I remember hearing about a story of a guy who was accused of driving under the influence of drugs, even though he claimed that he had not. He said it was the noodles at a certain restaurant, though no one believed him. That restaurant was later found guilty of putting drugs in their noodles, making them addictive.
As a Panera employee I drank our new lemonades like 2 days in a row and had the worst and most severe panic attacks I've had in my life and just overall increased anxiety. I now know high caffeine makes my anxiety worse I've simply never exposed myself to THIS much caffeine especially since all it takes is ONE charged lemonade for it to be too much for me :) not to mention customers are getting refills of this stuff.
@Kosmik Cat unfortunately it’s not the same because Panera has significantly more caffeine than one 12fl oz Red Bull. Like 111mg caffeine vs 390mg. If you watched the video 400mg is the allowance for the entire day and Panera has 390mg in one sitting. I have drank many red bulls before, lots of coffee and other things with caffeine. I understand my own body and know what type of reaction I had to Panera’s lemonade. (Not trying to sound rude btw!) the caffeine is just so crazy high I just avoid it now 😓
Same, but it made me stay up for so long, the crash had me feeling like I had a fever or something. Most.of us now just mix 1/3 of it with sprite or the lime bubly.
I love Panera, as many people do, clearly. But I also was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle) last year and have to be careful about caffeine intake and what my diet consists of. So I don’t eat out too often since then, but I usually avoid any coffee and energy stuff. Thank you for doing this video because my condition is on the fairly serious side and that amount of caffeine could be a massive issue.
@Stormfire152 people with gluten allergy ask a baker if the gluten free is really gluten free, people with caffeine intolerance can ask if a drink has any caffeine. The world can't adjust to every single condition yk?
@Texan Elite hop off panera's meat bro, it isn't clearly labelled and even if it was that's still an absolutely absurd amount of caffeine for a lemonade to contain
So use context clues, and read “charged” in the name. Could help you understand that it’s a energy drink. Then you can read to nutrition facts that are displayed right under the name of the drink.
I'm glad you also mentioned Starbucks refreshers because it was the first analog I thought of. In my Cafe, I always warn parents who are obviously buying them for their young child (and I'm talking like, toddlers wanting a pink drink) that this drink is going to have as much caffeine as their own cup of coffee. Some parents don't care, okay, fine, your choice, I warned you. Most of the time, they are SHOCKED because "nobody has ever told us!"
I don’t drink that much caffeine because it makes my stomach angry (my term for extreme cramps), I only drink caffeine if I have exams and at that it’s 100 mg spread over 12 hours. I had one of those refreshers after 2 months of no caffeine and I was extremely hyper because I drank it so fast. Now I know why.
@Lilo Whitney True but also its different for every individual. I have adhd and depending on how much i drink it helps me focus at times but if i drink too much or too little then classic caffeine symptoms. Also depends on ur tolerance, how often u have caffeinated drinks, etc
I’ve outgrown most social media platforms, but I’m so happy that homegirl Sarah educated the people on the sugar and caffeine levels of the Panera charged lemonades. Isn’t trippy how you can heal or poison yourself just based on what you eat/drink?
while I agree the charged title is a dead give away that it has some sort of caffeine content, most people don't know what 200-300mg of caffeine really is, so I understand people drinking multiple cups of it not thinking about it.
@Texan Elite Going from 'Energy Drink' to 'this is literally the same as 4 energy drinks in one serving and btw would you like a refill?' is pretty vast. As you looked at those things, were you aware it counted as multiple espressos? Cause people don't instinctively look at the mg and think 'ah, I know exactly how much my normal coffees contain, I have a good grasp how this'll affect my body'.
Literally having the smallest amount of common sense I saw the word “charged lemonade” instantly thought wow this is probably a energy lemonade. Then used the last of my 5 brain cells to read the calories sugars and caffeine that is right in front of your face on the plate.
Quitting caffeine was one of the best decisions I ever made. It doesn't give you "energy", it makes your brain forget when you're tired. It's a culturally misunderstood drug, no better for you than alcohol, but potentially more dangerous because it lacks the stigma and restrictions. MatPat doesn't explore one of the other reasons that nearly lethal doses of caffeine are legal: the soda companies are in bed with the government.
@Thomas Sohocki Reading and reading comprehension are 2 different things. This is why people think things that are labeled "natural", "plant-based" etc to be a sole indicator of a good thing and "processed", "artifical" etc to be a the only thing that matters when deciding if its bad. If anyone ever took the "personal accountability" argument seriously they will know that its not an excuse to pass on the buck to the next guy, as people seem to miss the part where they have to take ownership of situations that they are involved in(and guess what if your part of the chain of events and played a role, you guessed it you got to own it, maybe you wont need to pay for damages but you gotta take stock of what you could've done differently to prevent or lessen the damage/outcome).
@Thomas Sohocki agreed. There was the sugar caffeine amount on it. The argument is they claim the company should tell people on product how much caffeine a person need. Not there job
Yeah big pharma really likes this shield, as some doctors who give talks sponsored by certain companies are taken out to dinner by the company at places that are extremely expensive, one place in California had a review that said, if you saw the bill the tips alone would make you cry.
As someone who went through caffeine withdrawal (after going cold turkey on all caffeine sources in my life about a year ago, which includes most chocolate products, certian icecreams, soda, certian energy bars or other packaged food products, and most teas), I can tell you that when you become hooked on caffeine as a child, it PHYSICALLY hurts to try and stop consuming it. I had headaches, nausea, brain fog, and occasional fainting spells because of the withdrawal, and every time I accidentally consume a single smidge of caffeine the pain and symptoms come flooding back even worse than before. I just feel that they need to label this stuff for people like me who feel physical pain after consuming even an extremely low dose of caffeine, I mean, if it causes pain to people there should be a warning label for it.
My parents are hooked on these drinks because they have the Paneras sip club and they get it every day, and I've been warning them that it's not healthy for you to drink that much caffeine, and they just rub it off
I mean, that's just how addiction goes. You tell a cocaine addict that they're doing a dangerous amount of cocaine, they're just gonna shrug it off. You tell a heroin addict that they're doing a dangerous amount of heroin, they're just gonna shrug it off. Someone that's addicted most likely isn't gonna slow down their roll just cause someone else said it's dangerous, it usually takes some kind of consequence in their life to slap them in the face and make them aware of the danger they're putting themselves in.
Yeah I stay away from these charged drinks....I just go with their iced green tea When I had 1st joined the sips club I was in on charged lemonade but I had to take a break from all that borderline caffeine overload lol smh
As a friend of someone who used to consistently drink energy drinks with like 250 mg of caffine in them, seeing the big numbers was not as scary as it should be
I’ll always remember the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade that makes someone overdose on caffeine which could cause kidney failure and might make them come back for more.”
I remember seeing a tiktok where someone in the comments mentioned their Panera moved the charged lemonades behind the counter to limit refills, not cause of the drink costs but because people were doing what Sarah was doing and drinking 3+ in a sitting, not knowing how much they were consuming, and that was how I learned they were caffeinated at all. I think selling them is fine but like they either need to be counter restricted to enforce the serving size or there needs to be a more obvious warning placed on the drinks. They're technically not sneaking it in since they list the caffeine amount but like how many people have no clue HOW caffeinated they really are? Three times the amount of caffeine as what you find in a monster energy drink and they only noticeable distinction from the other lemonades Panera sells is that they have Charged in the name...
The problem with that "solution" is now that it's behind the counter, a customer cannot see the caffeine amount. How do I know this? I just literally got an charged lemonade from Panera and it was behind the counter. Majority of American have vision problems the expectation that now you can still see that small font is absurd. For me, I had half a lemonade and decided nope (I got the large).
I recently started working at panera again after working there several years ago, and I didn't read the label on the charged lemonades. Drank 3 cups of the stuff before I realized I put almost 800 mg of caffeine in my body. I was WIRED. It was horrible lmao
When I was a kid, I was always confused why I could only get certain drinks from the soda fountains while my siblings and parents could get whatever they wanted. I was on meds that you were not supposed to mix with caffeine, or else it could have severe consequences. If I had had that lemonade, I may have died because of the medicine I was taking. So yeah, things that have caffeine should be labeled clearly.
@natalie d OP was a kid then bro, I don't think kids would expect caffeine (especially that ridiculously high amount) in good ol lemonade and just drank it thinking it was fine-
@natalie d I was saying as a kid who couldn't read properly, I would have thought it was just lemonade. That caffeine mixing with the stimulus I was already taking may have been too strong for my tiny body at the time. Making my heart go kaput.
Wife suggested we do panera for lunch today, and I immediately thought of this video. We both decided to get the charged Mango Yuzu Citrus to see what the big deal was. Oh boy this could be dangerous, because they are really good, and I could totally see myself drinking more than one of these.
I think what's more concerning is their "free sip club" thing, a fun thing is that they have a freaking membership where you get a free drinks, no matter how many refills you wanna get, so long as you purchase food.
As a person who actually works at a Panera, most of the cashiers take it upon themselves to warn parents about the caffeine in the chargers for children
Also, from one caffeine lover to another, Matt: THANK YOU. This is an excellent video. You might even save a life, my friend. People really need and deserve to know how much caffeine goes into their bodies.
I just want to say thank you for making this video. I suffer from epilepsy and I have dyslexia. If I didn't see your video I wouldn't have known better and had one of those drinks and it could have triggered me into a episode. Thank you so much.
@PrincessLovelorn Learning the tools to better protect your health is the best kind of skill someone can learn. Some just need a bit more in-your-face kind of learning from time to time. Nativity is in everyone.
@Vaporean_BoyLove.0w0 not just companys, gov too. Ur totally right and its not just an opinion. But being dyslectic or epileptic doesnt make u any less responsible to look at for your own health. We all get played by the system. So watch out for uslrself yk
@PrincessLovelorn This is a pure opinion I am about to puke out. I believe it's a mix of not having much public knowledge about food and nutrition and companies taking some sense of advantage of that. Though there are many variables here.
@PrincessLovelorn So if dyslexia isn't the issue, then it's people not knowing how much caffeine is bad for you. Because you can read the nutrition label but do you understand what you just read? Like do you know what this label is saying and what to look out for? Including if you're a kid or teen not taught about food consumption. Just because you can read a label doesn't mean you know what the text means. Plus many don't think to read the label when a product is surrounded by other products with way less caffeine or associated with none caffeinated products. Also advertising will also skew the presentation of the product.
Stuff like this makes me glad that I am seemingly immune to caffeine. If anything, I get sleepy since the most I'll ever have is if I drink coffee, which I've come to know as a warm, cozy drink for when I don't want something as thick as chocolate.
I also had never any stay awake effect of caffeine but since I didnt have a benfit from it at all, I stopped taking it as far as possible. The only time I willingly intake it is when I have a bad headache: espresso, sugar plus Lemon Juice is a very good pain reliefer for these cases
Fun fact: that’s a symptom of ADHD! It’s all the heath risks at high doses with none of the energizing benefits. As someone with ADHD, I feel you, caffeine naps are the best. I will say though caffeine keeps my brain from bouncing all over the place so I can focus better.
Omg I’m so glad I saw this video😳🤦🏽♀️. My body doesn’t handle caffeine well (I do tea at the most) and I would be soooo sick if I got one of those🤦🏽♀️ and I usually avoid caffeine drinks so I’m a lemonade/fruit drink person to AVOID caffeine. No way I would think lemonade had caffeine let alone more than ten monsters 😳.
I have worked in 2 paneras over the span of 2 years- both had different locations for the soda machine, both having the charged lemonades right next to it. They replaced our flavored teas that were caffeine free, so many people have said "I tried it thinking it was also caffeine free"
Absolutely they need to advertise this better. I ordered one the other day, not even realizing it was a “charged lemonade”. I thought it was a flavored lemonade. I am 13 weeks pregnant, the recommended daily max of caffeine during pregnancy is 200mg. Thankfully when the cashier asked if I wanted half or full it threw me off, and I saw it was charged and looked it up in time, but I could have easily missed it and consumed an unsafe amount of caffeine.
@Dae The average consumer who isn't watching a video explicitly designed to teach them about this barely knows if caffeine should be measured in grams or milligrams, nevermind how much is irregular. That's the big problem with just throwing a number at someone like it means anything without context.
as a panera employee, i usually tell the parents of kids when i see the kids serve themselves some. But its sad to say that i drink so much of these just to stay awake that i dont really feel more awake after drinking cups of it.
I have a mitral valve prolapse and I've always been sensitive to caffeine... this is terrifying. I'll always be checking labels and asking from now on when I order things
I used to work at Panera, it does have lots of caffeine. I'd recommend adding bubbly as the base and put a little lemonade. They labeled everything it's on the little tag. Be careful drinking it. Also the apple one tastes like vinegar. I can't have the mango one because I'm allergic to mango. They sell coffee too. (The strawberry one is the best
As someone who works at Panera and drinks these almost everyday just to be able to get through my shift, I make sure to let customers know that the charged lemonades have caffeine
It's wild that this video was posted literally a few days since my mom and I decided to go to Panera for breakfast. I got one of the charged lemonades (large size) and thought that it wouldn't have more caffeine than a soda. Also I'm not really aware of nutritional limits such as the limit of daily caffeine. Seeing that it has almost as much or more than two cans of energy drinks, no wonder I felt energized and awake that day.
I work for Panera, and AS SOON as I found out about how much caffeine is in these (around four months ago) I immediately warned pretty much everyone I talked to regularly.
@The Game Sage I work at Panera, most people get these things without ice. More get the large w/o ice than the regular making it even worse. Also the serving size is probably measured for people who fill up their cups 3/4 of the way with ice since that’s what we as employees are told to do so chances are you are getting that much even when filling your cup with ice.
I wish this was made when I was in 8th grade. My old ADHD meds were pumped with stimulants and I had a monster before school. I ended up having a rapid heart rate and was sent to the hospital for a few hours in the middle of the day.. BUT HEY BECAUSE I WATCH YOU I DO MY RESEARCH AND FEEL SMARTER I LOVE YOU MATT
Thank you for informing people of the risks of over consumption of caffeine. I remember talking to a teenager who was SUPER jittery to the point where it was concerning me. He explained to me while we were talking that he had drank two big energy drinks in two hours. I then politely said to be careful because caffeine overdose is a real thing. We really don't think about what it can do to us because it is really everywhere in America, but it is something we should be aware of.
this explains so much- i have adhd and it means my reaction to caffeine isnt becoming hyper, its becoming extremely tired. i remember a month or two ago i was feeling great, got a full nights sleep for the first time in awhile, went to panera and got one of these, and immediately passed out when i got home
The first time I got a charged lemonade I stayed up for 30 hrs and played games for like 4 hrs straight while sweating relentlessly feeling like my eyes were going to pop out.
One of the last times my friend and I went to Panera, an employee asked if we wanted to try their new charged lemonades. We both said sure, since we both like lemonade. We didn’t know it was essentially an energy drink. Once we started drinking them, we noticed that they tasted really strange and “unhealthy”. I saw the name “Charged” and I guessed that they might’ve been energy drinks. So we poured them out and got some tea instead 😂
@Pg13 addys (and their friends Ritalin, concerta, Vyvanse) are top tier. Coke is kinda bad for studying imo. Apart from being far harder to source (specifically pure or minimally adulterated stuff) the effects are too short lived and the euphoria hit is almost too much to keep focus. I find it does work better if you’re ADHD, but in general get the pharma study drugs.
As a university student that has developed a quasi-Monster Energy addiction in later years, I have to admit, I wanted a sip of this ever since I hard of the caffeine contents XD
The word "Charged" made me read the labels fully...I mix around 6-8oz of that plus the rest of a 30-ounce cup as the unsweetened tea to get a far lower calorie and reasonable caffeine buzz drink. The amount of caffeine IS insane on those...and they are so sweet and flavorful that you get a GREAT drink with so much less of that lemonade. (I have also just watered it down and been VERY happy since it is STRONGLY lemony)
I've seen pregnant women who were trying to avoid caffeine drink Starbucks refreshers as a replacement for their coffee. It's nowhere near as much, but if you aren't aware to take account of it in your daily amount it can sneak up on you. I had no idea any of these drinks were so heavily caffeinated.
As someone who has heart conditions, I was interested in this. And then you mentioned mitral valve prolapse, which is something I have. Finding this out, I’ll definitely gotta be more watchful with what I drink 😭😭😭. I never touch energy drinks so it being in a lemonade and being so lowkey?? Yeah no
I was friends with the sister of the 16 year old who passed away from caffeine overdose. It was a huge deal for our school, since he passed away in class, and actually scared me away from caffeine to this day. On the bright side of such a sad story, our school created a music room to honor his memory since he was so into music. Hope he rests in peace and that his story serves as a warning to other underaged kids against too much caffeine
@nathan christman can't say that with 100% certainty. Depends on the kind of coffee, the kind of energy drinks, and the strength of the pills. Could have definitely been way under the minimum lethal dosage for an "average" person and it still could've deceased him. Everybody is different.
@SPP precisely my point actually. Everyone should pace themselves and practice moderation with pretty much everything. Just because Bob's baseline level of moderation is "x" amount of "y" substance or activity does not at all correlate to the results that little Sandra or Mikael might face when trying the same thing(s) at really any amount/level, so forget what Bob's over there doing and think for yourself, and use discretion. Just as well, for kids. Teens included, that's the parents job to regulate that and teach them how to be safe. If they don't know, then they need to learn, so at the very least they can inform their children properly and with as little bias as possible. There is no excuse for willful and/or negligent ignorance a.k.a.- stupidity, and it shouldn't be the govt's(not the argument here specifically but this is the subject in which those talks pop up. Just as well, the people that are for that are objectively incorrect, as everyone involved should be doing their part as opposed to putting blame somewhere undeserved and causing far more harm -through forcing regulation- than good.) Job to parent peoples kids for them. Note- that's not directed at any person or group or intended in any way to denigrate from any mourning or anything like that. it's just statements of fact. If, however, after knowing this, you still find some way to take offense (whoever you may be) not my problem take it to therapy so your therapist can tell you you're being unreasonable and help you learn to handle it better in the future. Cheers
@3xeplod!ng_3agle_studios just further proves how easily someone can hurt themselves or even die. someone can see those kinds of people and think it'll be ok to take the same stuff. definitely happens a lot in school and gym settings.
I don't know if I'm the only person, but I use these theories the same way Sarah used those charged lemonades. Watching 4-5 videos while I work on my schoolwork. They make me feel happy and help me stay focused on my work. These theory channels are really getting me thought my last year of high school. And for that, thank you to everyone on team theorist.
Yizoos, thanks for making this video. I have a cardiopathy and I can't drink any energy drink unless I want an unplanned hospital visit and I usually go after the "natural" drinks in restaurants so I would've definitely drank one of those monstruosities unknowingly
I'm glad I came across this video! My mom and I frequent starbucks (who doesn't) and my sister is a Panera person. Both of them have varying health issues with my mom being someone who can't do a lot of caffeine - and I had 0 idea about any of this. I''m a bit paranoid now which I know is no the way to go but at least now I'll be more cautious and tell my mom to not get refreshers.
As someone who works at Panera, I always make it apparent to others that they have caffeine. In fact at my store, my manager has made it a requirement for all of us to state that the charged lemonades have caffeine so that kids don't accidentally drink them.
@Neil Stone Because the 260-389 mg of caffeine that the lemonade has is over six times the average can of soda. And well over the amount seen in documented cases of underage caffeine overdoses. On top of that, free refills especially encourage children and parents to grab a second serving for the road, which is in risky levels of caffeine intake for adults.
Your theory is real. I remember I walked into Panera once and sat down. I was waiting for my food and happen to notice something. Everyone had that exact lemonade drink. I had Atleastq counted 13 people with that drink. It weirded me out a bit but now it all makes sense
100% agree with this on a similar note, i realized after a month or two that i'd been drinking iced coffee when i am not a coffee drinker ever, it straight up wasn't labeled as coffee, simply "iced matcha"
Man I love those lemonades. I only get them every so often and I really don’t want some back lash to take them away. People need to take responsibility for what they consume and how much they consume.
Because most people aren't mostly taught that caffeine is a drug at least in my opinion. they know but they dont see it as anything bad just something extra
100% agree with you. Also Mat mentioning he (or the average person) can’t contextualize 260 mg scares me (but sadly not surprising). How are people this uninformed about the most common psychoactive substance in the world. Also also espresso comparisons drive me up the wall. Goes back to the same point, people just assume espressos have max caffeine because they’re “strong”. No they’re strong because the volume is small and you ingest more caffeine in less time, not in terms of actual caffeine. Finally (and I’m not done the video so it might get mentioned), while these caffeine OD deaths are sad, the LD50 of caffeine is 100-200 mg/kg body weight. That’s where you get a 50% chance of death. It’s people with underlying conditions or people who consume it in its pure form that die, not your average healthy person.
I remember I had one of these lemonades not too long after they first released. Like Mat and probably most everyone, I did not know of the high caffeine dose within it. I didn't feel anything too much out of the ordinary since I drink energy drinks/per-workout every so often. Thank goodness though I do not have any medical issues unlike thousands of others, or it could have turned out much worse. In fact I just realized during this video how much was really in it. That is very concerning and scary for people who could be very sensitive to this, and should be taken off the market, or properly labeled!
glad to see you cover this, i was at one point consuming more then 1000mg of caffeine. 3LT of coke cola, AND 1LT of Coffee (using empty 2LT bottle) per day, I couldnt stop cold turkey. found out i was more likely to die from the withdrawal doing that. spent many years slowing down consumption and now have about 300mg a day. i talk about it a lot, but no one pays attention, because its caffeine. its as problematic to the person as alcohol, however it doesnt have such "outword" effect. ( fighting, yelling, breaking things, drunk driving, ect.) so no one cares.
I worked at Panera. I actually quit last year. I use to have to tell customers with kids that those lemonade had caffeine. Kids and homeless came in there often drinking those lemonade. And it was ALWAYS the large cups.
As someone who is extremely addicted to caffeine, I make sure to read labels very thoroughly to make sure that I am drinking less than 400 mg of caffeine. I can probably still handle one of these lemonades, but that's pretty much it. I get very jittery after like 500 or 600, which is way above the recommended safe levels of caffeine.
I used to work near Panera and got their beverage club so I could pop in and grab their green tea on break and drink it for a few hours, when the charged lemonades came out I used to add a little bit of it, 1/4 of my cup at most Kinda glad I didn’t get more that that at a time 😬
i work at panera bread and im 100% sure there should always be labels showing how much caffeine and calories there are in every cup size cuz thats how my panera do it💀
Thank you for making this video! I have the type of ADHD where I can’t get the “good” effects of caffeine so I can’t always tell if i’ve had too much until my heart starts racing and I have a panic attack. Because of this I no longer drink caffeine if I can help it. If I had gone to Panera I could have easily drank 1 or 2 of those and have been in serious trouble!
The Panera I worked at accidentally didn’t dilute it enough when we first got it. I tried it, and needless to say, I was extremely high on caffeine and nearly panicking as my managers laughed at me.
When I first started working at Panera, I always drank the strawberry mint lemonade, but it seemed a bit too strong for me and it gave me heart burn, so I would water it down. And I didn't just add a little water. I would do half and half, but even then, it was still strong. Whenever I worked late, I'd always wonder how I managed to stay up so long and feel so good. One day, I was getting the lemonade and I just so happened to look at the label where it said how much caffeine it had. It all made sense then, but it took me MONTHS to figure out it had any caffeine at all. Ever since, I've been trying to drink more water.
@Official Crackhead because I was commenting under a comment mentioning Panera that is under a video mentioning Panera. Everything around this comment is about Paneras Lemonade so ofc it’s obvious I am talking about Paneras Lemonade when defending the person saying they where getting addicted to Paneras Lemonade. Someone discredited that and I responded with “hard to not get addicted to great tasting liquid filled with an addictive drug” that is obviously referring to Paneras Lemonade. What even is this discussion with you? If you want to know what Panera is doing or stating go check the it the socials yourself. I never pretended to have news about them so why would I know? Google exists.
@Togas Nightcores You never mentioned Panera you just said good tasting drink loaded with caffeine never said Panera name and you never mentioned Them not making it obvious it was energy drink and other people were talking about caffeine itself not the Panera situation so I confused you with one of them but that’s my bad and I watched the video it has 1.7 million views the company Panera could at least put out a statement in two days that’s what I was asking have they put out a statement in the two days this vids been up
@Togas Nightcores I thought you were talking about any good tasting caffeine drink by the way do you know if Panera has stopped doing this or are they still doing this have even changed the label to show its a energy drink if they would’ve labeled it a energy drink from the start then I would say it’s your responsibility to look at how much caffeine is in there but they acted like it was a regular lemonade which is wrong
Frankly, I'm a bit of a caffeine addict who has, on one occasion, consumed nearly 1,100 mg of caffeine (Edit to clarify: In the span of an hour). I genuinely feared for my life in the timespan that it had effected me and the fact that Panera isn't telling you how much you're actually consuming up front is frightening, because if someone doesn't know how much they're consuming and they have no tolerance to caffeine, that could end VERY badly.
I went on a date with my husband for valentines after he got off work, I almost got the lemonade because it looked good but got the tea instead, not as much sugar. Im 3 months pregnant and didn’t even notice the caffeine
This video made me buy more charged lemonades lol. One 20 oz is about just as much caffeine as you should be able to take for a whole day, and I work a night shift. So having one big dose in one go to last the evening is perfect for me. I know the issue is panera not letting people properly know how much caffeine is in them, but my LOCAL panera never had that problem because employees will tell you how much caffeine is in them when you order for the first time.
As someone who works with the bubbler drinks and lemonade, they do contain a lot of caffeine but also as a collage student it is an easy thing to grab on the way to work
One time during college I had 2-4 headache pills with 60 mg of caffeine each and a cup of coffee with 4 pumps of espresso. The pills were normal but the coffee was bc I had to study for exams. I was literally a zombie the next day, my body felt like it could run a marathon but my brain was barely working lol, I can’t imagine feeling like that bc of lemonade 😵💫
I was just a baker there, so I would just get it as my free drink employees get, but it was pretty obvious in the marketing of it that it had caffeine in it. I was pretty happy about it and would drink it often to get me through my shift. But I had NO idea it was THAT much caffeine. Probably started having caffeine withdrawals without knowing it
Yeah, I don't get how you can take the time to make sure you get the flavor you want, not see all the other text on the sign, and decide to not read it. What else are you doing as you fill up the drink?
@Plant I mean it had the amounts listed somewhere but I had no reference for how much caffeine that was😅 But after a while the drink would give me shudders because I guess my body was tired of consuming that much caffeine, but my productivity and motivation was all over the place since my body became reliant on the caffeine and I stopped drinking it often. Damned if I drank it, damned if I didn’t.
Bro that’s fucked. The Panera I worked at had a sign on the front of the drink dispensers. I saw it had like 80 something grams of sugar and didn’t ever try it
Considering what you've just informed us at the beginning of the video(as well as how fast bc of the fact that you were drinking it 2) I can obviously see how such a drink could have such a high caffeine count, that it would make Scrat pop
I’m happy you covered this. I would never have known it had any caffeine, especially since it only shows in fine print. I’m sensitive to caffeine so I’ll stay away from these drinks.
I go to therapy sessions with my psychiatrist and he always told me to not drink caffeine at all to avoid anxiety crisis, the way a lot of products have caffeine in disguise is very concerning.
The first time I had it, I loved it for the first cup. Although the moment I had the second one, I had one of the worst panic attacks that I’ve ever had.
So I worked their for a good 6 months. When we first got the lemonades, no one not even the managers knew how much caffeine was in them. So everyone would drink like three cups and then wonder why we all are about to have anxiety attacks. It was a lovely time. One time, because I was known was the person that never sleeps, was told if I’m so tired I should just chug a big cup of the drink in one go. I did. I had an anxiety attack and went home. I no longer work there.
My school once had a free Panera food stand in campus for a pep rally. Some students said the drinks felt similar to energy drinks but the school dismissed it as being really "healthy".
I have ADHD and a common side effect of my ADHD is that caffeine makes me lethargic. Give me a cup of coffee and I will be asleep before I finish it. I went to Panera a couple of weeks ago and got a sandwich and one of these charged lemonade having no clue they contained caffeine. Before I had even finished eating, I felt really tired. I guess this explains it. I wish I would've known so I could've avoided buying it and messing up my day.
Panera how could you? I loved you! How could you? You could have literally killed me! I can’t have too much caffeine cuz of my ADHD medication! How dare you?! I can’t believe I trusted you! 😭
The wild thing is that I usually actively search out 300mg energy drinks & they’re surprisingly hard to find! I needed it due to having hypokalemia and adrenal crash, but knowing I only needed it due to everything not working right, made me realize how dangerous that could be for someone with a functioning metabolic system!
@UwUperson9987 I have to imagine you are looking just a little bit harder than most people are, and it was literally on the pouring label that it had caffeine and the exact amount. I would imagine you would have to be being pretty flippant to purchase a product called charged lemonade and pour it from a thing that says it has caffeine and the exact amount to get snuck up on by that
Dang, I love those lemonades, and I knew how much caffeine was in them, but I still always felt that a Monster had more or at least the same amount and never considered what it really meant. Still getting a charged lemonade a day though.
I've been caffeine free for well over a decade at this point (I have horrible insomnia and the caffeine definitely doesn't help). When I quit I had a massive headache for around a month. After that I'm doing a lot better.
I totally forgot about that time in the mid 00s where caffeine was in everything and marketed to nerds and students. Caffeinated gum, candy, Bawls and other energy drinks were all the rage. I even remember caffeinated soap!
As someone who works at Panera, it is mandatory for us to tell customers that there is an insane of caffeine in the lemonade and we advise parents to not to let their children drink it. Even for myself, I limit how often I drink them and even then, I put half regular lemonade THEN the charged lemonade. Stay safe y’all.
If it's mandatory at your store that order is definitely not coming from corporate, it's just your management team being smart. I've worked at quite a few different stores in my panera franchise and not a single one requires you to give warnings, and honestly it would be really dumb to put something that important on employees at a company the regularly hires 16 year old. Panera definitely needs to be more up front about how much caffeine is in these. They are literally energy drinks. And really strong ones at that.
My sister worked at Panera and I remember her telling me something along the lines of "my coworkers would let the lemonade sit and then drink it and get high off of it"
Huge fan of lemonade here (I'm aware that's a weird sentence.) I am on the debate team at my school and we have a tradition of getting panera before or after our debate trips. Earlier this school year, we went and I was quite thirsty. So, being a lemonade fan, I decided that the strawberry lemonade looked so good. So, I drank a cup. Then another. Then another. Then half of another. We went and did our debate and I was feeling on top of the world but almost panicky. On the bus ride back, I felt like I was dying. As a caffeine addict, I'd say one cup throughout the day would be ok for most others in the same situation. However, I would not suggest drinking almost 4.
Me and my coworkers did a food trade with Panera once, and I was one of the few that didn't get a charged lemonade. The two guys who did get charged lemonades were both sick by the end of the night, and they both had to call into work the following day cuz it was the sickest they had been. And we know it wasn't the food cuz me and one other person were fine, and we both didn't have the lemonades. That stuff is crazy, and I wouldn't want to try it
Woahhh… my brother talked about how his friend told him he should order it and then after ordering it he saw the calories and milligrams of caffeine in it. His friend then said that she had one every day… I hope she don’t die.
"mitral valve prolapse" sounded scarily familiar to me. Oh, thats why. I have that. I've been a caffeine addict for a while now, and the last year or so I've been cutting back, two months ago decided to stop completely except for teas. Boy am I glad, and now I know why my body reacts to badly and intensely to caffeine
I drink a lot of these lipton peach iced tea, because it tastes good, but it has 20mg of caffeine, which actually helps a lot for waking up in the morning
I have a very random but extreme sensitivity to caffeine, sometimes I feel fine, sometimes I feel like I'm going to die. I honestly did not know refreshers had caffeine as it was something baristas would offer me as a caffeine free option 😭, I just assumed I was reacting to the sugar in the drinks. I would be offered Matcha on occasion too, but I was aware of the caffeine content. Obviously I try to be self responsible and read the labels, but dang, sometimes it is really hard to find. As well, the casual attitude around caffeine has definitely led me into issues. Especially when labels try to use other words to replace "caffeine" or when baristas neglect to take my "Caffeine free" request seriously, although thankfully this doesn't happen often. Thankfully I was aware of what "Charged" meant in the name of the lemonade but even then, I still almost serve it myself when I intend to just get lemonade lol
aaa i really appreciate this video - caffeine hardly affects me at all (folks with ADD, like myself, are known to be affected differently by caffeine), but that's why it'd be SO EASY for me to overdose on it without noticing if it was snuck into something i wouldn't expect to be caffeinated. this PSA is entirely necessary, thank u guys EDIT: lots of folks in the replies are talking abt how add/adhd can also result in caffeine making u drowsy, and this is also true !! i made my comment mostly to point out the issue i personally have with caffeine, but i could also see how it would be SO DANGEROUS to basically be taking a sedative without knowing. like, imagine DRIVING after that much caffeine if it makes u drowsy. YIKES
@3D Origami Slides oh man, that reminded me of why i stopped drinking tea with my stimulant adhd medication (i would do this on weekends only). I would feel like trash for hours since i had way too many stimilants inside me. I stopped drinking tea with my meds (unfortunate since it was really good tea) and i felt so much better than before.
@Lord-Lori i’ve got ADHD without the hyperactivity, which is sometimes called ADHD inattentive type, but i think that’s silly, because of COURSE i’m inattentive, i’m attention deficit !! so my psychiatrist and i just refer to what i have as ADD. really, it’s just the same disorder but with much less visible symptoms. hope that helps!
@Lord-Lori the terminology switched to just ADHD (although there is inattentive type, hyperactive type, or combined type within the ADHD umbrella). This took place I think sometime in the late 80s but it’s taken some time to fully catch on
Funny story about caffeine: My uncle worked at a warehouse that had free unlimited energy drinks one in a while, and he accidentally had 3 whole grams of caffeine, and he would grab 2 or 3 canos and run them across a warehouse drop em off and run back. He did that for 8 hours or so.
I remember in middle school, I had a caffeine spray and I thought it was cool, I showed it around, gave people a sprits or two, but every time i did i would give myself a spray, by lunch I was as red as a tomato and my heart was pounding. I ended up having to go to the hospital and get flushed with a solution.
I work at panera and they do not advertise the caffeine intake enough at all. there’s a teeny tiny sign that says the amount of caffeine but nobody reads them. I always make sure to tell people, especially when they have kids. I also drink like 3 larges to get through the day so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Im a teenager working at my local panera. Before I knew how much caffeine was in the drink, I chugged two cups and was completely mentally dysfunctional for hours after. I only buy them if I know I need to stay up for hours after I drink any of it. I have often warned my peers and any parents who come in, of the insane level of caffeine. It tastes great but please, be weary of how much you have,
As a Panera employee I’ve had to warn parents not to give their kids the charged lemonades.
could just say its an energy drink
Yeah I warned my own mother about it too
Thank you, Panera doesn’t deserve you :)
Me too
Hehe I was a kid once and my mom let me have the lemonade honestly I probably should've had the lemonade but my mom didn't say no so..
I remember hearing about a story of a guy who was accused of driving under the influence of drugs, even though he claimed that he had not. He said it was the noodles at a certain restaurant, though no one believed him. That restaurant was later found guilty of putting drugs in their noodles, making them addictive.
It was poppyseeds lol a bunch of popyseeds
I heard that story
some noodle restaurant put weed/MJ in their soup , at least in my country.
they says it make soup sweeter, idk i never had those .
what restaurant was that???
@雨宮寧音 opium
(Not trying to sound rude btw!) the caffeine is just so crazy high I just avoid it now 😓
you ever drink a red bull? its the same thing as those rebel drinks from dutch bros. nothing new
Same but with pre workout instead
Imagine someone with worse anxiety they could have a panic attack
Toddlers?? Jesus Christ
@Lilo Whitney true, red bull makes me sleepy and I thought people were exaggerating when they were acting like it was to stay up
Yeah I asked them what their most caffinated beverage was and they told me the refreshers were and I was so surprised
@Texan Elitesame here, but I only have 2 brain cells so you can imagine
@Texan Elite Going from 'Energy Drink' to 'this is literally the same as 4 energy drinks in one serving and btw would you like a refill?' is pretty vast. As you looked at those things, were you aware it counted as multiple espressos? Cause people don't instinctively look at the mg and think 'ah, I know exactly how much my normal coffees contain, I have a good grasp how this'll affect my body'.
People could also just use their brain and look at the label, and see what they are drinking instead of just drinking it and thinking its fine.
@Beardiemom I mean, i guess i dont have terrible withdrawls, but i think the fact that its my go to drink any time im thirsty is not a good thing
@dumm dumm You might, you might not. Some people have *awful* reactions on caffeine withdrawal, others don't even notice it.
as a caffine addict i agree with you. I drink at least one monster a day. but i dont know what would happen if i stop at this point.
zac what are you doing here
Wow, thanks for keeping us informed.. it’s actually crazy what these companies try to get away with just because “it’s legal”
@Thomas Sohocki
Reading and reading comprehension are 2 different things.
@Hdd Dgg Or... read the fucking clear as day sign lmfao. Like jfc, no personal accountability.
@Lucianna You killed the man, lmao
@mischievous grunk Likewise.
@Lucianna peep ur pf pic bruh, no need to argue
I'm honestly so happy you're talking about this. The FDA is suuuuper shady and nobody talks about it, especially in reference to caffeine.
My parents are hooked on these drinks because they have the Paneras sip club and they get it every day, and I've been warning them that it's not healthy for you to drink that much caffeine, and they just rub it off
We all need to rub it off sometimes ❤
I mean, that's just how addiction goes. You tell a cocaine addict that they're doing a dangerous amount of cocaine, they're just gonna shrug it off. You tell a heroin addict that they're doing a dangerous amount of heroin, they're just gonna shrug it off. Someone that's addicted most likely isn't gonna slow down their roll just cause someone else said it's dangerous, it usually takes some kind of consequence in their life to slap them in the face and make them aware of the danger they're putting themselves in.
Yeah I stay away from these charged drinks....I just go with their iced green tea
When I had 1st joined the sips club I was in on charged lemonade but I had to take a break from all that borderline caffeine overload lol smh
@Shiota and then they Rub it off , not Rub it on
@Nick They rub *one* off. Not rub it off.
As muffet always says. "When life gives you lemons. Market them as yellow oranges and sell them for triple the price."
@hinoka's 1# Arab fan 😎 picture
@Um Canal Aleatório me all because you couldn’t see life’s manager
no you should create combustible lemons and burn life's house down with it
I remember seeing a tiktok where someone in the comments mentioned their Panera moved the charged lemonades behind the counter to limit refills, not cause of the drink costs but because people were doing what Sarah was doing and drinking 3+ in a sitting, not knowing how much they were consuming, and that was how I learned they were caffeinated at all.
@Horrible Kellible K-i-d. As in not understanding things
But it is labeled…. You wouldn’t have died because if literally has a label that states it has caffeine
@xSpoody exactly
Lie
Yesss a lot of us did
It is sad that the company doesn’t recommend employees do that
Also, from one caffeine lover to another, Matt: THANK YOU.
@PrincessLovelorn
Learning the tools to better protect your health is the best kind of skill someone can learn.
@PrincessLovelorn
This is a pure opinion I am about to puke out. I believe it's a mix of not having much public knowledge about food and nutrition and companies taking some sense of advantage of that. Though there are many variables here.
@Vaporean_BoyLove.0w0 agreed, altho thats a legislation issue, not a panera issue
@PrincessLovelorn
So if dyslexia isn't the issue, then it's people not knowing how much caffeine is bad for you.
I don't drink much caffeine but when I do it doesnt do anything I might stay up 30-1 hour late but thats it
I also had never any stay awake effect of caffeine but since I didnt have a benfit from it at all, I stopped taking it as far as possible. The only time I willingly intake it is when I have a bad headache: espresso, sugar plus Lemon Juice is a very good pain reliefer for these cases
@Lizard Diamond can you give me all the common symptoms of adhd?
No way I would think lemonade had caffeine let alone more than ten monsters 😳.
same and i love panera if i actually drank this i would probably need to go to the hospital for my colon exploding
@mrsnaki That can cause a lot of health problems in the baby
@Bad dog everyone makes mistakes. Besides this will help the ( I think new ) mother be much more cautious next time ⚠️ don't be too harsh on them
Should probably look at ingredients before you put something in your body instead of just assuming something, I feel sorry for your child already 🤦♂️
@Dae The average consumer who isn't watching a video explicitly designed to teach them about this barely knows if caffeine should be measured in grams or milligrams, nevermind how much is irregular. That's the big problem with just throwing a number at someone like it means anything without context.
Whaaaa whaaaa
as a panera employee, i usually tell the parents of kids when i see the kids serve themselves some. But its sad to say that i drink so much of these just to stay awake that i dont really feel more awake after drinking cups of it.
I have a mitral valve prolapse and I've always been sensitive to caffeine... this is terrifying. I'll always be checking labels and asking from now on when I order things
i have the same condition!! too much caffeine puts me in so much pain and makes my heart race and skip so so much
I used to work at Panera, it does have lots of caffeine.
@Riley Bittle surprising. I'd still drink it
Does the knowledge stop them from getting it?
Yeppp
College students went crazy when these first came out cause we were all looking for extreme caffeine levels lol
I find it does work better if you’re ADHD, but in general get the pharma study drugs.
the engineering college at my school has it and you KNOW it was selling like hot cakes
As a university student that has developed a quasi-Monster Energy addiction in later years, I have to admit, I wanted a sip of this ever since I hard of the caffeine contents XD
Just get the assassin preworkout. 600 grams of caffeine
It's funny cause it's still less than a lot of pre workouts. It's why when I tried them, I didn't feel much.
As someone who is sensitive to Caffeine, and has a sister who is as well and loves lemonade this is terrifying and super worrying
This is insane! I have heart related issues and that lemonade could probably put me in a lot of pain-
As someone who has heart conditions, I was interested in this.
@Shamyra Saved by his Amazing Grace 🔥 I was giving statics
@Erik Burzinski The Lord is the one that has the Power to increase or decrease life. It’s up to the Lord! Not caffeine.
You should do a theory on what percentage of people take their cup home after eating at a fast food place
as a worker at panera, we had the lemonades moved back behind the counter so it’s easier to warn people
I don't know if I'm the only person, but I use these theories the same way Sarah used those charged lemonades.
@Neil Stone A soda yeah but these things have the caffeine of an energy drink which are not recommended for kids
Why can't kids drink them? Soda has caffeine
Your theory is real. I remember I walked into Panera once and sat down. I was waiting for my food and happen to notice something. Everyone had that exact lemonade drink. I had Atleastq counted 13 people with that drink. It weirded me out a bit but now it all makes sense
100% agree with this
on a similar note, i realized after a month or two that i'd been drinking iced coffee when i am not a coffee drinker ever, it straight up wasn't labeled as coffee, simply "iced matcha"
Yeaa I quit tooo and I had to the samee
Welcome to America 😂.
@Orion Hunter ohh mhm ty
@ruru rurururururururururu idk, advertising something?
@Orion Hunter whats the link in banner for?
As someone who is extremely addicted to caffeine, I make sure to read labels very thoroughly to make sure that I am drinking less than 400 mg of caffeine. I can probably still handle one of these lemonades, but that's pretty much it. I get very jittery after like 500 or 600, which is way above the recommended safe levels of caffeine.
I used to work near Panera and got their beverage club so I could pop in and grab their green tea on break and drink it for a few hours, when the charged lemonades came out I used to add a little bit of it, 1/4 of my cup at most
Kinda glad I didn’t get more that that at a time 😬
i work at panera bread and im 100% sure there should always be labels showing how much caffeine and calories there are in every cup size cuz thats how my panera do it💀
Thank you for making this video!
@Togas Nightcores You never mentioned Panera you just said good tasting drink loaded with caffeine never said Panera name and you never mentioned Them not making it obvious it was energy drink and other people were talking about caffeine itself not the Panera situation so I confused you with one of them but that’s my bad and I watched the video it has 1.7 million views the company Panera could at least put out a statement in two days that’s what I was asking have they put out a statement in the two days this vids been up
@Official Crackhead just watch the video? MattPad literally answered your below question. I was exclusively referring to Paneras strategy
Yeah I just drank a large charged lemonade. I’m ready to do my college work.
I'd totally drink this for my university projects
I can't believe I used to drink monster energy drinks multiple times a day, that's crazy 😭 glad I'm ok tbo
C4 energy drinks also are available
999 likes to 1k ur welcome
@UwUperson9987 I have to imagine you are looking just a little bit harder than most people are, and it was literally on the pouring label that it had caffeine and the exact amount. I would imagine you would have to be being pretty flippant to purchase a product called charged lemonade and pour it from a thing that says it has caffeine and the exact amount to get snuck up on by that
@J F true! It helped initially but probably just hastened the eventual hypokalemia. I don’t recommend doing what I did!🤣
Just get caffeine pills eat 3 at a time problem solved
Dang, I love those lemonades, and I knew how much caffeine was in them, but I still always felt that a Monster had more or at least the same amount and never considered what it really meant.
Still getting a charged lemonade a day though.
Easily one of my favorite Food theory videos. Heck, theory videos!
I even remember caffeinated soap!
as someone who is very sensitive and is probably allergic to caffeine i cannot even fathom what is going to happen to my bathroom if i drink this
As someone who works at Panera, it is mandatory for us to tell customers that there is an insane of caffeine in the lemonade and we advise parents to not to let their children drink it.
Im gonna drink 30 cups of charged lemonade >:)
My sister worked at Panera and I remember her telling me something along the lines of "my coworkers would let the lemonade sit and then drink it and get high off of it"
Must be location Based. I've never been told I HAVE to warn people but I usually do. The sugar content is insane too!
Thankfully I was aware of what "Charged" meant in the name of the lemonade but even then, I still almost serve it myself when I intend to just get lemonade lol
aaa i really appreciate this video - caffeine hardly affects me at all (folks with ADD, like myself, are known to be affected differently by caffeine), but that's why it'd be SO EASY for me to overdose on it without noticing if it was snuck into something i wouldn't expect to be caffeinated. this PSA is entirely necessary, thank u guys
EDIT: lots of folks in the replies are talking abt how add/adhd can also result in caffeine making u drowsy, and this is also true !! i made my comment mostly to point out the issue i personally have with caffeine, but i could also see how it would be SO DANGEROUS to basically be taking a sedative without knowing. like, imagine DRIVING after that much caffeine if it makes u drowsy.
Yeah, coffee and some teas make me pass out for a few hours lol. And its always terrible sleep. Thats why i try to not drink much caffeine.
This took place I think sometime in the late 80s but it’s taken some time to fully catch on
I’m the 1k like I just wanted to say that
Funny story about caffeine: My uncle worked at a warehouse that had free unlimited energy drinks one in a while, and he accidentally had 3 whole grams of caffeine, and he would grab 2 or 3 canos and run them across a warehouse drop em off and run back.
The absolute definition of “too much of anything is bad for you”! Great vid ❤
As a Panera employee, the amount of times I tell people to be careful of those lemonades is ridiculous
It tastes great but please, be weary of how much you have,
Yeppp
With that much caffeine, you won't be weary at all. But you may want to be wary.
@Viper I’m 14 too and I can’t handle one
This that drink hit you hard you weak lol
It's basicly one and a half redbull. Nothing to freak out about...
This makes me want to drink one even more.
It’s like a little game.
As someone who literally _just_ took one sip of this lemonade. You can _taste_ the bitterness of the caffeine.
This is horrifying, thank you for spreading awareness
There are energy drinks, mostly coffee ones, that contain 300 mg of caffeine in the same size can as regular energy drinks... they are pretty smooth
