Great project! Im a landscape contractor in San Francisco California and we're always demoing and throwing away so much good material, it makes me feel so guilty. I've been thinking for a while to recycle all that and use it, sell it or even give it away to people doing these kind of creative projects. I will be reaching out to people like you soon to talk more and invite you over to see what we can build together. Hitting the subscribe button now. Thanks for sharing, this is inspiring!
That is beautiful. Whenever I'm wondering how to proceed with our container tiny house, if we're doing it right, I look for videos of how others are doing it and this video is just cool. Beautifully. It gives me the strength to keep going and not worry about whether everything is perfect. You are awesome. Thank you.
This is great! I also like the look of the interior - the reclaimed wood makes it almost look like it's an old wood shed - especially from the inside! Good work! Thanks for sharing. =)
Awesome build! Love the honesty and how you included some of the pitfalls along with showcasing what a can-do attitude can achieve. Thank you for sharing.
Love shipping, love containers. So, this is the perfect project. Nice to see someone who does NOT know everything beforehand. I watch a lot of this stuff and started to question my existence.
Hey cool video! Thanks for the full breakdown. I might've missed it but did you mention anything about the foundation? Are concrete blocks all you need for a container house of this size? Aside from the potential permits needed... Do you know at what size you'd have to start digging and doing that whole headache of foundation from a purely structural stability standpoint?
I've thought a lot about insulation for a shipping container. I know part of the reason to build in a container is the obvious aesthetic of the container itself. I'd like to retire to Mexico and insulation would be key not to cook inside it once it is done. If you were to put some framing on the outside of the container using the full 4 or 6 inch depth, you could use a spray foam to insulate it from the outside. This would allow you to use the small framing on the inside to keep as much inside space as possible. Then the space in the inside framing could be used for all the electrical and piping. Another option is to find a 10' wide container. Just a thought! Thanks for sharing your experience!
While still watching this, I had a thought, would it be beneficial to design those installed windows with some kind of shock absorbing material and/or covers to close them off so that the entire build can be moved without them breaking? Since it is a shipping container, it is already designed to be transported. I feel like utilizing this built in feature of the container, into the build could open up possibilities for the owner for future changes in their life like moving. Just a thought.
New Subscriber....... Very cool build, great narration and just enough details...... cost of build is very helpful and what everybody else seems to always leave out on youtube Those salvage materials would be amazing to find these days, with the big box store prices being through the roof! I started buying and selling shipping containers 6 months back and i can't believe what i pay for them and even crazier what they go for once you tow them inland away from any port! We will be building out our 40 acre off-grid property with shipping containers, shipping containers and more shipping containers......
Nice work ! Few details, if I may.... Next time use 7" worm drive carpenter's Skill saw with metal blade to cut through the wall of the container. It cuts as easy as cutting through wood. Faster and you end up with straight cut. Also, steel-clad pre-hung double door at HD run about $600.00 (by Masonite). You save your self so much time and energy installing them. Even if you have to pay $1K for the door as you mentioned - still, absolutely worth it. As far as wall insulation, I would use spray foam insulation for such a narrow wall. Close Cell foam insulation gives you about R-6 per inch of Thermal Protection. So with the perforations in the walls, you could get R-9 to R-13 of Thermal value out of it. Lastly, have you consider metal studs for framing? You can get them in 2 1/2" and they are very sturdy, as well as they will give you more space for insulation. Keep it up !
Thank you! Awesome comment. I just tried a metal skilsaw blade without much luck but let me go back to it…it’s funny, I was just working on a vid saying I’ve about had it with salvage doors. Too much work. And I think I’m in the spray foam game from here on out.
looks great brother! i just finished my barn build ( tho 20 footers) 9500 painted and delivered ,crazy, 20 x 20 wood build in the middle w/18 ft. peak monitor barn style what a challenge and i loved the build .. always checking out other builders projects.. ...happy trails always....
I used an electric sander, like you show in the video, to strip the paint from my school bus. For the heavier paint areas like the stickers you show, I just used a heavier grit sandpaper.
First-time viewer - really a great job. You may already be doing this - I use Habitat for Humanity and other charity support stores to stock up on building supplies - which saved me thousands of dollars. Again, a nice job of videoing and I like how you explain things are you go along working. Thanks for going the extra mile.
@The Coyote Lab just wanted to add that besides Habitat for Humanity's ReStore there are also architecture salvage stores. A lot of times they reclaim materials that are in old buildings and houses that are being torn down. If I knew where you are located, I could research where one is near you. Good luck!
@The Coyote Lab Doors, windows, toilets - you name it they have it. Also electrical supplies and boxes of nails, something that I had not thought of when first buying materials to use in my "tiny home". Oh, they also sell paint.... for a couple of dollars a can. The bigger the Habitat store the more things you will find.
First time viewer, just loved how so real you were totally enjoyed it I too is in the process of doing my build an also looking for salvage materials needed to see all you ups and downs thanks for sharing 👏
Fantastic build 💯 and great location on the lake. The sofa on the boat 😂 brought back memories of me moving things 😂 Great video, thank you for sharing 💯💜🌟💜💯
I don’t think so…it’s hot and dry here so I think I should be good. I did have another container rust on the roof, so I definitely advise painting the roof with elastomeric
Hello, you had an issue with door frame because you was doing it wrong. You need to remove doors from frame, completely and perfectly straight attach the side of the door frame with door hinge, attach one top point of opposite side of the door frame, only then install doors, align the doors and finish attaching opposite side of the door frame. Everything else is quite well done.
Nice i thought to build the same way like yours as well, but with more a contemporary black window frames and a bifold glass door as a man cave hang out spot for the boys with a big enough deck and firepit in my back yard..
David, good question. My neighbors have. I heard it got harder to get fire insurance this summer with sever drought and lots of fires. I haven’t looked into it but I might.
Wow!!! I am a new follower of your channel. I also want to do something like this. There is one thing I am afraid of. Can something that has been transported in this container when it used make a person sick afterwards? Greetings from Sweden
You did a great job! I want to let you know I don’t mean this in a judgmental way at all, but you aren’t supposed use that type of insulation in a container, because since there is a gap in between it and the metal walls, condensation will form and mold your interior siding. The best insulation to use is small cell spray foam insulation because that closes any gap between the wall and your siding/drywall. I would just keep an eye out for mold. Again I don’t mean this in a judgey, just looking out for your safety and eventually your wallet.
@The Coyote Lab 😊! I know it’s wild! We had no idea, until our walls got all moldy and rotted. Luckily our container was basically a “she shed”, art studio type of space and it was only a 10 ft container, but it was still a mess having to redo it. For reference, it started molding about 2 years after we made it. I wish you the bestest of luck!!! 😊
Thank you!! Great comment, i really appreciate it. It’s crazy that containers “sweat”…cell spray was out of budget, so we’ll see how things go with this stuff. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out.

Hey there, Jenny here... So my husband and I wanna go tiny bit he's very skeptical about shipping container homes bc of concerns over rust and living in AZ he's concerned about instruction with it being metal as far as heat magnet.... Do you have any toys on taking care of those concerns?
@The Coyote Lab FYI I made the mistake once as well. House used to be white but the whole neighborhood started to go tan and brown etc so I decided to go with an adobe color. Is prettier but I noticed that the house is at a minimum 5 to 10° hotter during the summer time. It absorbs the heat rather than deflecting it. As soon as I can afford to I'm going to repaint the house in White. It might be boring but it does make a difference
Wow I love washing your channel I like the way build your tiny house ,you use the salvage material, it's amazing very practical , functional , I love shipping container home , pls check shipping container homes thanks god bless
Hi MattI'm Ms. J ~ I am new to your channel and I love it so far. I have been entertaining the idea of a Container Tiny Home. After watching your video I'm convinced this is what I want. I have a million questions bouncing around in my head. I promise NOT to ask my questions all at once🤣 First question where do I start looking for a container? Building out container tiny homes, is this something you do fulltime? I am relocating back to California the end of July 2023. Any information you can help me with would be greatly appreciated. BTW - your Container Tiny Home looked amazing. Big Thumbs Up to your Dad for making his KZclip debut👍🏽👍🏽. I agree with your wifey, the different colors of wood looks awesome. Looking forward to hearing from you Matt. Be Blessed and Happy New Year. Ms. J
@The Coyote Lab Thanks for the info Matt. I will definitely checkout Facebook Market Place. Your Pool and Hot Tub turned out amazing. Be Blessed and Keep Living your Best Life.😊Ms J
Hi ms j! Best deals on containers is Facebook marketplace. If that doesn’t work, there are companies in every city that sell containers. This is my first one. Just a hobby.
I love your humor! I hope you cleaned that sofa before you sat on it! It might have been out on the street because of BED BUGS or fleas! LMAO! I hate that someone broke into your container! I had that happen to a place I was refurbishing.
I'm curious in how you attached the 2x3s to the walls. Did you drill into the container itself into the outside? Maybe glue it the metal or cut it exact and wedge it in. I've been trying to think what is the best way to put a wall into a container. This is something I will be doing soon.
Hey Silly, forget about the gluten & glue get your 2/4s lay them out and start framing within the container. You the cutting right, but use screw gun to Attach. No Wedgesss Unless Your Going To Dance 💃 For Us All. What’s going to be going on inside that Container Of Your’s Anyways ??? A Little Midnight Dancing ??? 👮♀️👮♀️Watch it 👧 girlfriend, this is a family channel now.
Great question. The wood frame is attached with wood to metal screws to the metal window frames I made, which are welded to the container. It survived a long transport and a trip across the lake, so I think it’s a pretty good method!
When will people think outside the box, I used 3" top-hat purlin on the outside with 3" insulation batts and covered with metal roofing material, then 1/8" ply on the inside which gave me an extra 8" of internal space, I also built steel trusses with insulation and steel roofing, as I am not in a snow area I fitted spouting and a tank to catch rain water
Ok, this is SOOOO random but you slightly sound like Kronk from emperors new groove! 😂 Otherwise, thank you for this awesome video, incredibly informative!
So how do you handle a water supply, sewer and electrical hookups? I assume there is probably building restrictions that would not allow this type living.
No restrictions! Ain’t that great? There is electricity which I now have hooked up. We pump water from the lake and bring drinking water over. Most folks do septic since there is now sewer. I’ll post a video about some of that soon.
In Germany I was happy to have witness a wildbore run to get to his mate at full tilt run she was trapped some how on US Air Base Fence inside .I was assigned trash duty to pick up with co worker car garbage along fence for about four miles out and four miles back. It plummeted in Tempature So I made a educated choice and said we must go back now .My dad used to call it use the God Given Brain you were born with. With sleet it can freeze cloths and freeze sweat in boot sto frost bite toes. Is this cabin in Pacific North West or Colorado ?Maybe Mont. or Minn. Oh I had Lymes Disease so Sorry about my spelling. I have been reading more to help improve. We have coyote here they swam across the Potomac River and now are in Saint Mary's and Here In Charles County. Mass has trouble with them coming in yard in daylight one grabbed a infant in crib but in reality Who leaves a child on a poarch at all. The Mom had to chase it and beat it with a broom handel to let child go. Are you a wildlife outdoors amn or conservationist? I beleive one should not kill except to eat and stock for winter. I have odd allergy to sulpher.. Ham beef Turkey Rubber mask +dive geer...hey did Dad or Friends help with that cabin...?Sorry I like story about the hous like in the book The Odessy?
Neat project, but after you get a truck and trailer, et. al to collect and haul all the supplies, buy the container, buy a welding machine, learn to use it, spend lots of extra time customizing doors and windows, etc...all for something that is ultimately unsaleable, only to then build another structure on top, I'm not sure it's really worth the hassle.
In that video I’m running the harbor freight titanium 140. It’s one of the cheapest welders around but it can be run off a smaller generator with a normal 120 plug. Miller and Hobart make really quality welders
Sorry, but converting standard shipping containers to dwellings is just DUMB really really DUMB. The whole concept is tantamount to a scam. When you factor in transportation costs and all of the modifications required to make it structurally strong and useable you might as well have just built something from scratch using conventional materials. And after all that hard work and cost you still end up with a weakened structure with low ceilings, terrible insulation and an inherent condensation problem.
@iRenovate DMV sorry if I stomped all over somebody's feelings. Hearing the truth can be harsh, and people get emotional especially when they've already sunk a lot of time, money and hard work into a dream project. But these conversions just don't make any sense unless you just really really like a vaguely industrial aesthetic to your micro home.

not my first choice of the materials, but a very nice job. Shows that you take a lot of thought in this project. Excellent job.

I love the reclaimed wood interior. the genuine quality it has.
I used a rubber wheel decal remover on my drill to remove a logo off my utility trailer. Worked great.
Cool build. The fun wears off quick when you're tearing apart fence panels and sanding off decades of paint!
I used an electric sander, like you show in the video, to strip the paint from my school bus. For the heavier paint areas like the stickers you show, I just used a heavier grit sandpaper.

Excelente projeto.
honestly one of the best diy video for a container build, thanks
Wow, thank you so much!!

thanks for putting that cost breakdown up towards the end it really motivates me to want to fullfill my container dreams lol also subscribed

Man , you do a good job, keep adding more videos
Looks awesome! It drives me nuts that a 20' isn't half of a 40' container in cost!
Thanks John! So true… turns out they are worth about the same if you sell one too low and buy another one too high hahaha…
So impressive. My dream of doing what you do will Never happen. I’m so happy for those who Can & Do ❣️.
I’m sorry to hear that Vicky! I certainly have those kinda dreams too.
look forward to part two at lake second story or deck!
Thanks Mary. Finished those projects recently and working on vids!!

Very nice, dude. Looks great.

Why not drywall instead of all that wood salvage mess? Great video btw.
Great video
Great it looks awesome 👌
Thank you so much Carol! Take care!
Love it. Damn shame people broke your windows etc. What idiots Where located ? Im very interested in your projects!
@Arthur Burke You are full of good advice.
Hire a contractor,Curious George. Or Call This Old House 🏡,They Deliver .
@The Coyote Lab I think it looks pretty good too. Thanks
Great question. The wood frame is attached with wood to metal screws to the metal window frames I made, which are welded to the container. It survived a long transport and a trip across the lake, so I think it’s a pretty good method!
Bea-U-tiful work!!! I would love to know the exact size of the windows? Thank you!
How wonderful
When will people think outside the box, I used 3" top-hat purlin on the outside with 3" insulation batts and covered with metal roofing material, then 1/8" ply on the inside which gave me an extra 8" of internal space, I also built steel trusses with insulation and steel roofing, as I am not in a snow area I fitted spouting and a tank to catch rain water
Right on John. Any pictures or vid? Would love to see it.
Awesome !
Ok, this is SOOOO random but you slightly sound like Kronk from emperors new groove! 😂 Otherwise, thank you for this awesome video, incredibly informative!
I have no idea what that is but can’t wait to check it out hahaha
So how do you handle a water supply, sewer and electrical hookups? I assume there is probably building restrictions that would not allow this type living.
No restrictions! Ain’t that great? There is electricity which I now have hooked up. We pump water from the lake and bring drinking water over. Most folks do septic since there is now sewer. I’ll post a video about some of that soon.
Great video 👌
A wire wheel might have worked better taking those stickers off without gouging the side
Maybe so…consensus on here seems to be that a torch works best for sticker removal.
Shoot.. it looks cool 👍
What a treat!
Thank you!!
Remind me why this is better than like a 6k shed from Home Depot parking lot
Can you use containers with a opening on the side?
No doubt. Looks pretty cool if you allow the side doors to swing open
Well done
Container has gotten too expensive :D cheaper to build from wood
Neat project, but after you get a truck and trailer, et. al to collect and haul all the supplies, buy the container, buy a welding machine, learn to use it, spend lots of extra time customizing doors and windows, etc...all for something that is ultimately unsaleable, only to then build another structure on top, I'm not sure it's really worth the hassle.
Hahahahahaha that’s a fair point, Karl. The investment is the property. Everything is for fun and learning.
Best 👍 job 👍
what kind of welder is best. Your suggesting is appreciated!
Thank You so much for the reply!!!
In that video I’m running the harbor freight titanium 140. It’s one of the cheapest welders around but it can be run off a smaller generator with a normal 120 plug. Miller and Hobart make really quality welders
Sleeper sofas 🛋 the heaviest piece of furniture
Why does basically everyone not know how to use a grinder spray the sparks down away from you before the disk catches and blows up in your face
Every time you cut a window or any open spot on a shipping container, you essentially jeopardize the container's structural integrity.
That’s the whole point of framing it so you bring back some of the strength.
This is super cool. I'd paint inside thou.
Hahahaha thanks man. I’m with you. But happy wife happy life
Very cool🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Looks great good luck…..
Thank you! I’ll need it haha
Nice!
Thank you 🙏
50% of viewers: what’s the deal with the helicopter shots?
Wow great,man
Baha how many wheels did you burn through and how much did it cost? You ever heard of a level?
Excellent! Village Kitchen got free advertisement.
Why not just use flashing for the windows and door. Water won't get in or sit still
I’ve never seen it done on a container but I am planning to try it on the next one
Man !! Talented hands
How much did it coast to build ?
It’s covered in the video.
