I think people under estimate the overall difficulty of such a task that this man accomplished. The strength, the accuracy, time management (seasons, weather, daylight), the mental aspect (being secluded, wild animals, not close to healthcare, absent from family), oh and documenting all of it, editing and everything else that I missed. My hats off to Shawn. “My self Reliance” I couldn’t thin of a better title. Happy New Year!
So well said! This guy is an inspiration for anyone who is thinking how do I get started with a difficult goal and how do I stay on course to completion!
I’m not underestimating anything. I can barely get my own laundry done each weekend, and last time I built some IKEA furniture I literally wept with frustration. I could not be more in awe if this guy had pulled out a magic wand and enchanted the trees to dance themselves into a log cabin.
As a man who has trouble putting together IKEA furniture (even with the directions), I am in awe of your amazing skill and hard work. What a beautiful cabin in the woods!
Tip: its not funny or cute but foolish & weak to demean your SELF like that there's plenty of people who are all too willing to do it for you then next take from you all you have and hold most dear if that is what you truly want.
What an incredible achievement. The guy is a hero! Unimaginable strength and determination, blood sweat and grit. I've been watching a lot of log cabin builds and I think this has got to be the best one I've seen! Astonishing.
Enormously inspiring! I have been away for a while. I found out through a friend that, “you have done it again,” and I must say it is even better the second time. I am in a process myself of “having to do it again” (not a cabin), and your example is inspiring like nothing else. Thank you!
I would be this man's apprentice in a heartbeat! I am an engineer and can work out the details, the math, and planning, but the man's sheer determination is what I need with a big job like this!
I've been subscribed to your channel going back a ways. Despite what you've accomplished in building remote cabins in the past this one is even more impressive! I was amazed how you were able to handle large, heavy logs using a block-and-tackle system and were able to scale and notch the logs using hand tools. I've been fascinated by the idea of building remote homesteads since encountering the Woodswoman books by Anne La Bastille and later the video "Alone in the Wilderness" about the cabin built in a remote part of Alaska by Dick Proenneke.
You, Sir, are an awesome example of a Man! Truly inspiring is all I can say! I have watched dozens of your shows before, always with growing respect for you, your vision, talents and determination/staying power. But watching this particular video of two years of your continuous effort I was again stunned and in awe. You are a force to be reckoned with! And your creations are quite beautiful. safe and will stand the testing of time and elements! TY
It is mind boggling to see how an extremely difficult task was managed by a single person. His knowledge and ability to use basic tools was very impressive. What the video doesn’t show is how much mental strength he needed to persist to completion. Shawn I congratulate you for completing a monumental job. It was obvious you had the ability to overcome any and all obstacles.
Or even the physical strength, people who live in asbestos filled apartments in America, or I'll speak only for Los Angeles, can't imagine the labor of lifting one small sized window by themselves.
What I would've done to be on that site working with this man, and absorbing every single moment of perspicacious knowledge I could. This is the work of a man that has overcome many trials. I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration.
It's been two years already?! Man, there is a lot in there I forgot was done. Considering all this was done by one man, it's an amazing accomplishment.
This was fascinating to watch. The amount of planning needed, the different tools needed to be off grid, and then single handedly placement of each piece. Wow! Enjoy!
Watching this for the second time I’ve seen things I missed. This really is simply an astounding feat. You take empty space and fill it with this beautiful cozy cabin. It just blows my mind away. The being alone part is fine. When you have your dog, your not alone. ❤
I must say how impressed that I am. My shoulders ache watching this, but I know how rewarding it feels when structures come to fruition. You really know your stuff.. with brace and bit, no less. I've designed (drawn on paper) things and built them by hand, and know how much work it can be.
What an incredible feat this had to have been. I'm an accomplished woodworker, but I was completely amazed by the workmanship, stamina, and determination of this man. Great video, as well as a great finished product. You have my sincere respect, sir!! Thank you.
Golden retrievers make the best supervisors! I would have to have double the amount of tools because my Golden would steal the tools behind my back! Your pup looks so happy to have their toy thrown! I have to admit my back hurts watching you work so hard! Your hard work is impressive!
When I saw you are building your cabin under the heavy snow I remembered my father that he passed away since seven years, his job was construction he was always working under the snow ❄️. God bless you and RIP my father. Men always worked for their families, he raised us with his own fatigue and I appreciate every dad that worked so hard. God bless you again.
The long winding road from trees to cabin took its toll but look at the resulting videos achieved and the masses that stayed with you Shawn and Cali. All the best for tomorrow - 1st January 2023
Nice to watch.. felt like I was there.. love the echo of the tools! Great skills... amazing planning!! And the dog was happy:) Thanks for sharing what most of us dream about.
I honestly envy this man not only he can build a home HE HAS THE Time TO DO IT !! here I am watching him on a tablet wishing I was me ... But back to reality somebody has to pay the mortgage I guess
So wish there were more Canadian men like you! Watching this build was awe- inspiring . I was holding my breath many times! Especially when you were working in the cold of winter with those frozen, and I imagine very slippery logs! You have the skills of many trades and what you have accomplished by your ingenuity, skills and strength is amazing. Thanks for sharing the whole progress from a Nova Scotia gal...now off to watch the interior vid!❤❤❤
I watched the first cabin build religiously I was so sad when you had to leave it but after re finding this channel and seeing the new and improved cabin I’m glad it happened beautiful work and amazing video as always
We've been watching since you started your first cabin. It was unfortunate to see you go, but given the circumstances we don't blame you. We love THIS CABIN so much more! Possibly, it's because of the root cellar, the style and overall length. You've put yourself through some trying times and you stand by the title of your KZclip name! That includes your familys' unconditional support. (P.S. Let us know if you'd ever consider selling the plans to your cabin. We'd definitely be interested!) To you Shawn James, Callie and family: Have a Healthy & Happy New Year!!! God Bless! 🗓️ 🥂🎉🇨🇦
@James McCabe I believe he mentioned someone buying the plot closer to his own, and it was too much noise, interaction and proximity to the new developers. He picked a father area on his own huge plot. Hope that helps. 😊
@Dylan Mccoy Shawn originally built his first cabin (on this YT page) and other structural log buildings way more than 2 years ago. All that tedious work, by hand, on the same property, but in a different location. That first phase had an old-fashioned laundry room, sauna, outdoor kitchen, shed, outhouse etc... Sold it. You'd have to see if the video's are still up? Then you'd understand why the relocation. But, at least, this new cabin is much larger with a huge, root cellar and he installed/built an enclosed semi-hydroponic greenhouse and shed. Shawn is a determined man with a strong disposition. He is Self Reliance. 👍
This man knows what he is doing ! It impresses me to no end to see the determination , no time wasted here ! Its mind boggling to see so many individuals pushing shopping carts around the city and begging for whatever , then you see someone like this , independent, determined , focused and asking nothing of anyone ! This man is not wasting time on this earth doing nothing ! he is using his head and muscle like the lord designed him to do ! God bless you sir and god bless your family !
It's really disheartening to realize that most people will never be able to do this in their entire lifetimes. You are really lucky Shawn. Wishing you only the best.
Wow 🤯! It took me 10 years to get my house built! (Little by little so I wouldn't get into debt.) And you did an amazing home all by yourself in two years! Really impressive work!
We have a tendency to forget things with times. Seeing the two years in fast motion is a reminder of all the work you did to get to what it is now and you did not even mention the greenhouse and garden and all the other stuff you did. Great work, for a man alone, you put a heck of a performance. Happy New year.
What an absolute champion! This is so inspiring! Love the lack of electric powered hand tools! This guy is a true carpenter/builder! Bring back this typof old school skill & resilience! Plus love the dog! :)
Man, I love and appreciate what you do in your videos. My wife thinks I'm crazy because I love watching it, but it's so inspiring to me. I also love that you pay so much attention to the detail of every step of the process. Amazing! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents!!
Happy New Year everyone! Shawn to you and your family, as well Cally! You re an inspiration to all of us! You keep our peace in mind and stress away! Blessings
I have enjoyed watching your videos from the start years ago. I wish I would have documented all the cabins I have built over the years. Great job Shawn!
Man this is such a good video. The editing is spot on. Hiting all the right angles. And giving us the right shots at the right time. It let's you injoy the exciting, yet relaxing build. Then it picks you back up with some music. And the build, sir you are a master at your craft!!! Doing it yourself is where it's at too! Hats off to you sir. 👏
As a retired carpenter after 50 years in the trades I can certainly understand the trials and tribulations you must have went through behind the scenes during the different phases of construction.
That’s quite the craftsmanship you have. That takes a lot of knowledge and know how to do something that complex let alone doing it by yourself and document your build. I so wished I would have done something like this in my life. It would take the rest of my days to do it now. A tip of my hat goes to you sir.
I, too, have watched you from the beginning of building your 1st cabin. I'm in absolute disbelief that you have been able to keep up such consistent stamina in single-handedly erecting these beautiful structures. I am amazed that one man can hoist those giant logs (alone, by yourself!), high into the air, etc. How you stay after such a laborious, ongoing task day after day, month after month, year after year thru all 4 seasons (including wind, hail, snow & freezing temperatures is purely astounding and beyond my comprehension! Do you ever get sick, tired, burned out, or purely weary of such a massive task? In my book, your mental & physical endurance may make you ONE OF A KIND!! God bless you, your precious Callie & supportive family. Your massive, incredible, gob-smacking accomplishments deserve far more recognition as you work alone, isolated from civilization, enduring ALL out there alone in the wilderness. For your sake, I hope they have log cabins in Heaven!!
This man derives more satisfaction in one of his projects that many of us in an entire life! It is so refreshing to see him work. God bless him and his family endlessly!
Amazing! What an accomplishment, this is the most amazing project for one man I've seen and you did it with great skill and it came out top notch. I would love to know many of the details and trivia of this build. Cheers!
Wow! What a beautiful accomplishment. Fascinating to watch. Love that all you hear is your breathing, the sounds of the tools and the birds. Very calming and relaxing. Every now and then just a little soft music. Perfect. Thank you.
Hi Shawn , I’m looking in on your channel once more as the year comes to its end and as we pass into 2023 , I’ve been a keen viewer of your great adventure of life living in amongst the trees. Your last location was beautiful and grow out of the woods , The home stead your building now is going to be even more photogenic as it sits in the woods . Stay safe . I wish you Shawn and wife and family ,Happy New Year. 🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🇬🇧👍🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄🍁🎉🌲🎄
Tonight I spent an hour-and-a-half watching this entire video from start to finish and I couldn't be more pleased. Such Beautiful work! I'll strive to one day to have the same patience and intestinal fortitude to build something similar.
Truly amazing efforts, accompanied by a strong & continuous hard work, rain & snow never slowed you down, alone with no help from any one, high thumb up for this sole & genius hard work.
You brought so many memories back cf the woodwork! Thorough, methodic, poised, strength, tenacity....Goliath at work! I dare say that I have been fascinated by your mental approach in your work, for your work, aiming at the result of your work. Thank you for the lessons. Even your dog appreciates! Cheers very sincerely from France
Wishing you the very best Mr. Shawn. You need time with your family. Enjoyed watching your progress in building your cabin... awesome ! What dedication. God's speed and good health to you and yours. The best for Callie too. Happy New Year to you and yours Mr. Shawn.
I am so impressed! I keep watching these building off grid builds I so want to do this too! You are so lucky just nature and your dog. We have goldens. Congratulations 👏 👏
I've thoroughly enjoyed watching your journey from start to finish. I'm chuckling to myself as I imagine environmentalists cringing in unity at the sight and sound of falling trees while sipping on their lattes as they scroll on their phones in some metropolis. Nice job Shawn.
That's my kind of man. Love watching him use all the hand tools and the precise way of making everything fit so well together. Congratulations, well done.
Thanks Shawn for putting this into a single video. It’s really cool to see all the episodes that I remember condensed to be able to see how much really went into this. Yet still there’s a lot of stuff not in this, like milling the lumber and such. Blessings happen all the time, and sometimes hard to see immediately, but in my opinion this cabin and setup is way better than the first cabin! Although I really did like the first one as well. Excellent job my friend!
This man is woodcutter , lumberjack carpenter , blacksmith ,painter , Architect , KZclipr ,Guitar player ,Video editor and maybe a singer all in one . "God knows what else he can do "
A great example of “you reap what you sow”. You set a great example of perseverance; what you have accomplished in amazing. May you and your family have many years to enjoy the peace and beauty of your homestead. Happy and blessed New Year.
Wow, amazing! I have been watching but when it's put into all one video you can really see how astonishing your commitment and skills are. Will be on the lookout for the interior tour!
Nothing short of impressive! Gives me even more respect for the elder generations hundreds of years ago who didn't have the tools we have now or the varnish to protect wood etc
Just in total awe of your strength, determination and tenacity among so many superlatives that can be ascribed to your work which is so physical and hard on the body. You are simply superhuman and that is meant in the best possible way.
I am thoroughly convinced that this is a man, that if he wanted, could quite literally accomplish anything he set his mind to. I built my own house 20 years ago with modern tools and help. This would be way out of my wheelhouse. My hat is off to you Shawn, well done!
I grew up in Milford Bay, so very close to Bracebridge. My grandfather was a craftsman like yourself. I can still taste the Maple syrup my granny used to make on her wood stove! Love your work Shawn!
Well quite an amazing feet to say the least, seeing the surrounding trees eager to assist you with the build as you affix your block and falls to them. It’s like having 10 helpers for the price of none. Your a frikin MONSTER. You deserve all the benefits you are reaping from this and more. Thanks for sharing 2 years of your life in under 2 hours. WOW. I hope your first “sit and think” inside the home you built is magical.
I've spent 3 weeks trying to get a composite fence to stand up in the back garden 🤣and here you are building the dream! Its been a blast watching you from day 1 Shawn.....Its been an amazing few years..near time to sit back and relax a bit I hope? greetings from Ireland by the way .....Happy St. Patricks Day..☘☘☘
This is peak internet to me. Watching a guy build a log cabin while I eat my breakfast. I love it and I'm so inspired to go and build something of my own today.
Yeah that's why there are literally millions of people out building such cabins, because they underestimate how hard it is...
So well said! This guy is an inspiration for anyone who is thinking how do I get started with a difficult goal and how do I stay on course to completion!
I watched his work, excellent!! I wondered who did the time lapse video= great job
I’m not underestimating anything. I can barely get my own laundry done each weekend, and last time I built some IKEA furniture I literally wept with frustration. I could not be more in awe if this guy had pulled out a magic wand and enchanted the trees to dance themselves into a log cabin.
Esta persona es incansable en ella no hay lugar para la maldad, el trabajo es orar a Dios y todo el día él ora, un ser humano bueno.
As a man who has trouble putting together IKEA furniture (even with the directions), I am in awe of your amazing skill and hard work. What a beautiful cabin in the woods!
@Rez Zer are u nuts?
Tip: its not funny or cute but foolish & weak to demean your SELF like that there's plenty of people who are all too willing to do it for you then next take from you all you have and hold most dear if that is what you truly want.
Shawn is the definition of PERSEVERENCE! Truly an amazing effort! Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us!
Thank you!
I love how the dog is always like “hey let’s play” as he’s digging out dirt and building
I can't believe its been TWO YEARS! So great. One of the best channels on KZclip.
Yes it is! I ask my youngest son to start watching. He doesn't have much time he's raising 4 boys. 🥰 I hope they grow up being like Mr. Shawn James.
Excellent workmanship. Really something to be proud of. You can’t put a price on something like that!
I would be this man's apprentice in a heartbeat! I am an engineer and can work out the details, the math, and planning, but the man's sheer determination is what I need with a big job like this!
straight away
I've been subscribed to your channel going back a ways. Despite what you've accomplished in building remote cabins in the past this one is even more impressive! I was amazed how you were able to handle large, heavy logs using a block-and-tackle system and were able to scale and notch the logs using hand tools. I've been fascinated by the idea of building remote homesteads since encountering the Woodswoman books by Anne La Bastille and later the video "Alone in the Wilderness" about the cabin built in a remote part of Alaska by Dick Proenneke.

Agreed
Glad Callie is overseeing everything.
It's really awesome what you accomplished.
You're an absolute Superman, really enjoyed watching the skills and effort it takes to make this ginormous cabin, amazing from Brisbane Australia 🍻
That was a backbreaking undertaking! Hell of a job! Hat's off to you!
That amount of tenacity and grits displayed by this man is overwhelming. 👍
Im not even close to finishing this video... and the amount of work being done here is insane! this man is a MAN!
Came for the cabin, stayed for the dog. Amazing work.
Thank you.
Incredible accomplishment. Always fun seeing Callie loving life out there with you as well. Happy New Year Shawn + all!
Golden retrievers make the best supervisors! I would have to have double the amount of tools because my Golden would steal the tools behind my back! Your pup looks so happy to have their toy thrown! I have to admit my back hurts watching you work so hard! Your hard work is impressive!
It says a lot about a man when animals, women, and children can relax in his presence. It never fails to strike me how good Shawn's vibes must be.
Absolutely amazing effort, and loved how his Golden "helped" - mostly looking like he was wandering when it would finally be play time!
Уважение строителю! Отличный дом.
Беззаботной жизни вам в нем!

This guy knows what he’s doing … absolutely amazing what he just accomplished
This for me is the definition of freedom!
Your cabin is a masterpiece of hard work!💪💫

I'm no longer so proud of the shed I built. Your precision and skill is second to none. You sir deserve a beer.
These are the kind of role models we need if there's to be any hope for the newer generations.

Happy New Year everyone! Shawn to you and your family, as well Cally! You re an inspiration to all of us! You keep our peace in mind and stress away! Blessings
You and Emily should do more cooking segments. I love when you guys collaborate and cooking would be a good show from both of you. 😊
I have enjoyed watching your videos from the start years ago. I wish I would have documented all the cabins I have built over the years. Great job Shawn!
I suspect that you like building a cabin, as much as you do having a cabin. You’re a pretty amazing guy Shawn. 😊

Absolutely fantastic and a testament to your passion, determination and skill.
Truly amazing efforts, accompanied by a strong & continuous hard work, rain & snow never slowed you down, alone with no help from any one, high thumb up for this sole & genius hard work.
Happy and a Healthy New Year Shawn. To you and your family (Callie included of course) So relaxing to watch. Hands down, the best!
Simply amazing what dedication, skills and fortitude to accomplish this. Well done my friend!
Wishing you the very best Mr. Shawn. You need time with your family. Enjoyed watching your progress in building your cabin... awesome ! What dedication. God's speed and good health to you and yours. The best for Callie too. Happy New Year to you and yours Mr. Shawn.
Wow , I am very impressed with this man’s availability to accomplish such a big project by himself. The world needs this type of man around.
Always find these videos so inspiring. Nothing flashy, just hard work and skill, in beautiful countryside. Thanks.
Absolutely incredible! Hoping there are some further videos of what you do on the inside.
I was worried for a second that you'd use a hand drill for the roof too lol. Great job building such an awesome cabin and not getting any injuries!
Beautifully built, this cabin will last for many years. Would have liked to see the inside!
Muito bom. Saudações do Brasil.
The amount of work you have completed in the amount of time whilst not using power tools is simply incredible.
Finally, the day has come. Congratulations! Your skill and the design is always looks neat and professional.
Incredible. What a wonderful feeling it must be to sit by the wood stove, petting your dog, during a blizzard inside a house you built yourself.
Thank you for filming all this . Very inspiring to watch. And I learned a lot.
I wish I had an uncle like this man growing up!
Building a beautiful tree house by yourself is amazing and awesome. It's such a great video.
Unbelievable amount of work he did, so impressed with all his skills. Wow, amazing.
Just in total awe of your strength, determination and tenacity among so many superlatives that can be ascribed to your work which is so physical and hard on the body. You are simply superhuman and that is meant in the best possible way.
What an experience it must have been. Thanks for making the video!
Excellent documentary, Mr. James!
Your best in my opinion. Wishing you and your family a healthy, happy, prosperous new year!
This is incredible, so much work so meticulous and Im in awe!!
