@Von Borgah You realise many people prefer silent protagonists, right? Why do you have to be so smugly dismissive. It allows me to experience the game's story first hand, if I wanted to see characters talk I would watch a film of a show.
@Von Borgah I am not a disembodied spirit who is tied to another being that talks and reacts at its own volition. Voiced protagonist have their place, but they should not be expected from games under some cliché of immersion or relatability.
Wait, you mentioned she is like this through the whole game? So, let me get this straight... the main character doesn't actually go on a radical character arc that sees her becoming a decent human being? Knowing the main character is going to be insufferable for the entire playthrough... i think ill just return this game.
Ah yes, I want to come home from working all day just to play a game with a cringey teenager who hates everything and everyone. Even though she gained mystical magic and transported to a different world, where she is all powerful. Really helps me escape from everyday life.
@1stNumberOne imagine having kids on purpose. Especially these days. they’re doomed as soon as they’re born and all it is for you is a pointless money sink.
@Vvmopz say you have NO IDEA what your talking about, with without saying it. I literally work with teens. They’re just like that. Whiny, exaggerated self importance, condescending, nothing impresses them or is a big deal, nothings serious, selfish and self centered, naive but act as if they aren’t, ungrateful…I can literally keep going. Interesting how devs tried to make a relatable teen…and she’s annoying to everyone. Either they’ve never met a teenager, or they based her off of what they see today…interesting as to which makes the most sense..
@James Gravil And? A. It wasn't just hanging around the shire laying in the dirt for everyone to see. B. Bildo LITERALLY treated it like his most precious posession. He rarely wore it but otherwise kept it very close to himself without knowing its true power or history. This is a bad example. lol
Well, it's not unheard-of in fantasy. The most powerful magical object in Middle-Earth was in the Shire for 67 years before Gandalf figured out what it was.
@Akin Nowadays, demos are basically called, "Beta testers!" You can find plenty of them on Steam and on many other gaming platforms. Half of those games aren't even fully finished games and developers expected you to pay for it, as far as I can tell. Lol.
@Johnny Cash nah man not for me, played the demo and there was a ton of stuff I didn't like about it. I'm playing through the Callisto protocol on ps5 at the mo.
@AudioPhile So tell me did you get to play more of the game yet? its very clear the game is made by feminist for feminist and lying is just being dishonest
@good vibes Did you ever read or watched anything that wasn't a cartoon or a comic book? Gameplay does indeed seem good but also floaty in terms of movement like final fantasy 15 was with attacking (where you had to hold down R2 to attack) The story already has 20 plot holes, glossed over important fact with the worst explanations ever written, the character talk so much yet manage to say absolutely nothing what so ever feels like a dyslexic thick as a brick preschoolers essay where they have to write a large number of words and they are trying to stretch each sentence. Characters and especially the main character are unlikable as hell there is no contesting that at this point. Also she doesn't make sense what so ever, she wanted to end herself and when she gets isekaid to a world where she does mean something and can make a difference all she does is complain. Finally the way the characters are written and their interaction is a main indication of the story in general, ESPECIALLY THE MAIN CHARACTERS, the story is based around their actions, reactions and interactions like WTF read a damn book
The combat and gameplay is amazing though and the stories actually good. The dialogue can definitely be cringe asf sometimes but it doesn’t make this game any less fun
This is exactly why you don't preorder games. I think I'll pass on Velma in another dimension with her magic bracelet. #EpicEnding #WomanWhoFacedEntireArmies
You are so right with Horizon, I remember each enemy robot, each had a memorable design and attack pattern. I was always excited when I found a new kind of robot
Yess. In HZD, the enemy variety encourages you to use every single weapon types and use different approach. Makes it so much more engaging. This game's spell combat should be able to do exactly that, encouraging you to switch spells to suit different enemies. But the enemies not being varied means all you do is just like pokemon, pick the element they are weakest against. No change in playstyle.
Making demo was probably their biggest mistake. I was actually hype for this game and was planning on pre ordering it until I played the demo and I thought “ehhh, it can wait”
The problem with creating a reluctant adventurer in DnD is that you still need to go on the adventure. So after a while your character just needs to join in and go. If you're constantly just like I don't want to do this I don't want to do this then no one is going to want to play with you. The same can be said for characters you are playing as
Good point. First rule of improvisation acting: don't say no, go with the flow. If you have someone improv-ing and they keep negating their scene partner, it completely ruins everything. So yeah, at a certain point, the protagonist needs to get with the picture. Examples: Val Kilmer in Willow, Han Solo in Star Wars, etc.
@Flying Toaster "Reluctant doesn't mean they choose not to adventure but rather that *they'd rather not."* See here you contradict yourself a bit. Your character motivation is that he actually rather go adventure than dealing with his wife. He could've done anything else like say divorce for example but the fact is he prefers fighting dragons and whatnot over be with his wife. He may be grumpy and whatnot and it may be similar but it's still different than a character that is forced by circumstance or plot to go adventure, like being isekaid for example.
@freakyfro99 Trashcan druckman embraced super feminist Sarkesian and the writing in tlou2 showed. But it still won game of the year becuase MUHDIVERSITY. Yeah, someone's always going to be around to point that out. Boo, hoo.
I think ACG is really good at giving critical reviews. I was never convinced by the previews of this game, it always looked off to me, but I think he does a good job of explaining the faults in a fair way. Appreciate you.
Didn't this just come from being a tech demo? I remember seeing the main character running and parkouring through location and it looked petty cool, really nice graphically. Everyone was like, this looks kinda cool and then the publishers were probably biting their nails "this needs to be a fully fleshed out game, boys, whip something up".
Thanks for the review Karak! This was definitely a game that I really had no intention of trying, all the clips and previews I saw really didn't do anything to make me curious about the protagonist, the world or even the combat. Good to know I can continue skipping this one with no regrets!
@Vinny C. You know at this point I think you are the pretentious one, there isn't much debate around the actual quality of the game as it falls short in almost anything it tries to do. This doesn't mean that you are wrong for enjoying it, at least someone gets to have fun.
Another great review. I love how you go into everything about the game and not spend the entire video saying it sucks 50 times. Other reviews I saw I couldn't get through. It was just them shouting about how it sucks with no details.
You know, this video made me think about tropes and I have a question Why did they decide that the fantasy world's, idc about the name, language is gonna be just English considering they have a protagonist with a magical item stuck to their hand that could actually translate between the languages? Like the Babelfish from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
This game looked amazing at first glance, I'm so glad I ended up at this review and saved myself a lot of money. I've lost all faith in new release titles and I'm probably never going to buy a game at launch again. It seems to me that they care too much for making money, they split the game up, sell the rest of it to you later and go cheap on everything but graphics.
Always appreciate the honesty. For me, this is one to get on a deep sale. I was quite excited for it but after all that went down with the demo, no one should be buying this at full price and some may not buy it at all which is honestly fair and justified.
Thank you so much for your reviews They save me a lot of money in deciding if I should buy a new game up front or not. My impulse game spending would have got the better of me But now i wait for your reviews 1st. Thanks!
just hit me that they could have framed this like an Alice in Wonderland type of story. girl with issues finds herself in a strange fantasy world where she grows as a person through her crazy adventures.
What lol? That's exactly what they framed it like. In the Apartment, theres literally a Alice in wonderland book you pickup? Foreshadows exactly what happens.
I think , bc Alice in Wonderland is the first isekai ever technically, but for me , i much rather prefer American McGee's Alice for a video game , much better imo. Can't wait for the third game if it will ever come out .
I really appreciate you being constructive criticism not hating on the game to fall apart you're giving them advice how they can improve their next game I love constructive criticism because it benefits
I like how in depth the reviews on this channel are so I still watch them, but after watching your review on Midnight Suns I decided to try it anyway and I actually play that game a lot now. It's something that anyone playing games probably already knows, but you can't buy or wait on games based on someone else's, opinion you have to see if the game is fun for you specifically.
Ever since we found out this game was gonna be isekai I was extremely skeptical of it. I don't know why writers are intent on creating an immediate clash between a character and the world they end up in. It works when anime makes fun of it, but when people try to do it seriously it just falls flat. You end up with a character that has to be incredulous at everything they encounter for the first act of the story and this almost never works with teen or adult characters because we expect them to be snarky, sarcastic and disbelieving which is typically unlikeable. Only place the concept works is in kids' books because when a kid character is transported to another world they can have a sense of wonder about the whole thing rather than just irritating quips and references to the real world.
Hmm not really this could have actually worked with better writing. The game just feels disconnected. Frey wants to go home but home was something she wanted to escape from. This quite easily could have been fixed by showing that her *home* wasn’t bad, and that she misses home because she misses people that are close to her while at the same time later growing closer to her new home and caring for a new family, and accepting this is her new home. The game just feels overall like an unpolished mess in almost all aspects. I don’t think the game needs to take the route it did for its dialogue and writing, but really Square Enix is known to be outlandish often detracting from the experience. I miss when they used more subtleness in their older games.
I legit thought I was going crazy; I've been confusing this game with Undecember trying to figure out why there was so much hype over a Korean cash grab mobile disaster. Makes so much more sense now. Thanks Karak
It's weird how quite a few writers cannot write strong-willed characters (regardless of their gender). They always turn them into cynical or contrarian people. Strong-willed doesn't mean bulldozer, it means a person who doesn't easily waver. We see it here as well. Frey is tough and strong-willed, or I assume that is what they wanted. Instead, she's snarky, edgy and contrarian. It's like a pubescent notion of what it means to be strong. We see a similarly pubescent take on humour in the game: endless quips in the style of Joss Whedon (Edit: in Marvel, not Firefly etc.).
Strong willed females hard to write in our society because our nihilism makes caring about things hard. Strong wills are connected to strong ideas, principles, themes, family. The writers are nihilistic moderns and so have nothing that matters on a deep level. The things they care about are philosophically shallow. Strong willed women care about family, society, or something. A strong willed woman that cares about only themselves is weak willed so the writing is false.
I played the demo. There is def alot of potential for a great game. But this vid was totally right. It never really knows what it wants to be. I had fun but i also got bored really quick. And the demo even gives you alot more spells of the jump to play around with.
If they say that the game is targeted for a "modern audience" then that is the first red flag... The tale of the reluctant hero works because the the audience knows that the hero isn't a good person because of that reluctance, until they choose to break from it. Forspoken's story feels like it's trying to make it seem like that reluctance is what makes the character a hero...
Ironically, the actress who plays Frey, Ella Balinska, also plays the future protagonist in the recent Resident Evil reboot. Both characters have this whiny "I don't want to be here" attitude about them that make them unlikeable and hard to relate to. I hope the writers aren't typecasting her into these roles because it can't be good for her career.
@fredguy2 you unlike distorted noise have a good point but alas, pointing blame is pointless because everyone thinks they have the answer.. reality is so few do. Also it’s generally young female characters that get this treatment. Perhaps that’s just how some see them
@Conan charles Well, woke agendas has been around for decades, if not centuries, well before it overy populated the internet scenes. It's nothing new. The only difference is you just see and hear it more often. All thanks to the internet, more digital social media outlet and being more connected globally as ever. Lol.
@Dylan Scott I think it is primarily because it isn't that her acting is bad so much as the material she is given. I mean, on paper, all her recent roles are things that should've worked but failed primarily due to bad writing/plot. Resident Evil in particular had her as someone who was supposed to be extremely smart making non-stop stupid decisions that always led to tragedy. Nothing her character did actually made any sense because it ran entirely on standard horror movie tropes. Every choice her character made would get someone killed because the writers ran with the idea (and it's actually said in the show, though I don't remember the exact quote) "Weskers bring nothing but trouble" . Which leads to an entire season of this lady doing nothing but getting other people killed to the point that her daughter (who is also implied to be super-smart) does the same thing by not listening to the instructions her mother gives her. The Charlie's Angel's remake was just mediocre on every level and again, it wasn't because of the acting. With Forspoken, she's even more scripted and that kind of dialogue is the same kind of thing game writers seem to think when they try to appeal to 'modern youth'. I mean, the DmC remake did the same kind of dialogue and that game had developer interviews bragging about how their writing was top tier from award winners prior to release.
Basically all work is good for an actor's career, because people in general fully understand that actors don't choose their lines and will repeatedly forgive this problem for them.
This seems like the kind of game where the focal point of development was the combat and they had little idea what to do with the world, story and characters, so they picked some popular game and RPG traits from a hat and went with them. Forspoken would have worked a lot better as a more linear style action game, I think.
Some developers need to understand that a crappy game can't be hidden behind great graphics. I get so disappointed when I see this. All that work that the artists and animators did, only to be completely wasted by poor story and game design. I can't believe they're charging $70 for this lol
I played the demo and stopped after 5 minutes because the game looked and felt terrible. Then recently I watched a video about the game and thought it does actually look quite good.
I agree with your point of modern language in a fantasy setting. It always ruins the immersion for me. Legendary fantasy author Ursula Le Guin wrote about it in a great essay.
From the gameplay it does look really cool, especially the magic attacks and the world itself. It's just to bad it apparently is kinda garbage. This is the kind of look I would want for a game idea I came up with recently based on a popular IP that has been underutilized for a LONG time. Unfortunately instead of making great games they are just using a bunch of people to make these huge amazing looking worlds and having bad characters, boring cut scenes you have to wait through etc. Luckily I didn't have this game on my radar at all so I wasn't let down at all. To many games the past 2 years have been to much of a let down though which stinks. It's getting to the point of wondering why I should waste time even looking at video game trailers or anything with video games when so many are just disappointments, even from some somewhat trusted video game developers.
This could probably work if they make the annoying protagonist a twist villain. Not that it'd be that surprising, but we always see protags like this one supposedly made this way to be "likeable", and they really aren't. Might as well take the extra step and make them evil.
I knew exactly how this story was gonna turn out based on the first trailer. They made a trailer of someone given super-powers and transported to a fantastical world only complaining about it.
@The Algerian That's for people reading and reading a lot. Reading literature and fantasy. But for people that prefer light reading, something like comic books or manga. Or even just watching animated stuff it is still one of the most popular things out there. Like absolutely in top 5. Even Harry Potter, despite being not completely thrown into new world still have same trope and same idea. And as it has shown if it is done right - it is absolutely amazing. It is not a trope itself that is bad, it is people that cant use it properly that are lazy and incompetent. This entire neo feminism and wokeness thing push grand delusions into everything does highlight even more that competency can not be replaced just because people wish it so. No matter how great the idea is execution has to be better or it would fail.
This game just makes me think I should go buy magicka for the 43rd time. Fun, funny, challenging, and when you're done, there's a BSOD spell so you can quit in style
In a year this will be on sale for $12.99 on a PSN sale. That's a pretty good price to enjoy the gameplay and not feel like you overspent for a weak story and bad voice acting. I've got plenty to play right now, anyway!
So glad that you brought up my major gripe about the game 2 minutes into the video; I hated how the main character hated everything; there was a point in the demo where I was actually amazed at something I saw, and at the same time the main character said something like "Ewwww what IS that?" and I was just like eughhhhh
@Alexander Vladimir maybe the answer is for dev teams to hire actual BIPOC writers. Something tells me they’d be better at writing BIPOC characters. Imagine how much better the writing for Frey would likely be if the team was made up of Black women writers. Till real real representation happens in the dev team, we’ll keep getting the same stereotypical, poorly written crap.
This was something I had considered making content on myself. After your review I think I'll let it cook long enough for the modding community to get ahold of it & polish things. Really appreciate your honest review!
I kinda had a feeling this game was gonna be bad. I also feel like you confirmed my fear that they would add a lot of work factor to it which just turns me completely off to a game thanks for saving me some money
I'm really amazed at how many people still kept out hope for this game. And still a lot for similar types of games. I feel that most people are not in denial and think like me that most games nowadays SUCK! Graphics be damned! We want good gameplay and good stories.
Thing is though, this bratty, brash, rude attitude rarely if ever comes from someone "economically crippled" like this game portrayed her to be. Most of the people I have met who are economically "less fortunate" are humble, soft spoken, doesn't try to swear at every moment's notice. Like seriously, they're not whatever these writers concoct them to be, the writers who "assumes" all "economically crippled" people act like this should at least meet some of them..
I'm honestly thinking about selling my consoles and just buying a guitar at this point. Game action rpgs seem to be the same game I was playing 5 years ago over and over, reskinned with a rushed mechanics twist to get that puppy out the door. Starting to wonder if game design is just that dead or maybe im finally outgrowing this whole gaming thing after starting out on my Texas Instrument's Ti-99 4/a
I feel like this game has good bones at least. I could see a sequel being really fun. There's definitely some interesting concepts, it just doesn't come together in the end for me
@HorkBork M she said this in a Twitter post in 2021 lol, but regardless whether she wrote or not the story still seems to be painfully average same with the characters oh well.
@THA ULTIMA That sounds like an excuse. She's literally credited as a writer and everything she's worked on since leaving naughty dog has been terrible and cancelled.
I tend to like games more than most reviewers so I don't pay much attention to reviews, but judging by the gameplay videos I don't really see anything that justifies the crazy high specs. I still find ACG reviews valuable because of the detail he goes into. Forespoken looks great to be sure, but it doesn't look any better than RDR2 which had far lower low-end and mid-range specs.
The problem with single person rpg is the character has to be likeable or go through some sort of journey or self discovery or growth without that you end up hating the character and then the game. I tried to play the demo but hated the controls so much it put me off the game completely. Thank you for saving me money lol
This was the first game I got hyped about and a little over an hour in I was in the room with my girlfriend playing hide the panties. Not often with a new HYPED game, if ever, have I called out to my girl to ditch a new game and play rub the bean with her. Game rating for me 4/10
In order to have all these upgrades and details of what you are needing and requiring foe the game. You need to start from the grou7nd up, inside out by hooking up with a company who can teach you and what you need in order to buy for the requirements that can support the system with what you have and take you up, out and into to the next level of infrastructures in the programming system. I remember my now late brother, when he was younger and how he taught me about programming systems and how his friend over the phone was unable to help him. It's very simple!
I thought I was the only one who was going to make that Infamous Second Son comparison. Frey really does move like that, that sort of semi-automated feet shuffling because they don't want the player to move the character without some sort of in-between.
As others said was pretty thankful for the demo as that at pretty much wiped out most my interest for the game, and this just confirmed my suspicions - great work as always good sir
@Daniel Booke I am talking about Steam here as a PC player. And there is no moderation to the refund policy. If you haven't played more than 2 hours, you can refund it. Epic Games Store also lets you do that. If the PS Store does not allow for refunds on pre-orders, that's just malpractice and I don't care for it. So, again, if you know refunding is a viable option on the platform you play, it obviously is NOT a problem to pre-order. You'd have to be seriously brain dead to buy something untested if you know it cannot be refunded.
@Rushav Kumar Panda You cannot refund a physical game once it has been opened. In some cases you can exchange it for the same title if it is defective. Digitally, PS Store will allow a "one time" refund if you have not downloaded it, although their policy states there are no refunds for preorders. Nintendo eshop does not allow refunds. Microsoft will generally work with you, but even their refund "policy" has limits. I know that Steam has a more generous refund policy, allowing you to download and play up to 2 hours, but again, in moderation. Might be different in other countries, but here in the United States, I'm pretty sure that's how things work. So, no, refunding is not a viable option. Regardless, you should NEVER give someone money for something without getting something in return, feel like that is just common sense honestly.
@LTNetjak Hogwarts Legacy already has issues, there's been delays and now a staggered release schedule across platforms and generations? Trust me when I say this, something is afoot on this one too, I would recommend not preordering and waiting for a day one review. Which is what you should be doing anyway.
Just like most game presentations it "looked" really good but as soon as I started playing the demo I got that Sinking feeling of being disappointed but I tried to ignore it and I gave the demo about 2 hours of my time which was honestly to much because it just felt so bland and generic and after 2 hours or so of trying to enjoy this game I uninstalled it, for demo it was terrible so I can only guess that the game isn't much better
This guy does some of the best reviews on games, glad your actually honest about everything. I mean if I spent 70 on this I'd probably try to pretend it's good too
I couldn't even make it through the audio clips at the end of your video - kudos to you for spending as much time with the game as you did. We appreciate your sacrifice. =)
OK so her life sucks, and she's broke and then gets sent to a magical world and has magical powers.. And she wants to go home why??????? Who wrote this?
It'd be one thing if Frey had a good life in NY like great job, loving parents, supporting friends and everything, to be frustrated with the world of Athia and wanting to go back but it seems like she's acting like a D-Bag just to be a D-Bag
@ShadowErus he definitely gets better as the game progresses and he starts to feel close to the people around him. He is definitely one of my more favorite FF Characters.... Better than Lightning
Everything I see so far feels like a tech demo. And I thought at some point, they would gradually show more as works got finished, but they never did. It still looks like tech demo.
Even with the demo I kept asking myself "Okay what's next? When does this get good?" And then it just stayed...meh. The abilities are cool, but they'll get boring after hour 2. It just seems like you'll be seeing everything in a very short amount of time. Graphics are ok, was expecting more from UE5. I think Callisto Protocol looks a bit better. But it's also not open world, so I'll give it to Forspoken on this. Would love to see the PC version! Cranked graphics at 1440P 165hz sounds like a good time. Maybe the delay on input will be fixed with that?
Tbh the modern Marvel-esque writing is the least of the problems with Fray’s dialogue, the real issue for me is how consistently mean-spirited she is, her personality is like industrial-grade sandpaper.
@Alex Walker I actually was hoping this turned out better being it's a new IP. Once I played the demo though I knew it wasn't for me and was disappointed as well.
Just the small sample of gameplay he provided at the end told me that the writing would have grated on me REAL quick. I would have been able to appreciate the game otherwise going by the rest of his review, though. It's a real shame, I wanted this game to be good.
I saw 70 bucks for pc and I"m just nope. But after watching your review, it just confirms my decision for a whole bunch of other reasons lol. Thanks man.
I really wanted this to be good. I played the demo almost immediately. This game has the worst implementation of haptics and adaptive triggers. Will probably only play this when it comes to PLUS. Hopefully they resolve the issues by then.
✝️ LORD JESUS DIED & ROSE AGAIN TO PAY THE DEBT OF UR SIN! ✅By Faith in the sacrifice God has made are we saved from the penalty of sin! 🔵Turn from your sin that leads to death & accept His Gift that leads to eternal Life! 💜We are all sinners that need God. The demo felt somewhere between Nier Replicant and Infamous Second Son to me, both of which I really liked. But knowing the game is so huge with so much to do and no good story to carry me through is daunting. I had to give up on AC Valhalla because or the insane amount of content so I'm not sure I should even try this.
The combat looks really clean. But of course, combat is only as much fun as the opponent allows it to be, if the enemies are bland thats pretty unfortunate.
Hahah - your intro captured what I’ve had in my head when looking at ALL the reviews so far ie Infamous second son did everything that folks are complaining about 😂
The Problem with Video games these day’s is they want $74.00 for games because they say the graphic’s are better, but the game play nor the graphic’s measure up to the price, most games released lately are still in the $49.99 to $59.99 range and nobody can still tell me why a digital copy of a game still cost the same price as the boxed copy of a game, when the boxed copy cost more to ship and advertise, the digital copy should have stayed at $59.99.
@Walamonga1313 Retailers. There is literally no data on this, but anecdotally, no one buys game consoles directly from the manufacturer. The profit margin on consoles is low for manufacturers and sellers (5%ish). They make money on game and accessory sales. If you start selling their main way of making money for less, they won't stock your console. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo NEED retailers and can't afford to slight them by making digital cheaper.
actually considering games cost about 5 times as much to make nowadays the fact that prices remain even similar to what they were 5 or ten years ago is actually not a bad deal, plus most games go to that price a month or two after release.
The reason for the price increase is inflation, mate. Game prices haven't kept up with inflation. If they had, games would cost $130 today as that's how much $60 in the 90s would be today. However, until now market expansion outpaced inflation which allowed publishers to maintain the $60 price. But the premium game market is stagnating. There's nowhere to grow into, so the options are either more expensive games or more monetization in the same $60 games. There's the 3rd option - aggressive expansion into new markets, but there aren't many left. And eventually you'll run out of markets to expand into, so they are going to have to increase game costs anyway. Day1 culture is pretty awful for gaming. If a game is great, it'll still be great 5 years on. Only buy games for prices that feel fair.
"If you buy a game at launch, you are paying the most amount of money for the worst version of a game." -TotalBiscuit
Imagine complaining about $60
@Regal Giant Total Biscuit, you're missing out.
Well said.
Miss him. TB is a legend.
Y'all are obviously getting bad games, there are plenty of games that are fantastic and complete at launch.
This game makes you appreciate silent protagonists more.
@Zarrg yeah some people. But not the most people.
@Von Borgah You realise many people prefer silent protagonists, right? Why do you have to be so smugly dismissive. It allows me to experience the game's story first hand, if I wanted to see characters talk I would watch a film of a show.
@Zarrg You are also not the character itself you are just controlling it. Its a mear avatar after all. And in some sad cases a silent avatar.
@Von Borgah I am not a disembodied spirit who is tied to another being that talks and reacts at its own volition. Voiced protagonist have their place, but they should not be expected from games under some cliché of immersion or relatability.
@Kurosan007 youre one of a kind
The greatest battle in Forspoken seems to be the one between the blur and sharpness filters.
The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition (PC) has better graphics and facial animation than Forspoken. Try and prove me wrong.
👌
That's just Jotaro and DIO fighting around the protagonist.
Sorry but for a lot of us the greatest battle is to get it to load. It will load almost to the menu then exit out to desktop
Should just call it Motion Blur: The Game. With Particle Effects day one DLC.
Wait, you mentioned she is like this through the whole game?
So, let me get this straight... the main character doesn't actually go on a radical character arc that sees her becoming a decent human being?
Knowing the main character is going to be insufferable for the entire playthrough... i think ill just return this game.
@Ketupat Sayur New Yorkers are a cut above all,..she might play a New Yorker but she definitely isn't one...Morte Prima Di Disonore
@ViolinChick5 Never forget that "feminist" men are a thing too.
@ViolinChick5 lol if masculism was a social movement, I would call you sexist rn

@1stNumberOne day you don’t have kids or real life experience without saying it
Yeah, if only she had this strong family bond, or wasn't in trouble with the law, you could argue for her to want to go back.
@Soge 01 So true. Oh you've been given Superman powers? What an inconvenience!
That suuuuper rare one of a kind item being found 5 feet from a group of people is absolutely hilarious
@James Gravil And? A. It wasn't just hanging around the shire laying in the dirt for everyone to see. B. Bildo LITERALLY treated it like his most precious posession. He rarely wore it but otherwise kept it very close to himself without knowing its true power or history. This is a bad example. lol
@James Gravil Yeah, but the Shire also comes with a background of simple people who don't like changes in their daily lives.
Well, it's not unheard-of in fantasy. The most powerful magical object in Middle-Earth was in the Shire for 67 years before Gandalf figured out what it was.
That demo saved a lot of people $70.
@Akin
Nowadays, demos are basically called, "Beta testers!" You can find plenty of them on Steam and on many other gaming platforms.
The Demo made me buy it..... 🤷♂️
So glad you included that dialogue at the end. Full on “never touch” for me
@Louis DellaLucca That line is so believable for a teen from New York. It's like you guys are TRYING to be mad, lol.
@Varco Lord I read all the time and again I never said the story was amazing. The gameplay is just so amazing that I love the game.
@good vibes Did you ever read or watched anything that wasn't a cartoon or a comic book?
Gameplay does indeed seem good but also floaty in terms of movement like final fantasy 15 was with attacking (where you had to hold down R2 to attack)
The story already has 20 plot holes, glossed over important fact with the worst explanations ever written, the character talk so much yet manage to say absolutely nothing what so ever feels like a dyslexic thick as a brick preschoolers essay where they have to write a large number of words and they are trying to stretch each sentence.
@power panther Exactly, that kind of trash writing finally convinced me to switch to books
ACG... one of the few content creators that I consider absolutely essential! As always, thank you Karak!
@younggun lmao
@KanibusxGod didn't realize everyone would get so butthurt about that comment lol
@younggun yeah okay
@younggun lol
This is exactly why you don't preorder games. I think I'll pass on Velma in another dimension with her magic bracelet.
#EpicEnding #WomanWhoFacedEntireArmies
Why have I not seen it before? KiamKweli, you have give me words for the Frey I've been looking for! Thank you.
Exactly
So glad they released a demo for this game. Was enough for me to not get further invested, wish everyone still did demos.
Making demo was probably their biggest mistake. I was actually hype for this game and was planning on pre ordering it until I played the demo and I thought “ehhh, it can wait”
@ECHOxLegend That is also true, but my point still stands. Demos also can show how much a crap of a game can be too.
This is why most games don't do demo anymore 😂. They don't want people to know their game sucks before it launches fully.
Played the demo for like 45 min. And was like
Nope 😂
The problem with creating a reluctant adventurer in DnD is that you still need to go on the adventure. So after a while your character just needs to join in and go. If you're constantly just like I don't want to do this I don't want to do this then no one is going to want to play with you. The same can be said for characters you are playing as
@Flying Toaster Why do I feel like that's more relatable than it should be💀
@Flying Toaster "Reluctant doesn't mean they choose not to adventure but rather that *they'd rather not."*
See here you contradict yourself a bit.
@Alistair no you dont since this isnt UE5. LOL
@KnightGamer724 The same base engine also powers Final Fantasy XV.
That demo you mentioned looked gorgeous too.
What a shame.
@Alistair This isn't from Unreal 5. This is from Luminous Studios. If you want to know what the seed was, Agni's Philosophy is the original tech demo.
@ViolinChick5 yup, just slap some shitty writing and boring quests on to it and call it a game.
This would explain…everything, really.
7:55 When Jeremy forgets the game’s name, you know it’s rough.
Actually i think Forsaken is the perfect name for this game. Jeremy already improved the game without intending to.
Thanks for the review Karak! This was definitely a game that I really had no intention of trying, all the clips and previews I saw really didn't do anything to make me curious about the protagonist, the world or even the combat. Good to know I can continue skipping this one with no regrets!
I love it when ACG rips into a game like this. Like a train wreck I can't look away from haha. Great review!
@Vinny C. You know at this point I think you are the pretentious one, there isn't much debate around the actual quality of the game as it falls short in almost anything it tries to do.
This doesn't mean that you are wrong for enjoying it, at least someone gets to have fun.
This review literally got me to BUY the game. Having a blast, people have become way to pretentious.
This had the best kind of demo there is, the kind that makes you realise you shouldn't waste your money.
God bless the folks on the dev team who pushed for that demo to exist!
I downloaded the demo and it crashed every time I clicked "new game" or "settings" lmao. Immediately uninstalled, will never play this game.
Seriously. I lasted about 3 minutes and it was a nope from me.
@Thewarsofhalo Hope it was worth it
Another great review. I love how you go into everything about the game and not spend the entire video saying it sucks 50 times. Other reviews I saw I couldn't get through. It was just them shouting about how it sucks with no details.
@SOUL KILL3R 87 bro liked his own comment
@Lewis Pooper Makes no sense.
Cope
You know, this video made me think about tropes and I have a question
Why did they decide that the fantasy world's, idc about the name, language is gonna be just English considering they have a protagonist with a magical item stuck to their hand that could actually translate between the languages?
All opinions are honest. When an opinion is influenced by money, etc it becomes no longer an opinion.
Oh damn. Alice in Wonderland is an Isekai isn’t it
@Robert Allaire oh no you upset the normies here, or should i say snowflake normies? They seem to be obsessed with that word for some reason 😂.
She's a strong, young woman who can parkour AND cast magic at the same time. What growth does she need??? /s
Karak is great but the only opinion one can trust is your own.
Why the hell do I want to play as a New York teenager with questionable upbringing in a fantasy game?
hey im walking here!
@SammEater Life is Strange: Forspoken. That's a good one!
@T. Valentine no they haven't.
@mydogeatspuke sex and gender have been split for decades, what are you talking about?
Awesome review and I knew it just was going to end up being a expensive demo.
I played the demo. There is def alot of potential for a great game. But this vid was totally right. It never really knows what it wants to be. I had fun but i also got bored really quick. And the demo even gives you alot more spells of the jump to play around with.
What a bummer. Was holding out hope this would be a keeper. Thank you as always for your honesty and integrity, Karak.
My pleasure!
Sadly this became one of those games where the more we learn the less we like.
Han Solo for example of a good reluctant hero
@sundjata suma literally what i thought lol
Basically all work is good for an actor's career, because people in general fully understand that actors don't choose their lines and will repeatedly forgive this problem for them.
Always the best and honest take on games, thanks ACG!
Its a shame that this game has so many flaws because it really looks fun. Thanks for the review as always!
It absolutely is fun. His biggest critique of the gameplay is that the starting spells aren’t fun. Well you get spells after the starting spells.
This seems like the kind of game where the focal point of development was the combat and they had little idea what to do with the world, story and characters, so they picked some popular game and RPG traits from a hat and went with them. Forspoken would have worked a lot better as a more linear style action game, I think.
I love your videos and the details you point out. Thanks for always being so thorough and helpful.
I've never appreciated a demo more.
Some developers need to understand that a crappy game can't be hidden behind great graphics. I get so disappointed when I see this. All that work that the artists and animators did, only to be completely wasted by poor story and game design. I can't believe they're charging $70 for this lol
Or behind a female black protagonist
great graphics with basic skybox.png and lightning... feels like level design in this game is so all over the places. and not worth $80 at all.
I played the demo and stopped after 5 minutes because the game looked and felt terrible. Then recently I watched a video about the game and thought it does actually look quite good.
Last gen games had better graphics
Graphics are bad
I agree with your point of modern language in a fantasy setting. It always ruins the immersion for me. Legendary fantasy author Ursula Le Guin wrote about it in a great essay.
I appreciate the honest review. Keep up the good work ACG.
I loved the premise of the game, and the world looks cool too, too bad it got so many bad reviews.
They focused more on the WHAMENZ AND PERSONZ OF COLORZ checking boxes than actual gameplay. Shocking development.
@Experience_Point Shonen is an umbrella term for any manga/anime with audience focus of young males. Most of isakai is shonen.
Nien incorrect one trailer does nothing, good hunch maybe
@Experience_Point Shounen isn't a genre. Shounen is a demographic.
Been with you a long time. You never disappoint. You are the one and only source I trust. Thanks!
"You are the one and only source I trust." - that's a very dangerous mindset to have ;-)
ACG is good but watch some more to have a full picture.
Like I love how the game portrays the main character as a victim and poor but she had a bag full of stolen money and Jorden collection
@Elvin Macospag how much percent? I'm gonna wait till at least 60% or when it's on plus extra lol
@Elvin Macospag ... For $12.99?
In a year? Try a month. It's already on sale.
@HUYI1 Same. It's sad, almost, lol. I've got more than 30 games waiting in the wings. Damn holiday sales! 😅😅🤪🤪
My backlog is monsterous 😂😂 plenty to go round 👍
I’ve had fun with it so far but I still agree with this review. Solid work👍🏾
So glad that you brought up my major gripe about the game 2 minutes into the video; I hated how the main character hated everything; there was a point in the demo where I was actually amazed at something I saw, and at the same time the main character said something like "Ewwww what IS that?" and I was just like eughhhhh
@ViolinChick5 or we could just hire the best person for the job regardless of color. Not someone who is woke and wants to virtue signal.
@Alexander Vladimir **cough** Velma **cough**
@Max V, so the character doesn't at all change and progress over the course of the game? You played that much of it?
This was something I had considered making content on myself. After your review I think I'll let it cook long enough for the modding community to get ahold of it & polish things. Really appreciate your honest review!
Reminds me of one of my favorites, the longest journey/ dreamfall chapters. I'd love to see those remade.
That would be cool! Dreamfall is one of my favorite games
"We want good gameplay and good stories." - search for some indie gems ;-)
2:48 that’s where all their money and passion went…
Thing is though, this bratty, brash, rude attitude rarely if ever comes from someone "economically crippled" like this game portrayed her to be. Most of the people I have met who are economically "less fortunate" are humble, soft spoken, doesn't try to swear at every moment's notice. Like seriously, they're not whatever these writers concoct them to be, the writers who "assumes" all "economically crippled" people act like this should at least meet some of them..
She sounds like a millenial in college discussing politics in class.
I'm honestly thinking about selling my consoles and just buying a guitar at this point. Game action rpgs seem to be the same game I was playing 5 years ago over and over, reskinned with a rushed mechanics twist to get that puppy out the door. Starting to wonder if game design is just that dead or maybe im finally outgrowing this whole gaming thing after starting out on my Texas Instrument's Ti-99 4/a
There is no way in hell that character has ever watched the Holy Grail in order to reference the "riddles three" quote.
I really wanted this game to be good, and I do actually plan on playing it eventually when I can get it for little to no money.
I feel like this game has good bones at least. I could see a sequel being really fun. There's definitely some interesting concepts, it just doesn't come together in the end for me
And it gonna need to be a very deep sale, bc that €80 price tag on steam is laughable.
Thanks for this review. This is roughly what I expected. I'm glad I picked up on this game looking bad early on. The demo really solidified it for me.
@smathews731 yea but Amy said she was only a creative consultant for the game in 2019 so whatever input she had went out the window when she left.
I thought the very first trailer for this game looked alright, right up until the protag opened her mouth lol
@Crepitus What?? The same Amy that worked on the first 3 uncharted games?
@Daniel Booke Idk why people keep saying don't preorder. You can refund pretty easily, you know?
@Daniel Booke It's been a decade or so since I've pre-ordered anything. The days when physical media could sell out on you are long past.
I mean if I spent 70 on this I'd probably try to pretend it's good too
I was genuinely excited for this game
I couldn't even make it through the audio clips at the end of your video - kudos to you for spending as much time with the game as you did. We appreciate your sacrifice. =)
OK so her life sucks, and she's broke and then gets sent to a magical world and has magical powers.. And she wants to go home why??????? Who wrote this?
It'd be one thing if Frey had a good life in NY like great job, loving parents, supporting friends and everything, to be frustrated with the world of Athia and wanting to go back but it seems like she's acting like a D-Bag just to be a D-Bag
@Audio Krak new yorkers be like "hey im walking here!". thats her during the whole game.
@Audio Krak Thing is no one relates to this trash character. So clearly they didn’t do it well
@ShadowErus he definitely gets better as the game progresses and he starts to feel close to the people around him. He is definitely one of my more favorite FF Characters.... Better than Lightning
@ShadowErus Yeah Tidus was one of the best FF protags and they completely dropped the ball with this Isakai
That's not entirely out of place for NY to be perfectly honest. Doesn't make it any more tolerable though.
Maybe the delay on input will be fixed with that?
thanks karak as always for the honest reviews!
"Brand is me sponsors me" fantastic!! Keep up the honest reviews!!
Tbh the modern Marvel-esque writing is the least of the problems with Fray’s dialogue, the real issue for me is how consistently mean-spirited she is, her personality is like industrial-grade sandpaper.
ACG telling us what we all worried about. Appreciate the honest review man. Stellar work as always.
Thanks man.
Great review man, I was really hoping they would turn this one around, but it doesn’t look like that was the case.
it’s crazy how ubisoft gets away with making basically the same game and rereleasing it under a different ip
I always play on the easiest settings, so i lowered damaged takend and increase damage output. So resistance didn't matter for me. So it makes it fun
I really wanted this to be good. I played the demo almost immediately. This game has the worst implementation of haptics and adaptive triggers. Will probably only play this when it comes to PLUS. Hopefully they resolve the issues by then.
Oh no, who could have foreseen this outcome?! This was truly unexpected, we really did not see this coming no not at all. Truly caught us by surprise.
You’d be surprised how bad some people’s sense of judgment is
✝️ LORD JESUS DIED & ROSE AGAIN TO PAY THE DEBT OF UR SIN!
✅By Faith in the sacrifice God has made are we saved from the penalty of sin!
🔵Turn from your sin that leads to death & accept His Gift that leads to eternal Life!
💜We are all sinners that need God. No one can say they are perfect to be able to pay their debt of sin. This is why only God could pay the penalty for us, that is merciful Love!
Right lmao ? This game was predictably awful, from the very first time I saw the trailer I knew it would be bad.
Thanks time travelling reviewer for bringing that computer from 2053 to show us what the gameplay looks like!
Hahah - your intro captured what I’ve had in my head when looking at ALL the reviews so far ie Infamous second son did everything that folks are complaining about 😂
I’m gonna wait for a deep deep sale indeed. There are still elements that look fun, for a right price haha
@Pop Gligor Explain why digital costs the same as physical though
They want more money yet too often these games aren't done.
actually considering games cost about 5 times as much to make nowadays the fact that prices remain even similar to what they were 5 or ten years ago is actually not a bad deal, plus most games go to that price a month or two after release.
There’s a lot of good things here and it sad that it’s in a game like this. I hope these ideas and mechanics are done in a better game.
Someone said this... The writers were watching She Hulk and said this is what we want our game to be... I agree with that statement.
The writer actually created and wrote the uncharted games so take that as you will
Thanks for the amazing review as always
