watching two grown men contemplate on the similarities between their wifes and their disney princess crushes is the cutest thing i have seen in a long time.
My favorite Disney couple is Rapunzel and Eugene. ESPECIALLY if you watch Tangled: The Series, when he tries to propose to her, and she ultimately says no ( which is shocking for everyone. ) But GOSH, the scene where Eugene talks to her about it, and he's so understanding, compassionate, and basically says he'll wait as long as he has to to make sure she is ready, and he's sorry for springing the question so early. Just, ugh, they're good.
@Kristina Huchison No, "Florian" is 18. The 35 thing is an internet misconception, but the storyboards have him at 18. Not that 14 and 18 are good either but...for the time its at least far better than 14 and 35.
@Brianna Flynn doesn’t turn 26 until the third season of the series, it has a birthday episode confirming it. Plus Snow White and Florian are 14 and 35 I believe
O'Malley is also a VERY positive example of a stepfather entering into the lives of a mom and her kids. His main goal is always to aid the mom in not only raising and helping her kids, but also to make her, and therefore the kids, happy as well. They step up to a role where they really didn't have to, which my own stepfather did.
I love that he makes a point to include the kids in just about everything he does with Duchess. He gets a bit of one on one time with them and bonds with everyone individually and collectively. He doesn't try super hard to get them to like him, he just treats them with respect and is himself around them.
They forgot to mention that Tarzan chose to go back to England with her first before Clayton's betrayal changed his priorities towards protecting his family, where then Jane changed her mind near the end of the movie. So they both made the choice.
@G. B. they have been biased for a while now. this video was still lurking in my "watch later" list, but i have to say, i unfollowed months ago. they weren't like that in the beginning. a lot has changed.
Yeah, not gonna lie…I felt like these dudes were bias against the dudes. Lol. Not incredibly so, but they were definitely more critical of the dudes than the woman characters 🤔
Jane also didn't leave her family behind. My impression was that her father was her family, and he stayed, too. Also, you don't see it in the movie, but in the sequel, they are shown living in the tree house Tarzan's parents built. I recommend the sequel if you are curious about the follow-up (like seeing how Jane and her father actually live in the jungle full-time). The animation is not as high quality, and the voice actors are different. But still a cute movie to pass the time.
@Jorge Da Silvano not really no they said something similar to this: “he’s letting her go and is saying she’s free to stay but she doesn’t have to but she chooses to..” they basically skipped that entire scene with Tarzan getting dressed, leaving his family, and the boat with Clayton locking them up
I think Ariel's willingness to throw away her life wasn't just because of Eric but because Triton had just committed a major betrayal of her trust and made her feel like she didn't really have a home where she could feel safe and be herself anymore. So at the time it didn't really feel like a sacrifice, it was like Luke Skywalker leaving Tatooine after the moisture farm was torched.
@Ferret Queen "happily ever after"(quote) Thanks for sharing your perspective. I've seen lots of racial violence. I've had my share of people trying to drag me into some form of bigoted battle. Therefore, I'm unable to share your viewpoint of her wedding meant that she was now walking into a state of bliss. Even in today's world, a biracial marriage is anything but bliss! The truth as I know it: is that both sides have a bone to pick with the party who, " failed to stay in their own lane. " But, I'd like to think it was a Cinderella happily ever after... if the real world would just stop preventing me from dreaming childish dreams.
@Ferret Queen "selfishness... shouldn't be reinforced"(quote) Hmmm. That's an interesting perspective that you're sharing. You think that a child crying about her daddy being turned into a worm... because, of a child's act of selfishness; is a form of reinforcement? Ursula was winning! Eric got a lucky shot... Yeah, because of Ariel the human race and the mer- people have to make an adjustment, they have to put aside their prejudice and fears... and all that takes time. I don't know that Ariel would want the heartache, if she knew upfront; about all the gossip and backbiting that she'll be forced to endure because, " literally: she's a fish out of water". We can't even get along with ourselves and we're all part of the human race! Hmm
@Ferret Queen Ariel expressed a wish to live on land even before she laid eyes on Eric, so it never was only about him. How could she have known that Ursula was using her to target her father? As far as she knew, she was the only one to suffer if she failed to get that kiss within three days. And you seem to forget that Triton destroyed all of Ariel's collection of human artifacts, so it hardly was strange that she searched help from somebody else. But she would also save Eric's life twice and made it possible for him to defeat Ursula and earned her happy ending. Ariel was a tad thoughtless at times, but I don’t think that calling her selfish and brainless is fair.
@Mia Kiceh even if it doesn't need to be taught, it shouldn't be reinforced. Plus, kids will sum it up and only see how Ariel got a happily ever after, which would have gone in the opposite direction in real life. Ariel is the most brainless Disney princess ever, give me Moana any day.
I want to point out how Naveen specifically says as he is practicing his proposal, “I can get a job, maybe two!” This says a LOT about how much he respects Tiana and her desires and dreams. He comes from royalty and could probably win his parents over to get them money, but no. He is excited at the thought of supporting her through genuine hard work, just like she has always done. It shows he is willing to make sacrifices for her and that he now shares her dreams and aspirations. And the best part is that, in the end, they find happiness and a comfortable lifestyle in the middle.
This is such an interesting take because you're so right. Imagine your father bursting into your room and trashing the place. Its unacceptable in every feasible way. I wouldn't feel safe at all after seeing that violence.
I found it refreshing that Mulan and Shang aren't properly together by the end, but are taking it slow. They need time to know each other as themselves, and not as comrades.
Watching this, I cannot believe how old the Aristocats is (1970) and how modern its romance plot is compared to some more modern Disney movies. I mean, single mom with three kids ? Lonesome alleycat who just wants to flirt at first but then takes the kids as his own ? Them working out their class difference AND the question of the kids AND Madam AND being healthy every step of the way ? Given it was the last movie Walt Disney was personally involved in, it's amazing how the studio evolved from Snow White and Sleeping Beauty to this dynamic, and the many layers of Duchess : she's a mom, but she's also a girl smitten with a boy, loves to sing and dance, cares for the kid and Madam...
I guess it was more possible to be "modern" if the characters were animals? "Lady & The Tramp" is an unexpectedly mature story too, but they got away with it because the main characters are dogs. "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty" are fairytales though and didn't need very complex romances back then.
I'd love to see pacha and chicha from the emperor's new groove on the list sometime. Pacha's a great dad, they're such a cute couple and chicha is so helpful when they're trying to make it back to the palace before yzma. also robin hood and maid marian; one of the few relationships that had quite a bit of history and finding ways around the things that separated them
I think Milo and Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire would be a great addition to another Disney Couples episode! Their dynamic and the way their relationship progresses is really interesting; it feels like a cross between Tarzan/Jane (in the sense of Milo teaching Kida how to read her language) and Fix-it Felix/Sergeant Calhoun (in the sense of less physically strong but resourceful guy and strong woman).
PLEASE. The best relationship in Disney at all (ok caveat, David and Nani). There's no immediate kiss, no romance right off the bat, he's simply there to support and appreciate her and she's there to learn from and teach him. They're friends to start and they trust and respect each other. It's fantastic!
@Diana Popova To be fair, Demetri wasn't trying to be in a relationship with her at the start. They were holding auditions for the part of Anastasia, and the original plan was for all three to be in on it. The scheme would put the girl in a better position, too. He even saw it as beneficial for the Grandmother, since she'd get a granddaughter. It was dishonest, but he really saw it as a "win-win" situation for everyone involved (other than the real Anastasia, wherever she was, but she's probably dead, so no big deal). Even when Demetri saw that Anya was interested in going - without understanding it was a scam - and he decided to keep her in the dark, he still wasn't trying to be romantic with her at that point, and it still would result in her getting what she was looking for: a family. So in his mind, he was just conning two people instead of one, and from his point of view, he was giving Anastasia & the Grandmother what they wanted, so he could justify lying to them. He thought everyone would end up happy. Also, he was living in a country with a collapsed government and economy, and he was just trying to find a way to survive & get out of there. If he could get rich while he was at it, all the better. It was wrong to be dishonest. I just wouldn't call it "toxic" and I think it makes a difference that he was in extreme circumstances. Was it wrong for Jean Valjean to steal the bread?
I wanted to ask for this and I am so happy this comment was so high up! Please do! I think this made me think romantically of men when I started being tween lol :D
Nani and David from "Lilo and Stitch" could also be an Honourable Mention. David clearly has feelings for her, and doesn't rush Nani into anything, knowing how hard it is for her to find a job and raise Lilo. He also treats Lilo like a little sister.
david is hands down in my top 5 disney men, he’s so sweet and respectful and he’s there for them through absolutely everything. he saves stitch not because he likes stitch, but because lilo would be devestated
@Jennifer Gerry I thought Pacha was a little bit too nice at times for his own good, he’s probably second though, but David just feels so realistically good
@RoseOfTheNight4444 no because Nani isn’t her mom. She is her legal guardian which only means an authority figure in charge of well-being. Its not common but sometimes teachers or non-relatives can hold this title too depending on the situation. Its sorta like being a godmother, but Nani is her older sister. Think of it like permanent babysitter duty
I think the one part you guys really missed on Shang and Mulan was the motive behind Shang trying to send Mulan away after they find out she's a woman. He was supposed to kill her, the penalty for what she did was death. He very well could have been trying to send her away for her own good, and the guilt during the parade is knowing that everyone is alive because of Mulan.
I love that scene in the movie, because when he sees her kids (and obviously they're hers), he looks worried for a split second that he was flirting with a married woman. And he later becomes a father to them because that's what they needed.
i also think its unfair to call Tarzan manipulative for promising the gorillas. He was told (clayton insinuated) that if she saw the gorilla she would stay. So he thought now that she seen them, she would stay. He had not been taught the complexities of human interaction very well and would not understand that just because she saw them that would change her choice. He takes many things at face value with a simpler mindset.
Yep! Jane kicked him away when he tried to lift her skirts and, while Tarzan may have been confused as to why he didn't try to lift them again because she made it pretty clear that she didn't want him to do that. And, now I'm wondering if Jane's father at some point had to give Tarzan some version of a sex talk! 🤣 Someone has to explain it to him and Jane was raised in Victorian England. Eccentric, progressive father or not, I doubt she knows anything more beyond kissing. 🤭
And it's REALLY not fair to judge Tarzan to societal standards for personal space when he grew up raised by gorillas and never even seeing another human!
They didn't talk about how Tiana basically sacrificed everything in the end as well. She chose marrying him and staying a frog over becoming human and getting her dream restaurant. She sacrificed her entire life's hard work up until that point. Hence they showed that they would both sacrifice anything for the other. In the end she became a princess and broke the curse because of their love.
I don't see how not knowing how to change back is a sacrifice. They didn't have a choice. By happenstance, marrying her made her a princess so kissing a princess breaks the spell. They didn't have any other royalty around to try that on.
I see this point get brought up a lot, but the thing is, she didn't really sacrifice her dream. Sacrifice involves personal choice, willingly giving something up in exchange for something else. She didn't willingly give up her dream restaurant to marry Naveen, nor did Naveen coerce her into letting go of her dream. Outside circumstances made it impossible to attain, so she made peace with that and let it go in order to be happy with the person she loved rather than blame him for the loss, becoming lonely and embittered. The loss of the dream restaurant is like putting an offer down on your dream house, or applying to your dream college, and not making the cut. It's outside of your control, so it isn't a sacrifice, it's just a lost dream. In a way, I think it was good for her to lose it, because I think making peace with the idea that you could lose the thing you want most can make you think about that thing in a healthier way (à la Jedi Code, lol). She was determined, but also I think a little misguided, when trying to make her father's dream of owning a restaurant come true. Having the dream snatched away allowed her to let go of that lingering grief over her dad's death and find a healthier reason within herself to want the restaurant. She realizes that the restaurant isn't the point of her dad's dream, her dad's dream is about doing things he loves with the people he loves most. So she's not being pushed to the brink of her capabilities by the weight of her dad's memory anymore, now she's walking hand in hand with the love of her life and blossoming into her own.
9:30 I used to think Shang just told Mulan to go home because he was angry at her for deceiving him too. And while I still think he was angry at her, I think he also was trying to protect her. He spared her life in the mountains, and here she comes, dressed in men's clothes, in a PARADE in the CAPITAL CITY. He knows he can't intimidate Chi-Fu into keeping his mouth shut like he did before. Not to mention his other soldiers. I think he believed her, or at least was open to the possibility, and was trying to make her leave before people started asking questions.
I'd also like to think that if the emperor got word of it, he would have executed Mulan and her family, and punished Shang for not reporting it. A woman in the military is against everything they believed in during those times
I not agreeing that much. But indeed, seconds before the enemies went out of the dragon costume, he was 'looking around', suspecting and wondering. So, if could be that he was suspecting because he took in consideration Mulan's words, or he was just thinking 'wtf this dragon so close, they are breathing in my neck '
With Shang, I noticed after a couple more watches that after Mulan told him about the Huns and before he meets the emperor, he does very subtly look around. So he did believe her. And as for Naveen, the very first time he meets Tiana, he flirts with her but she brushes him off. And rather than doing the cliche of pushing it, he just casually accepted the rejection and went on his way. I always liked that about him.
@M L naveen had a big head, so he thought “i can get any woman i want, it’s okay if this one woman doesn’t like me” until he’s caught up in the forest with her and they learn more about each other. he appreciates the fact that she’s a hard worker too! SHE TAUGHT HIM HOW TO MINCE WHEN NO ONE ELSE WOULD ✋😫
Not to mention the fact that while sometimes in fiction, even when the guys have thinner legs than the girls (whether they be extra or slim or just by comparison if not in general THICC), we’re going to have to make an exception with Tiana and Naveen (as frogs) because while Naveen was never EXTRA THICC, he, as a frog, certainly has wider legs than Tiana, who would be even more meaty as a human in the veins of the Disney Princesses who came before Moana, who is the most muscular one (especially the legs) alongside Mulan (THICC).
I love Meg as a character. I'm glad that you brought up the fact that even though she seems like a villain, she herself is a victim. It annoys me when ppl say "oh she started off bad but Hercules changed her view on people and she became good." No, she started off as a good person and got slapped in the face for it. I think that's extremely relatable. Trying to be a good person, but feeling like all it gets you is grief, so you just stop caring. Hercules didn't change her, he gave her a reason to be the good person she always was. Love them as a couple 🥰
I love that Duchess and O'Malley were number one! They remind me of myself and my husband. We come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. He's more of that down to earth, says what he thinks type and I was raised to be more "proper" and gentle and censored in my speech. We had a lot of issues understanding why one another did certain things the way we did or why our life experiences shaped certain viewpoints that we held. You mentioned that O'Malley didn't really understand Duchess's love for her human and how that life meant so much to her, but he respected that it had importance to her and was sympathetic to that. In our relationship, we've discovered just how important that is. We don't always have the life experiences to understand the point of view that the other one has, but being sympathetic to each other and valuing each others feelings on things we don't understand has worked wonders for our relationship! I love hearing you talk about that because it really is super important!
Same here. I grew up an only child, not rich but not wanting for anything really, not spoiled but I never went hungry. Huge room, 4 poster bed, all that. My husband shared his room with his 3 brothers, didn't have hardly anything, and used an outhouse. DIRT poor. It really has shaped our lives, which in turn has shaped our marriage.
I don’t know if anyone else has suggested it but I’d love to see a video like this with Miss Bianca and Bernard from The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under ❤️
New idea for Disney couples to rank : - Esmeralda/Phoebus - very underrated relationship to me, especially compared to how Frollo lusts for Esmeralda and Quasi falls heads over heels for her and sees her as an angel. Phoebus sees her as who she is, they fight, argue, save each other a couple of times, and they kiss in the middle of the movie, so the rest of it is actually them being in a relationship and facing challenges together. - Beauty and the Beast just because I want to see how you guys handle the whole locked in a tower thing - Anna and Kristoff/Hans - compare the two dynamics we see in these couples - Not a Disney movie buuuuut sorta - Anastasia and Dmitry ! - The Encanto couple relationships - Felix and Pepa, Julieta and the dad, Dolores and Mariano...
I love Aristocats so much. I love how even though Thomas is like "Oh shit kids???" for a second he immediately after gets this big grin on his face and starts doting on them, too. And Duchess isn't shamed for being a single mom ONCE throughout the whole movie.
Yeah, it’s definitely more progressive for its time and the owner herself is a happy bachelorette and not pining for a man. It’s too bad my 4 year daughter mover got into the movie 😔
@Lore Catan no yeah I totally agree, but I feel like this theme would stand out a lot more if it was about an actual human single mom with children. I think this story’s message is mostly the fact that a single mother can still fall in love with a guy that loves her and her kids equally. I never questioned the fact that she was a single mother as a kid because they’re cats, and I knew that with animals, being a single parent is normal. Ofc changing the cats to humans would make the story really boring for a child, and I still love it non the less. But I feel like the idea of Duchess not being shamed for being a single mom falls flat just because she’s cat. However in all cases, single parents should NEVER be shamed. People change, and sometimes tragic things happen that we cannot control. Which is why I love the Aristocats’ message that some strangers can become family
@Katlyn Dobransky yeah obviously but it's a cat love story depicting human themes for humans to watch. The fact that the "single mom" theme wasn't shown in a negative light still counts for a lot.
Thank you for rating Aristocats the best. Growing up it was my favorite movie, just because I love cats! I actually wore out our copy of the videotape, so we got a DVD copy. When I was older and better able to appreciate story and animation and all that, I loved it even more. My dad pointed out that the kittens are named after famous people who were French or associated with France: Marie Antionette is rather obvious, but Berlioz was a famous composer and Toulouse was a famous painter, and they even included those influences in the movie!
Can we also appreciate the fact that from the word "go" Megara was being manipulated by Hades? It was not her decision to deceive Herc; she didn't have a choice. Even then, she stands up to Hades after getting to know Hercules: "I don't care, I'm not going to help you hurt him". And her character growth is amazing - she goes from resenting men because she was so deeply hurt by one to sacrificing her own life to save Hercules.
I know that Bluey isn't a movie, but I seriously would love to see if you two had a Top 5 Best Parenting/Relationship-Building Episode list! Kids are supposed to learn from Bluey, but parents are learning just as much. I also love that it's a series focusing a lot on a father that not only is involved with his children, but his daughters. And he doesn't complain about them constantly! 👍 He actually loves them and nowhere says he wished he had boys. As a girl who also had an older sister, I wish I saw that when I was little. Anyway, stay safe and keep making great videos! 💚
@April Hitchcock I agree! Especially Wagon Ride. How many times have you heard a kid relentlessly ask for their parent's attention and the parent just ignores them, or just yells at them in public? It's so sad, and in that episode when Bluey is impatient, Bandit teaches her to get his attention respectfully and I wish every parent could do that.
Bluey is an AMAZING show. As an “older” parent of young ones (we were in our 30s when we started having children), I absolutely love some of the things Mum and Dad say. Such a great family show that even adults can laugh with and enjoy.
@Rebecca Graminski Right! Like Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, The Simpsons--they can all be really funny, but they make families seem like they're all unhealthy or that no one is respectful to each other. Your family members should be your best friends, you know? Bluey doesn't even have sibling rivalry! That's huge for cartoons!
Yes! I personally don't know any parents of young kids that don't like Bluey. I love that Bluey portrays respectful parenting instead of snarky kids vs dumb/overly strict adults.
So true about it taking *way* more than love. Mom and Dad are kinda opposite sides of the tracks, Mom from a poor background and Dad being solidly upper-middle class. Dad was *thoroughly* smitten with Mom while, from her telling of it, Mom spent most of their courtship trying to *scare Dad off.* One of her attempts was bringing a list of questions from a Catholic pre-marriage course to one of their early dates and running through them like she was conducting a job interview. Dad's reaction? "Finally! Someone GET'S IT!" They've had a lot of rough patches, from Mom having to teach Dad what leftovers are to Mom almost dying, but they've been married 40 years and counting.
@veronica a. perez Thank you! They're relationship isn't perfect by any means, but I think it's a great model of love through adversity. I'll bring that idea up with them! Dad's already a writer (did copywriting as a job for a while and wrote, but never officially published, a couple short stories) and Mom has a habit of writing extensive letters to family.
@brigidtheirish I'm a devout Catholic, so reading your story was inspirational and comforting. Your parents' love story is a book I'd love to read. So happy your mom is thriving and well. Maybe they should write a book together to uplift and encourage these new generations about what love and sacrifice are about. It's something my husband and I are trying to inculcate into our kids.
@Vlad It really can! And Mom's one of the most understanding people I know. Dad says she has to be to put up with him and that he's lucky to have found her. She's not actively dying, which is a huge improvement. Thank God Dad didn't let her believe the doctors who said nothing was wrong and kept looking for a doctor who'd *listen.* Granted, she probably wouldn't have entirely, but she has this annoying tendency of insisting she's fine when she clearly *isn't.* Probably because she'd never *been* fine, so "less awful" counts as far as she's concerned. Her health is still poor most of the time, but modern medicine isn't a miracle machine even when you have competent doctors who *LISTEN TO THEIR PATIENTS.* Doctors who don't has been kind of a *theme* in my life.
How on earth you haven't made a video about ATLA? No other show comes remotely close to catching my empathy. Absolutely insane character development. Focus on Appa's lost days please!!
Sometimes I forget you both have partners outside of this because you often give me the married for 30 years couple vibes AND THEN I remember that this is how actualy f*cking friendship looks like and apart from the amazing video I am very thankful to have you both on screen showing everyone that men CAN have very wholesome friendship with each other. I hope you get what I mean...
@Captain Mercurian true but its still kinda funny that "Ping" had *shorter* hair than a bunch of the men but the exact same beautiful womanly face and feminine voice as Mulan yet everyone is still like 😱 she's a ladyyyy?!?! Only when they see the chest binder. I feel like Li Shang was attracted to Ping, felt conflicted about it and overeacts during the big reveal ngl 😬
Thomas O'Malley was the MAN! Ran across a damsel in distress and her children, takes the time out of his life to not only get them home safe, but also show them a great time and help take their mind off their problems, with zero expectation for anything in return. Then he stepped up even more to help save them again. Duchess is just an angel, sweet and devoted mother. Their love, including the kittens, seems like it develops naturally, with nobody trying to make it happen.
Mulan and Shang are my favorite because they have a relationship built on mutual respect. He doesn’t do a 180 when he finds out she’s a woman he already has a trust and respect but now that feeling can grow in an unexpected way. It’s the best because there was zero chance of romance when they met which means any emotions and impressions are pure and I uninfluenced by lust and romance. I think he’s allowed to feel a little betrayed by the lie but he comes around quickly and sheds an entire cultural norm and bias in less than ten minutes. He approaches the romance after with respect and no expectations. I don’t know I just think they are the gold standard of the Disney princess line up
Suggestions for part 3: Lady & Tramp (Lady And The Tramp) Milo & Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) Robin Hood & Maid Marian (Robin Hood) Aurora & Prince Philip (Sleeping Beauty) David & Nani (Lilo And Stitch) Your welcome!
What I loved about Tarzan’s ending is Jane’s father not only gave her his blessing, but stayed with her. You don’t always see that in films. It is always the parent letting go versus deciding to stay.
@Mister Muffinut Probably because Lady Tremaine's name is only mentioned once in the Cinderella film, and Grimhilde's name is never mentioned in the film or any other media that has her in it. She's literally only ever called "Evil Queen."
@Mister Muffinut While I did know Lady Tremaine's name, I never heard of Queen Grimhilde before. Ive only ever heard her be referred to as "The Queen" or "Evil Queen" (or Regina) So maybe that's why
When you gave the initial list I thought “well duchess and Thomas are clearly the most healthy couple here” he immediately is down to sacrifice it all for her kittens 🙌🏻
I used to have a relationship with a boy who came from a completely different culture than I. In his culture, the woman is subservient and I was raised as an independent, western girl with her own wants and wishes. Our economic backgrounds didn't work either. I ended up paying for everything all the time since he would get himself in debt just to give me something nice. Besides that, he was super manically depressed and put all of his struggles in my lap to fix and that was never going to work at all. (note: if you or your partner suffer from mental health issues, please go find a professional to handle it, don't dump it all on your partner)
I remember rewatching Tarzan as an adult vs child. I somehow forgot that Clayton was out to kill and he hung himself with the vines. Disney somehow slides in really dark topics in their movies.
I noticed something about Mulan when I watched it a couple of years ago: Her black hair is outlined in red, whereas Shang's is outlined in blue. Can't be unseen and I'm pretty sure it's a hidden clue at her gender.
It's almost certainly just natural highlights and a way to show variety in character design. Yao has reddish hair outlines too. Some people have natural reddish highlights. Using red can also indicate a more brown shade rather than black. Using blue highlights in the hair tells the viewer that the hair is truly inky black, rather than brown.
@pGFTuv in Western countries, until the last centuries (when colors were inverted), red/pink was used for males too, because it was related to blood, so courage and strenght, and blue was used for women because it was related to purity (ie. The dress of Holy Mary)
That's interesting! As an Asian, I never realize this because the gender color assignment (i.e. red/pink = feminine; blue = masculine) is based on a Western culture. I'm sure in many Asian countries there is gender color assignment, but not necessarily the same formula (e.g. pink/red in my culture is worn by manly men).
I've always adored The Princess and the Frog because it was one of the first movies in which I personally could ever identify character growth on *both* sides. It wasn't just "Oh, the guy decided he could give up his free wheeling ways," or "The hard working girl realized she had to cut loose once in a while." There was a middle ground that they discovered together. And then you throw in Lotti, who was willing to pass on her dream of marrying a prince so that she could save her friend. There is so much selfless love in this movie, and it remains a favorite of mine to this day.
@reikun86you're welcome. And yeah I mean they were helping her but help doesn't mean do it all for her. Help is just that. Help. Alongside. Not for. And I'm sure there were times when lottie wished she could just swoop in and fix it so Tiana had her restaurant sooner, but she knew tia well enough to know she wouldn't have wanted that.
@Kelsey Peterson Thank you for saying that. It really grinds my gears when people say that Lotte and Big Daddy should’ve gave Tiana the money or bought the mill for her. It would negate everything her dad taught her about working for the things in life.
Lottie and Tiana are an awesome example of best friends being there for each other. I agree with one of the other comments in here about lottie having that blue dress just waiting on hand for whenever Tiana would need it. She really was there for Tiana any way she could be. If Tiana hadn't been so determined to do things herself I guarantee you that restaurant would have been open long ago. I've been in both situations myself, being the one down and needing help but not wanting to just let someone else do it all for you, and being the one trying to help and getting the "you can help but I Don't want charity" attitude. They really are a great example of true friendship and I love them for that.
When I tell you it irks me that this movie doesn't get enough praise. Honestly you ask most people why they didn't like the movie and usually the ONLY reason is because she was a frog. That's it.
Is it weird to say that I never actually thought of Shang as a romantic partner for Mulan? Even when I was a kid, I just thought of them as a group of guy friends and one happened to be a girl
Tarzan and Jane are one of my favorite (or even my favorite) Disney couple since their relationship develops over time and, even if its a montage, we get to see it bloom. Most disney couples have the '3 day' trope where they fall in love over a short period of time, but iirc its stated in Tarzan that the group had been in the jungle for several weeks. and the romance wasn't immediate, it started as curious friendship and there was a lot of mutual between them- she showed him human society/reading/writing, etc, and he would show her parts of the jungle (also the look they give one another in the montage where she looks away shyly and he just stares at her is so aaaaaaa)
The Aristocats was one of my favorite movies when I was a child and I didn’t know the name of it until I was an adult. I would just call it “ the movie with the cats” and everyone would just know 😂😂😂
I think Shang is more compassionate for Mulan and the why in that moment than you give him credit for. The very second Mulan reveals she did all of it to save her Dad, he immediately looks up in shock. Because he gets it. The war took his own father from him and he didn’t even get a chance to try to save him whereas Mulan sacrificed everything to save hers, fully accepting even the possibility of either dying in war or being caught and killed. You can see the conflict on his face as he considers whether or not to go through with the law of killing Mulan which eventually leads to his decision to let her go. There is compassion here even if Shang is putting up a front to keep his pride in tact and his soldiers still under his command. They both loved their fathers so much and as a result, they understood each other. Even if Shang is hurt about the deception, he still has to maintain his composure and have no outward compassion to keep pride and not look weak in front of his soldiers.
@Warrior Maiden Mulan has a hard role in this too, because just by virtue of what she's chosen up to this point, her existence is in opposition to what Shang has chosen to do in his life. by the standards of their society, Mulan was supposed to bring honor to her family by leaning into her prescribed role, and becoming a better woman. instead, she broke the rules at great personal risk and would've ended up dying, sacrificing literally everything she had to give, if it weren't for the fact that it's Shang's call, and Shang identifies with her. and Mulan's method worked. she didn't just save her father... she saved all the soldiers on that mountainside, and Shang personally. she literally took an arrow for him, which was what blew her cover in the first place. everybody that Mulan has decided to protect has lived. and that ability was only accessible to her because she was non-compliant. meanwhile, everything Shang has done so far has been an attempt to lean in, and be a better man... and what does he have to show for it? it is really painful, because it critiques conformity as a strategy for achieving your desired ends, and potentially recontextualizes his whole life path as a wrong move. but if that is true... then he needs to know. that is the difficult role that Mulan has taken up, just by being who she is. she's the one who makes this difficult truth apparent. and instead of hating her for it... he loves her. of course he's not at liberty to pivot his opinion on her immediately, but you can tell that he wasn't entirely alright with leaving her behind. the other soldiers aren't either. they just won against the Huns, as far as they know, but nobody is celebrating. because the person who deserves the credit for that victory was mercilessly ejected from their midst due to an arbitrary standard that really doesn't feel like it should matter. but it has to... doesn't it? well, no, it doesn't. Mulan shows up again, with new information, capable as she's ever been and unwilling to back down. she's still got people to protect, and disrupting the status quo hasn't been a wrong move for her yet. the real question is... can she convince the others to break the mold with her? she can't do this alone... they all became capable together. the confrontation in the mountain wasn't where they used what they'd learned, it's here. the real test starts then, and it mostly hinges on whether Shang can recognize and utilize the skills of one of his best soldiers. their relationship goes far beyond romance... honestly, it probably wasn't even a romance until the last couple minutes of the movie. but the relationship that was there is really interesting, and very important for them both.
I think the law part is very very important. As a high ranked militar, Shang had the duty to kill her, but he didn't; he said it's bc she saved her life, but it's clearly not a difficult choice for him to take (let Mulan alive). So he shows he has values that are more important than just follow the laws of his nation and also that he actually liked her (as a person, not romantically).
The Princess and the Frog will always hold a special place in my heart. The way Naveen looks at Tiana when she talks about her dreams is just amazing. He’s genuinely interested in her dream and wants to help her to get there even if he has been cut off. Although Tiana is blinded by her dream, this helps the plot so much because it leads to him showing even more interest in her dreams. They would both do anything to keep the other happy and I live for that.
there's something to be said for couples therapy at the very end; it helped me a lot when I was about to leave my ex to have that therapy with him. I was hoping that therapy might help us to communicate some difficult things with each other - tbh, I hoped it would help me to get him to see some things that he seemed unwilling to see. couples therapy helped me to see that the conversation I wanted was a non-starter.
Great video, I was in a beautiful marriage before my now ex wife left me, i still love her and most times i cant stop thinking about her, i am doing my very best to get rid of the thought of her, but i just cant, i love her so much, i don't know why i am bring this here for, i cant stop thinking about her.
its always difficult to let go of someone you love, i was in a similar situation my wife for 12 years left me, i couldnt just let her go i did all i could to get her back, i had to seek the help of a spiritual adviser who helped me bring her back
When they said “Tarzan better build her a Swiss Family Robinson palace”, there was a TV show and they moved into his parents’ tree house. Also there was an episode I loved when Jane’s friends from England actually showed up in the jungle, and Jane is like “Tarzan please wear this suit we’re going to have a garden party” but he refuses, thinking she’s embarrassed of him. So Jane’s dad talks to him and is like “she lives in your jungle world everyday. Would it be so bad if you lived in her ‘civilized’ world for one?” And Tarzan finally gets it. Honestly so many moments in that show that address so many marriage issues lol.
I came here to comment this! I love their relationship and as goofy as the TV series was, it actually did have some great moments furthering their story as a couple
I love how the show expanded the universe, like with the merchant, that brought some "civilization". So it doesn't look so crazy that Jane quit regular life to live between mosquitos and gorillas, because is more like a little colony or settlement. Adding to the dad thing. It shows that is good to have a third parties sometimes, to give perspective. And also support of the family. Imagining changing countries/life styles and your parents will refuse to visit you in Christmas or something. In real life I had meet old people moving to a country with a language they don't speak just to help their daughter/son with the grandchildren and be part of their lives.
@locabsgg94 it's the same thing, they actually stitched together a few episodes from the tv series so they could market it as The Sequel: Tarzan and Jane (or I guess they split the movie up into tv episodes so they could air alongside the rest of the series, depending on how you look at it :P)
I just wanna take a second to brag about my parents. I see them as a blueprint of a relationship and love as a whole even though if their story were to happen today, it’d be so very sketchy. 😂 My parents have been married for a while, and while they’re not touchy or all over themselves or even seemingly neglectful of each other, I can tell they’re the happiest couple ever. Every so often I’ll have a random question that pops into my head, particularly ones about love and relationships and stuff; I ask mom about them. They have their struggles sure, but they’ve never kept it to themselves. Both sides are very open to their feelings and it being expressed to the other or as much as they’re able to tell what’s wrong. One thing I asked my mom about when it comes to marriage is how to keep a marriage in a general sense. I haven’t asked my dad about it but I know he’d say the same thing. They had a conversation before they got married. They talked through what each of them wanted for the relationship. My mom explained a marriage to me as an actual contract. A promise to one another with a set of rules and regulations, some minor details in fine print (meaning unspoken agreements that may just be common sense.) Every time my mom wants to try something new, he’s right there with her, asking her what he can do. She still keeps him in her mind with things he might like or when they might have their time off together. Honestly, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen them do something just the two of them, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. It’s… the little things they do. Even if it’s just dad moving her plants into the sunroom or Mom buying him some doughnuts when he’s had a rough day. Now I know how they’ve fallen in love, I know small parts of their marriage, but I still have thousands of random questions to throw at them. A lot of times, it’s just us watching a tv show and I randomly ask if a couple on screen is worth it. I love listening and watching love stories unfold, I love shipping characters together that I think could make a healthy pair, I want to make stories (probably only fanfics) where their love stories don’t ever have to end. Major milestones just one after another, I adore all of those. With my parents as my “Steps” I can only hope that any possible love story I may dream of or run into is just as healthy, lovely, magical, and long-lasting as theirs. I love my parents so much…
My favorite Disney couple has been Thomas O’mally and Duchess for a long time. I adore how Thomas does everything he can to help Duchess and the kittens without holding back even a little bit. You can tell he really cares about Duchess due to the way he will jump in without a second thought to keep her and her family safe.
I do find it funny after she introduces her kittens, Duchess does challenge O'Malley, I forget exactly what she asks him, but she does ask if he's leaving now, and while his flirting may have been insincere, he still steps up, he just realizes the situation isn't one to be taking lightly like at the beginning
Duchess and O'Mally are my absolutely favorite Disney couple. They were so sweet, their growth is beautiful and the outcome is just picture perfect, literally 🤭❤️
As someone who adores cats, I always loved Duchess' line of "Oh no no, we mean FAR more to her than that." I would think to myself, "you're damn right."
@Xehanort10 but the money would go to the cat’s _caretaker_ AKA him! All Edgar had to do was wait and he would have gotten the fortune anyway! Duchess can’t exactly take him to court over what he spends the money on 😭💀
I can understand Edgar being pissed off though. He worked for the old woman for years but she leaves her money to her cats. Doesn't excuse him trying to kill them though.
I stand by Bernard and Miss Bianca are the best Disney couple of all time. He treats her like royalty and will go to the ends of the Earth to make her happy, and she believes in him 100% and sees him as the true hero he is.
The alley cat one reminds me a lot of my dad's first family. He also genuinely loved them, but sadly, through misunderstandings and outsourced manipulations, it didn't work out in the end. And it's been heartbreaking whenever I catch rare moments of him reminiscing what he lost. And thankfully, I never took it personally that I wasn't his _first_ kid once I learned about it at two yrs old. All I ever wished was for him to be happy.
I would say my husband and I have an 'opposite side of the tracks' relationship. In the beginning we always said I was his uptown girl and he was my downtown man 🥰It was something that we both just had to recognize early on that there were going to be parts of each others' worlds that were new to us, and we had to decide whether we would be open to and expand our world or not. It has been the greatest joy of my life being with him.
On behalf of Billy Joel: 🎵 Uptown girl She's been living in her uptown world I bet she's never had a backstreet guy I bet her momma never told her why I'm gonna try for an uptown girl She's been living in her white-bred world As long as anyone with hot blood can And now she's looking for a downtown man🎵
Mannn I really need to rewatch The Aristocats-I’ve only seen it maybe twice and I was way too little at the time to get anything. Literally, I didn’t know what an aristocrat was, I didn’t know why at first O’Malley was like 😬 seeing the kittens, I didn’t know what a scale was, let alone an arpeggio! Basically I was like « aww cute kitties » and « ooh funny colors » and « oh cool music » 😂
We just watched The Aristocats the other week with our online Classic Musicals Club and I must say, they had a GROWN folks/cats relationship arc. It was a great discussion catalyst.
I love it when cats are portrayed respectfully, well... not as villains. Aristocats is one of those rare stories where I feel cats really get done good. So often they are villified and that hurts.
My god I love this channel. You guys do such a good job of calling out actions that are red flags in relationships, but also of recognizing that it isn’t a black-and-white thing and that all relationships are different. I also really appreciate that you’re willing to talk about things like heteronormativity, racism, etc. instead of dodging around the topic or pretending it isn’t there, which is something that happens a lot in cinema analysis of various kinds. I feel like my knowledge of healthy relationships has improved massively since I started watching these, and I’m a lot more secure in what certain red flags look like and which problems can be solved. Thank you both. ❤
My husband is syrian, living in US. I am chilean. Our relationship was SO HARD, but not bc how much we loved each other, bc of external factors. Now, 10 years married❤. Yes, love isn’t enough, you have to discuss things ahead and respect who your partner is and sacrifices as long as you agree with it
My husband and I have been together almost 14 years now. We are still learning and growing. I even had a moment, the other day, where I did something INCREDIBLY stupid and I am used to the yelling/screaming from parents and his in-laws making fun of me and calling me stupid. So, when he got up and asked what happened...my natural instinct is to lie to make myself look better. I just sighed and looked at him. Then I said, "I did something so f'ing stupid that I want to lie. I want to make it seem....not as bad....but I don't want to lie to you." Then I told him what happened. All he did....was come up to me and hug me. Then he asked how he could help. Now that's love there. I am so grateful to have moments like that.
I’m surprised that there are still no comments in defense of Mulan and Shang. They said that their relationship started with a lie but the first part isn’t about romance at all. The first part of Mulan mostly fits for the “children and parents relationship” analyses. But the second part is totally about romance and there is so much to discuss and the couple would be on the top position. Nevertheless, still think that Mulan is the healthiest character among Disney’s princesses. Deeply in my childhood I used to hate Ariel 😅 She seemed for me so unreasonable and over the past so many years I am not surprised why I didn’t like this movie.
If "The Princess and the Frog" gets a live-action adaptation, Disney better put New Orleans in full-blown. I've never been there (or any part of the USA land, for that matter), but I definitely want to see it.
I wish you would have commented on how Hercules handled Meg's false advances! He's very respectful of her, she puts her leg down and he looks away and respectfully puts her leg back down, she lets her strap fall off of her shoulder and he fixes it instead of letting it stay down or pulling it down further. I dunno, it just means something to me that he was very clearly attracted to her and yet he respected her instead of objectifying her and looking when he had a chance to.
@Pablo Ruiz dude, you don't know what objectifing or predatory behaviour is. You are just searchibg for excuses to put the guy as a victim and a the girl as an abuser when the film tells otherwise.
@Kelsey Peterson To be fair, most of these girls only appeared in one episode each. But yeah, I think I can say that Hercules did have some relationships before he meets Megara in the movie.
@Kelsey Peterson Actually, he did have a few different girlfriends in the TV series. Meg was definitely more seductive in a mature way in that scene than they were though.
The first time that I watched this, I was in a good place in my relatinship and it was simply entertaining. Now for the second time, I'm in a bad place in my relationship and the things being said feels aimed directly at me. Like every second sentence is profound and something that I need to work on how I approach my relationship.
What I think is the most important thing in the relationships is: communication. Keep talking to your partner from amazing things, hard things till even silly that nobody really talks about it. You would understand your partner way more and respect each other better.
The Teen Girl Squad bit was so unexpected and perfectly applicable that I nearly spit out my drink with laughter, haha! Thanks for putting in these hilarious extras!
If you ever up to watching something longer would heartily recommend Rachel Bloom's 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'. Almost finished, but each character and relationship (non-sexual included) had plenty for therapist to unpack, since we only get commented on one person's diagnosis and the rest of 'normal people' are a rich show-not-tell with both on the surface and deeper stuff to discuss, the cast is likable, show itself surprisingly fantastic, first 2 seasons especially quickly go into a densely packed breakneck pace of dealing with things that most narratives tease us till the end
Tarzan *was* planning to go to England with Jane first. Situations changed after his gorilla-dad died, so he had to change his mind, but I think it makes her decision a little more equal in context. She knew he was willing to sacrifice everything he knew to stay with her, then he had to sacrifice his future happiness with her to help out at home, so it makes sense for her to be like "you know what, I like this guy, I think it's my turn to give something up". ((I also think that her dad immediately deciding to stay in the jungle with them takes away some of the impact of her sacrifice, since she doesn't have to give up her family any more, but she didn't know he was going to do that so it doesn't impact the scale of *her* choice))
@kalef It's been about three years since I've binged the series (thanks to a lack of availability), but I thought the treehouse was a new one built together in middle the jungle? As far as I recall, they never really leave for that clearing where his Parent's house is. Now I need to re-watch the series again.
@Lunar Siren I guess he's a gorilla-adoptive father, since he didn't gorilla-marry Kala *after* she adopted Tarzan. Or he's a gorilla-estranged parent, who Tarzan desperately wants to be a father figure. I will say, I called him a gorilla-dad to differentiate between Tarzan's human-dad, who we also see die during the movie. Tarzan is a special Disney character, we see three of his parents die during the course of the film. Quite the overachiever.
@Andrew Pierson His life’s work was studying gorillas so it isn’t that much of a stretch for him to stay with his daughter in the place he has always wanted to go around the creatures that he cares about the most and sees his daughter in love and happy with a man who connects them all.
My biggest problem with Mulan, is that I'd read translations of the Actual Myth of Mulan. And the Disney movie, although having one of the best Disney songs of all time in it, really, REALLY, down plays just how awesome Mulan is in the Myth.
I’d love you to comment on Pepa and Félix from Encanto if you ever do a part 3. I know they aren’t the main characters or the main couple but the short interactions they do have is SO healthy and romantic to me
It would be interesting seeing the progress of Mulan and shang with there relationship through the 2nd movie. I feel like there are a lot of lines that are very real that can be addressed. Like the responsibility they both had, and the stress that made it a difficult environment to nurture their relationship. It wasn't until they lost each other that they finally returned seeing they have to work harder for each other
Just to throw a couple more couples into the mix here’s some more you guys could review next time! Lady and Tramp Aurora and Phillip Anna and Kristoff Pongo and Perdita Sally and Jack Skellington Woody and Bo Peep Buzz and Jesse The incredibles Wall•E and Eve And also not sure if it counts but Roger Rabbit and Jessica would be interesting too! (My favorites are Rapunzel and Eugene and Tarzan and Jane 😊)
You guys should do The Nightmare Before Christmas for Halloween and touch on identity crisis and the sense of trying to step out of your comfort zone but finding your sense of purpose. 🖤🧡
Okay but Wall-E and Eve are another great couple for people who come from different worlds (literally lol) but they come together and learn to accept each other. Plus Wall-E is such a sweetie
My husband is silver spoon and I am of the lower class single mom area. He ended up still loving me. It was super hard and painful for the first few years. It took a lot of arguments, figuring out boundaries, learning habits. Then the day happened. We just, clicked! The willingness to bend for eachother, the willingness to let little things just slide. Man, was that amazing. Here we are now, finally not arguing once every other day. We have a spat or two, but they end so quickly. The only arguments we do have are about raising my babies. Well, our babies, because I still need to release the need to be the only one. He is so up lifting, and never puts me down. He is super amazing in all he does. He is an active father and loves all the kids dearly. He is a great man. Now for me to be willing to let him be a father more. Ever wake up, after years married, and think, "I can't believe how lucky I am" and know, this feeling you had as newlyweds never died? Man... It wasn't easy, but talking, counseling, and learning was very important. All you need is love! With love, you will want to take the steps to succeed. You have to love someone to even want to salvage a dying one, let alone one with 2 completely different points of views. (No, my relationship was not dying it was just a culture and class shock)
As someone who is probably soon going to be in a slightly similar situation money-wise (I come from a rich(ish) family but will be dirt poor when I move and marry my guy), this comment means a lot to me. I don't have many doubts and am determined to make it work. I don't need riches or a big apartment as long as the relationship and bond I have and continue to grow with him is strong and we continue to support each other as we try to walk in God's light. Care, communication, comradarie, contentment, and commitment are key. 😊
So happy Duchess and Thomas got the top spot, they are the blueprint fr. I'd love to know how you'd rank couples like Esmeralda and Phoebus, Kida and Milo, or even Lady and Tramp. If you ever wanted to do these with live action films too, I'd be super interested to see how Will and Elizabeth rank because they get 3 films worth of love story.
I'd love to see you two do a reaction to the movie "Ever After". It's my favorite retelling of the Cinderella story and just such a great movie with wonderful characters. I hope you see this comment! 😊
26:44 There was a theory online that the reason why O'Malley's name is so long is because he keeps all of the names that his "owners" (or just people that feed him) give him. He says Madame only sees her as another pet is because of his own experience with past owners. I don't remember if it was put into the movie, but during the milk cart ride she sings a song as why they need to come home: not just because they love her, but she's genuinely concerned for her ("Her troubles would disappear as long as she had us near... They're (the kittens) her only family). That's why O'Malley doesn't say anything else in the moment, because she had already explained why they needed to come home (which shows that he remembers what she said :D )
i always just loved Thomas and Duchess, because they remind me so much of my parents. i was raised by my mom and my stepdad who didn't join our family till i was 8, and he's the great dad my bio father refused to be.
Actually, Jonathan, Shang DID consider the why and that's what fueled his compassion. Watch the scene again and when Mulan mentions her father, there is absolute heartbreak in Shang's eyes since he knew the pain of worrying about his father at war all of his life but was powerless to save his life. If anything, Shang was angry, but saw her as an equal at least in motivation and truly admired that. Shang may not have been in love with her at the moment, but he respected and silently envied her sacrifice. Their bond is potentially the most powerful of any Disney couple.
Interesting fact; in the original story, Shang didn’t care that Mulan was a girl warrior, he actually admired how she sacrificed her life for her father.
I agree. I love Mulan and Shang best of all. One thing I always noticed that I think is often overlooked: Shang spared her as a WARRIOR, not as a person he loved or felt sorry for, or as a woman or out of pity or weakness. He had to make it abundantly clear to his troops as well that you can't just disregard rules because you sympathize the rule-breaker. He told Mulan he would spare her life because she saved his: he respected her contributions as a warrior and the justice of her position. It was scary when he drew his sword, but liked that too because it showed Shang knew Mulan had courage and a sense of justice too; she didn't cower away from him. She understood and appreciated the position he was in too. They were both just great. ❤
I’ve watched this movie countless times (my all time favorite) and u just enlightened me with ur wisdom. I never thought about it. She took her father’s place to save him from dying in war (and to prove to herself that she worth more than what she is credited for by society) and Shang had just lost his father to war and couldn’t save him. How didn’t I think of that!
My engagement just ended so I got about 40 sec in before I started crying lol, but I just want to thank you both for this. I love him and I realize I need to let him go so he can be happy again. He deserves that much. And so do I :) You make me believe things can be okay in the end.
Really like Tom O’Malley and Duchess, they have a charming relationship that isn’t too gushy but not dramatic. The story focuses on the adventure, and through that adventure Duchess enchants Tom while Duchess is smitten by O’Malley. The kittens are a part of the story, not like side characters we see in typical cartoon romance, but active participants. I think Tom shows up roughly 15 minutes in the film, giving Duchess and the kittens time to know the characters and see the problems they face before O’Malley shows up. So we as the audience enjoy Tom and Duchess both individually and see them blossom their relationship naturally, it’s not a forced relationship. However, with Tiana and Navine I personally would switch them with Shang and Mulan. Shang and Mulan are interesting in that Shang knew nothing about Mulan as a female till later in the film, but by then he learned to trust Mulan because he unusual methods turned into an asset. He learned to respect her, not because she was a female who potentially could be his bride, but she earned that respect in his eyes. In the meantime, even while trying to portray as a male soldier, Mulan did reach out to Shang to give him support, whether it was encouragement or when he realized he lost his father in the war. Both eventually learned to care about each other, Shang was hesitant to listen to Mulan when she was trying to warn him because she did break his trust. We was coming around to admiring her before it was revealed she was a woman the whole time. Most people validly will be upset when they feel duped. But push comes to shove, when Shang was at his wits end of saving the emperor, Mulan still came through and it likely showed Shang that Mulan is the same even though she is a woman. She gained his trust and admiration back, but in a new context, for the fact that now he knew she was still going to find ways to solve the problems of even though she was a woman. He ends up appreciating her efforts more than the woman who saved China, keep in mind he witnessed her struggle as a soldier. By the end of the movie he was fighting her honor when the annoying documenter was upset that they let a woman fight the enemy. When in the beginning and through out the story, Mulan was trying to find honor for her family, specifically her father. It’s Shang who ends up looking after fighting for Milan’s honor. Just personally see more respect from Mulan and Shang than I do with Tiana and Navine, both don’t have chemistry, but the film ends Mulan on a starting path with Shang in their romance. When we see the Princess and the Frog, sure there’s growth, but there seems to be a rushed growth when we got two characters that have little in common. Navine branches out to Tiana’s interests, but what way did Navine help her grow in character? The relationship just doesn’t show balance for personalities that seem to strain when together. Just think the story could have found a different way to help develop their characters while balancing falling in love. Just imo.
The Aristocats is one of my favorite Disney movies! Im glad to see it get the love it deserves ❤️❤️ As an adult I definitely appreciate their relationship more but I always viewed this movie as a family coming together in all sorts of ways. It was nice to hear everything put into words.
If you guys ever do another one of these, it'd be nice to see La Muerte and Xibalba from The Book of Life get ranked, even if it isn't a disney movie. I enjoyed the two love ranking videos a lot, and whatever you guys do next will be awesome regardless :)
YESSSS I’M SO GLAD THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT O’MALLEY AND DUCHESS. Aristocats was one of my favorites as a kid. I have a feeling they’re going to get a good rating because he’s all in, not just for her (even though that would be understandable, duchess is so dreamy), but for the kittens too.
and the movie must be seen in Italian where he become 'Romeo er mejo del colosseo' (Romeo, the best cat of the Colosseum) with a very thick roman accent
Idk if it’s because I have a stepdad (though I’ve never thought of him that way, he’s just my dad) but I love O’Malley. A guy who isn’t just into a woman, but also falls in love with her kids, and wants to be a father to them. That’s the most romantic shit ever. Kinda funny thinking about it. My middle name is Marie so I’ve loved this movie since I was little. I was Marie for Halloween when I was 3 or 4. Then my mom and “step”dad got married when I was 7. And his last name is even Irish too!
What I love about Hercules and Meg, is that he has orange hair and wears a red headband and she has red hair and wears an orange headband. It symbolises the fact that they complete each other 🧶🧡🍊🧣
Honestly we cannot ignore how by the end of Mulan II they reach balance and mutual understanding and respect. My husband and I resemble Li Shang and Fa Mulan in a lot of ways. But of course we don’t have that same plot development 😅 I always had a big old fat crush on Li Shang as a child. It really was as mushu said those broad shoulders (and his hair)

Would love to see you two break down Everafter.
@Brandon Stewart the spaghetti scene in lady and the tramp is the romantic of any in animation
What would have been better would have been dog's. Instead of cat's❗
What about Lady and the tramp
watching two grown men contemplate on the similarities between their wifes and their disney princess crushes is the cutest thing i have seen in a long time.
while also crushing on Tarzan 😭🙆🏽♀️🤔
And I feel like we're slowly getting to know their wives through these comparisons. Adorable
Love to see it
My favorite Disney couple is Rapunzel and Eugene.
@Katie Edwards “Please educate yourself” just let people ship them its just a movie omg. Like its not that serious.
@Random_Fanatic I literally knew the real story as a kid before I watched the movie lol. Not my fault if you’re getting mad at a literal cartoon
I always loved that movie and loved O’Malley wish I was lucky enough to have a step father that made my mother happy.
True, there are still very few positive portrayals of step-parents out there.
Lol. Not incredibly so, but they were definitely more critical of the dudes than the woman characters 🤔
but technically Jane knew both what she was getting and what she was losing.
@Ferret Queen "happily ever after"(quote)
Thanks for sharing your perspective.
But, I'd like to think it was a Cinderella happily ever after... if the real world would just stop preventing me from dreaming childish dreams.
@Mia Kiceh she still got her happily ever after, and short sighted kids will focus on that. Give me Moana any day, at least she has a brain.
@Ferret Queen "selfishness... shouldn't be reinforced"(quote)
Hmmm.
@P VP Some of that is true enough, but what is the point in overanalyzing a Disney movie like that?
This is such an interesting take because you're so right. Imagine your father bursting into your room and trashing the place. Its unacceptable in every feasible way. I wouldn't feel safe at all after seeing that violence.
@kesha iz cute and you're on a channel ehere two people discuss cartoons and movies. So? What are you doing here then?
@P VP ratio, ik, but i agree tho? that relationship had like no chemistry and it bugged me too
@P VP my god... get a job
I found it refreshing that Mulan and Shang aren't properly together by the end, but are taking it slow. They need time to know each other as themselves, and not as comrades.
I pretend there never was a Mulan II
No help from her grandma on the taking it slow part
Their relationship develops more in the second movie.
And then they made Mulan 2...
And that’s why we got Mulan 2!
Pacha's a great dad, they're such a cute couple and chicha is so helpful when they're trying to make it back to the palace before yzma. also robin hood and maid marian; one of the few relationships that had quite a bit of history and finding ways around the things that separated them
@Alice Cato Sadly, they don't apply cause they're not Disney
AND , Anastasia, anya and demitri
both is good
Pacha and Chicha are literally couple goals.
THESE BOTH OF THESE
I think Milo and Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire would be a great addition to another Disney Couples episode!
Lol that’s what I was thinking- gotta love the nerdy/ nebbish guy and protective/ strong woman dynamic !!
PLEASE. The best relationship in Disney at all (ok caveat, David and Nani). There's no immediate kiss, no romance right off the bat, he's simply there to support and appreciate her and she's there to learn from and teach him. They're friends to start and they trust and respect each other. It's fantastic!
Yes! I would love to see them in your next video, they are my favorite Disney couple ❤️
I know it is not Disney, but please do Anastasia and Dimitri in a future video. It is such a sweet relationship that builds up slowly.
THIS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REACT TO ANASTASIA AND DIMITRI 🥺🙏
@koala🐨 For person from West - yes. From person from East - nope.
@Space0fox but it's not make it less toxic in a romantic relationship
I wanted to ask for this and I am so happy this comment was so high up!
Please do! I think this made me think romantically of men when I started being tween lol :D
You guys discussing the fact that your Disney princess crushes remind you of your wives is the most wholesome thing ever 😭
@RoseOfTheNight4444 brother-in-law. I don’t think he would be legally obligated to contribute, but I mean it’s David so of course he would
@nemi i would argue that Pacha gives him a run for that title
I think the one part you guys really missed on Shang and Mulan was the motive behind Shang trying to send Mulan away after they find out she's a woman. He was supposed to kill her, the penalty for what she did was death. He very well could have been trying to send her away for her own good, and the guilt during the parade is knowing that everyone is alive because of Mulan.
I always loved O'Malley. He never tried to do nice things in order to get with Duchess. He just genuinely wanted to help her and her kittens.
Not to mention he put a suit on first to go with her. But Clayton screwed that up.
I'm... I'm pretty sure that was a joke.
@Jessit could also at least be as she's dressed as a man still she would only come IF IT WAS POSSIBLE. She knows how much danger she's in right now.
@딸기 가 좋아 That too
I'd also like to think that if the emperor got word of it, he would have executed Mulan and her family, and punished Shang for not reporting it. A woman in the military is against everything they believed in during those times
Listen to the way he said it tho. He’s not saying it in a way that seems protective. It sounds like he’s angry with her.
SHE TAUGHT HIM HOW TO MINCE WHEN NO ONE ELSE WOULD ✋😫
Well that's how a true playa' plays...
So he's a respectable playboy.
Iup, I always loves Naveen because of his personality
Yes I’ll always loved them! 😭
“Shang isn’t looking at Ping as a romantic interest because of heteronorms”
Shang: “Ping, if you were a woman I’d kiss you”
I don’t know if anyone else has suggested it but I’d love to see a video like this with Miss Bianca and Bernard from The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under ❤️
New idea for Disney couples to rank :
- Esmeralda/Phoebus - very underrated relationship to me, especially compared to how Frollo lusts for Esmeralda and Quasi falls heads over heels for her and sees her as an angel. Phoebus sees her as who she is, they fight, argue, save each other a couple of times, and they kiss in the middle of the movie, so the rest of it is actually them being in a relationship and facing challenges together.
- Beauty and the Beast just because I want to see how you guys handle the whole locked in a tower thing
- Anna and Kristoff/Hans - compare the two dynamics we see in these couples
- Not a Disney movie buuuuut sorta - Anastasia and Dmitry !
- The Encanto couple relationships - Felix and Pepa, Julieta and the dad, Dolores and Mariano...
They did a video about "Beauty & The Beast".
I love Aristocats so much. I love how even though Thomas is like "Oh shit kids???" for a second he immediately after gets this big grin on his face and starts doting on them, too. And Duchess isn't shamed for being a single mom ONCE throughout the whole movie.
Unless their kids turn out to be criminals. 😂👌
Their cats though, being a single parent is normal lol
"Finally! Someone GET'S IT!"
They've had a lot of rough patches, from Mom having to teach Dad what leftovers are to Mom almost dying, but they've been married 40 years and counting.
Her health is still poor most of the time, but modern medicine isn't a miracle machine even when you have competent doctors who *LISTEN TO THEIR PATIENTS.*
Doctors who don't has been kind of a *theme* in my life.
When there is understanding, love can last a long time! So sweet of your parents for putting that first. I hope your mom is okay now btw
@Andrea Diaz Thank you!
How on earth you haven't made a video about ATLA? No other show comes remotely close to catching my empathy. Absolutely insane character development. Focus on Appa's lost days please!!
@Peachy Panda You win this one!!
@Jesselyn Briggs there is no atla movie in ba sing se
@Donielle but am I wrong? Lol
@Jesselyn Briggs 😂😂😂
And because the movie doesn’t exist 🤫
Alan: “Do they end in a healthy place or do they end at the beginning of a healthy place?”
Me: *sweats in Greek mythology*
Okay you genuinely made me laugh out loud
Thankfully Disney ignored way more basic details of Greek Mythology, so I think within the Disney canon it’s safe to say things don’t end up like that
At least Disney wasn't true to the myths. Probably the biggest inaccuracy was Zeus being in a committed monogamous marriage and not cheating on her
@Inoli316 ahhh
@Yuri Oroku one of my favorite lines is “Unorthodox display of hubris, but very well.”
I love how they only realize Mulan is a woman when her hair is down when she literally has the same length hair as 95% of the other men in the movie.
@Baby Ramses They just thought she was a pretty guy. They're not that rare, especially in China lol
It wasn't the hair. It was the chest. The physician saw her breasts, told Shang, and he knew it was true when he saw the chest binding.
I thought it was bc they saw her chest binding 💀 and then after that it was bc she dressed feminine
I don’t know I just think they are the gold standard of the Disney princess line up
Suggestions for part 3:
Lady & Tramp (Lady And The Tramp)
Milo & Kida (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
Robin Hood & Maid Marian (Robin Hood)
Aurora & Prince Philip (Sleeping Beauty)
David & Nani (Lilo And Stitch)
Your welcome!
What I loved about Tarzan’s ending is Jane’s father not only gave her his blessing, but stayed with her. You don’t always see that in films. It is always the parent letting go versus deciding to stay.
@Celia Nunn yeah but those two sucked from the very beginning
@Mister Muffinut Probably because Lady Tremaine's name is only mentioned once in the Cinderella film, and Grimhilde's name is never mentioned in the film or any other media that has her in it. She's literally only ever called "Evil Queen."
@Mister Muffinut While I did know Lady Tremaine's name, I never heard of Queen Grimhilde before. Ive only ever heard her be referred to as "The Queen" or "Evil Queen" (or Regina) So maybe that's why
@Jennifer Gerry That would've sucked for Ariel. I'm sure she very much appreciated the distance from him considering he's a terrible parent.
@Celia Nunn Why does nobody know their names are Lady Tremaine (Cinderella) and Queen Grimhilde (Snow White)
When you gave the initial list I thought “well duchess and Thomas are clearly the most healthy couple here” he immediately is down to sacrifice it all for her kittens 🙌🏻
I always think two of the best Disney romantic couples are in the same animated movie. Roger and Anita and Pongo and Perdita!
(note: if you or your partner suffer from mental health issues, please go find a professional to handle it, don't dump it all on your partner)
this is a classic arab man like
I remember rewatching Tarzan as an adult vs child.
I adore their relationship.
When I tell you it irks me that this movie doesn't get enough praise. Honestly you ask most people why they didn't like the movie and usually the ONLY reason is because she was a frog. That's it.
Meg and Hercules being compared to Delilah and Samson is hilarious and validates my feelings of that couple exactly.
I would just call it “ the movie with the cats” and everyone would just know 😂😂😂
“Shirtless Shang covers a multitude of sins. SO MANY” I CAN’T WITH THESE TWO 😂
I think Shang is more compassionate for Mulan and the why in that moment than you give him credit for.
@Lore Goblin your comment is undervalued, it's gold and i love that detailed description of their relationship
Mulan shows up again, with new information, capable as she's ever been and unwilling to back down. she's still got people to protect, and disrupting the status quo hasn't been a wrong move for her yet. the real question is... can she convince the others to break the mold with her? she can't do this alone... they all became capable together. the confrontation in the mountain wasn't where they used what they'd learned, it's here. the real test starts then, and it mostly hinges on whether Shang can recognize and utilize the skills of one of his best soldiers.
their relationship goes far beyond romance... honestly, it probably wasn't even a romance until the last couple minutes of the movie. but the relationship that was there is really interesting, and very important for them both.
especially with the blustering pencil pusher that was going to get Shang court martialed for sparing her
I think the law part is very very important.
Thank you for making this reply so I didn't have to.
Gotta hand it to the editors for this channel. They are so hilarious and do such a great job adding to the chemistry of our KZclip Dads!
Our editors are amazing!!
there's something to be said for couples therapy at the very end; it helped me a lot when I was about to leave my ex to have that therapy with him. I was hoping that therapy might help us to communicate some difficult things with each other - tbh, I hoped it would help me to get him to see some things that he seemed unwilling to see. couples therapy helped me to see that the conversation I wanted was a non-starter.
I love that this is a fun way for people to navigate healthy and unhealthy behavior in relationships
Great video, I was in a beautiful marriage before my now ex wife left me, i still love her and most times i cant stop thinking about her, i am doing my very best to get rid of the thought of her, but i just cant, i love her so much, i don't know why i am bring this here for, i cant stop thinking about her.
@Jack Whittaker make sure it isn’t a scam
@Juande Ruano Thank you for this valuable information, i just looked her up now online, and found her website . impressive
@Jack Whittaker her name SHELLY RENEE WHITE, she is the best spiritual adviser she helped out in such a difficult situation
@Juande Ruano wow, how did you get a spiritual adviser, and how do i reach her?.
its always difficult to let go of someone you love, i was in a similar situation my wife for 12 years left me, i couldnt just let her go i did all i could to get her back, i had to seek the help of a spiritual adviser who helped me bring her back
When they said “Tarzan better build her a Swiss Family Robinson palace”, there was a TV show and they moved into his parents’ tree house.
IKR! I was thinking the same exact thing. I was like “weeeeellll if u watch Tarzan and Jane, they do have the nice tree house”
In real life I had meet old people moving to a country with a language they don't speak just to help their daughter/son with the grandchildren and be part of their lives.
you just unlocked a vivid childhood memory
@locabsgg94 it's the same thing, they actually stitched together a few episodes from the tv series so they could market it as The Sequel: Tarzan and Jane (or I guess they split the movie up into tv episodes so they could air alongside the rest of the series, depending on how you look at it :P)
I just wanna take a second to brag about my parents. I see them as a blueprint of a relationship and love as a whole even though if their story were to happen today, it’d be so very sketchy. 😂
My parents have been married for a while, and while they’re not touchy or all over themselves or even seemingly neglectful of each other, I can tell they’re the happiest couple ever.
You can tell he really cares about Duchess due to the way he will jump in without a second thought to keep her and her family safe.
the aristocats was my absolute favourite movie growing up
I do find it funny after she introduces her kittens, Duchess does challenge O'Malley, I forget exactly what she asks him, but she does ask if he's leaving now, and while his flirting may have been insincere, he still steps up, he just realizes the situation isn't one to be taking lightly like at the beginning
Duchess can’t exactly take him to court over what he spends the money on 😭💀
@Xehanort10 to be fair, this is an education issue. No one ever told him cats DON'T have nine lives.
I can understand Edgar being pissed off though. He worked for the old woman for years but she leaves her money to her cats. Doesn't excuse him trying to kill them though.
My cat is named Berlioz. Love the aristocats.
They are most definitely our fur babies
On behalf of Billy Joel:
🎵 Uptown girl
She's been living in her uptown world
I bet she's never had a backstreet guy
I bet her momma never told her why
I'm gonna try for an uptown girl
She's been living in her white-bred world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she's looking for a downtown man🎵
Mannn I really need to rewatch The Aristocats-I’ve only seen it maybe twice and I was way too little at the time to get anything.
Sorry, kitty.
Additionally, 101 Dalmatians
But everyone knows that cats are the devil. Then again, the cute cat videos all over the internet indicate otherwise
As a crazy cat person I feel that hurt deeply. Cats can be such loyal creatures.
You're so welcome! And thank you for your kind words!
@Furienna huh. That's interesting. I'll have to try to find the show and watch it sometime.
@Kelsey Peterson To be fair, most of these girls only appeared in one episode each.
But yeah, I think I can say that Hercules did have some relationships before he meets Megara in the movie.
@Furiennareally? I've never seen the series so I only have the movie to go by.
I love these two 😂😂 Two grown men talking about Disney romances 😂😂
@Lunar Siren *adopted dad
There’s a cartoon series of Tarzan as well, and Jane does live in a Swiss family like treehouse.
My biggest problem with Mulan, is that I'd read translations of the Actual Myth of Mulan. And the Disney movie, although having one of the best Disney songs of all time in it, really, REALLY, down plays just how awesome Mulan is in the Myth.
I haven't seen it...
Because, the Animated film exists.
At least it’s better than the disaster that’s the live action.
Lady and Tramp
Aurora and Phillip
Anna and Kristoff
Pongo and Perdita
Sally and Jack Skellington
Woody and Bo Peep
Buzz and Jesse
The incredibles
Wall•E and Eve
And also not sure if it counts but Roger Rabbit and Jessica would be interesting too!
@DustyStarr along with papa hector and mama imelda, obviously lol
they are so cute
@JJ's Stikbot Videos They're Disney but they definitely should be in a video!
@DustyStarr Oh and David and Nani too!! 100%
Yasss! They need to include WALL·E and eve in their ranks!

There was a theory online that the reason why O'Malley's name is so long is because he keeps all of the names that his "owners" (or just people that feed him) give him.
@Nick Chavez Great points.
Their relationship is sooo sweet amd pure, they are adorable
Idk if it’s because I have a stepdad (though I’ve never thought of him that way, he’s just my dad) but I love O’Malley. A guy who isn’t just into a woman, but also falls in love with her kids, and wants to be a father to them. That’s the most romantic shit ever.
Kinda funny thinking about it. My middle name is Marie so I’ve loved this movie since I was little. I was Marie for Halloween when I was 3 or 4. Then my mom and “step”dad got married when I was 7. And his last name is even Irish too!
@HexxiDelux Nothing wrong with furries dear, I used to be one as well, just now it's all been corrupted by the current trend and has become a joke.
I find the animal romances more romantic than the human ones lol like Bernard and Bianca.
I still laugh at Naveen casually playing off the vocal sac bit. "That's new." ͡° ︶ ͡°
What I love about Hercules and Meg, is that he has orange hair and wears a red headband and she has red hair and wears an orange headband.
