Jay is such a smooth professional answering all of the barrage of questions without skipping a beat! Incredibly capable and impressive vehicles that are definitely on my bucket list to drive and hopefully own one someday!
It’s awesome hearing Andrey unscripted and just being himself!!! 😂😂 He was nervous enough to really swear!! By the end he was definitely having a riot!! 😂😂 That’s so very awesome Andrey!! I’m so glad you got to really let loose and have a great time! Made the video really! These are very impressive off-road machines and some farms and ranches have them in my area. You see them once in a while. My friend’s friend (for what it’s worth) uses his Unimog with the dump box as his work truck! He has had one for decades and is used to it. I guess when you get used to them, the size is much less of an issue. Great video TFL!! Maybe next time we get to hear Nathan unscripted while in the Unimog!!
The portal axles are good for ground clearance, and they also have unique suspension that allows for a lot of articulation considering it has solid axles.
Fun fact. There is one size above the Unimog. The Zetros. I can not tell which I would prefer. However, I always saw the Unimog as pure Tool. Since I discovered what American Truck lovers to with the Unimog changed my view totally. Now I will get one for myself It is basically the perfect travel vehicle.
Those are not exactly tractors like those with big rear tires just for pulling farming equipment. Unimog means Universal Mobile Gerate (like universal mobile machine), as those older ones had PTOs front and back, some had mounting frame for carried equipment like front loaders or high-lifts etc. Nowadays it's usually all hydraulic driven. But those are as said .. UNIVERSAL. Usually as cab + flatbad , but could be anything from digger, snowblower, scraper, tractor, semi towing trailers or even with mounts to run on rails and pulling train wagons .. anything.
@Julián Minaya It's truly insane. Considering a surplus Bundeswehr u1300L for example is around 15k... Even if you'd be trying really hard, and buy the complete Merex and Atlas4x4 gear... It doesn't make any sense.
would love to own one of these incredible vehicles and overland with it. If I was driving it I would have a hard time giving it back, Great video and keep up the good work 👏
Rode in one once from the Bismark turm down to the commo compound back in the 80s. The german soldiers were going that way so they gave me a lift so I didn't have to walk it. This was up on the mountain outside of Bad Dürkheim.
The first one with a backhoe was used by us in the Army. Its called a “see” truck . Has front bucket in it as well. See standing for small equipment excavator
Great video guys! 20 years ago I drove these things for living. One had a Atlas crane on it, the other one had a Palfinger crane on it. Both had dumpboxes and for the winter we could put a snowplow up front.
Jay Couch is a treasure. We ran into him in the 2019 BAJA XL Rally when I was running with a team from Earthcruiser. Jay was running a big green UNIMOG custom Van body with a roof tent built into it. Great Fun. Love your work!
My dad had a round nose Mercedes’ truck back in the 80s he still regrets selling it. The thing was overbuilt and engineered, he wasted a ton of money on spares that he never got to put on the truck because truck never broke.
I saw that exact Unimog in las vegas in the beginning of November!!! I even parked my TJ next to it. It made my TJ look like a little Chihuahua standing next to a Cane Corso 😂😂😂🤣🤣 beautiful Unimog. I was madly in love with it when I saw it and wanted to ask him if we could trade keys.
I own 3 unimog for my side job I do here in Europe . All Komunal from Germany or Switzerland , basically a all in one extreme machine . I have like 12 attachments and I can do digging , snow plowing (snow turbine), wood cutting fork lift and many more I tow 30 ton with those. I do maintenance and work for locations that can’t be reached with normal machinery and have one with a mini camper cab to be able to stay out for days. Unimogs are my ultimate multipurpose apocalisse machine😂😂😂😂
@Jay Couch, Interested to hear your thoughts on the effect of Colorado denying registration/reregistration for all the US MIL and EUR MIL import vehicles. PS, loved This is Breslau.
I know a guy that bought a modern unimog for offroad deliveries. The windshield costs $5,000 to replace, and the truck is ~10 feet tall... so he spends a lot of time trimming branches
My uncle had the smaller unimogs in Western Canada that had the articulated back where the entire truck was the size of a Tacoma so it was Small BUT the huge wheels meant you had something like 20 inches of ground clearance and fantastic approach and departure angles. You could go on the narrowest overgrown logging roads for fishing n hunting purposes in that. My uncle sold it for a nice profit back in the day even though it had almost 200,000 km or 120,000 miles on it. Unimogs are actually quite useful in Western Canada. Our local Mercedes Dealer has a few in stock in Vancouver! Expensive though!
@Brian B-P I can look at the photos of it when I find them but since my uncle sold the unimog probably around 15 years ago I won't be able to see the actual placards. I know it still had unimog emblems/nameplates on it but I cannot be truly certain it was actually a Werner vehicle or not. What I do know is the frame itself was articulated between the wheels for maximum rough terrain traversing ability.
@DJ Tesseract it's too bad it's no longer around - you could check the placards on it and confirm that it's a Werner Uniknick. Werner still works with Unimogs, but only supplying components (such as winches) and upfits (such as adding a crane), not building articulated vehicles.
@Brian B-P the one my uncle had displayed unimog badges and was a surplus Bundeswehr (army) truck that was fully articulated in the middle with a joint between the wheels and was used as an in-field cargo carrier. I should still have old Polaroid photos of it and will take a look if I can find and upload them.
@DJ Tesseract what I found was that Werner (of Trier, Germany) used Unimog components (cab, engine, transmission, axles) to build an articulated vehicle that they called the "Uniknick". Mercedes didn't build it, it doesn't even use a Unimog frame, and it's not a Unimog, but it is interesting. I can understand how one would think it's a Unimog, since it uses so many Unimog components, and may even have Unimog badges on it. The Uniknicks were built decades ago with Unimog 401 and 406 components (notably cabs)... so they were small.
@Brian B-P No! The actual frame WAS articulated with a moving joint where the front and rear set of wheels was on a SEPARATE body/frame! Unimog actually made this type of articulated 4x4 and 6x6 from 1960 to about 2002! Look it up on KZclip for articulated Unimog!
I worked in Metro de Caracas, from 1989 to 1998, operating and maintaining four 1986 Unimog U1250, 352A engine, double cabin, orange, and bivial system for track maintenance and train towing, 8-speed forward and reverse, 88 to 1 in low, and air locked differentials.
Now I, fully understand how much behind The Curve ball I,was when I, volunteered my self to take a call for bushfire in South Phoenix and the brush truck at this particular station was a Unimog and I had never been inside one let alone driven one. I, did make the few miles to the call and then on the way back, I managed to get the gearbox hung up and had to call in my FUBAR. And the guys at this particular station made sure to remind me of that day very early in my career, but I will say it was fun while I was able to keep it rolling, and I was only a half a mile from the station and getting it back home.
It would be interesting to see what it takes to change a tire, maybe you can convince Tommy to give us some entertainment 👍😁
🤣🤣
Hahahaha i dont think tommy has ever chnaged a tire.
P
😂😂😂 do it Tommy!
Listen bro I don't think anyone should be taking these tires off unless they have to 😂😂
Andre: "So this isn't a mall crawler."
No, it is. It can crawl all over the mall.
hahaha I just spit my coffee over mykeyboard. Thaks for that comment.
And over them all LOL
Any episode with Jay Couch gets an automatic thumbs up. Always love seeing the Mogs!
Jay is such a smooth professional answering all of the barrage of questions without skipping a beat! Incredibly capable and impressive vehicles that are definitely on my bucket list to drive and hopefully own one someday!
You should visit the Unimog museum in Germany. There’s a test track there that will really show what a Unimog is capable of…
It’s awesome hearing Andrey unscripted and just being himself!!! 😂😂 He was nervous enough to really swear!! By the end he was definitely having a riot!! 😂😂
That’s so very awesome Andrey!! I’m so glad you got to really let loose and have a great time! Made the video really!

Great video TFL!! Maybe next time we get to hear Nathan unscripted while in the Unimog!!
This will be the best series from tfl! We need an IKE test with it along with the off road!
Finally an Unimog on Tfl truck!
Greetings from Germany. 🇩🇪
Hell yeah! SO glad you guys did this! Super looking forward to this, I have fallen in love with TFL content over the last month.
Love seeing the mogs actually getting used! Amazing machines
The portal axles are good for ground clearance, and they also have unique suspension that allows for a lot of articulation considering it has solid axles.

Since I discovered what American Truck lovers to with the Unimog changed my view totally. Now I will get one for myself It is basically the perfect travel vehicle.
Unimogs were common farm vehicles when I was a kid in southern Germany, 1960s. Thought they were just German farm tractors.
That was their initial intention.
exactly why they are so reliable and adaptable
My family still uses one in Malaysia on a vegetable farm, 1970s 400 series not exactly sure.
UNIVERSAL.

they still are...
I would love to see the cost breakdown of how this ends up at $400,000 considering how much these go for second hand in Europe.
When Jay said "400k" he was clearly joking/exaggerating.
No salesman talks about real prices in public or on camera.
@Julián Minaya It's truly insane. Considering a surplus Bundeswehr u1300L for example is around 15k... Even if you'd be trying really hard, and buy the complete Merex and Atlas4x4 gear... It doesn't make any sense.
@Julián Minaya pretty much my subtle point. I know how much these cost in Europe, because I have considered using one to replace tractor duties.
@ChibaCityBlues that’s the problem… the one he sell are 80’s models not brand new… ok he modified the truck but he don’t spend 300k on the truck
I love Unimogs. When I think of the ultimate off road truck, this is the first thing that comes to mind…
Jay is the guru of North America of Unimogs. I love Unimogs and always will. They are the ultimate off-road er .
Holy crap. I can't believe what that thing can do. That is an amazing vehicle. I can't wait to see what you do with it. Great video guys
would love to own one of these incredible vehicles and overland with it. If I was driving it I would have a hard time giving it back, Great video and keep up the good work 👏
Love hearing from someone so knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. If I was wealthy this is the exact guy I would want to sell me a unimog!
Rode in one once from the Bismark turm down to the commo compound back in the 80s. The german soldiers were going that way so they gave me a lift so I didn't have to walk it. This was up on the mountain outside of Bad Dürkheim.
@Paul Horn it was an honor and privilege to serve there, thanks.
Thank you for your service protecting West Germany in the Cold War! 👍👍👍
Ah I love couch offroad, thank you guys for doing more videos with him.
Love Andre in the passenger seat. Not often do you see him like that, I love it.
What a fun truck. You guys have one of the best jobs in the world.
The best guest on TFL no doubt. Great video!!!
Love to see more Unimog content!
Never heard Andre cuss so much! 😂😂 love it! I want a plethora of MOGS now too 😢
I don't remember them being that expensive when you could get them from Freightliner... But they are a hell of a lot cooler than military surplus.
Would love a unimog vs sherp off-road test
The first one with a backhoe was used by us in the Army. Its called a “see” truck . Has front bucket in it as well. See standing for small equipment excavator
I'm happy Andrey got to have some fun. He deserves it.
That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Absolutely perfect. Great review, guys.
I’d make one of those a Mallcrawler to be proud of! Always thought a Unimog with RV in the back would be a fun way to live.
Watching this video makes me want a Unimog so bad! I don't know what I would do with one, but I want one lol.
It’s so weird to hear Andre curse😅. He’s just so wholesome.
Great video guys!
20 years ago I drove these things for living.

Nice Australian Expedition Vehicle
I remember James May raced this truck in a Land Rover Range Rover, it was epic
That was an Oshkosh, but it was still epic
My dad had a round nose Mercedes’ truck back in the 80s he still regrets selling it. The thing was overbuilt and engineered, he wasted a ton of money on spares that he never got to put on the truck because truck never broke.
Hi guys. Great videos as always. Make an off road video with unimog and Iveco. Thanks
Impressive. I have no idea what half of those things do or their significance, but these are clearly refined and purpose built machines.
André is cleaning because he wants to get hired there so he can be with the trucks all day long. Not a bad idea,I ‘d do the same😂😂😂
You can tell Andre is enjoying himself I don’t think I have ever watch one your guys videos that need so many bleeps hahahaha
I would like to see a video of this truck driving over that POS you used for the tire chain video. That would be awesome.
Yes! Want to see some adventures in this!!!!
This is the first time in my life I've wanted anything made by Mercedes
Hahahaha same
Anyone know what the diff ratio, transfer case ratio, and transmission ratios are? Also how much overdrive is there with the gear vendors?
Unimog is going to recover the Hummer in Tommy's demise
I saw that exact Unimog in las vegas in the beginning of November!!! I even parked my TJ next to it. It made my TJ look like a little Chihuahua standing next to a Cane Corso 😂😂😂🤣🤣 beautiful Unimog. I was madly in love with it when I saw it and wanted to ask him if we could trade keys.
So obviously I want to see the test at the ranch, but have you considered doing the Ike gauntlet with it? Hookup a 10k lb trailer and see how it does!
I own 3 unimog for my side job I do here in Europe . All Komunal from Germany or Switzerland , basically a all in one extreme machine . Simply amazing vehicle!!! I saw feew of them in the mountains with diferent cabs styles and all are really cool. 😃
@Jay Couch, Interested to hear your thoughts on the effect of Colorado denying registration/reregistration for all the US MIL and EUR MIL import vehicles. PS, loved This is Breslau.
So it seems the Unimog Doug DeMuro reviewed...was actually the smaller Unimog.
Hello from Germany! That's a superb built, that unimog is an absolute unit! 🙂 congrats!
Car & Driver did a road test of a Unimog once in an April issue. They also did tests of a Baldwin Locomotive and the Goodyear Blimp.
The Mercedes Zetros could be intersting as well. It is very capable off-road but not as tall as the Unimog.
You just know the military is making something similar now with silent a/c motors.
Now for the fun part: Unimog vs Buhanka on the On X Off-road course at the ranch.
Well I mean if Andre decides to put lockers in the van
Well I mean if Andre decides to put lockers in the van
Awesome! I can't wait to see this do the ranch!
Pretty sure MattsOffatoadRecovery is building their own version of this pretty sweet all of the features this has
Ya, he is doing dual winches, one for rear, one for front (and almost 650k)
I'm so excited for this series.
Fantastic, so Bad Ass. Can't wait to see all the videos this will be in.
We have a man in East Texas that uses one for hay operation and hauling his rectangular large bales…
Wow, I’ve always loved Unimogs!!!
Just driving that thing looks like a lot of fun.
Maybe Andre and Mr. Truck can do an Ike towing test with a nice horse trailer???
This makes me miss the LMTV, it won't do 70+ down the road but it will go through just about anything
Roman always comes off as a know-it-all.
This dude is living my fkin dreams. Man I want one, one day!
I know a guy that bought a modern unimog for offroad deliveries. The windshield costs $5,000 to replace, and the truck is ~10 feet tall... so he spends a lot of time trimming branches

"Say, what terrains are the Unimogs actually made for?"
Unimog: "Yes."
That’s quite funny. The symbol on the side of the vehicle is actually a Dakar rally symbol, and not people planning on robbing you😂
Looks like Andre was having some fun.
Great guy he know his stuff very well. Great video guys
Unimogs are great (as long as you don't have to be anywhere quick). They can traverse all kinds of terrain and not even feel it.
Darn I'm guessing it will not fit in my 10ft door. Unless the CTS lowers enough.
Where I live these are bought from townships for multipurpose use. Cutting, Transport, Winter Service.
This is my favorite topic and place you cover!!! Couch is the absolute BEST! I would love to work there in a few months when I retire from my LE job.
Good off roader for its size but very slow on or off road. I’ve seen many of them in Baja.
Makes me want to play snow runner now.
Thanks, I've love the Unimogs since the 404. Someone has to spend a day at Midwest Military in Washington MO and drive their trucks.
Awesome content as always
Andre can't control is typically tame language when riding on the course! 🤣
I instantly recognized the Silhouette due to the distinctive modern boxy Unimog nose.
Funny he mentioned a Samurai: I was just thinking his wheels and tires together weigh as much as my old Sami!
You guys need to do a Unimog video series
What fantastic machines.
That thing is a BEAST!

Andre throwin' those curse words around...🤣🤣🤣🤣
I saw a few of these out in the snow. The city spent most of the budget on new bike lanes so plows.
This is the most I've ever heard Andre curse. I now know where to go to vehicle shop if ever I win the lottery.
I thought you guys might have gone off the rails and bought a monster truck for the ranch.
Would love an IKE Gauntlet...
That is an amazing truck! Now if only i had DEEP pockets. Lets see how it does at Tumbleweed Ranch.
We want the f'n cheap challenge🔥🔥🎉
Such an amazing vehicle.
Go ahead and send me one to test out in our Alaskan winters!
