@Britt Scott I just ask because I felt the tone and level of violence for this movie was just find. I also would say their are so many good PG 13 horrors that it’s good to get away from some movies that are just nasty and mean spirited for the sake of it!
@4411825 One reason is they sell more DVDs because fans of the film can see an edgier version that wasn't edited to fit into a PG-13 rating. I saw somewhere that their is a version of Megan that is darker and more violent ,but they cut out those parts to get a PG-13 rating.
They should have considered making an R-rated version of the film as an option when you buy the DVD . Some other movies have theatrical version and unrated version of film as options on DVD.
There’s actually an R rated extended cut that’s supposed to come out for streaming platforms, and its said to be far more violent and gory. I’m definitely interested in seeing that version too :)
Yes, the home video version will have 2 cuts of the movie packaged together. Not sure if the digital will be sold the same way. I'll be buying the digital R or NR version.
I saw this movie in a full packed theater. For a January release, it was surprisingly way better than I expected. And it reminds me how much I miss campy horror like this and I'm glad James Wan and Blumhouse are bringing back this type of horror movie that's self aware and doesn't take itself too seriously
Wah ada di comment sini, ini film genrenya generik, tapi fun bgt ahhahah lawak dan creepy nya berasa bgt seruuuu, film yg gak usah mikir berat dan fun bgt sih inii
It was the best theater Experience I'd had in YEARS. Everyone was laughing and screaming for 80% of the duration of the film. Genuine laughs and screams the whole time.
Pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this movie! I went on a whim by myself this afternoon since I was off work early and I had fun. Someone else in my row was there solo and I felt like we were kindred spirits laughing at all the same parts. Great soundtrack too.
Saw this with a 75% full theater.! We all had a good time. Definitely good scary horror in terms of a good way with technology. Love how Megan is the way she looks how she sounds and she walks definitely excited for the sequel if they make it one 😍😍
I got the campy fun I wanted but I was surprised by the social commentary. Relying on high tech solutions when the low tech solution is effective enough. Dealing with grief and unwanted parenthood... There was a part of the movie that was almost mean spirited funny. SPOILERS: When Cady breaks down during the exhibit and she and M3GAN have this touching scene, I actually got a little teary eyed. But then they cut to the investors comically wiping tears from their eyes. I laughed but then was also embarrassed because the moment worked on me too. It was great 🤣
I saw it on a Sunday evening with 6 people in the theater (2nd to last showing of the day) and really enjoyed it. I never looked at the rating and assumed it was an R. There really was not much violence in the movie, it was off camera or cut. All in all, fun flick! Id go see a sequel.
I just want to take a moment to appreciate the framed MoviePass card in the background. Also, yea the film is as good as it is bad, but never tries hard enough toward being really good or really bad. Happy New Year, Dan!
Dan’s unique style of almost dry sarcastic wit makes him my favorite solo reviewer on KZclip. He could definitely write for comedy if he gets the opportunity.
@Lobo Mella yeah, but there are just that more many single reviewers. to the point that its weird that he phrased it as "solo" reviewer. The fact that its more common, he should mention "team reviewers" when thats the case. It's just odd as helll to mention solo reviewer. It be like if I went to someone's channel and was like "Damn, your a dope ass solo youtuber". Like what?
Yup. There is also Double Toasted, The Movie Couple, GetJaby, The Reel Rejects. I put them in a different category cause it’s easier to be funny when playing off with someone else.
I understand they had to re-shoot some scenes to get the PG13 rating since it was actually indented to be R. It's a shame, but that's the way studios work. That being said, I did LOVE this film, I had not watched any of the trailers and had barely seen the poster for it, so I was happy when the film goes bunkers. Great start for 2023!!!
Oh, I actually like the last act least. It’s the “final girl” act troupe - the last survivor stands her ground and fight back. I like the set up - the humor and horror and social commentary .
You really nailed down what I felt about the movie, I didn’t watch any trailers but I saw the silly dance from the trailer on Twitter and I kinda wrote it off. But as the hype built up I decided to go watch and really really liked it! I knew it would be a little cheesy based of the things I was seeing about it online but I really think not watching any of the marketing of the movie aided in my experience. And to the point of it being pg-13, I didn’t even realize it wasn’t R but after you said that it makes sense. I could feel it pushing it’s rating as much as it could but if it had been able to go a little further, it would’ve been even better!
Good review! Agreed 💯. I’m ready for 2 M3gan 2 Furious. Hopefully they learn with the next one that M3gan is the star and to give her more screen time.
How did you get through the whole review without crediting the actual star? I mean the girl who plays M3gan. She's the reason the doll is so creepy and weird, she deserves kudos. Also, according to Grace from Beyondthetrailer, there IS an R-rated cut of this film, and it will be available when it goes to streaming. They released this version for theatres because it tested a little better than the R version with audiences.
Amie Donald, and yes she did an amazing job. Plus she's a gymnast and dancer, and did most of her own stunts, including the running on all fours bit, which was 100% real.
The actress who plays Katie did a wonderful job! She displayed lots of different emotions and her performance is really believable. Best child actor performance I’ve seen in a while ^^
LOL... One of my favorite openings to a review ever -- as always, I clicked for the honest and solid film analysis but it's the 16 second roasting of a particular airline that left me ticked pink.
I agree with Dan: I didn't expect much from this movie, but I was pleasantly surprised early on at how good it was. It has some dark (and silly) humor, effective family drama moments, and M3GAN is suitably creepy. But the PG-13 definitely held the movie back. I kept waiting for things to kick into high gear, but it never did. Better than I expected, but just missed being a really good movie.
Just came back from the movie. So good! The best thing is Megan's design. The movie let you know it's a doll. But the way it look at you, the way it blinks, the way it rolls its eyes, you feel there is a soul in there. And then the next moment you are being reminded that it's all part of the programmimg. But is it?? It's the constant uncertainity of the doll's actions that give it the creeps. The whole time in my mind, Megan is just a girl's toy doll__ MILITARY GRADE.
I watched it earlier today. As I was on my way to the theater I was feeling butterflies in my stomach as if I was on my way to meet a real celebrity in person 😄. With that being said, the duration of this movie felt so so short. I wanted the story about this girl to be longer. Instead of displaying short clips about all the adventures they use to have together. Also, the voice for the robot mede it look so unreal, literally. They should have made her sound what a real android sounds like. and last but not least, that little dance just don't fit in with the movie, why would she show him such a great dance if she's about to slaughter him, 🤔 awkward? It was such a great dance that I wish they could have made it longer, because they cut a clip of the original dance move but it just didn't fit in. Katie (Violet McGraw) is among my favorite actresses!
Finally a good movie to start off January! M3gan to me was a surprise, and I enjoyed it a lot! Not an Oscar winning masterpiece by any stretch, but a hell of a good time at the theater! It’s aware of what it is, and I love it for that. I recommend seeing it with a large group :) my theater had a blast with it
Interesting 🤔 It seems like Dan is saying that Chuckie might do 'MEGAN' better. As a matter of fact, I think the recent reboot of 'Child's Play' (the one with Aubrey Plaza) deals with one the same themes as 'MEGAN', the whole "child protector" thing.
I just got back from seeing M3gan and I really liked it. To me, it gave us exactly what was promised. I don't personally feel that an R rating would have made much of a difference and I kind of liked them having to be more creative about the deaths - it makes sense for a movie about a doll and a nine year old to be PG-13 to me. I went for the camp and that's what I got.
I saw _M3GAN_ this afternoon and _loved_ it, particularly its mega dark humour...! Looper did a video that _ME3GAN _*_had_* been rated R, but the director did reshoots, to dial it back a lot, making it (not only PG-13, but) a lot creepier.
When Dan talked about the trailer i thought he is going to discuss whether the movie can be sued or not for not delivering what it promised. That could be a segment in each review.
I think this is the opposite case…. Hahaha…. The trailer clips were exactly from the movie and nothing more. People were hoping for bloodier scenes that never happened.
Haven't seen it yet, releasing here in India on 13th. But I have heard they brought it down from R to PG-13 because later test screenings scored better, which could limit some potential which is the only thing bugging badly about this movie. Apparently, R rated version will be available online. Sigh...
Pretty good, cautious endorsement. You're fast becoming among my favorite reviewers, Dan. Very balanced and fair take, you've convinced me to watch it while still tempering my expectations.
I believe I heard they filmed a R-rated as well as the PG-13 version. When this is released physically, we may have an option to view the alternate cut. I could be wrong, though.
The doll was on point, it looked real and robotic at the same time, so it was very effective. The rest of the movie left me with questions. I think I just have to accept the fact that movie characters will never react the way us audiences viewers would. Actions and reactions are always nonrealistic and in most cases frustrating to watch. When you're lying on the floor, facing death, you cover your vital organs as defense, its just natural. You don't expose yourself leaving your face and body exposed. Overall, the doll was on point but the movie was a good 90s movie in my opinion. In 2023 I'd expect something more than another killer doll movie
This movie was excellent. I barely had anyone in my theater but it was still more fun having other people laughing at all the ridiculous stuff going on. It was a bit weird she went straight to murder since she was so empathetic during her internal reveal. That since did choke me up though.
I feel like a lot of trailer's only exist to get people to buy cinema tickets, once that's accomplished and they have your money they don't really care whether or not you had a good time at the cinema. thus they have no problem to show all the good moments or even the whole plot in trailers.
I think it works as as a parody/satire like Robocop - when it is laughing at itself and doesn’t take itself too seriously. This PG horror lite is better than R rated horror some people are looking for. It’s easy to do the horror porn, and there are many movies like that out there already - like Terrifier 2. This could be gateway horror movie for younger kids - 11 to 15 that is not ready for the hard R slasher or Conjuring stuff. I wish they had more humor and address issues with AI and kids stuck with their devices. But overall, it is alight and fun movie. I’m okay not having the graphic violence.
Finally a review with some taste! While there were some cool/funny things about this film, I’m concerned with the overwhelming praise by the KZclip Movie Review crowd for mediocrity 👎🏼
It is a good film - and much better than the schlocky horror films that come out in January. It sounds like Dan was a little disappointed that it wasn't schlockier!

I see a trailer, they say “coming in 163 months”… I add it to my watch list and try to avoid any more of those trailers moving. M3GAN was a pleasant surprise
"If you're going for the promise of more crazy moments... 90% of the wackiest moments of the movie have already been seen..." The biggest example of this that I remember is from Mel Brooks' 1981 movie "History of the World, Part 1". The trailer for that movie showed the majority of the funniest moments. That movie is still worth watching, but for heaven's sake, DON'T WATCH THE TRAILER!!!
I have my limits with viral marketings, when they did that stunt during a football game I'm just not going to see it in theaters, regardless of the reviews
What I find most interesting about this movie is the fact that the creator of Megan (in the movie) is "unaware" while the created one (Megan) is becoming "aware." This speaks volumes.
Props to the movie reviewers (not this one) who understand that horror and bloodlust are in fact separate things, and that all horror films do not need to be R rated. It's deeply concerning that after the mass shootings, blood sports and increased general violence, that people are actually still CLAMOURING for MORE blood from their entertainment. Why are you LIKE this?😖
I didn't like it,the trailer was the best part. I definitely agree. If it was rated R, they definitely could really unleash M3gan. Malignant had my expectations up.
I find some of these comments interesting because I didn’t find it “campy” at all. What’s ridiculous about this (even Gemma’s boss is a direct reflection of Corporate America) the premise is damn near the world we live in now. We’re already letting streaming services raise children; they have no interaction with other kids today, technology is raising children today and not fully putting precaution measures into M3Gan is absolutely something that would happen. So it’s… “interesting” to me how people are interpreting the message of this film… especially late Millennials and Gen z 🤔
Damn I feel like I watched a totally different movie than everyone else. It was your typical BH movie with the same tired old horror tropes. I don’t get it, it’s mid at best
First off, obviously everyone knew it was a movie hence the tic tic dances etc but this movie failed when it could of been so much better!!! This was catered for kids and that’s where they went wrong from going rated R to pg -13 🤦🏻♂️ there was only 4 deaths in this movie like tf
You shoot M3gan down, but she won't fall. She is titanium.
I love that they did that and didn't feel they needed to reiterate rub in the joke
Loved that M3GAN embraced the laughs more than the scares. I agree that an R-rated version would have elevated even more
@Britt Scott I just ask because I felt the tone and level of violence for this movie was just find. I also would say their are so many good PG 13 horrors that it’s good to get away from some movies that are just nasty and mean spirited for the sake of it!

M3gan was crazy but campy and I was genuinely surprised at how entertaining this was.

it's just slightly more violent. nothing too crazy.
Yes, the home video version will have 2 cuts of the movie packaged together. Not sure if the digital will be sold the same way. I'll be buying the digital R or NR version.
Omg really!? Where.dis you hear that?
@Aria Ravenlock not sure yet, but there’s rumors the R rated version is gonna be out sometime while it’s still in theaters

@ArmouredGhoul fine bro, best movie of 2023 so far. its only day 7 of 2023.
Instant classic.
Wah ada di comment sini, ini film genrenya generik, tapi fun bgt ahhahah lawak dan creepy nya berasa bgt seruuuu, film yg gak usah mikir berat dan fun bgt sih inii
@WolveWick Your opinion is meh
watch the Director first movie Housebound it was also horror comedy.
It was the best theater Experience I'd had in YEARS. Everyone was laughing and screaming for 80% of the duration of the film. Genuine laughs and screams the whole time.

the magic of the movie right there

@Zeke's Movies there are plenty of "team reviewers" such as Red Letter Media, the Aussies at Mr. Sunday Movies or Fandom sometimes 😊
"solo" reviewer? What? most people review by themselves
The story structure is first rate - up to the mid point is almost perfect setup. Second half of act two keeps the steam and act three hits its marks.
Oh, I actually like the last act least. It’s the “final girl” act troupe - the last survivor stands her ground and fight back. I like the set up - the humor and horror and social commentary .
That shade for Southwest was great. I nearly fell off my chair laughing so hard.
You really nailed down what I felt about the movie, I didn’t watch any trailers but I saw the silly dance from the trailer on Twitter and I kinda wrote it off. Dan's official KZclip plaque really ties the room together.
Good review! Agreed 💯. I’m ready for 2 M3gan 2 Furious. Hopefully they learn with the next one that M3gan is the star and to give her more screen time.

Jojo rabbit kid
I liked the Black Phone actress more… the scene with his dad hitting her.
It may just be marketing-speak, but I think the director said that the PG-13 cut tested better with audiences than the R-rated cut.
LOL... One of my favorite openings to a review ever -- as always, I clicked for the honest and solid film analysis but it's the 16 second roasting of a particular airline that left me ticked pink.

Looks like a fun movie. Also enjoyed the airline commercial at the opening of this video...very topical.

I've already seen M3gan twice, love it so much.

Loved this movie 👍
I believe I heard they filmed a R-rated as well as the PG-13 version. When this is released physically, we may have an option to view the alternate cut. I could be wrong, though.

Not going to see it in a theater, but I will watch it.
Hey Dan, i've heard there will be a "R" rated version that comes to streaming in a few months.
I think them not going to far with the kills made it better
This movie was excellent. I barely had anyone in my theater but it was still more fun having other people laughing at all the ridiculous stuff going on. It was a bit weird she went straight to murder since she was so empathetic during her internal reveal. That since did choke me up though.
I feel like a lot of trailer's only exist to get people to buy cinema tickets, once that's accomplished and they have your money they don't really care whether or not you had a good time at the cinema. thus they have no problem to show all the good moments or even the whole plot in trailers.

Finally a review with some taste! While there were some cool/funny things about this film, I’m concerned with the overwhelming praise by the KZclip Movie Review crowd for mediocrity 👎🏼
Thank you for the review! I hope you had a happy birthday!
Unrated version is coming, I hear. Especially since it has turned out to be a hit.
i’m going to watch it in about 2 hours & my theater is sold out.. very surprising!
It is a good film - and much better than the schlocky horror films that come out in January. It sounds like Dan was a little disappointed that it wasn't schlockier!
I wish they would release an R rates version. Because know it existed before Tiktok lost it.
It’s ironic because the most evil character in M3GAN (M3GAN) was also the most likable. Everyone else were all garbage humans including the little girl.
Not sure if M3GAN is most likable, but she was the most loyal to her directives. The girl was a brat, but she’s been through a lot.
I hope they make enough MEGAN-films to one day call it M364N!
Can't wait to see on streaming
M3GAN can make you laugh, she can be adorable, she can make you shed a tear and warm your heart, and she can also make you sh*t yourself silly with fear. Just don’t mess with her bestie or she’ll hypnotize you with her TikTok powers and go for that machete 😈
I see a trailer, they say “coming in 163 months”… I add it to my watch list and try to avoid any more of those trailers moving. M3GAN was a pleasant surprise
I was meh on this after the ridiculously silly trailer, but I'm thinking this movie might be fun to see in a theater with other people.
As you say, I thought they could have gone bigger, but it is a good time
I hope this gets sequels purely for the naming convention we'll get (a la 2 fast 2 furious)
So would that make the next one MEG4N? With a follow up of ME5AN?
So if I haven’t seen the trailers I’ll be in for a treat
Saw it last night. Had a good time.
Wait M3GAN is a movie?! I thought it was just a new dance trending off TikTok!
Southwest...finally a KZclip sponsorship that isn't a VPN or a Lordship in a box. 😆😆😆
I think when it goes to dvd there will be a unrated cut that will show it.
It's not the best thing I ever seen but definitely entertaining
Everyone forgets The Invisible Man came out in january
The last key was far better than people say.
There is supposed to be an r-rate version for streaming, as I read somewhere else.
There’s some interesting parallels in the movie
Megan 2.0 is set for release in January 2025 👏👏👏👏
Props to the movie reviewers (not this one) who understand that horror and bloodlust are in fact separate things, and that all horror films do not need to be R rated.
It's deeply concerning that after the mass shootings, blood sports and increased general violence, that people are actually still CLAMOURING for MORE blood from their entertainment. Why are you LIKE this?😖
Dang, I didn’t realize this is a PG-13 movie
Thanks ...i enjoyed it. The R would of been better.. The pulling off the ear was a classic
Great video Dan!
I love your Southwest burns. Lol
The movie is amazing
I didn't like it,the trailer was the best part. I definitely agree. If it was rated R, they definitely could really unleash M3gan. Malignant had my expectations up.
Who is the true villain?
Is it M3gan??
Or is it the incredibly irresponsible adult character, Gemma???
@Unboxing Alyss She also ended up listening to advice and try to improve herself.
neither are villains
I had the same thoughts throughout the first two thirds of the movie!
Her motives were selfish, but all of a sudden, she became a parent with no training, or time to plan. She honestly did far better than I would have.
M3gan is fun movie, full creepy scem but sometime its fun hahahah, great performan for both woman role and m3gan
Honestly, the trailer never did it for me, especially that dancing scene, but I keep hearing good things, so I’ll give it a shot this weekend.
As usual, this film isn't out in Ireland yet, :c
I find some of these comments interesting because I didn’t find it “campy” at all. What’s ridiculous about this (even Gemma’s boss is a direct reflection of Corporate America) the premise is damn near the world we live in now. We’re already letting streaming services raise children; they have no interaction with other kids today, technology is raising children today and not fully putting precaution measures into M3Gan is absolutely something that would happen. So it’s… “interesting” to me how people are interpreting the message of this film… especially late Millennials and Gen z 🤔
Infinity Pool trailers 2023 release the only thing better than the addictive M3gan trailers.
Just realized Megan was supposed to be a robot like yesterday
Uncanny Valley, not so much......
How does it compare to Clara and the Sun?
PG-13 OMG! 😔 Hard R Rated version for Streaming and Physical, oh yeah, I'm there😁👍
I m gonna see it soon see what I think of it
Damn I feel like I watched a totally different movie than everyone else. It was your typical BH movie with the same tired old horror tropes. I don’t get it, it’s mid at best
Nice Southwest Airlines dig! ✈️
Chucky meets Annabel ft terminator (sort of)
First off, obviously everyone knew it was a movie hence the tic tic dances etc but this movie failed when it could of been so much better!!! This was catered for kids and that’s where they went wrong from going rated R to pg -13 🤦🏻♂️ there was only 4 deaths in this movie like tf
