In France, most buses (especially in Paris) have a secondary horn which is more like a tiny bell sound. It's also designed as a courtesy horn they can use regularly, since horn usage is prohibited in cities in France unless immediate danger. I agree with you, this should be a standard equipment on all cars.
yes but who use it when there is immediate danger? nobody. I regularly use the double honk for the same people texting at a red light or while driving.
I love this idea and definitely think it would be a great addition to all cars. I know when I started driving getting honked at would scare and stress me out so much that I would just stop thinking and just mess up much worse. Luckily no accidents were ever caused and no one was ever hurt but I still think the aggressive honk is counterproductive in increasing road safety especially for new drivers.
It’s really nice that he knows all facts and it’s not like he is making everything up on the spot He also makes his videos soo funny and cool which you can watch whenever you want and this will always stay funny for me.
manufacturers will intentionally change the design of a car to shave under 20 cents per unit off, so I don't see them adding courtesy horns anytime soon :(
FM: Just lightly and quickly tap the horn twice (not push). BB: He did explain in the beginning that the horn doesn't register if you dont hold FM: Not the case with every auto. WD: Exactly. Brownie's point still applies. FM: Except when it doesn't.
No. BB is correct, the video author's vehicle doesn't allow for a quick tap. That's the point of the video. Your comment isn't relevant, as this doesn't work for the author's car.
Wonderful. I have always mini-beeped at the appropriate time for all the reasons you have given. I also wanted train air horns on my Ford Pinto at age 17, mostly to stop cars from backing up at me when they clearly didn't see me there. Brilliant job and thanks!
I love how you used the unused button space in your car's dashboard for the alternate horn buttons. I am actually startled by how many cars have unused button spaces on their dashboards. Also, what is the street legality of this horn modification depending on one's jurisdiction?
Probably in most places, as long as the standard horn is still there, you're probably OK adding a courtesy horn? And if you're not, who's ever going to catch you??
In alberta (canada), the train horn is illegal but the others are. That's kind of a guess though, the only law is that 1. the horn must be.. not a train horn, and 2. the car must HAVE at least 1 horn
As someone who is very cautious about pulling into traffic and always has people honking at her the exact second the light goes green, i support this 100%. It may still scare me and make me jump though. Also now i need an itty bitty car with big truck horn in my life
I liked this project so I decided to make one with a couple of twists. Where Mark is using only two of the available I/O's on the ADAFRUIT board, I used all 11. Input 0 is my fixed "beep beep" sound. I used a 12 position rotary switch to select input 1 - 10 and that selects which I/O gets sent to ground. I installed a momentary up/down toggle, center off. If I click it down, it plays "beep beep". If I click it up, it plays whatever sound I assigned to the rotary switch position I have selected. I did buy the same lighted horn buttons Mark used but there was nowhere to install them (2020 Ford Ranger). Next, the P.A speaker in the link is too under-powered for my liking. I'm surprised Mark's didn't blow up but he may have the gain on the amp turned down. I got two Whelen emergency speakers and utilized both channels of the amp. With a signal generator and meter, I calculated each speaker to be putting out 47 watts for a total of 94 watts! It may not sound like much but these speakers are very directional. After police officers suffering hearing loss from when the sirens were on the roof, laws were passed requiring them to be on the front of the vehicle. I wanted to buy a meter to measure the actual db's being put out but I didn't want to spend a few hundred dollors to get an exact number...I just know it's loud!!! Phase 2 - The three trumpets for the air horns are installed. Hopefully the compressor and tank are installed by the end of the week. Places to go, neighbors to annoy........
“But good news is. As an engineer if something isn’t exactly how you want it. You just make it exactly how you want it.” - Mark Rober 2017 What a uplifting quote
@QZ-Terminate-ZQ Hm... would you really though? I'm really doubting it but then again you could be one of those people who follow through and through with their bets, bargains, deals, and promises... but... would you really though?
@Raiaka When someone put "DIY" in the title, it usually reflects it's a guide to, well, do it yourself. I was sort of disappointed that this video ended so quickly. Not because I want to do it, but because I wanted to see the steps he did it with. Your point is legit, however, so is his.
My idea is that since all cars have Bluetooth nowadays you should be able to just send a message to the other person that just appears as an alert for the other driver. For example a courtesy message that the light is green, or your turn signal is on. You could also have quick messages to tell someone to change lanes so you can pass or something like that. Then there is no confusion as to what the drivers are telling you with their horn.
Cars should have a horizontal light bar across the back that has green for when you press the gas and red for braking. The harder you press the pedal, the more of the light bar is lit. Everyone behind you knows exactly what you're doing. And flashing red would work for max braking.
Nice! I've always wanted 2 horns in a car. One is the standard OMG WERE ABOUT TO WRECK horn, and the other is a polite clearing of the throat horn. Well done.
I am blown away! Thank you for everything you are sharing I am learning with just the videos I'm catching on KZclip. I want to enroll to your class. I'm actually excited and willing to learn. Especially with people of all ages. Then I'll be able to share this with my grandchildren. Thank you.
Horn one the left: “Hey, pay attention” Horn on the right: “Please pay attention” Horn in the middle: “TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR, IMMA HIT YOU WITH MY CAR”
Mark, I would like you to use your Engineering Genius to develop a Directional Horn with the ability to bounce off another vehicle. In effect making it SEEM like the other vehicle was the one who sounded the horn. That way I could get the attention of the distracted driver in front of me (for instance), but when they get angry it would NOT be directed at me. I would LOVE to see that horn, a "Ventriloquest" Horn.
Fun fact: here in Korea, we have a full on language by using our emergency lights. It is used for thank you if someone lets you in the lane, and also used as a sorry if you cut into a lane. Very useful stuff because if you use it, the aggressor usually tapers off with less anger as it has become a staple part of the driving language.
This is an awesome idea. I've always thought car horns reduce us to the level of animals, who can only make noises that say, "hey! hey! hey!" btw there used to be a comic who claimed he had hooked up a bullhorn to his car and used it to make sound effects with his mouth.
THANKYOU! I have spoken on my soapbox for years about how we should have more than hammers to communicate. This makes me very happy. My two extra buttons would be sorry and thankyou sounds. And yes, I am Canadian.
You can also communicate with the light honk and you can use the emergency blinking thing button for one cycle of it which is internationally accepted as a thank you.
@Mark Rober, thank you for this video. I love watching your videos. Seems we share many similar passions. Time to go apply myself with this newly obtained knowledge and my vehicle communication problem! ;)
Mark, Tesla gots to start doing this. I think Elon would be totally down for this. Understandable if you can't get a hold of him, but I say it as a compliment because it is something that would be genuinely awesome to see in our future vehicles as we try to make things safer. thank you for your time, what you teach us, and the underlying lesson for our lives that you teach so elegantly! You're Awesome and have a wonderful day with your Awesome family!!
In Europe horns are used in necessary cases only! For other cases one or two short high beams switches are used and it works as well (if the driver infront of you is not literally sleeping :D )
Great idea mark and good to see bob in there too.
I agree R2, it’s a splendid idea! 😂❤
ello
colinfurze Flopjack
we just talked about the beard
Who the hell is bob? And why do you wanna kiss him?
As a Canadian, I found what Mark put in the description hilarious😂
I want one!
Yes I am a Canadian
I love it
Same

I agree with you, this should be a standard equipment on all cars.
I've had the thought of attaching a bicycle bell to the grille or bumper, have a string to actuate it.
I'd love to have one of those bells they use on streetcars in Europe
yes but who use it when there is immediate danger? nobody. I regularly use the double honk for the same people texting at a red light or while driving.
Imagine pressing the wrong button.
Pedestrian: still by her car loading the groceries
Mark: (Uses train horn)
I'd rather imagine a scenario involving us pushing the train horn each time you copy the same exact comment that sits above.
Late reply, but you can label the buttons and infact even use indentions!

BEEEEEEEEP
my thoughts exactly ! :)
Mark has a “buddy” for everything. 🤣
He's like a Godfather, he has connections
"So I called my buddy Jimi Hendrix to come back from the dead"
@Kathleen Lundgaard that’s what I was think
so does rick from pawn stars lol
@Chris Webster you wouldn’t know about friends
I love this idea and definitely think it would be a great addition to all cars. I agree w u. & Anyone who asks if MORE honking is less productive... has missed the point of the video and your comment. Intention is everything. 😁👍👍
More honking is better?
If Mark was Canadian, this would be the most Canadian thing ever.
As a Canadian this is true when we honk someone is just like ok
@Art Vandelay The sound file could also have a Canadian voice quietly saying "Erm... excuse me... if you're ready to move..."
he would fit in perfectly here. he just needs a "Im sorry" honk lol
Well, the sound file could also have a Canadian voice quietly saying "Erm... excuse me... if you're ready to move..."
SORRY
Right Horn: "I'd like your attention? :)"
Left Horn: "Can i please have your attention?"
Middle Horn: *"I'M DONE ASKING, LISTEN UP CHUCKLEHYUK."*
NICE HUSTLE TONS O FUN, NEXT TIME EAT A SALAD!
LMAO
Middle horn:I will put pineapple on your pizza if you don't move.
Soooooooo tru

I've been waiting my entire life to do this. I'm getting my first car in a few months and I can't wait to put one of these horns in!
we
As a Canadian, I can say we're glad to have you!
Look in the description...
same!!!!
It’s really nice that he knows all facts and it’s not like he is making everything up on the spot
He also makes his videos soo funny and cool which you can watch whenever you want and this will always stay funny for me.
These are the three horns I need in NYC:
1. "Stop texting"
2. "Watch out!"
3. "Learn how to drive"
Don’t forget, “use your turn signal” and “GO!”
They need to learn how to drive
I need four in ohio.
1. Move please.
2. Pedestrian horn.
3. Standard horn.
4. GET THE FORK OUTTA THE WAY!!!
Can you push Watch out and learn how to drive at the same time? That's a thing. Haha.
HAHAHAHA
Imagine you wanna hit the super chill curtesy honk and you slip to the FREAKING AIR HORN that pedestrian is gonna have a heart attack XD
almost choked on my drink from laughter reading that lol
*courtesy
Watch them jump out of their shoes hehehe!!
😐
@TheLP FunnTV :D
Finally! I've been telling my wife for years that I wish cars came with a courtesy horn. I hope manufacturers will consider this.
You can do a courtesy movement with your already provided hand.
It would have to become law to have them. More wreaks mean more cars bought.
manufacturers will intentionally change the design of a car to shave under 20 cents per unit off, so I don't see them adding courtesy horns anytime soon :(
Fabulous idea!!! I really like the idea of having alternate horns sounds for different occassions
Sell me one!
This needs to be a standard feature on all cars XD
YASSSSSSSSS
I love this SO much! Please can we get this as a standard on ALL cars?!
If you are driving in India. You only need the red button.
It is true
😂😂
@Akash Sambare😂true
Third world guys now the red button. Juarez Mexico comes to mind
I from India and that's true
I love the R2D2 one! It sounds like it's the car itself politely communicating.
Had this idea years ago. Love your channel. You are living the dream my friend. : )
I have wanted this for years. Hope some car company makes it happen.
I want one! This was brilliant! This would prevent a lot of road rage incidents. These horns should be standard on all cars.
I've been doing *"two quick chirps of the horn"* for 50+ years. Just lightly and quickly tap the horn twice (not push). Works like a charm.
@Wayne Dooley I'm sure you feel much better after getting all that out.
@Feather Merchant -- Sigh. Okay, here goes.
FM: Just lightly and quickly tap the horn twice (not push).
BB: He did explain in the beginning that the horn doesn't register if you dont hold
FM: Not the case with every auto.
WD: Exactly. Brownie's point still applies.
FM: Except when it doesn't.
No. BB is correct, the video author's vehicle doesn't allow for a quick tap. That's the point of the video. Your comment isn't relevant, as this doesn't work for the author's car.
@Wayne Dooley *"- whioooosh! :) :)"* Oh my, something seems to have gotten under your dust ruffle!
@Feather Merchant - whioooosh! :) :)
@Wayne Dooley Thanks for acknowleding.
I changed my horn to gunshot noises, now people get out of the way faster :)
I think your talking about gta 5
@Crimson Sun yeah, it’s called a joke
@I_Dont_Eat_My_Friends lol
I added a used train horn from a class 142 in mine, now I can make 2 tones at people >:)
Nah, backfire is better, wroooom papapapapapapap
Yes! I have always thought we needed a friendly horn option. It’s baffling why it isn’t already a standard thing in cars.
I LOVE this!! Mark R, you make the world a better, more joyful place :) I hope car manufacturers think so too....
Wonderful. I have always mini-beeped at the appropriate time for all the reasons you have given. I also wanted train air horns on my Ford Pinto at age 17, mostly to stop cars from backing up at me when they clearly didn't see me there. Brilliant job and thanks!
This man really makes the world a better place.
Trueeeee
You are a very creative electronic technician. I like the idea. Love the R2-D2 beep at most! :)
What I’d make is
1) angry horn
2) ship docking horn
3) nuclear alarm horn
Me press horn:
Horn: BBBRRRRRRRNNNNNTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
🤣
TACTICAL NUKE INCOMIMG BERRRERWRAERAERRSRAR
When would you need a nuclear alarm?
mark: *makes two kids have a bad day*
also mark: *happily says thanks for watching at the end of the video*

I really like the idea of OEM built courtesy horn. If not for anything, at least communicating a thank you to fellow drivers will be a great gesture.
I remember watching this a while ago and I still to this day desperately want to have this type of setup like so badly!!!
in Orlando you need 3 buttons
1) train horn
2) louder train horn
3) ground rumbling train horn
no nuke sound?
weak...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Brie 🇺🇦 better yet, an a-10 warthog, or even an f-16 BRRRRT

I love it, loud honks spook me even if they aren't for me.
I too, installed one of these horn buttons using a step bit to properly fit it into place. The car owner was impressed it looked so professional.
I liked this project so I decided to make one with a couple of twists. Where Mark is using only two of the available I/O's on the ADAFRUIT board, I used all 11. Input 0 is my fixed "beep beep" sound. Love it… As hard as I’ve tried, I’ve never been able to manually achieve the “friendly horn.”
“But good news is. As an engineer if something isn’t exactly how you want it. You just make it exactly how you want it.” - Mark Rober 2017
What a uplifting quote
“Necessity is the mother of invention.” Mark Rober paraphrased.
That should be his "We will remember this person with this line" line.
@becky same
@becky same haha
Well in Germany it isnt allowed to build in such horns thats sad
Love the creativity. I would buy a car I did not even like if it had this feature.
Hearing a train horn coming out of a Jetta has got to be a surreal experience.
Yes ! For decades I've wanted a more flexible horn
You make being way too cool, way cool! Congrats on your channel and creative talents.
Mark Rober, you are just too cool. 😎 Awesome videography too.
Car almost crashes into Mark
Mark: Ok let’s use my regular horn
Teenagers taking sweet time
Mark: NOW THIS IS AN AVENGERS LEVEL THREAT
Team Jiadee great lol
@QZ-Terminate-ZQ Hm... would you really though? I'm really doubting it but then again you could be one of those people who follow through and through with their bets, bargains, deals, and promises... but... would you really though?
Mark: "And now you can do it yourself"
Me: "Howww?"
Sooo true
Yeah a like the content of this page, but it really didn't go into detail about how to do any of this.
My solution: “Oh Daaaaaaaaaaaaaad.”
@Raiaka When someone put "DIY" in the title, it usually reflects it's a guide to, well, do it yourself. I was sort of disappointed that this video ended so quickly. Not because I want to do it, but because I wanted to see the steps he did it with. Your point is legit, however, so is his.
@Raiaka well the answer is money, not the items needed
My idea is that since all cars have Bluetooth nowadays you should be able to just send a message to the other person that just appears as an alert for the other driver. For example a courtesy message that the light is green, or your turn signal is on. You could also have quick messages to tell someone to change lanes so you can pass or something like that. Then there is no confusion as to what the drivers are telling you with their horn.
Love it. All passenger vehicles and main battle tanks should have this.
I'm so glad he made this cuz I get so easily offended when people honk their horn at me when I'm stopped at a green light for 5 minutes.
This should be standard in cars. Great job!
If this became an actual thing, how cool would “the Rober system” sound
I heard something like it at one point. Some guy had a train horn
Rober horn
Robber* LOL
And it’s so cheap and simple
Sorry to break it but that would be pretty unoriginal
Thanks, Mark - we're building it - thanks Mark my kids ( and I ) love your KZclip Channel! Even 5 years later, this video is having an impact!
Hey how did it go? 😊 I'm also really considering it
Cars should have a horizontal light bar across the back that has green for when you press the gas and red for braking.
Thank you.
This is a super great idea! Is it on Amazon yet???
Horn one the left: “Hey, pay attention”
Horn on the right: “Please pay attention”
Horn in the middle: “TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR, IMMA HIT YOU WITH MY CAR”
This has made .e laugh more Ryan it should. Congratulations person from 2 years ago!
loooool
Lol
Lol
@priscila WoAhH sO cOoL
I wish I was an absolute genius like this guy
You do not have to be a genius for this... It is simple. But still a great idea.
Mark you are too pure for this world
Mark, I would like you to use your Engineering Genius to develop a Directional Horn with the ability to bounce off another vehicle. In effect making it SEEM like the other vehicle was the one who sounded the horn. That way I could get the attention of the distracted driver in front of me (for instance), but when they get angry it would NOT be directed at me. I would LOVE to see that horn, a "Ventriloquest" Horn.
Those horns are soo cool! We were thinking about putting in a train horn. But now i feel like I need to get more creative🤙
This is an awesome idea! Could save lives and also just make someone’s day.
I’d install a horn that makes the “bruh” sound effect
That would be funny
Get a tesla
And if the pedestrian doen´t move: AAAAUGH!
*-cheese +100-*
This kind of horn system needs to be a standard option in every single car
Well as a driver who uses hand gestures to thank other kind drivers I would really love to have multiple horns in my car.
I think everyone should have that like the rtd2 honk and the train honk really useful
Now THAT was VERY useful! - Thanks Mark - My electric Scooter is gonna be Crazy!
Car almost crashes into Mark
Mark: Ok let’s use my regular horn
Teenagers taking sweet time
Mark: *NOW THIS IS AN AVENGERS LEVEL THREAT*
I would do the same tbh lol
@Advik *HOL UP*
Yes AVENGERS ARE SUPER PEOPLE WHO HAVE BIG BOI HORNSSSSSSSSSS
*Presses The Loudest Horn Ever.*
@RoachMcToast he wasnt being entitled he was testing a horn.
AMAZING video Mark! Keep it up, dude.
This is an awesome idea. I've always thought car horns reduce us to the level of animals, who can only make noises that say, "hey! hey! hey!" btw there used to be a comic who claimed he had hooked up a bullhorn to his car and used it to make sound effects with his mouth.
Dude I had this idea years ago, but I never had the resources or knowledge to bring it to life. Thanks for this :)
Mark Rober - "You can do it yourself!"
Us - You used a team of specialists!
If only Mark and his team were available for hire…. and I could afford them.
yess !!!!
Hey Mark -
Do you ever feel like your head is about to explode from thinking too hard sometimes?
I DO.
Keep on sharing your thoughts and ideas!
He should bring this idea straight to Elon, sure he'll find a way to integrate this into his cars and the autopilot
Um he did. I'm watching this video to demonstrate to my son why we don;t need a Tesla for its customizable horn feature.
Grandma: **crosses road**
Tesla: Excuse me ma’am
New tesla update
R2D2 Autopilot
LOL
I demand this variety of horns on all car models
*lets make it happen peeps*
THANKYOU! I have spoken on my soapbox for years about how we should have more than hammers to communicate. This makes me very happy. My two extra buttons would be sorry and thankyou sounds. And yes, I am Canadian.
I've always wanted options like this!! Well, the nice horn options haha.
“If you’re an engineer and something isn’t how you want it. You can engineer it to how you want it.”

This video has existed for 3 years and cars still don’t have these
5 years now
4 years now

Now im doing mark rober marathon. your vids are really great and fun!~
same.....
This is the best idea. I always think two short toots sounds so much nicer than one short toot.
Mark should talk with some car companies so their cars would have these horns.
Can't tell how many times i've watched this same video...the quality is great on this channel!!
Mark has a “buddy” for everything.
Imagine an old grandma crossing the road infront of you and you accidentally press the train horn button
Car use Uproar! Critical hit! It's super effective!
*”did someone say something?”*
You made me laugh way more than I should have
The grandma: my time has come
It wont matter because now she just became on step closer to becoming sonic the hedgehog
ive seen this vid way way back
and only now that i realize that the dude who made this awesome vid is none other than mark rober himself
im at awe
@Mark Rober, thank you for this video. I love watching your videos. Seems we share many similar passions. Time to go apply myself with this newly obtained knowledge and my vehicle communication problem! ;)
This guy is so big brain he literally can change the world with support
I loved how the background sound stopped as the hammer was trying to hammer the wires lol 😂
Mark, Tesla gots to start doing this. I think Elon would be totally down for this. Understandable if you can't get a hold of him, but I say it as a compliment because it is something that would be genuinely awesome to see in our future vehicles as we try to make things safer. thank you for your time, what you teach us, and the underlying lesson for our lives that you teach so elegantly! doubt the cars with these would be approved for commercial use
Imagine pressing the red one on accident when there is a pedestrian
@Maxwell Morgan it is tho
Now imagine if it was a supernloud airhorn...
Lol
Omg lol XD
Instant ear damage
I wish I had space for these in my car 😄
In Europe horns are used in necessary cases only! For other cases one or two short high beams switches are used and it works as well (if the driver infront of you is not literally sleeping :D )
Definitely agree with you that cars should come standard with a second "nice" horn.
