@johnthechosen 1 Joe Rogan isn't cut out to be a comedian either. And I say that as someone who really likes the guy, as a person. Watched the podcast almost from the start in the dungy studio with poor lighting and bad video and enjoys his commenting and presenting in the UFC. He just isn't naturally funny and insightful in the way a comedian should be.
But no one would call him a hack to his face. Mark Normand called him a silver hack though. But whatever floats your boat. This is just my opinion.

Biggest thing that resonated with me in this video was how he rushed out You'd Be Surprised. He probably could have coasted for so much longer on his live shows and podcasts and kept developing as a comic had it not been for that. It really shows you the guy's hubris and unwillingness to pay his dues as the new guy on the scene.

Conceded is a past form term to describe the act of relinquishing something. Concede means to give up or give away a point after first trying to deny it. It means when someone is stubborn to a point but forced to give said point when given irrefutable evidence. Conceited is the term you were looking for, meaning vain or excessively proud of oneself.

The main reason fans turned against Brendan is simply his arrogance. He started out humble and likeable and turned into a insufferable braggart. The more successful he became the more intolerable he became. He can call it "jealousy " if he wants but people like seeing people they like succeed.

He definitely has very solid business sensibilities -- which is why he was making so much in sponsorships when in the UFC, and how he got The Fighter and the Kid to be so financially successful. Bryan would often mention how that was all Brendan. I loved their podcast and listened every week for about two years (years back). I enjoyed his Big Brown Breakdowns, and overall him diversifying his platforms & huge rise in status / wealth seemed well-earned. His personality, demeanor, and likeability did most definitely begin to change over that same time though. Like a lot of people, it seemed to have gone to his head & he began to think of himself and others differently -- and things started to unravel. The comedy career: I was already kind of checked out by the point when he was wanting to make his specials...he had already perceivably morphed into something else.

I think something people fail to mention more is that the Subreddit, originally started out as being genuine fans of the podcast. But after listening to hundreds of hours of content, they began to notice all the things Brendan did to ruin the content, such as cutting people off, always acting like an expert and dismissing others, making mean spirited jokes but would get mad when they did the same thing to him. It's the most interesting aspect of his situation, how he turned his own fans against him and would double down on being a jerk rather than accept criticism. He still talks over his guest, even tries to answer his own questions for them. He should at least accept some of the valid criticism he gets to at least be better at what he does for a living.

The amount of talent it takes to go undrafted in the NFL or reach MMA is incredible, but that was the limit, he should have recognized it and embraced what he accomplished. When you spend your life never giving up, surmounting challenge after challenge, to finally admit you've peaked is so incredibly hard. I respect the hell out of him in that regard, but whoever convinced him he was funny should have been knocked out instead.

I don't think Brendan came from a rich family. I think he genuinely came from a good place, had legitimate friends and wasn't ready for the prime time life. Some of the things that people don't talk about is how fame just gives you things for free, you go from a place where you work hard, to all of a sudden be given opportunities that you never had before. I think thats what changed him. I think people used to like him a lot before all this happened. This kind of story isn't rare.

He just comes across as fake to me. It's like everything he does is a show. It's like he says something, and from the corner of his eye, he is looking for approval. And he surrounds himself with people that will keep him successful without having talent of his own.
And when he's confronted about something he said, I feel like he's lying. It's hard to explain.

The "stand up elite" can be pretty brutal to comics who get too famous too fast. Some of it i get, but a lot of it is petty. The whole "they arnt that funny and their millions of fans are stupid for thinking so" mentality is so strange.

Which is an incredibly idiotic and fallible idiom. You arent supposed to be a one trick pony but you also arent supposed to be a jack of all trades. Theyre all just idioms that people use to put others down to make them feel better about themselves. The reality is that unless youre making 7 figures doing what youre doing, youre probably also just a jack. And at that point youre just a jack of one trade.

I feel conflicted about the whole thing. On one hand I felt bad for the guy back when Rogan put him on blast and told him that he should stop fighting. He was a good UFC fighter. Good not great, but it was still a career. And Rogan kinda crushed his dreams in front of the world.
On the other hand the way that he segued into comedy was ridiculous. He was an open mic guy at best who decided he was ready for prime time… huge misstep.
He was honestly a decent podcaster and probably should’ve just stuck with that. But add in all the other drama and how he handles the negativity and it’s just one massive cluster fuck.
His reputation has taken a hit and if you’re him idk what you do to repair it. Maybe just be genuine and up front but I don’t think he’s gonna go that route.
Side bar: it does piss me off how regular people rag on his mma career. Most of these bums have never even been punched in the face and they clown him like he sucked. He didn’t suck, he was the TUF runner up and has some impressive wins on his record.
Maybe he should get back to his roots and become more involved in the mma community again. Just my 2 cents on the whole thing

Brendan was never a good fighter... Dude had 15 pro fights and already shows signs of cte. A good fighter can make top 8 Brendan barely breaks being ranked. Joe Rogan saved him unnecessary damage. Brendan was a heavyweight and once u start fighting elite hw your life is on the line every fight. He was getting smashed by journeymen and no names. Most of his Ws came from TUF and beating scrubs when he first got signed. Idgaf Joe crushed his dreams he kept a man from being severely hurt or having some guy out there messed up cuz he killed a guy in the cage.

    • Daniel LaDue

Unfortunately, Brendan has lost a ton of good will he had built up, and overexposed himself. The fact he didn't think people could fact check his standup specials (and life) is just troubling, and he never realized an average person can see through whatever charade he attempts as an entertainer. Being annoying is one thing. To be a proven liar, cheater, and thin skinned bully is a different level of hatred that is tough to come back from. Nobody can control the court of public opinion, and his attempts only make it worse.
However, I absolutely have to agree with you. It's cheap, and pretty ignorant when people say he was a terrible fighter. I've been a fan of MMA before the modern rules even kicked in, and I've seen really terrible, and great fighters. Your assessment was pretty accurate, that he was good, just never great (and not getting better). The idea of people using that against him is pretty low, and personally, I would just stick to the facts if I want to make fun of him.

Dude, great job on this. Watched a bunch of these "most hated comics", "downfall of such and such" and they all should be taking notes from you. Injected very little if any of your own biases and didn't editorialize, just told the story and presented the facts in a entertaining matter. Seen other videos on Schaub where they mix opinions and fact too much and it works against the point and makes me feel like Schaub had a point with the trolling. Def not the case here, just told the truth and that's all you need to show that the guy has a crazy ego and has made himself very easy to hate.
