Speaking of My Tears Ricochet, idk if you guys realized but she actually references each of her stolen albums in the first chorus:
“I didn’t have it in myself to go with Grace” - State Of Grace - Red
“And you’re the hero flying around, saving face” - Superman - Speak Now
“And if I’m dead to you why are you at the wake?” - “oh cause she’s dead” - reputation
“Cursing my name” - TWILY “2am and I’m cursing your name” - Fearless
    “Wishing you’d stay” - AYHTDWS- 1989
“Look at how my tears ricochet” - teardrops on my guitar - Debut

That’s amazing! I thought I was clever to pick up on the album / era references in Cardigan… “vintage tee, brand new phone”: Red (“hipsters”); “high heels on cobblestones”: 1989 (NYC); “sequin smile, black lipstick”: Rep; “sensual politics”: Lover.

AHHHHH‼️🔥🔥WHAT❓❗️🔥🔥She DIRECTLY wrote her first six albums directly into the first chorus⁉️🤯WHAT‼️ These six albums - her “JEWELS” he was wearing at her wake - were directly written into this song -> NOT MERELY IMPLIED❓‼️OMFG! 🤯🤯🤯🤯KNOCK OUT! 😵‍💫🥊 ❤️LOVE LOVE LOVE IT‼️‼️‼️To all who picked up on this stratospheric brain work -> YOU’RE FIRE TOO‼️‼️‼️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
For two years I’ve mainly understood “My Tears Ricochet”, repeatedly moved and blown away by it, but the higher degrees of her genius that’ve been lost on me…. A BIT DEVASTATING🙀 I FEAR TO FATHOM HOW MUCH OF HER DEEP ARTISTIC BRILLIANCE HAS AND MAY CONTINUE TO BE LOST ON ME. 📣Can anyone recommend deep analytical sources on her work? 🖋📝📽🎥 **NOTE: Bonnie & Emily Excluded**: I’m getting tired of the mainstay of reactions of TS’ work skewing, mischaracterizing, missing and getting TONS wrong. Fun rides🎡🎠, but overall unsatisfying in the truer quest of deeper understanding and discovery. 🤿🐟🚀🪐🔭🌌-> LIKE THIS ONE! 🎖💎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I haven’t been able to find many truly sophisticated resources that delve into her songs’ lyrical and musical content as well as context, including lyrics and musical samples, chords or melodies that too are referencing external things, esp. her own past songs, as well as those of other artists. 🙏🏽I’d be so so grateful for resource suggestions. 🙏🏽💐AND MOST OF ALL, THANK YOU FOR READING THIS COMMENT. I’d LOVE to hear yours on this topic. 💞BEST, and… 😊LONG LIVE!🏔🐉💞

Loved the list! Think Death By a Thousand Cuts should've made this Extended Metaphor ranking! The entire song works because of the metaphor "saying goodbye is death by a thousand cuts". There's the obvious lyrics and idioms alluding to death -- "dress to kill" and "kill my time" combined into "dress to kill my time" -- but also how in the SUPERIOR bridge the extensive listing of the things (or the "my my my"s that are her "sound" for this song, "my wine, my spirit, my trust") make it seem like each one is a single stinging cut: and she has a thousand of them. I also think Death By a Thousand Cuts is an ancient sort of way to die, in a time when you could be sentenced to death by punishment such as being drawn and quartered or decimated, and the language like "story's over", boarded up rooms" evokes the idea of an old manor or something, or an ancient time as does "lawless land" and "great love, one for the ages"... idk, that's just the vibe I get. But yeah, that's my first addition. Second is Holy Ground!! It's the anti-DBATC, so just see everything I said, except with positive connotation where DBATC has a negative one! (Looking back on their relationship she feels like it was Holy Ground rather than feeling like it [ending] was DBATC). Great vid, as usual!

The whole video I was waiting for Ivy! It’s such a strong metaphor for reawakening and the way that a new love in your live can consume you; “My House of Stone your ivy grows. And now I’m covered in you”. It also tells about the danger of this all consuming love, “Crescent moon, coast is clear, spring breaks loose but so does fear, he’s gonna burn this house to the ground”. Also the old widow grieving and contrasting the circumstance of the narrator and Ivy is so brilliant.

I might be biased because it's my favorite song ever but "right where you left me" should definitely be a contender on this list! I like how the songwriting in that song can be taken both metaphorically or literally, in a supernatural kind of way. And I really feel like Taylor is going for both at the same time, you know? It feels really mystical and haunting and it completely encapsulates what she was going for with the lyricism in folklore and evermore.

Something I haven’t seen a lot of people talking about is the fact that cowboy like me can actually be connected to taylor and joe and their relationship, mainly when you relate the lyrics to other clear taylor/joe songs like ready for it, end game, cruel summer, cornelia street, false god, daylight, etc. I feel like these lyrics direcly correlate to the whole metaphor of cowboy like me:
“Knew he was a killer / first time that i saw him / wonder how many girls he had loved and left haunted” / “knew i was a robber first time that he saw me / stealing hearts and running off and never saying sorry / but if i’m a thief, then he can join the heist” - talking about both of their pasts in a way that is extremely similar to clm
“You’ve been calling my bluff on all my usual tricks” - relates directly to “i have some tricks up my sleeve, takes one to know one etc”
“Back when we were card sharks, playing games / I thought you were leading me on” - same energy
The whole idea of false god i think relates to the “forever is the sweetest con” line, meaning that even if it’s just a con or a false god, they’re still willing to go for it
Daylight also has so many lyrics that relate to clm: “My love was as cruel as the cities I lived in, everyone looked worse in the light”/ “maybe you ran with the wolves and refused to settle down / maybe i stormed out of every single room in this town / threw out our cloaks and our daggers because its morning now”
I mean, this is obv just my opinion, i could be totally wrong in this, but I feel like clm is such a layered song, you can read it superficially with just the cowboys and bandits concept, you can go a bit deeper and understand the fictional story about these con artists as taylor said in her post, you can read it as a story about two people who wouldn’t/couldn’t settle down, or you can relate it to taylor herself and her relationship with joe, and i think that makes the song even more profound and interesting, because it puts them and their past in a gray and kind of unflattering light, but also shows how their relationship changed them for the better

    • Cecilia Rogers
Cecilia Rogers 5 ай бұрын +1

I totally agree!! There's also 'eyes full of stars/ starry eyes sparking up my darkest night' and the 'old guys that i swindled / toying with them older guys'. The ladies lunching could be a reference to all the girlfriends Joe had, apparently he was a ladies man. It's such a gorgeous love song, I can't believe she wrote it about anyone else other than Joe.

    • CC
      CC 5 ай бұрын +2

@albean37 “the old men that I swindled really did believe I was the one” never ceases to make me laugh. I know it’s supposed to tie in with the metaphor of I guess in modern day terms looking for a sugar daddy and using the old men for their money, but it makes me laugh because if we tie it into her real life, she’s basically referring to the older men she dated like John and Jake. Which is especially hilarious because we know from I bet you think about me that Jake was allegedly “scared not to be hip, scared to get old” and in this song, she calls him an old man. 😂 she has the classiest most metaphorical clap backs I swear. (Not a Jake hater btw, I don’t support the hate he got after Red TV - it was ten years ago and the focus should’ve been on the music and Taylor reclaiming her albums, not old drama but I just think the old man thing is kinda funny when you tie it into her past relationships and other song mentions)

    • Marcela Teixeira
Marcela Teixeira 5 ай бұрын +1

@Toni Lovely I wouldn’t necessarily say that every song on folklore and evermore are about her and joe, but I see what you mean. They all definitely touch at the very least on feelings that are very real to her, be it about a past relationship or experience, but she writes them in such a clever way that they can work on multiple different levels

    • Marcela Teixeira
      Marcela Teixeira 5 ай бұрын

@albean37 YES! 100% agree with everything you just said! CLM is just such a beautifully written song, when I listened to it for the first time I just couldn’t fathom all the layers of meaning that she managed to create in the song. I feel like every time I listen to it I learn something new about it ❤

    • Toni Lovely
Toni Lovely 5 ай бұрын +3

Me with almost every song on Folklore and Evermore. Bothers me so much when people say they aren’t about Joe, but it’s fair to say you do have to look for the connections if you aren’t already knowledgeable about their relationship

Ivy is like a triple metaphor, its consuming the house (person) in a way that can be beautiful on the outside but, also warping the house into a something new or even rotting it to the inside, its not the same house (person) it once was and ivy was often presented to the bride and groom as symbol of everlasting life, devotion, fidelity and loyalty.

I do have to say that Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince is one of my absolute favorite songs on Lover for sure. You’re right, maybe not my favorite ever. But it is such a fulfilling song to listen to when I felt (still feel) that way about politics. And of course the metaphor is superior!!

While not a metaphor, I’ve always loved her ability to discretely reference her past in MAATHP in the first verse, “crazier for you than I was at sixteen, lost in a film scene” being a reference to writing the song Crazier, which she sung in a scene from the Hannah Montana movie.

i always took the line in new years day “don’t read the last page” to mean the opinion-editorial page of a newspaper, which reflects the idea of reputation and how the media twisted her reputation & her asking joe not to read it; she also references this in delicate & this is why we can’t have nice things “my reputations never been worse so he must like me for me” and “he ain’t reading what they call me lately”

AND with willows having such strong, deep, and invasive roots, things don’t/can’t really grow or get too close to the tree so it’s almost like willows have to grow in their own little clearing (the clear from Out of the Woods!) which is also perfect for how their relationship is way more private 💚

I love how you are doing another ranking video right as i decided to rank all of taylor's songs today. And obviously i did it while watching the video where you two did it. I just appreciate this channel so much, I haven't had many friends lately and watching your videos feels extremely comforting to me. I wanted to thank you for giving us so much content lately. Yes you represent swifties very well but it feels so special because you dont only react, which is so special because you share those moments with us. But you also talk about things and you share your ideas which is so helpful. Thank you for this channel. Bonny I hope you enjoy Paris. Emily I hope you enjoy paris (soon).

I think shotgun shot could also refer to the ‘shotgun’ term when driving in a car with someone. Riding ‘shotgun’ means riding in the front of the car - the passengers seat. For the first verse I think she’s referring to this. We never had a shotgun shot in the dark. There was no chance this relationship was gonna take the front seat. However I think in the second verse she then ties it into the crime aspect of the song, saying it hit you like a shotgun shot to the heart.

I would include gold rush to honorary mentions. Dating with the person that everyone admires as if they were gold in 19th century. This metaphor ties the song together so well!
Also intro and outro somehow connect with the vibe and this metaphor, even though Taylor does not specifically mention gold rush there
    And yes, #goldrushforever

When I first heard My Tears Ricochet I wasn’t into it. I thought it was related to the cardigan storyline or whatever it was before we figured out what the three related songs were. Once I figured out that it was personal and I wrapped my head around the metaphors, it became one of my faves on the album.
And most of these songs are my faves, so now we know what I care about 😅

I could be wrong but I think New Year's Day is also about the quiet moments that are just for them. Like, the party is when there are loads of people around, and it's very flashy, etc. But then the next morning everyone else has gone home and it's just them and I love it. I totally agree with it being representative of the good and bad times in their relationship, but have you ever tidied up after a great party with someone you love? Everyone else is gone, everything is quiet and peaceful, every time you turn around there's a memory that makes you smile, you can see a feather on the floor and you both burst out laughing because of something that happened last night that will be an inside joke with you and like three other people forever... It can honestly be amazing fun. And it's so different but at least as real as the party, which I kind of see as representing the parts of their relationship that the media sees.

I saw someone on reddit talking about the significance in the chorus of MTR being linked to the albums that were sold:
"I didn't have it in myself to go with GRACE (state of grace - red)
And you're the HERO flying around saving face (superman - speak now)
And if I'm DEAD to you, why are you at the wake (the old taylor is dead - rep)
CURSING my name (the way I loved you - fearless)
Wishing I'd STAYED (all you had to do was stay - 1989)
Look at how my TEARS ricochet (teardrops on my guitar - TS)"
I don't know if it's just a coincidence but if she did plan this, it's even more genius

Out of The Woods is also a parallel to Snow White lol. How she's lost in the forest, scared of everything around her trying to get her, but they were just trees, her paranoia made her think they were monsters.
