The fast is very easy brother. The Latin Rite has the easiest fast, our eastern brothers have a difficult fast not us. Remember how simple it is, all you have to do is NOT eat something to keep the fast. Focus on what you should do extra in terms of prayer and reading and don’t think about what you “can’t” have. That’s my advice, and remember: we don’t HAVE to fast. We GET to fast. It’s a gift!
We must chastise our body to bring it into submission, because "we cannot raise our spirit to God, without denying our body." ~St Thomas. A "Hardened (to God) body is not tilled up and opened like the earth, to receive the seeds of the Spirit, and produce fruit. 🍊
@Jeff Zang It is wrong to think penance has to do with all sin. It definitely has nothing to do with any church and you. When you steal something you should pay it back. It doesn't have to be 4 times the amount you stole. That is penance. If you are caught driving intoxicated then you will spend the night in jail and pay a hefty fine and maybe have your license taken away. That is penance. You are paying for your sin. Yes, they are all penance, some you do because you know it is the right thing to do and the other is forced on you by the state or government. But none of them have to do with the church. No priest has the authority to tell me how to deal with a sin I may have committed. That is between me and God. It has nothing to do with my repentance to God. My repentance is me not doing that sin again. That is between me and God. If a person was to cheat on his wife and the wife divorces him that is not penance. It is a result of your sin. If they have children the law may have him pay alimony plus child support. That is forced penance if he pays more than what the courts say he has too that is penance by him. But as I have tried many times to say, no church has any right to force penance on me. or anyone else.
@BEN CALVERT I think you should probably start to understand that the word “penance” has its roots in the word “repent.” I’ve noticed that many evangelicals have this wonderful zeal for Christ and are not afraid to say “Jesus” in normal conversation. Speaking as a Catholic, I long for all Catholics to do the same. But I also find it saddening that Evangelicals (Especially in the USA) cut themselves at the notion of sacrifice. I mean, what was the whole point of the Gospel about? Christ was a Jew who supplanted the lamb in the ancient rituals of Judaism. As Catholics, in the traditional liturgy, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, IS the unification of Jesus and His flock being present for this continuation of this ritual. In the “Reformation,” this was all eschewed because many in aristocracy sought financial autonomy from a directive that Christ, HIMSELF, established. That is what saddens me. Protestants deny HIS word and don’t experience what Jesus very adamantly what He put down. Just because the word “penance” does not appear in scripture, the Bible is dripping with examples of suffering to overcome sin. By “dying unto ourselves (I’m certain you’ve heard that before),” we put aside worldly things and purify ourselves in preparation to the desired goal of meeting Jesus. That is the goal of Lent. Didn’t John the Baptist live a penitential life before baptizing Christ? Even Saint Thomas Aquinas, the very cornerstone of how we act today (FACT) in Christendom, led a penitential life. Please don’t make the mistake of foisting Americanized English onto Christ worshipping concepts that existed LONNNG before English was even formed. Also, you picked the ABSOLUTE WRONG KZclip channel to challenge Catholics on theology. We’re here because we want to learn more and want to adhere more fervently to Christ’s Word.
@BEN CALVERT Jesus is the way, Jesus is our example, Jesus was baptized, but didn’t need to be, Jesus fasted 40 days, but didn’t need to. See the trend? Lol
@Keir Campbell Did you miss that part where Jesus did not do that as a penance. He did the 40 days so the devil could test Him. Why would Jesus do 40 days of penance when He had never done anything wrong.
There is the greater wisdom where our tradition is both shepherd and doctor of the soul. May the councels of the pastors be the first and foremost guide to our very being. In the connection to willing to virtue, the sins of the flesh ought be conquered by knowledge of the practices that set the being on the path of the higher powers of the soul.
@BEN CALVERT Mark 2:19-20 Jesus said, "Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days."
Read the scriptures and forget those traditions that go against what is taught in the Bible. Jesus never said to beat yourself if you sin. What He did say was repent of those sins. He never added any punishment of the body.
@zach smith True, but even Benedict had an Assisi prayer conference. He may have used a little Latin in his masses, but he didn’t celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass
Who is this Priest please? My friends and I listen to him Hard Out out here in Sydney, but we don't know his name, we can only refer to him as Fr 'Pretext' May God bless him!! 🙏
After falling away for many years,, I returned to the Church during Lent. I had spent the time in fasting and work and prayer. I went to a half-day Lenten retreat and listened to a Priest assure us that fasting was just another name for a diet. It was not a holy offering.
@BEN CALVERT you wanna know what happens when other people know more about scripture, understand it better and understand and know God better than you? Catholicism happens.
@Michael Ibach It is His church and not yours or those in Rome. That is the thing you have to get through your thick skull. He did not come just for the Jews, did He. No, He came for the whole world. Why would our Savior say you can only be saved if you join this church. He nor Peter never said anything like that. Peter never once said you must join the church I am the leader of. He never once said everyone must make me their Holy Father. Peter was not that stupid or selfish and neither is Jesus. This is what is wrong with the Roman Catholic church. It is selfish, arrogant, and wrong on many things. Again when your church makes Mary Holy then it is wrong. Yes, they do when they say she is immaculate. There was only one person that was ever free of sin. That is the Lord Jesus. You cannot find one verse saying she was ever born sin-free. Blessed in no form or fashion means sin-free. It means she was blest by God to have His Son. That is all it means. Reading into something that is not there is wrong and heresy. If she was born sin-free, then why didn't God have her die on the cross. Why didn't God have her fast for 40 days and be tempted by satan. Why didn't she do all of those miracles? Why didn't she turn the water into wine? She was Holy, surely she could have done those things.
@BEN CALVERT sorry Benny, Jesus Christ only has one Church, directed by the Holy Spirt and it’s the Catholic Church. What you have, is man made religion, sorry. Jesus Christ isn’t your lord and savior, you are. Btw, you don’t follow the Bible, just your own flawed interpretation of it, sorry. Also, Last time I checked, Jesus Christ is a king not a president, which makes Him a sovereign ruler and not subject to your personal preferences and opinions. Which puts Him in the realm of a dictator to any that would be foolish enough to go against His God ordained will, which is visibly taught via the Catholic Church and not your man made religion.

Btw repentance 👉 re pen t ance 👉 pen t ance 👉 pen ance 👉 penance. Lent is a yearly preparation for Passover. Who the hell do you think you are for deciding for yourself how and when you fast? Talk about man made religion. See, your man made, I choose to do what I want to do when I choose to do it, is the absolute epitome of man made religion. In Catholicism, it’s a group assignment, it makes room for encouragement, it’s something that makes the group united, yours doesn’t. Jesus cares why you do something but He also cares about obedience, you doing your own thing isn’t obedience, it’s you doing what you want, when you want, how you want and demanding Gods approval. You insisting to have your own way, is selfishness.
When are you going to worship Jesus and know that the church belongs to Him? If the reason you are doing penance is that the church says so then your penance is a waste of time. If you are doing it for Jesus and He has told you too then that's different.
@Michael Ibach Yawn, grace never means anything special in Luke 1:28. The word used was (kecharitōmenē) - 1 Occurrence Luke 1:28 V-RPM/P-NFS GRK: εἶπεν Χαῖρε κεχαριτωμένη ὁ κύριος NAS: to her, Greetings, favored one! The Lord. The Greek does not have the adjective highly anywhere in Luke 1:28. That is an addition that does not belong in this verse. It does belong to Stephen and Jesus because it is used in those verses. Jerome, messed up. I have said that 3 times now. If you were not so thick-headed you would use something besides a Catholic reference. Because it is biased and wrong in this case. No various scholars say that at all. Only Catholics say that.
@BEN CALVERT from strongs charitoō 1) to make graceful 1a) charming, lovely, agreeable 2) to peruse with grace, compass with favour 3) to honour with blessings In Luke 1:28, the word that the angel uses is kecharitomene. So it’s not literally “full of grace,” but its root word is the Greek verb “to give grace” (charitoo). The word is the past perfect tense, meaning that the action of giving grace has already occurred. It was not something that was about to happen to her but something that has already been accomplished. The word was also used as a title. The angel did not say, “Hail Mary, you are kecharitomene” but rather, “Hail kecharitomene.” Therefore the word is not simply an action but an identity. It is thus difficult to translate because it is a unique use of the word. It has been translated by various scholars as “full of grace”, “graced one,” “one who has been made graced,” “highly graced,” and “highly favored.” In the last instance the translator is using the concept that to be graced by God is to find favor with God. It would appear that any translation should use the word “grace,” because that is the root word. The very fact you want to down play the fact kecharitomene is used no where else in human history, says a lot. Seriously and it says you are trying to hide something, something important.
@BEN CALVERT no the word is, Kecharitomene Steven and Jesus are said to be full of grace, guess what, they aren’t, Kecharitomene I’m sorry, but Greek scholar Fr Mateo states, “It is correct to paraphrase kecharitomene as ‘completely, perfectly, enduringly endowed with grace’. Therefore, Mary will always be in a permanent state, ‘full of grace’.” See, you are just spouting lies, repeatedly and lies come from Satan not God. Your statement is akin to you stating Michael means just “who is” or “is like” or “like God”. That’s not how language works. You cannot just pull the root word out and ignore everything else. Unladylike and ladylike and lady all have different meanings, even though lady is the root word.
