issues she decided against it and that's was over 20+ years ago. So these concerns has been on going and where are the funds going.
#39 on trending, as of my time of watching. Your coverage is definitely the marquee coverage 💯
@Jonathan Tolbert I TOTALLY agree! I have Mold allergies--so, I know what it can do to a person!
I feel what you’re saying, but those kids shouldn’t be living like that. Period. Sometimes you gotta go off to get your point across.
BIG FACTS
Please Donate!!!
My dad told me 52 years ago “never trust a man who can’t look you in the eyes when he talks with you ,I just don’t trust this guy,I could be wrong that’s just my opinion.
R W correct!
@Arletta Bender cameras are not on the keyboard 😅😅😅😅
@Glen Adamafio lol exactly tf are we talking about
Maybe he had papers in front of him with information to stay focused.
Your not wrong.
Great interview. Roland asked the tough questions!! A town hall with the students will give a clearer picture!! 🧐
I can't believe they do they own people like this. Ed Reed is a positive role model. He will be a head coach bigger than BCU.
Very enlightening interview. I’ve seen both sides of the issue. This leadership has no vision and people don’t give to leaders with no vision.
You can tall by his body language that he's not tell the truth about everything.
@RP9789 one love my sister. I see your point.
@Guru Groove lol maybe he meant FRANCIS MARION UNIVERSITY
@Belle South are you saying that the shootings an burglarizing are better, more frequent or less? Also, some students just can’t afford cars .lol.
Two wrongs don't make no right Thanks for the coverage, Roland
Great interview, great insight to the inner workings of this particular HBCU.
@Santos Howard lol.... or your comment was full of nonsense and buffoonery it's one of the two for sure
I cant understand why there's still universities out there that don't realize FOOTBALL WINS EQUAL MONEY AND STUDENTS.
Simple as that.
Roland said it well
Vision, Leadership, Strategy, Execution
I went to Florida A&M University and am a proud graduate of this institution. Sure we had issues, but I did not have “show stopping” issues that impeded my quality of life. Here’s a solution: alumni should be giving back. Let’s not rely on others to do for self.
@Sjont Thats not how it works. Schools don't provide aid. That's the federal government. This BCU thing has shown that most people commenting have never stepped foot onto ANY college campus.
@Man that’s facts
@#MisterM Class of 1989!
@#MisterM Go Rattlers.
Go Rattlers! Class of 1995
If you have a an opportunity to correct some issue and bring money and a prestige to your college. Why hide your issues instead bringing in the resources. I feel like Ed was bringing the fix the University so badly needed. Get out the way! Good job Ed and I pray that you get this sorted out.
If this guy gives this interview to the police, they will think he’s guilty as hell.
I hope he doesn't drive with his eyes closed
@James Edwards 👍🏿
@James EdwardsWell I just saved $500 by switching to Geico. So I don't have time to entertain your trollenll!!!! You got it Jit!!!
@Tony P again was not impressed with that campus I’m glad you had great experience
@Eugene Ellis Jr. Meaning they get renovated.
@Tony P 1 under graduate student $33,360 per year "old style buildings"???
I love how Roland is calling him out. He is back peddling
He’s more concerned of what Disney thinks then what’s actually happening, he’s inept to say the least 🥴
@Island Republic well said
Disney may just pull their money now, with all this negative publicity, he overstated his comment and changed the topic quickly.
BCU: we don’t like music he was playing
Also BCU: we got Rick Ross and Glorilla for homecoming!
🤣🤣🤣
@RP9789 right even in the 90s there outfits were revealing
Facts ‼️‼️‼️‼️
Wow
Lol just saw them for the classics and it definitely wasn’t. 😂
The fact he keeps closing his eyes lets me know he's lying. Body language tells everything. The eyes are the window to your soul.
Roland
That was a great balanced interview.
Thank you
They just don’t want Reed to expose the shame there in, unreal 😡
Aunese Aunese exactly preach straight facts✊🏿💯
They're*
And shame is a virtue.
Ed Reed seemingly has no shame.
Read the Bible.
Did you expose things your parents did in the home? You want your kids to expose you?
Shame on them!! Them kids deserve better
They didn't went him to expose that they are stealing that was one of the reasons Prime left JSU!! That's why Ed kept saying Prime was right about everything???🤔🤔👀
💥EXCELLENT INTERVIEW RO-RO!! 💯🙌🏾
@Dee Jaiz you couldn’t have I stayed in the dorms at the front of the campus. All of them were horrible
Yeah I rode thru Southern and was shocked at how unattractive the campus was. I always thought it would be something else.
Our kids deserve so much better! I believe we as a community need to hold these struggling HBCU leaders’ a$$es to the fire! These babies deserve better.
Thank You Roland! Looking forward to the townhall meeting.
Bottom line if you want to find out the truth just ask students who either just graduated or are attending right now
Thank you !!!!
FACTS
Common sense in real-time.
If you watch the whole video yesterday. He had this fool on first, then Ed Reed, then three football players, and then representative from the alum board.
Facts, they’ve been speaking out… he just brushed it off live - especially @ 11:30 , & gaslighted them… they don’t care about these students….
Need him to talk and look us in the eyes. He talks with his eyes closed. That in itself speaks volumes. How can he not be authorized having keys?
Rule# 1: You don’t tell nobody what goes on in this house.
Rule#2: Repeat after me: Disney made me do it!
Way to stay on the job Martin ..Subscribed
The whole comments section full of past students saying that everything Ed said about the school has been going on for yrs. The secret is apparently out
Thank you Roland. I’m so proud of Reed and the BCU students.
Cindy Rolle exactly my sista preach ✊🏿💯
Yes definitely
He knew the rules he broke he knew the consequences he broke the rules it's his fault
It seems to me that there are a lot of people in leadership positions that have the mindset of. "This is the way it's always been" . At some point, the leaders of these schools have to start doing what's best for the students and the school versus their own personal gain.
Mr. Martin keeps it 💯 real!!!
This man slept thru the whole interview.
Solid interview by Roland Martin. Great work!
"Get your hand out my pocket!" Said the interim president 😂
He's right ALL PARTS of the campus don't look that way 🤣🤣🤣 they only dress up the admissions building. As someone who took a tour of that campus back in 2005/2006 he is FULL OF 💩. That campus has been looking like that since I took that tour, I knew exactly where he was. 🤣🤣🤣 That was the whole reason that I didn't go just raggedy and expensive. Them dorms are nasty AF, they got roaches, they're MOLDY and there is NO excuse.
@aregua1 she not lying my bro went their the dorm was disgusting 😊
I went to a predominantly white school and I had roaches.
@earlrobiii that's false!! It's definitely NOT like that at every HBCU. My daughter is a Senior at Hampton and it's not like that.
Tell us where you graduated from.
Good job Roland. 💪🏾💪🏾
Thank you for asking the tough questions Roland
Write me⬆️. M
Is there grace given on tuition??? Make what you said make sense
@OG 2 2 Nine Yup. He burned the bridge before getting a paycheck

Thank you Roland!!! Voice of the people… make sure you follow up
Oh the invitation you extended to the school
Anyone caught that he told Ed Reed they needed to raise 100M and later said they need 250M odd huh?
Shout out to you brother Roland for doing the real work and giving the people the real story.
Are you serious ... you believed that man ?
@Melissa Williams there’s no more story. This is over
What is the real story because the Administration is lying 😳
I really appreciate hearing both sides of this story.

The horrible building conditions to the malfunctions in the financial aide department
Same issues different day
Yo, if he’s going to do a complete interview with his eyes close, I would respect him if he wore a pair of sunglasses😎 and sit at a piano 🎹 and keep it real like Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles!!!! 🤣
Thank you Dr. Drake for clarifying the issues
I have to raise the question, why did y’all dismiss some of the alumni? It’s like the school is dealing with a power struggle. And Roland is right in the sense, the committee or board should be present!
Which committee lol?
