Thanks to Sheet Music Boss and Grant and Chopstix!! Sorry it’s been a hot minute since I’ve uploaded but I promise I’ve been working harder than ever planting and cultivating some seeds that should bear some very delicious fruit for all of you over the next 5 months or so.
@Drako Wulf I made my comment sound like I was stating what it was supposed to be saying, "what it ACTUALLY says" but I meant just exaggerating what I heard, what it felt like it "ACTUALLY" said. :)
listen to the transition from 9:50 to 10:00, the timbre of the notes sounds different, the audio is more wide, notes start to play after the "RUSH E" sooner than the wall of notes, and why does it need a TV on top? to cover something up maybe?
Awesome video Mark! I've often thought about digging into Fourier decompositions of speech to show how different vowel sounds are made but operationalizing it with a piano was amazing - great job!
For those who are wondering how the piano is able to roughly mimic human speech- the computing system scans the audio recording for what frequencies are being used and for how long. Additionally, it calculates which frequencies are close to an existing note(example the middle A note is 440 hz) and then generates that note based on the length of the frequencies. Lastly, all the note information is translated in a midi file which can be replayed in synths or musical softwares.
@therainman777 Yes I know there is an explanation but not everyone will understand how sine waves work or how each note corresponds to a specific set of frequencies. Producer terminology and such.
It was so funny that Mark rickrolled us with a piano (My Favorite Instrument). I loved the knowledge you get from these videos and Science is my favorite subject, followed by math then computer.
I wish you had been around when I was a kid. The lessons videos you have on your channel are amazing. Thank you for being you and sharing yourself with us!
Fun fact: the Green Needle Brainstorm toy is actually a Ben 10 Alien Force toy of the alien Brainstorm from about 12 years ago, so we know for sure Brainstorm is what it's actually saying!
I love Mark (not like that) because he is probably the most genuine youtuber on the planet. The only issue I have with him is I wish he came out with videos more often. However I do realize his videos and the his creations are not cheap and are complicated to make for the most part so I kind of understand why he only post videos once every 1 to 2 months.
Yup. The brain wants everything to make sense, even when it doesnt make sense. Random sounds can be translated into words, random shapes can be imagined into actual shapes. Not everything makes sense, but the brain wants everything to make sense.
I've wanted to use solenoids to make a modern clock with a mechanical chime with rods, which is a very similar in concept to what you have done here. A person could have the clock chime whatever they want. I also find chime rods give a better sound than recordings and digital reproductions.
Tech can get really close to digital reproductions of sounds but they'll always suffer the same flaw: Digital is, by definition, a series of ONs and OFFs. Audio hardware does a bit to help smooth it, and the way the sound is stored in software allows for a very high resolution of the waveform, but the physical signal generated by the digital chipsets is still chopped up into square-wave bits. Natural sounds, and indeed most of physics, is dependent on analog values. Instead of having a resolution of steps the waveform is generated as a pure mathematical function of a mechanical oscillation, which itself is the product of several other properties within the material including composition, density distribution, geometric shape, etc.. The sound from a speaker will always sound like it was made with a vibrating cloth or plastic disk (that which a speaker is made of). In a lot of ways it's no different then this piano imitating voice; you can hear the words, but it still sounds like a piano.
an actual piano can only play one instance of a single note at a time. that section of rush e there are at times 5 different parts all trying to play the same note. a real piano cannot deal with this hence it sounds distorted. A digital 'piano' can play as many parts at once simultaneously, so individual parts do not get played out.
I can agree on the sight/hearing concept. It even reminds me of the Yanny/Laurel trend. Captions spoil me sometimes, and there are many shows where I can’t tell what they’re saying unless I put on captions. Lately, I’ve tried to see how long I can watch an episode without reading the captions, but it’s really hard.
4:24: That is literally one of my favorite player piano videos on the internet, you can tell because I have 4 or 5 comments on it xD That piano is a 1916 Behr Brothers player piano with a double valve standard pneumatic action and is really something else, it plays perfectly and sounds amazing!
Awesome video Mark 👍🏻 You may be on par with some of the pioneers of video education like Bill Nye or Mr. Rogers. Keep it up. However, I'm calling BS on the fire.
@Liam Highducheck Could always just break it down into multiple pieces and have it played on separate pianos simultaneously, but the timing would have to be perfect.
Coming back to show my kids the brainstorm/green needle bit. I realized I could trick my brain into thinking it was green storm, or brain needle. That is, as Mark puts it so elegantly, bonkers.
This was sooo cool to watch, I learned so many things !! Could you please show us the hardware part of it ? Like how would you connect the chords and stuff to a computer to make it play something ? How is a woody Steinway compatible with electronics ?
Fun fact: Mark Rober is now one of extremely few humans on planet earth if any who have heard the full difficulty version of this song without the use of a speaker.
@Christian Sarmiento yeah I was kind of disappointed when it swapped to the midi audio but it’s clear that it would be better for the video if he swapped cause it just sounded like “questionable improv”
Not really, well I assume not because at 9:55 mark had to use the video audio because the dynamics weren’t properly set and at 9:50 the keys weren’t played with proper dynamics so it sounded weird
I've always struggled with that weird pattern-seeking bias. With samples that can sound like multiple things with prompting I always fail to hear it but one way. It's weird lol I remember listening to clips like that and hearing it as the second prompt when I hear the first one, or only being able to hear the first prompt and not the second. WHAT is going on in my brain
Really wish someone would figure out how many pianos and pianists you would need to actually play this and what the minimum number would be. That that would be an awesome project
7:43 this is really interesting because this is also essentially overtones no? They distinguish sounds without changing the dominant/fundamental note. Some people have figured out how to manipulate overtones to create two distinct notes.
I’ve never heard anyone say a piano is a string instrument. Every musician I have ever met, or anyone for that matter called it a percussion instrument.
I don't know how i have never found your channel before given how much I use KZclip. However, the video was amazing, one of the most interesting ones I have seen in a long time
I clicked on video to watch Rush E but got a great science lesson before even the song began. Wasn't expecting it but greatly appreciated it nonetheless 😃
I find a similar effect where when people are singing hymns in church but I haven't got the words, sometimes it's hard to decipher, but if I have the words on a screen or book it makes me wonder why I had difficulty understanding them.
Same for normal American pops. I always thought Taylor swift sang “got a lot of Starbuck lovers” until I read the lyrics. Adriana Grande is even harder.
8:20 yes I have heard this audio clip before. Film theory did a great video where he talks about this clip and how you can switch between Brainstorm and Green Needle with ease. He also talks about priming where he then plays the clip again where you are thinking about Brain Needle, and that isn’t even an option. Just a cool effect and I encourage you to watch his video when given the chance.
When it finished playing Rush E, it said 'That was INCREDIBLE!'. It means it has feelings and that amazed me that it reacts like a real human. If you think a bit, it can become great friend!!!! Also the Rickroll liked me more than the original.
@Oxhly it makes sense but like why? what's the point of the comment, what is it showing there's nothing ironic about what he's done so the joke doesn't really make sense
I like cheese 🧀
I like cheese🧀
Wow amazing! and I love your crunch labs box!❤😊
I want chopstix soooo bad! He's a wholesome child 🌚🌝
RUSH E 2
It was great to collaborate with you, Mark! Thank you for the invitation!
E
Make him do it
Make him play rush e 2 with chopsticks upgraded hopefully
HI
REAL!?!?!
try 100 key piano then play rush e on the piano upgraded rush e
"See if he can pick out the singer's actual voice in this classical piece of music history"
*Proceeds to rickroll us*
I did not know he rickrolled us but I might have mist it
?
He rickrolled us!
@Logan Hendricks Big point, but didn't Mark Rober invent the masterpiece?
I always go to the comments before the video. Thank you.
1:20 I did not expect a robot piano attempting to swear at Mark Rober to make my day. But it did.
@Joshua's gaming channel He attempted to swear...
That isn't swearing lol 😂
If you do anything as, make me warm my layers will sue your A-
that's the funniest part ngl
@Fardung Ardes same thing lol
Mark is not only smart but has a great imagination. Great work!!
Imagination?
Broo rush E 2 is out you know what time it is 🤯☠️
agreed!
"If you even make me WARM my lawyers are gonna SUE YOUR A-" Is the best quote from a piano.
It is so funny
@Wren 1:16
Time stamp?
Lol
I mean true, but I don’t feel like that’s a hard achievement.
What's trippy is i ended up listening to it so much that I can hear both "brain storm" and "green needle" as two distinct voices.
@Drako Wulf I made my comment sound like I was stating what it was supposed to be saying, "what it ACTUALLY says" but I meant just exaggerating what I heard, what it felt like it "ACTUALLY" said. :)
Greenstorm
I was able to process the two based on peripheral vision too... But you can also override what you hear just by thinking hard enough
im still hearing brain needle
Brain needle???????/////
Where
What an unexpected crossover! Rush E is the perfect final boss for chopsticks.
A
YO YOUR THE GUY WHO SYNCS MUSIC TO GAMES
Well now there is a new boss
Now its rush e 2
That piano talking = nightmare fuel. I haven't been this afraid of a piano since the one that attacked me in Super Mario 64 lol
It was the nightmare organ for me.
Piano in sm64: CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG CLANG
It’s pretty cute
And that LM2 boss lol
I haven’t been more afraid of a piano since the piano boss in luigi’s mansion 2 XD
8:20 I just found out that if I imagine it saying "Brain needle" or "Green storm" I actually hear it, that's so mind blowing 🤯
Brain is so easy to trick... Its crazy!
I hear “brain needle”😂
@Breaddie same
@burntoven93 Same
I heard brain needle explain that please?
I can’t believe that over 23 million people got rickrolled by a piano
I was overtaking the video and I saw Rick lol
Is no one gonna talk about the fact that he somehow managed to put an entire tv ON the piano.
Maybe it is a greenscreen
bro it,s animated by jared owen animations
the power of editing✨
It just appears there
listen to the transition from 9:50 to 10:00, the timbre of the notes sounds different, the audio is more wide, notes start to play after the "RUSH E" sooner than the wall of notes, and why does it need a TV on top? to cover something up maybe?
never thought i’d be rickrolled by a talking automatic piano and of course, Mark made it
me too
Awesome video Mark! I've often thought about digging into Fourier decompositions of speech to show how different vowel sounds are made but operationalizing it with a piano was amazing - great job!
Hello, that's it.
8
Wooo my favorite science KZclipr
Uhhhh did this need to be said in such a overly complicated way?
That was my question as well! I want to know how vocal formants differ.
That sounds like a long way of saying it's a vocoder.
@therainman777 Yes I know there is an explanation but not everyone will understand how sine waves work or how each note corresponds to a specific set of frequencies. Producer terminology and such.
Did you not notice that they explained that in depth already in the actual video?
When Rick said goodbye in never gonna give you up and the piano perfectly recreated the pitch of his voice I got chills great job mark
Everyone dreamt of playing this song infront of their classmates
Correct
Fun fact: the Green Needle Brainstorm toy is actually a Ben 10 Alien Force toy of the alien Brainstorm from about 12 years ago, so we know for sure Brainstorm is what it's actually saying!
YOOOOO
@Astromath me too
Didn't know Mikey watched ben 10
who tf asked
I hear greenstorm or brain needle
I love Mark (not like that) because he is probably the most genuine youtuber on the planet. The only issue I have with him is I wish he came out with videos more often. However I do realize his videos and the his creations are not cheap and are complicated to make for the most part so I kind of understand why he only post videos once every 1 to 2 months.
When you hear something and it's all weird, you will always hear something your brain WANTS you to hear
Yup. The brain wants everything to make sense, even when it doesnt make sense. Random sounds can be translated into words, random shapes can be imagined into actual shapes. Not everything makes sense, but the brain wants everything to make sense.
I love how he proceeds to Rick roll us like it’s nothing
I've wanted to use solenoids to make a modern clock with a mechanical chime with rods, which is a very similar in concept to what you have done here. A person could have the clock chime whatever they want. I also find chime rods give a better sound than recordings and digital reproductions.

I emotionally connected with the piano so hard.
This seems like an extremely complicated way to rickroll everyone. Well done.
@Danny_boi unless Mark Robert collaborates with Boston dynamics
Imagine getting rickrolled in a Mark Rober video
I agree 👍👍
i half expected it to happen but got tricked anyways
yes
9:49 the fact that the actual notes that were playing sounds almost nothing like rush e
an actual piano can only play one instance of a single note at a time.
that section of rush e there are at times 5 different parts all trying to play the same note. a real piano cannot deal with this hence it sounds distorted. A digital 'piano' can play as many parts at once simultaneously, so individual parts do not get played out.

Captions spoil me sometimes, and there are many shows where I can’t tell what they’re saying unless I put on captions. Lately, I’ve tried to see how long I can watch an episode without reading the captions, but it’s really hard.
Same, I've put captions on
I feel you. Its even worse with heavy and less common accents!
Not only creates the coolest piano ever but also rickrolled us in the process.
This has to be the most creative and complicated way to rickroll someone ever.
this was amazing, but I'd love to see the entirety of RUSH E being played by chopstick
If only someone had a piano were every key also was tuned to EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Interesting concept, do you think anyone had done that yet?
There’s probably an engineer somewhere
But who could that possibly be????
yeah
Lol i think someone actually did that, idk who though
Showoff. You make really cool videos though! 🙂🙃
I never thought I would get rickrolled by a piano.
4:24: That is literally one of my favorite player piano videos on the internet, you can tell because I have 4 or 5 comments on it xD That piano is a 1916 Behr Brothers player piano with a double valve standard pneumatic action and is really something else, it plays perfectly and sounds amazing!
Dude you hit me with a "the more you know". That was awesome. The rest of the content was great, thanks for the video....all your videos.
Awesome video Mark 👍🏻
You may be on par with some of the pioneers of video education like Bill Nye or Mr. Rogers. Keep it up.
However, I'm calling BS on the fire.
it would be fun to see a whole band that can play itself
Mark: The piano is no more complicated than it should be.
Also Mark: Makes the piano play the world's most improbable human piano piece just because
@Liam Highducheck Could always just break it down into multiple pieces and have it played on separate pianos simultaneously, but the timing would have to be perfect.
@Ian Krasnow You could technically call them engineers of rhythm and melody :P
@TuffCat *most musicians
@Ian Krasnow my brother is both
he helped my dad build an amp from scratch and also plays trombone.
Your use of the word “improbable” as opposed to “impossible” tells me you have way too much faith in pianists, but I admire your optimism
That's incredible!!! How can the piano not miss a key
it’s a robot 😎
Real fans of Mark Rober watch how the thing was made and listen to him explain it. I love your content! I watch your videos all the way through!
Coming back to show my kids the brainstorm/green needle bit. I realized I could trick my brain into thinking it was green storm, or brain needle. That is, as Mark puts it so elegantly, bonkers.
Thank you Mark Rober for doing everything we’ve wanted to do but were always afraid to do it
Would love to see you collaborate with Grant more!!!
Never realized how complicated the structure of a piano key is.
Yeah that and the explanation of the Fourier Transform were the coolest parts of the video, for me!
@Debt Collector woof woof woof woof
@E youtube auto translated that to "Bound Bound Bound Bound E"
@E rush
E
This was sooo cool to watch, I learned so many things !! Could you please show us the hardware part of it ? Like how would you connect the chords and stuff to a computer to make it play something ? How is a woody Steinway compatible with electronics ?
Never knew i would be rick rolled by a piano but great job on making this
It’s amazing how it sounds like it’s talking and literally sounds like anything it hears-
The inventor of the self playing piano is proud of you.
This was so awsome. Tks for all your hard work and time.🎉
Fun fact: Mark Rober is now one of extremely few humans on planet earth if any who have heard the full difficulty version of this song without the use of a speaker.
@Yorkzie he could have an un-edited play on his Patreon page, dunno. Or at least upload it there on a request ^^
CoolFool through their computer SPEAKER.....
@Christian Sarmiento yeah I was kind of disappointed when it swapped to the midi audio but it’s clear that it would be better for the video if he swapped cause it just sounded like “questionable improv”
@Yorkzie I noticed that too. If you focus, you can hear the difference between the midi audio and the piano audio.
Not really, well I assume not because at 9:55 mark had to use the video audio because the dynamics weren’t properly set and at 9:50 the keys weren’t played with proper dynamics so it sounded weird

WHAT is going on in my brain
Yeah! I didn’t even hear “Green Needles” It sounded more like “Grave stone” to me.
Really wish someone would figure out how many pianos and pianists you would need to actually play this and what the minimum number would be. That that would be an awesome project
9:07 is when the song is played
@JP&D Viergever literally in the title
@JP&D Viergever bro really replied who cares 🗿
@GD Gardengap Same
I hate long intros, like I just want to see the thing the title says…
@ash you're welcome
7:43 this is really interesting because this is also essentially overtones no? They distinguish sounds without changing the dominant/fundamental note. Some people have figured out how to manipulate overtones to create two distinct notes.
Holy crap that was incredible! I hope chopsticks is OK after all that
never thought i would be rickrolled by a piano that can play itself and talk
That also has laywers
Same
Same
Same
Same
Geez this piano has an ATTITUDE
I knew what was coming next when Mark said "this classical piece of music"
Before you explained the science of the talking I legitly thaught you just added a speaker to it. Impressive!
I never thought that I would be rickrolled by a talking piano
Mark you should go on americas got talent with that
I’ve never heard anyone say a piano is a string instrument. Every musician I have ever met, or anyone for that matter called it a percussion instrument.
Nice video mate! Enjoyed it! I was also not expected to get rickrolled (in a funny way)
Keep the videos up mate!
I never thought I would have gotten Rick rolled by a piano
I wish he made a tutorial for every build
The fact he managed to rickroll us was extreme.
Loving the "as you can C" puns
I C what you mean
@Sports94freak if you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly
5
@Sports94freak haha
@Wolfgameplays Thank you!
it's amazing how it didnt fry up after that insane apm
This piano needs to make a return soon
The weird fact that after 3 years of uni this video is the best explanation i have seen and helped me understand the Fourier Transform. Ty Grant
5:49 If you wonder that Mark has already rickrolled us by talking piano.
How can anyone not like this?! I dont see anyone else doing this.
NO
I never ever thought I would get rickrolled by a talking piano. Well done Mark
Ye
Yeah
That is a very unique sentence
Me neither, I love Mark Rober's Content!
hmmmmmmm
We need a full version of this
Never thought I will ever get rickrolled by a piano
The power of *E* is too strong
I don't know how i have never found your channel before given how much I use KZclip. However, the video was amazing, one of the most interesting ones I have seen in a long time
I never thought I'd get Rick Roll'd by a talking piano, but here I am.
This guy literally rickrolled us in the best way possible, congrats Mark
Ha,,I skipped it😎😎😎
Chop roll
meow meow meow meow
Spoilers
Yes
I clicked on video to watch Rush E but got a great science lesson before even the song began. Wasn't expecting it but greatly appreciated it nonetheless 😃
I find a similar effect where when people are singing hymns in church but I haven't got the words, sometimes it's hard to decipher, but if I have the words on a screen or book it makes me wonder why I had difficulty understanding them.
@ken ji all those caffeine addicted men with mood swings....
Plus Taylor Swift does like her coffee so it makes sense.
Same for normal American pops. I always thought Taylor swift sang “got a lot of Starbuck lovers” until I read the lyrics. Adriana Grande is even harder.
Did not expect robot piano to say That was incredible
8:20 yes I have heard this audio clip before. Film theory did a great video where he talks about this clip and how you can switch between Brainstorm and Green Needle with ease. He also talks about priming where he then plays the clip again where you are thinking about Brain Needle, and that isn’t even an option. Just a cool effect and I encourage you to watch his video when given the chance.
8:45 I can only hear brainstorm, not green needle
the fact that i understood the robot by looking away and hearing it for the first time makes it even creepier
Never thought I would get rick-rolled by a singing piano...
Well you just did
5:49 ..... ..... .... ... .. !
@chronic sloth you know the rules and so do I!
Same
me neither
Mark Rober 3b1b, and SMB in one video... the collab I never asked for but I always needed
those 3 consecutive green bars in Rush E were hilarious
True
This is so chaotic. I love it
That greeneedle and brainstorm part made my jaw drop, what I heard changed based on what I looked at!
The correct one is brainstorm, it’s from a Ben 10 toy omnitrix
I actually was able to hear the actual song while the piano was just playing random notes that were very close
Mark: creates a piano that can play Rush E perfectly
Fanchen: "I personally wouldnt publish something so unpolished"
I was looking for a fanchen comment and here it is
Ahhh, I see that Charlie’s viewers are here too…
He didn't create it though Edelweiss did
i understood that reference
@I just Wanna pass Was it? I'd like to see you try. So come on, give us an awe inspiring performance.
When it finished playing Rush E, it said 'That was INCREDIBLE!'. It means it has feelings and that amazed me that it reacts like a real human. If you think a bit, it can become great friend!!!! Also the Rickroll liked me more than the original.
i’m just thinking about buying one if it’s real
i’m curious is the piano a real thing?
Fun Fact: if you hear talking pianos without captions, they’ll sound like random notes.
I'm impressed that Chopstix did that WITHOUT lighting on fire.
I wish he’d have explained how the foot pedals work too😢
He really just Rick rolled us with a piano 😂😂😂
Mark : let’s play rush e on this talking piano!
Also mark : explains how the entire piano works.
@Oxhly it makes sense but like why? what's the point of the comment, what is it showing
there's nothing ironic about what he's done so the joke doesn't really make sense
???
Makes no sense.
ummm yes that's the entire point. the method and challenge
So that our watch times get longer
Well I don't know about you but I'm very curious about how it works as well as hearing it okay rush E
People worried about AI art and I’m here worrying about a googley eyed piano
I thought I'd never see the day I get Rick-Rolled by a talking piano
I love how it started smocking I was like OH CRAP ITS GONNA CATCH ON FIRE- but it didn’t. 😂
