I wholeheartedly agree! What a blessing. I possibly would have never found out and read the works of Immanuel Kant if it were not for this brilliant mind and speaker.
Freud as one of the 20th century’s great poets, and meant as a compliment. That’s very insightful and I agree. Another fine lecture, it’s a real privilege to see these.
As far as I know, Harold Bloom was the first to regard Freud's body of work as great literature. I'm glad Dr. Sugrue concurs. There are recordings of a series of classroom discussions of Bloom examining Freud in this way on yt EDIT: Here's a good one - kzclip.org/video/rOC4tHjZslw/бейне.html
I don’t often comment on videos, but honestly thank you so much for uploading this You just helped me place a whole semester of rather intensive study into a central narrative. You really helped me see the forest through the trees!
I really appreciation Professor Sugrue's erudition and his ability to make it readily accessible. I've read several Freud books with fascination, but having heard Michael Sugrue, I begin to see the social, cultural, historical and epistemological implications of Freud's thought. Bravo!
Brilliant. Brilliant Brilliant! The idea that Psychology is a "soft" science and negative criticism of the theories of Freud as not scientific I have heard before. What makes your lecture so convincing is the knowledge and detail you add to your analysis that I agree with. In addition you add humor that makes this lecture not only entertaining but plausible and convincing on an "unconscious" level- we more often agree with people we can laugh with. The idea of a Primal Family in Totem and Taboo as Freud's source for where we get the unconscious- you blew away as equating that notion with Santa Claus- imagination and no proof in extremis.
This, in my humble opinion, has been the best introduction to Freud! i absolutely agree with your statement "Freud is one of the great poets in the 20th Century." Because what he said, was in line with the Romantic movement, ie, sublimation of our desires and feelings unto literature, as in the case of Wordsworth- in poetry. Thank you so much, Professor!!
this indeed is one of your best....thanks prof - you are so damn good and so insightful - loved the comparisons and the ways in which you linked up the several complex ideas and stayed fully in context and connected to the texts. Incredible what 45 minutes can pack - you are a truly a great teacher
This man is incredible. As someone whos read a great deal of Freud's literature its refreshing to find a video with someone who knows what theyre talking about.
Excellent intro into Freud from a philosophy perspective also I like the notation on the difference of language understanding between science in our understanding and wissenschaft in the German language of Freud.
“You can’t ignore the fact that there’s a social philosophy connected with this.” Hard to overstate how far this places the best of psychoanalysis from the dregs of psychiatry and pharmacology in 21st-century America.
I hate social media and technology but one thing it has done is made knowledge like this accessible to the layman if this were 20 years ago you would have to attend college to hear him speak now here it is right at your fingertips and that is great thing.
38:56 *Science of psychoanalysis* “It is like literary criticism or theology right, in _that_ sense it is scientific. It is not scientific in the sense the physics is scientific. The unconscious is not an entity in the sense that the liver is an entity. When you stop making those category mistakes you can begin to really appreciate what a great thinker Freud is because he’s talking about something, the internal contents of our psyche, that just resists strict hard shelled scientific discussion.” “The truth is that which runs after truth.” -Lacan “Science fiction, like psychoanalysis, holds open the place of truth as a hole in knowledge and thus does not subsume certainty under the category of knowledge.” - Theresa Giron
How can he go on speaking like that, not stammering a for second word. Not looking at the contents to say what's next? I understand he has put the time of his life into study philosophy. Let's say this Dr. Sugrue is certainly a genius of our generation.
A few things a guaranteed: this man drives a Saab 900, he prefers an aged single-malt and Cuban from time to time, this jacket is the only one he owns without leather elbow-patches, he plays basketball, he has always been 41 years old.
Ive always thought of Freud was more directly talking about the Archetypical Man and Woman rather than the father or mother. I know when I was younger and first exposed to Freud I missed the points entirely cause I thought or was perhaps educated to think it was all about sexual gratification in a subliminal way. Now I see it more as we develop our ideal Male and female figure then we relate it to the most prominent in the real world, and we develop ourselves based upon the unity of each ideal.
my perception it that freud very quickly forgot the reality that he was building off of, and ended up constructing a vast and fabulous mansion of of psychological thought atop a scant few skinny poles that does not stand under it's own weight when brought out of the paper. I feel like his work is a cautious tale to always check your work from outside of your own perspective and understand when looking out on the lake there is so much that you do not see under the waters.
God, he's wonderful! Wonder why no info can be found about him on the internet. Plus, the videos seem old. Where is he now? Does he give out new material yet?
Incredible. I wish there was a lecture on Jung. The end of this lecture kind of points to a move inwards towards the subjective and away from an objective world - which is where Jung went. It’s the great line that scares scientists and great thinkers like Einstein.
I'm always looking for new interesting lectures on Psychology/Philosophy, please let me know if you guys have any recommendations, would be highly appreciated
I think of Rene Girard when Sugrue speaks of the broader German meaning of science. As our physical sciences become more ambiguous in findings, think of quantum sciences effect throughout other physical science, the categorical split between physical and psychological ‘sciences’ seems less. Oh, and by the way, let’s include the observer in all our observations; J. Krishnamurti remarks, ‘the observer is the observer.” And we know of the affect from observing atomic particles changing the result.
The thing you've missed out is the importance of affect. Freud knows he's stumbled on the correct association or interpretation when it is accompanied by affect. And the more the affect the more significant the therapeutic finding or suggestion. When all affect is terminated then the analysis is over. At least as far as that particular symptom is concerned. I suspect that Auden too thought of Freud as a poet.
32:24 *Freud @ Rousseau* “Rousseau wants to fundamentally change society. Why? Because _we’re all corrupted by an evil world._ Freud says, _Look-you were evil to begin with. The world did with you what it could and it made you better than you would be and even that’s not very good.”_
Yeah, this guy is pretty amazing, the amount of knowledge he has on so many different people. Now.....haha! He loves that brown jacket though, maybe thats where his power comes from.
For anyone interested in the unification of psychoanalysis and empirical science, look into Mark Solms. He’s a neuroscientist and Freudian psychoanalyst who is establishing a new science called Neuropsychoanalysis. Very interesting and very exciting.
His criticism about where do the unconscious drives come from is answered by our integration with a society and the introduction of shame/guilt for innate tendencies and behaviors.
The Good Man to act in such a way in 2021 would almost seem jovial to most... You would get more acceptance acting like Nietzsche's Last man.. the way it is today.
Could the Oedipus Complex have arisen, and obviously this is speculation, when we went from living mainly in small bands, which may not have even clearly linked sexual activity to pregnancy, to living in nuclear families?
That's the part that typically loses me, Freud's stance on incest. Oops I'm resisting... I am surprised that Jung wasn't mentioned in the lecture. Still, I enjoyed the entirety.
It is an honor and a treasure to hear this great and an imposter professor no! I mean this great and IMPORTANT professor giving a lecture (my apologies for the Freudian slip)
I just can't get over how good this content is. Michael is so well versed in everything. Thank you Michael for sharing this content for free!!
Agreed. Blessed professor
I wholeheartedly agree! What a blessing. I possibly would have never found out and read the works of Immanuel Kant if it were not for this brilliant mind and speaker.
Facts
He's a brilliant yet casual teacher, which is a rare and awesome combination
And so engaging and great at explaining these complex people and their ideas.
Freud as one of the 20th century’s great poets, and meant as a compliment. That’s very insightful and I agree. Another fine lecture, it’s a real privilege to see these.
Harold Bloom talks about this too!

This much is true
I don’t often comment on videos, but honestly thank you so much for uploading this
You just helped me place a whole semester of rather intensive study into a central narrative.
You really helped me see the forest through the trees!
A signature lecture by a master. I've never seen ideas presented this clearly and cogently
This is a great unbiased overview of Freud! Gem of a lecture.

Just stumbled on your lectures sir , never went to college but I enjoy listening into these when I’m at work , thank you for making these available 🤙🏽

This is a wonderful example of the beauty of academic life. There is nobility in the pursuit of knowledge.
Thank you as always for giving these to the world.

Ineffably grateful for this content. Thanks, Dr Sugrue.
Thank you very much for continuously postings such rich lectures
another great video! Thank you so much for the upload Michael I'm a huge fan
This was a fantastic lecture. Thank you.
Absolutely riveting, insightful, and very helpful in clearing up a lot of assumptions and some misconceptions about Freud.
This is the best reading of Freud I've ever seen.
Liked this talk so much. Education is a precious thing. Cheers KZclip many thanks. Cheers SBM

Underrated comment

Is this not the best teacher you could ever find!
Second video that popped up in my recommended today. Excellent content. Subscribed
A great lecture absolutely!
Could you please make playlist for each Subject ?

Ah, Doctor Adam Friedland of Cumtown fame! What a spectacular lecture.
Did i crack
Bug adam
Pretty sure my reply was supposed to be Adam Freudland
youtube definitely thought this was cool adam and recommended it to us
Glancing through my youtube I legit thought by the thumbnail that this was a Cumtown bit lmao
Always great. Thanks for sharing.
I came here to learn more about Freud thanks to Migala Podcast, thanks to "El Senor Santo". Excellent content.
What a great mind, Michael
Great content. Too bad theres no follow up lecture on Jung’s alterations to psychoanalysis
God, man and the devil standing in for id, ego and superego….GODDAMN!! What an awesome interpretation
God, he's wonderful! Wonder why no info can be found about him on the internet. Plus, the videos seem old. Where is he now? Does he give out new material yet?
Such great content! What year is this from? I would guess sometime in the 90's, but still, I am unsure.
Would love to see a lecture about Carl Jung
This one is just so good👍👍👍

Freud on Netflix is an interesting series in light of this lecture.
I'm always looking for new interesting lectures on Psychology/Philosophy, please let me know if you guys have any recommendations, would be highly appreciated
Good one! Keep it coming
BEST summary I EVER have heard
Excellent. I could see Norm Macdonald as the Professor in an SNL skit.
Dear Dr. Sugrue do you happen to have a lecture on Jung? I would very much appreciate to hear your perspective on Jungian thought.
My thoughts exactly!
The observer is the observed.
I would have liked to hear him talk about the Typographic Revolution, if he ever talked about it ...
Ohhh, the fluency and the alacrity. Inimitable!
never knew Jeff Goldblum studied so much Freud before he collaborated with Cronenberg
Can you please add more information, like the date of the lecture... thank you
Great work
Amazing! I love this very much.
Bro these are GEMS!

I suspect that Auden too thought of Freud as a poet.
@Tom Bombadil ?
People forget how bad cameras and fashion were in the 90s lol, watching old home videos make me feel old as shit haha.
holy shit this is adam friedlands father
32:24 *Freud @ Rousseau* “Rousseau wants to fundamentally change society. Why? Because _we’re all corrupted by an evil world._
Freud says, _Look-you were evil to begin with. The world did with you what it could and it made you better than you would be and even that’s not very good.”_
So Freud basically used the Judea-Christian view of human nature
Yeah, this guy is pretty amazing, the amount of knowledge he has on so many different people. Now.....haha! He loves that brown jacket though, maybe thats where his power comes from.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The main problem with Frued is he wasn't a lucid dreamer, and thus did not consider or interpret those that are.
Love this 🥰
The best KZclip channel period
Sugrue is the unsung hero of the 21st century
Fair and interesting, a rarity.
I love learning from Harold Ramis
Can’t wait!
23:40, Would say that the consciousness has an even older start, Islamic philosophers speaks of it (fitra) and so does the Daoists with the Dao.
The Good Man to act in such a way in 2021 would almost seem jovial to most... You would get more acceptance acting like Nietzsche's Last man.. the way it is today.
Does anyone know when these lectures were recorded?
I saw somewhere that they are mostly recorded around the late 80s and early 90s. Lmk if I’m wrong.
I've been watching these lectures assuming they're from the 60s, but the mention of Mike Tyson at 5:50 places this squarely in the 90s
@James Freebury Yes this lecture was produced in 1992 part of a collection of lectures
i think they were from 92
Looks like the 90s to me...like early to middle.
I clicked because I thought this was a Norm McDonald sketch of some sort but this guy definitely owns a doghouse.
Patient: I disagree with you, Herr Doktor..Freud: "See, that's what I mean by resistance"
This guy just absolutely nukes philosophy teachers on KZclip.
Could the Oedipus Complex have arisen, and obviously this is speculation, when we went from living mainly in small bands, which may not have even clearly linked sexual activity to pregnancy, to living in nuclear families?
Never heard this version before. I think Elvis's (not _that_ Elvis) angry version is a real improvement.
That's the part that typically loses me, Freud's stance on incest. Oops I'm resisting... I am surprised that Jung wasn't mentioned in the lecture. Still, I enjoyed the entirety.
Adam Friedland teaches a class
It is an honor and a treasure to hear this great and an imposter professor no! I mean this great and IMPORTANT professor giving a lecture (my apologies for the Freudian slip)
Dear uploader, I'd love to revise Lacan as well.
