Fun story. There was an upperclassmen in my physics class that didn't like purple Skittles and said they tasted like children's tears. So she would offer them to the table and I would usually eat them. So now I love to say I like eating children's tears everytime I eat purple Skittles.
I think that maybe another thing could be that seeing M&Ms with an assortment of colors provides the participants with comfort knowing that there is a variety despite there being no actual flavor difference among all the colors. Being given only one color of M&Ms makes it seem as though they are bland or all only one flavor and won’t be as satisfying.
For the theory, I think the all green/red m&m’s just made people think about what was going on. Becoming more critical probably made more people second guess if they were truly attracted to someone.
The placebo effect seems like something that should have also warranted a mention. 'Knowing' that the candy is stimulating due to rumors may lead to a placebo effect where it does actually cause you to become stimulated by it.
It is entirely because green=home run=sexy time. The mascots were not around when the ad came out. It was a joke amongst us grade school kids back then. I was about nine years old.
@Olive yes...exactly why they said *for years* and not currently- I believe they were trying to say that the green one came first as the only female of the bunch at the time. not that I've fact-checked this.
My favorite fact about M&Ms. Eddie van Halen would mandate that a bowl of M&Ms be put in the back room of the venue exactly in the middle of the room and there would be NO brown candies, and this is item 295 out of 541 of setting up a typical van Halen concert. If they messed up the candy, then van Halen suspected the pyrotechnics we're neglected too, and would just cancel the concert.
When MatPat was struggling to find a way to say the question of the video without getting demonetized, my first thought for the question was "Are green M&M's an aphrodisiac?" You can say that without getting demonetized, right?
It also depends on favorite colors as well, and whether or not the participants even like M&M's. It could also be as simple as the groups that got only red or only green were disappointed because they didn't get their favorite color of M&M's, whereas the group that got all the main M&M's colors weren't preoccupied with color, just excited to have chocolate candy. Variety is also the spice of life, after all. 😉 Also, everyone knows that the biggest M&M's let-down is that in spite of purple winning the "new M&M color" contest back in 2002 as well as there having been a history of purple M&M's prior and that purple would complete the rainbow, Mars still has yet to standardize it. PS: In my opinion, The blue M&M is the sexiest one, and he also represents the almond M&M's, which is more fancy than the peanut. He apparently also represented raspberry M&M's and dark chocolate M&M's. I don't know about you, but Dark Chocolate Almond Raspberry sounds amazing for a romantic dessert.
Matpat : "In short, Colours with longer wavelengths tend to be more stimulating than those with shorter wavelengths" [7:26] _Hey! I'm sure they have a GREAT personality to go with those short wavelengths !!!_
Great Job except u forgot 1 thing: Chocolate ITSELF is an aphrodisiac. So whoever ate the most candieswhile ranking would b more likely to rank higher.
As a Scotsman, I've never heard of or used any terms similar to the "base system" that is used in America, I've also heard numerous variations on what each base represents... So I might have to say it's a strange American prudism.
In Europe (or at least what i know in Italy) we don't have an equivalent of baseball's bases at all. We don't divide relationships in set phases, things happen and we go along with it :D
My theory: a full bowl of colorful m&ms looks like a rainbow. Rainbows and colorful things are often associated with joy and excitement in our culture. The sight of rainbows might make people inherently lean towards happier more optimistic thoughts thus making the ratings go way up high
Some people: "green m&ms make you excited thanks to an urban legend" Other people: "red m&ms make you excited thanks to color theory and idea representation" Me: "blue m&ms make me happy because I like the color blue and eating them brought me joy as a kid"
Thanks for the video Matt Pat. Honestly, I would definitely like to be part of some of your future experiments. It's always nice to have a larger sample group
I know that if I were in a study, and a bowl of singular-colored candy was presented to me, I would be distracted by trying to figure out what the study was trying to discover, whereas being in a room with a bowl of normal distribution candy colors, I would assume they were just there as a bonus snack to help the subjects focus on the task at hand. Maybe that's a future theory too, "does eating while doing a task help you focus?"
With the only green or only red group, you know it's unnatural and they're probably trying to test whatever effect it has on you. When the only data collected is attractiveness, you're more conscious of your choice and potential evaluation than the all candy or no candy group so you modify them a bit to try to look the best (unconsciously)
I've watched a lot of theory videos and watched Matpat's cutout do a lot of stuff, so when I saw the real-world photo I can help but think it's photoshopped because I'm so used to it being a talking picture on youtube. 😆😆😆
My hypothesis is that the study is useless, when you only have 10 people in each group. I simulated 4 groups with 10 people in excel, where each person had a random natural deviation between 0 - 3 from the norm. So, 1 person might rate a picture 1.5 higher than the rest. The highest difference in deviation between two groups was normally around 0.6 and often higher. This means that if Matt had tested 4 groups of 10 people with no M&M's, there would still be a difference between 0.4 - 1.2, which is the result he got.
A bowl of green ones reminds me of peas, which makes me want to wretch. Rather than one colour, I'm excited to see all the colours mixed. The casings don't indicate different flavours after all.
one thing I think we should point out is that chocolate has long been considered an aphrodisiac but not because they contain or produce phenylethylamine and serotonin, but because how the chocolate melts in one's mouth (so something to look into was if the temperature of the room was the same and possibly making the chocolates more or less 'melty'). Another thing to think about is that in the bowls with one color... it may be that the color didn't stand out. think of it like the difference between camo and blaze orange for hunters... camo is designed to blend in by mimicking their surrounding environment. Since they don't stand out... they are overlooked. Blaze orange (a camo designed to help hunters see other hunters but not so visible to some animals... the orange stood out. In the bowls of all green and red candies... the color didn't stand out. in the mixed bowl those colors can stand out more compared to the cooler and calmer colors... thus possibly having a bigger impact on one's body.
Well, for my particular class in Switzerland, the most compliments are given to the goalkeepers in football (soccer), handball, hockey, and other goalkeeping games, though in a playful way. (It's kinda funny or awkward to me, because the ball always ends up in the most _bizarre_ positions imaginable-) But usually, we build up relationships overtime, and unless one of us is a sport-freak, sports don't really have anything to do with love here!
As a person in Biomedical science, I really enjoy human trials. However as soon as I saw your test groups I knew you were gonna run into issues. If you get those 40k participants this could be an interesting experiment though. I do Biomed in NC so I suppose I could participate or help in some way.
Here in Brazil, even though baseball isn't part of the culture, we still use this metaphor of bases for romantic relations, not that common that everybody says, but still something that exists
Green became my favorite color in the 90s due to being the most rare color in the M&Ms bags I got at the time. So of course in the 2010s, I painted my Tiburon green. Good stuff
Having cousins that live in North Carolina, and going down there to visit every year, I would absolutely love to take part in something like this. Keep the Food Theories going, MatPat!
I find it coincidental that I saw this video yesterday and earlier this afternoon my sister came back from the store with a box of Choco chip cookies and a box of those cookies with M&M on them
I click on these videos both to see the LOOOOOORE but also to see how long it would take for matt to say the forbidden human inaction word and not get demonitized
As a teen of the 80's , the greens one's is something we made up. You should know that popping the tab off a soda can with the tiny little ring intact meant You really wanted to (date ) someone. So you might want to look that one up as well. It didn't make a product sale more it was just something to brake the ice so to speak.
As a german, i can say it took me years to figure out what the whole "bases" thing means in detail, we dont have a really common methaphor here, we get straight to the point !^^
Something I learned very early in my studies: Just because it is significant doesn't mean it's important. You can find significant differences between almost anything if you look hard enough. What's important is to determine if they make a notable difference in the real world.
Food theory idea: can the shape of food effect how its tastes? For example i know something who loves carrots but hates thin chopped carrots, can the shape of how the food is lated out affect wether or not we'll like it?
The funny thing is I saw that commercial when I was younger. My Dad played Softball on weekends. I would give him green M&Ms and he would literally get a home run everytime. So in my head green still equals a baseball home run lol
I raise you the FNAF ARG. Well not everybody in the community's fault it definitely escalated to a very arguably immature level what with the disruption of multiple businesses in that area to a point where Matt Pat had to step in and tell everybody to stop
food theory idea: could eating food you dont like actually make you sick edit: that question sounded better in my head, but now i realize its just dumb so nevermind also i did NOT expect this many likes whatsoever i thought it get like 40 maximum
My favorite was the Dennis Miller commercial. DM : Is it true what they say about the green ones? Green M&m loses her mind. DM : Okay okay, you're not lime.
6:09 Note for anyone wondering why *green* is a "primary color". *Magenta, Green, and Cyan* in are primary colors in light. *Magenta, Yellow, and Blue* in primary colors in ink/colors
we need to talk about all of the m&ms because why are they different colors besides the fact that it makes it more appetizing, when they are all just chocolate
I have to admit if someone invited me to eat M&Ms while rating people's appearance (already weird) I'd be massively distracted by all of the M&Ms being the same color.
I honest to god didn't even know that there was such a thing as the green m&m making you in the mood. Also, as a Dutch person, as far as I know we don't really have things like first and second base like you guys have over in the USA, though I am also 23 and didn't date at all in my high school years so maybe I just missed out on that stuff. Who knows really
I am also 23 and didn't date at all in my high school. Funny that. If only I was Dutch instead of German that would be the perfect trifecta of very relatable comments
I live in slovenia and some ppl use stage some use levels and some months for some reason (like a relationship level depends on how long couples are together)
It would definitely be fuckin awesome if we the viewers got to partake in the experiments. I've been watching this channel for years, before it really got big, and it would be an honor to actually help form these theories 😁
"But first do you see that big red button down there? Does it make you feel some type of emotion deep down?" MatPat just gave the phrase "smash that subscribe button" a whole new meaning.
Swede here! We do consume alot of American media here, so I have heard about the base system. Never really connected it to baseball though, thought it was just a general figure of speech. From what I know we don't have a similar system of our own, we either lightly/jokingly use the base system, or we just say the words 😉
I think it's more likely that we find a variety more exciting for the same reason that most people find a plate full of monochromatic food to be less appealing. My guess would be that we need food from different sources to get different nutrients, so our bodies just find a variety of colors more attractive. I don't know that for sure, but it makes more sense than all red m&m's are suspicious. haha
When I was young I recall reading that British soldiers in WW2 would keep their green Smarties (a candy-coated chocolate like M&Ms) to throw into the grass when they returned home. Why? So their kids would spend the afternoon trying to find them, while dad was inside making up for lost time with mom. Tried to find a reference online, but can't find one. But as M&Ms are inspired by Smarties, the connection is there - assuming some author wasn't lying to me!
I like it how the original photo of MatPat's cutout he uses still looks like it's been photoshopped in
Dude same !
So true!
fr
almost commented that
I think ..that’s the whole point
Fun story. There was an upperclassmen in my physics class that didn't like purple Skittles and said they tasted like children's tears. So she would offer them to the table and I would usually eat them. So now I love to say I like eating children's tears everytime I eat purple Skittles.
@The Court Jester I thought it was vinyl gloves
I always liked Skittles more than M&Ms as a kid because they tasted closer to fruit.
that is my fav kind lol
Hahaha 🤣
Eating children’s tears. Amazing and weird.
When Mat said “Melbun” my Aussie heart soared.
Every Aussie knows you say Melbourne as “Melbun”, and non-Aussies who do it are praised.
What is going on in this reply section these profile pictures are wild (must be victorians)
...wat
He said maccas wrong in a different video tho 😅
@rob stagg Not australian detected
Why hello there fellow Australian

Ayo don’t forget the brown m&m

Its finally here

I feel like everyone's overlooking the most probable fact that the green m&m was the first and only female mascot for years
We got Maya's now
@R 2 H no
It is entirely because green=home run=sexy time.

@Kuza what
@Merrique Lynn that would not surprise me.
Didn’t that start after a groupie died after a venue cut corners?
@earthsteward70 yeah I kind of assumed so
@Agt. Seven that's probably a joke on the van Halen thing
When MatPat was struggling to find a way to say the question of the video without getting demonetized, my first thought for the question was "Are green M&M's an aphrodisiac?" You can say that without getting demonetized, right?
A KZclipr got stroked for saying he liked grapes so i wouldn't take chances
He also played Austin Powers, so why not just say “randy” lol
Yeah same, literally just on my way down to comment lmao
It also depends on favorite colors as well, and whether or not the participants even like M&M's. Not reading all of that
Matpat : "In short, Colours with longer wavelengths tend to be more stimulating than those with shorter wavelengths" [7:26]
_Hey! I'm sure they have a GREAT personality to go with those short wavelengths !!!_
STOP XD
Bro why 😭
Words of champions
Nahhhh 🥴
bro
Great Job except u forgot 1 thing: Chocolate ITSELF is an aphrodisiac. So whoever ate the most candieswhile ranking would b more likely to rank higher.
actually it's not. it only boosts your mood, not your libido.
I love how hard MatPat is trying to keep this family friendly.
@FirePaw X oop
Same umm let's not talk about what he said 💀
Yeah me to
Huge L and His face
yes he is
There comes a time in every boy's life when he gets the talk... about the green M&Ms.
As a Scotsman, I've never heard of or used any terms similar to the "base system" that is used in America, I've also heard numerous variations on what each base represents... So I might have to say it's a strange American prudism.
kzclip.org/video/Lgq4NDh0lnQ/бейне.html
Its finally here
10 100 10000 100000000 ok
In Europe (or at least what i know in Italy) we don't have an equivalent of baseball's bases at all. We don't divide relationships in set phases, things happen and we go along with it :D
More or less in brasil
Same in Ireland
We’ll in England well at least my area when you find your self a good partner you say you scored or something like that
Even us Canadians don't have that, and we are called America 2.0
I heard people saying they "scored a goal" when they had a "home run"
I feel like chocolate being an aphrodisiac probably also plays a factor in this theory.
Can we just appreciate how much research and effort he puts into these☺️ keep up the great work matpat
Food Theory Idea: Are banana peels really slippery? What makes them slippery? Are other fruit peels slippery? Which peel is the slipperiest?
nice
@Хейтер Трендов Wtf is a brain burner
Actually a good idea when I fully read it
Huh i never thought why they were slippery
It would be their last video
My theory: a full bowl of colorful m&ms looks like a rainbow. Rainbows and colorful things are often associated with joy and excitement in our culture. The sight of rainbows might make people inherently lean towards happier more optimistic thoughts thus making the ratings go way up high
Dada
It would make sense, But you Don't have purple m&m and Brown isnt really happy colour
Sounds like a pretty solid theory my guy 👍
Matpat, I swear to god that I watch more Food Theory than Game And Film Theory Combined
I've felt that, I've been watching this channel WAY more often, I guess it's just the real world kind of stuff
I swear I’ve watched every episode of all three 😢
I swear I’ve watched every episode of all three 😢
The intros to every channel matpat has are always the highlight of my day
I love the idea of bringing in the subscribers to help with tests
Matpat: trying very hard not to explain birds and the bees
Also matpat: makes a video about candy mascots being canibals
Can we all appreciate how hard mat pat is trying to not get demonetized
Goat ish is a word I learned in English
@NoobaTrain not a bot
@N. M.E he is not a bot
True
Is it also possible that the reason Green M&Ms put you in a certain mood is that they are made of Dark Chocolate which is an already know aphrodisiac?
MatPat, you trying to be family friendly is my favorite comedy show.
I think at this point, MatPat is on the watchlist for wayyy to many places
Some people: "green m&ms make you excited thanks to an urban legend"
Other people: "red m&ms make you excited thanks to color theory and idea representation"
Me: "blue m&ms make me happy because I like the color blue and eating them brought me joy as a kid"
@岩盤グレムリン and drinking alcoholic drink does the opposite
@Sweet Lucy no
Here finally kzclip.org/video/f_TJ9KMAGQg/бейне.html

I've watched a lot of theory videos and watched Matpat's cutout do a lot of stuff, so when I saw the real-world photo I can help but think it's photoshopped because I'm so used to it being a talking picture on youtube. 😆😆😆
This reminds me of some people that I met once. They were fully convinced that yellow skittles worked as birth control.
I believe it is the chocolate that is the "ingredient" you are looking for. Try the same experiment with Skittles and see if you get the same results.
I've never craved M&M's more than I do now after watching this entire video. Psychology is wild.
I hypothesize that a mixed bowl of color is possibly more "fun" thus leading to a higher rating than just a plain color, no matter what color that is
I was thinking similarly. I would like to see the results of some tests.
here is the full clip no
Ye
My hypothesis is that the study is useless, when you only have 10 people in each group. I was thinking about that too. Not fun, but rather more exciting for the eyes to see and enjoy the different colours
The real question is what Mat’s Google searches looked like after this 😂
The green m&m 💀
@RudeBeans but she, he, or whatever pronouns they go by has NotFound in the username which is commonly used in Dream SMP member usernames.
@RudeBeans well in some cases
@Beeker 🗸 if you think about it, Somebody with a dream pfp doesn’t make them a dream Stan.
@Sky'sInfamous yeah...
Food theory is my favorite of your channels. It’s what I first saw and how I got hooked ❤️
Green became my favorite color in the 90s due to being the most rare color in the M&Ms bags I got at the time. So of course in the 2010s, I painted my Tiburon green. Good stuff

I think the reason why the mix bowl was the best was the smell, smell makes a big difference in all relationships
12:21 honestly I think it’s because many bright colors can make someone happier instead of one color which feels more bland and neutral
As a german, i can say it took me years to figure out what the whole "bases" thing means in detail, we dont have a really common methaphor here, we get straight to the point !^^
As a fellow european,i can agree
We do the exact same thing in Canada 🇨🇦 just straight to the point
Same, ich hab ewig gebraucht bis ich das gecheckt habe.
Hi I'm also from Germany!
It’s used during adolescence to describe what level you hit it. On the other hand, Adults are straight forward.
Sounds like that would go with the gummy bear episode that sight does play into how things taste
The funny thing is I saw that commercial when I was younger. My Dad played Softball on weekends. I would give him green M&Ms and he would literally get a home run everytime. So in my head green still equals a baseball home run lol
You know, I'd love to be in a food theory quota of people getting those free candies!!! I already do some surveys anyway, so that fits well for me.
4:46 dear god that aged like milk
¿The Kanye thing? Yeah, it's gone even worse
As an European, no, we don’t have similar things like “the first base” to indicate that kind of things. We are more straightforward lmao
in england we have rounders
@xXRealXx lol, you're good. Yeah, not the type of straight I'm talking about.
Literally nobody uses the first base stuff anymore anyway ☠️
I didn't know there was this myth but I always sort the m&m by color
My favourite part of all these episodes is the start because of the cool little animations that are funny
The things I’d give to see matpats search history while making these videos 💀
I don't know why but the bit about being suspicious about a cup of M&M's of the same color sent me laughing.
I would honestly love to be a test subject. I love science, KZclip, and matpat’s videos. And I’d enough to understand a NDA 😂
MatPat keeping things family friendly even if he has a mature enough audience by this point.
@KBTV Studios don't be surprised
@Samir Belica finally someone just said it, we all want da money
For the money, man. For the money.
I raise you the FNAF ARG. Well not everybody in the community's fault it definitely escalated to a very arguably immature level what with the disruption of multiple businesses in that area to a point where Matt Pat had to step in and tell everybody to stop
This is youtube's fault tbh
I would be totally down to participate in a control group for science
I'd volunteer in a heartbeat to be a guinea pig for MatPat!
I want to be in studies! This was a well done video!
Science Theory! That's gotta be the new channel Mat Pat was talking about on the power wash simulator with Markiplier! Or at least I hope it is!
Man if i could participate in one of these studies I'd be so happy
food theory idea: could eating food you dont like actually make you sick
edit: that question sounded better in my head, but now i realize its just dumb so nevermind
also i did NOT expect this many likes whatsoever i thought it get like 40 maximum
Good Idea
Maybe you don’t like it because it makes you sick
Fr
Yes, it does I tested it
My favorite was the Dennis Miller commercial.

@Veeva no he doesn't own an mnm but theres memes where they put Dr.phils face over a green mnm I don't know why it exists but hey it exist
@antobono 64 excuse me, Dr. Phil one? Like the dude without a license who has a TV show, that dude? He has an M&M?
I live in slovenia and some ppl use stage some use levels and some months for some reason (like a relationship level depends on how long couples are together)
Food theory idea: everyone says ketchup is sugary as heck, but what truly is the sweetest condiment and how does it affect how people like them?
As I remember it, it was an urban legend that M&M’s marketing ran with.
8:28 LMAO. I don't know why I find this so funny. Especially the last scene. Love it.
I love experiments like this, took a lot of psych in college and it’s always peaked my interest. Would love to help participate in studies!
I’ve never gotten “in the mood” eating green M&Ms.
I’d say MatPat did quite a great job with the topic of procreation while tiptoeing around the community guidelines.
He has a way with words my friends
its me again
@Enigmaniac 🤣🤣 I was like "a bot actually commented??"
WAHO
Another try not to get age restricted moment.
I think the veriety of colors makes it look more colorful and for some reason it feels better to eat and look at it!
As an Australian, I’d love to be part of any experiment The Theorists do :D
My mom made me and my sister stop eating red m&ms for a year and it was like contraband that we secretly ate at friends houses.
It would definitely be fuckin awesome if we the viewers got to partake in the experiments. I've been watching this channel for years, before it really got big, and it would be an honor to actually help form these theories 😁
Fun fact: there is a hilarious commercial where a guy asks green the question and her reaction is hilarious
"But first do you see that big red button down there? Does it make you feel some type of emotion deep down?"
MatPat just gave the phrase "smash that subscribe button" a whole new meaning.
You had 666 likes and I didn't want to ruin it but I had to. I'm sorry
smash the like button
😭no...
Not on this video
That sounds awesome! I would love to be a part of a experiment for the channel!
I don't know that for sure, but it makes more sense than all red m&m's are suspicious. haha
One thing I learned from this episode is that there's a surprising amount of studies on what is and what isn't an aphrodisiac
12:37 my theory is that the red and green are stimulating as a more unique color but not alone (in this candy specific situation anyway)
@Latunen yes
@Lou🍳 no
@rollanddev Read my post until the end
Got a source on that? Google's not turning up anything...
this is the first time in my entire world that y european ears heard stages of love be associated with a type of sport. I am actually amazed
I would loooove to participate in some of these food experiments. Interesting unprofessionalism and all XDDDDD
You should do stuff online to test reactions from people all over the world, not just U.S.
Found it funny, today I learned what double blind research is and it’s the day I watch this episode and hear it and actually understand it
