We were able to get a sand bed for my grandma when she was paralyzed so she wouldn't develop bed sores, and it's the coolest thing ever. It feels almost like water with how loose it is.
When I first broke my neck and had a spinal cord injury when I was fifteen one of the things used to combat pressure and bed sores was a bed which utilized very similar technology called a Clinitron Bed. You literally floated with no excessive pressure points anywhere. I also saw they were utilized in severe burn injuries as well as multi-extremity infection and swelling. I know for me it initially saved my skin for the five days I used it until my traction achieved reduction of my two fractured cervical vertebrae and I was stabilized for my surgery. When I awoke I used a RotoRest bed which rotated from flat to ninety degrees and then back the other way to promote the exchange of fluids in your respiratory system. Anyway it was a brilliant invention and one that I know back in 1986 cost my BCBS insurance over $1,000/day which back then was HUGE!
...I commented on this vid 5 years ago. But I'm here to comment again thanks to your collab with Brandon. I'd love to see you tackle creating a fluidized bed with different color sands to mimic Brandon's spore seas.
Recently I watched an episode of Smarter Every Day that talked about how Kodak makes film. When they mentioned injecting nitrogen into the pellet storage tank to fluidize it I was like: "I KNOW HOW THAT WORKS!" Thanks, Mark!
This seems a lot like something I've been looking for. Can you replace gravity with an elastic skin, and replace the sand with something with enough friction that you can pose or mould when it's fluidized, but otherwise have it retain its shape under the tension of the skin? So that you have something you can turn to putty with the flick of a switch, and then lock in place by switching it back off again?
This is definitely awesome dude! I love your creativity and attitude that sparks most of your videos. Not only do you care about the planet, you are a pretty darn cool uncle lol
How safe or unsafe is it to accidentally breath that sand (glass beads, I think you said?) in? Water can eventually be reabsorbed by the body, but the body can not absorb glass.
When I was nursing, in the early 70s, some genius developed a burn victim bed so they could be comfortable & conform to their bodies when turned off! Such a fantastic idea!
Not only is the fluidized bed cool, the test size in the beginning actually briefly created a rainbow when a thin layer of sand was 'splashed' into the air!
1st off, love this video. So fun. I saw this a couple of years ago, and I come back to it frequently. Anyways, there are a bunch of videos on sand batteries on KZclip these days. Trending with all the other alternative energy options. And I thought of this video. Wouldn’t it be great to combine the two ideas. My thought is along the lines of heat pumps. What if the heated sand could be moved, stored, and then moved again to transfer the energy. What better way to move sand than to have it in a liquid state. Food for thought.
Does the overall volume in the tub increase as a result of the air surrounding each grain of sand? Would this same effect be created in a sealed container?
Is it possible to scale this up further? Like could you make a "sand row boat" where you could make a boat float over sand dunes as you go? How hard would it be to scale it up further and also find a way to make the compressed air manually? I think you see where Im going with this. Could the pyramids have been made this way as far as stone transporting.
@Link Up Jamaica It's not a matter of transparency, it's a matter of dispersion. You see the same thing on the shiny side of a CD, even though that's not transparent.
This is so much fun! In high school we invented a creature called a desert dolphin that swam through the sand like water. If there was a place on earth that naturally had these conditions, that could be a real thing! 🐬
This is so cool. Makes me wonder if maybe there are planets out there that, due to some gases being released under suface, have literally oceans of liquid sand. Maybe with some weird creatures swimming in them just like in Dune.
I was thinking the same thing. I visited White Sands, New Mexico and you're absolutely correct. It didn't matter if you showered or not. That sand can get inside the hoo-hah and cause a very uncomfortable situation.
Hi Mark, I’m in the process of making a continuously operating liquid sand hot tub based on your video. Do you happen to remember what was the air flow and working pressure in your case? Thank you in advance.
Revisiting this after reading "Tress of the Emerald Sea," a story set in a world where the oceans are made of dust and underground vents are constantly releasing gas to fluidize it.
I wonder if it’s possible to make a boat that can ride through deserts by vibrating the sand underneath it and propellers probably way too much money though.
This guy has the coolest job on the planet. All because He is educated and super smart. There’s tons of people like this that could do all of these things but he was smart enough to put it in video format like this on KZclip. I wonder how much this guy is worth.
Registered nurse here. We actually use this technique in specialized hospital beds that use aerated sand to reduce the friction and shear that causes pressure ulcers. Think of a water bed but filled with aerated sand instead.
I love how you are educating humans in an age of stupidity. I am 54yrs young and always felt luke I was missing my nose. You found it!! Earth science is making a come-back. Keep making it real Mark! Love it!!!
Ok this is seriously cool! I'd love to see how that feels! Bet Those kids had sand in places for weeks! Ever try to get sand out of your hair?!? It takes forever to finally get it all out....ugh it's the worst! Bet they had a blast though!
*Am I the only one who wishes he was my science teacher?*
Nope
No I love this channel ❤
He's not going to be my science teacher cuz I want to be a cardiac surgeon you need a medical science teacher
Not really I'd rather him as like an uncle or something
No
I’m an ICU nurse and I’ve seen beds that use this technology to help patients with pressure ulcers. It’s like laying on a cloud.
Where can I get this, that sounds amazing
Yep it's like a cushion bed but it's not just use for ulcers it's also used for many other pains
Hihihihi
Imagine you're just chilling on the beach and then all of a sudden you're waist deep in sand water.
. *Sounds like an episode of just for laughs.*
real quick sand
😢
@mega gatling pea you must be a fun party person
Is it just me or does that sand look delicious?
@Addisyn Taylor and i look like wipped cream but nobody wants to eat me
@cheesychez THAT SAND LOOKS LIKE WHIPPED CREEEEAAAAMMM
what kind of theripy do you need?
. *So you're that kid.*
Yes
I love how mark rober makes science so fun yet educated he’s just the best
True
@Kaybones yeah it's really cool how he makes it interesting
Same here guy
We were able to get a sand bed for my grandma when she was paralyzed so she wouldn't develop bed sores, and it's the coolest thing ever. It feels almost like water with how loose it is.
That hot tub is terrifying imagine if you were underneath when the air turned off
Population control
Id hate to take breath full of sand
Just what I was thinking when I saw that part
[Playername] Suffocated in a wall
idk who would want to be underneath tho
Nephew: Uncle Mark still isn't my favorite uncle!
Mark: "turns off air when nephew goes under"
Mark: NOW WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE UNCLE!?!?!?!?
Lol😂😂😂💀💀
Nephew:
"+100 uncle points"
*wet blubbering
NOOOOOO

@Silas Abbott Great PSA to not choose toxic partners
@kaiyote ty
@Silas Abbott that’s a major yikes i’m sorry that happened
@Silas Abbott that’s a major yikes i’m sorry that happened
Two words how my mom broke her neck
My dad

You leave no chance for the other uncles, Mark! Look how happy they are! You're amazing! 👏👏👏
@Magia dos Livrinhos your comments give off pure kindness.
@kaiden sweet Hahaha... that's true, Kaiden! They're both my favourite, Jimmy and Mark! Always making someone feel better! ❤
mrbeast has a chance if he were an uncle
This is so amazing! I've never seen anything like it and you even share how to do it! Thank you!
Mark: wants to be favourite uncle
Kids: all want to be spiderman
Mark: * *_intense sweating_* *
More like the smart uncle
I cried when the uncle died in the movie
Nuuu T^T don't remind me of what happened
I get it XD.. But I don't see how that's my problem. (ba dum tsh)
Hell do it tho that’s the scary thing...
I swear, listening to mark explaining buoyancy force is a fun way is better than listening to the teacher in a boring way
Recently I watched an episode of Smarter Every Day that talked about how Kodak makes film. When they mentioned injecting nitrogen into the pellet storage tank to fluidize it I was like: "I KNOW HOW THAT WORKS!"

when you're enjoying the video but suddenly mark bites your head off with science 😭😭
@Harsh Vardhan Living nerd emoji
@Harsh Vardhan hmm.. every boy at my school
You are crayz he can never tho that
@Nez it just does. You won't get it.
@Harsh Vardhan Why does it have to do with gender?
I feel like you would be a great physics teacher.
Yeah he explains things in a way thats easy to understand and simple! PERFECT for a teacher...
He is
I wish he wasmy science teacher

I would love to build this sometime...
this is epic!
Not only is the fluidized bed cool, the test size in the beginning actually briefly created a rainbow when a thin layer of sand was 'splashed' into the air!
I want a "boiling" sand decoration for my room. That would be cool.
Alternate title: How to hide a body easily.
@Laura Taylor that's cold
Hold up
Ayo?
🤨
Yep
Knock knock. It’s the FBI. We just want to ask you a few questions…
*JUST KIDDING GET ON THE GROUND*
We all probably can say Mark teaches more useful and makes it better to explain stuff than science in school
*"I hate sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it just gets everywhere."*
That last part is SOOOOOOO accurate
1st off, love this video. So fun. I saw this a couple of years ago, and I come back to it frequently. Anyways, there are a bunch of videos on sand batteries on KZclip these days. You should have your own public tv show or be a teacher. You make science fun and more engaging. It kind of reminds me of Bill Neil tv show
Does the overall volume in the tub increase as a result of the air surrounding each grain of sand? Would this same effect be created in a sealed container?
Imagine going to a beach and this guy just show's up and pushes a fluidizing button
Pool time!!!
the desert
Weeeee
@ Channel ,
how 2 drown someone in sand
your nephews will be so proud of you mark knowing that you are such a great scientist
This is definitely one of Mark Rober's BEST videos of all time.
Is it possible to scale this up further? Like could you make a "sand row boat" where you could make a boat float over sand dunes as you go? I want to make an ocean out of this and try to sail on it. I’ll forego the spores that turn into vines the size of a tree if you get them wet, though.
1:33
How beautiful!
The way the sand captures the light to make the rainbow!
I love sand rainbows :)
Sand is just a very small prism
@Link Up Jamaica It's not a matter of transparency, it's a matter of dispersion. You see the same thing on the shiny side of a CD, even though that's not transparent.
I didn’t even see that that’s so cool
It is not a sand rainbow btw
🤯 how though? I thought we get rainbows after light passes THROUGH a droplet
Your videos inspire me to work hard no mater what I’m doing and I love learning how to do things you just make it easy to learn about science
I love this video because I am a powder coater and I see this effect everyday always wanted to hear it explained in detail
This is so much fun! In high school we invented a creature called a desert dolphin that swam through the sand like water. If there was a place on earth that naturally had these conditions, that could be a real thing! 🐬
Yall, this dude is totally awesome.
How the heck did nobody get an eyeful of sand??? I would have been so paranoid.
Same
Eyelashes
Idk
U made me paranoid with this comment.
@Zaya yeah, I bet it really burns a lot of men's labias as they scrub it off. 🙄
I don’t understand how GameTheory and his other channels and you are able to explain science in a non boring way, Keep It Up 👍
Honestly though mark makes it fun to learn the science
I love how when this guy teaches science he actually makes sence.
This is so cool. Makes me wonder if maybe there are planets out there that, due to some gases being released under suface, have literally oceans of liquid sand. Maybe with some weird creatures swimming in them just like in Dune.
read Tress of the Emerald Sea if you want seas like that
Yur a genius
Honestly I don’t find the science parts boring I found a really cool to see how this actually works
Everyone gangsta until the pool hardens around you
@Jeff Anderson Legends say he is still gaming to this day.
And ur under it
Sand coffin
WHO EDITED THIS COMMENT!!!!!!!?
😂
Mark rober is the only one to ever use quantum physics for a hot tub
Mark looks like a happy kid in a pool ❤
what a great video, thank you for explaining the science behind it
ive watched this so many times yet every time its still so satisfying
The ultimate prank: do this to a beach
WAIT IS THIS A QUICK SAND BEACH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQQQ
A Backyard beach?
Pov: you fall asleep first at the beach sleepover
TRUE
Flicks lever* “On off on off. This is fun!” Meanwhile, at the nearest beach “ I’m sinking! No I’m not. I’m sinking! No I’m not. I’m stuck!!!”
Dude we need science lessons from this guy. We will no longer be sleeping in class, but we will be listening attentively lol 😂
We had a demo with a similar setup but smaller scale many years ago and it feels really surreal
I don’t know if I’m scared or impressed but it does look pretty spectacular and pretty cool too
I stared at how satisfying the sand is and started drooling 🤤
to be honest being a kid with Mark as your uncle it’s basically a dream….
Ok but I’d imagine after being in this, you’ll be picking sand out of unholy places for weeks.
Somewhere Anakin is getting angry seeing this
I was thinking the same thing. I visited White Sands, New Mexico and you're absolutely correct. It didn't matter if you showered or not. That sand can get inside the hoo-hah and cause a very uncomfortable situation.
@kintsugi kame I don’t know if you know you can’t put that much sand down your drain
@VERNON Takes a L •wmgc• what about underneath
Months*
The fact that it freezes when the air is turned off too is insane
Making a mini sand tub like this has been in the back of my mind since I was 12
imagine having like a massive pool of this, swimming to the bottom, and then someone turns off the air.
This is the first video I watched of Mark. It’s nice going back in memories
I think this would be more of a pain in the butt than a normal hot tub would be.
When you want to chill in a hot tub but don't want to get wet.
It's all fun and games until it stops working
No no he’s got a point
The cat will have fun
Nueve
@ir1s then you must hate beaches
This reminds me of the swamps that are almost like trampolines on solid ground. Great video!
That is a bog. The kind you are specifically talking about is known as a quaking bog.
I love both the experiment and your approach on forcing people with science.
This is amazing, what a great teacher. But they’re going to have sand in places where sand probably shouldn’t go lol
this gives me the quicksand willies but at the same time is ultimately satisfying
There’s no way he’s NOT the favorite uncle.
True
Hi
What about lazarbeam?
True
@james fry why did your uncle(s) do to you? Just cuz your uncle messed up in the mind doesn’t mean everyone is
You’ve invented dry water, but you will never convince me water isn’t wet.
I’ve learned more science from you than my whole entire time at school
If you where to increase the force of the air could you do this at a beach(to accommodate the bigger sand particles)
Weird how their isn't a lot of this online before Mark got into this in detail
Hi Mark,
I’m in the process of making a continuously operating liquid sand hot tub based on your video. Do you happen to remember what was the air flow and working pressure in your case?
Thank you in advance.
I’m jealous that these kids have such a cool uncle
idk how he isnt the favorite uncle already
Who wouldn’t be jealous
same
Same
@Alfred Hitchcook why don't you go away?
I bet it would be awesome to have a dad like mark rober
This could be one of the future death traps where you have to swim in sand but before it turns solid
That would be so cool
Revisiting this after reading "Tress of the Emerald Sea," a story set in a world where the oceans are made of dust and underground vents are constantly releasing gas to fluidize it.
@Dicey If you look on Brandon Sanderson's channel, he actually did a short collab video with Mark about fluidization a couple of weeks ago
ooh! sounds interesting, I'm definitely giving that one a read!
question: could you make a pool sized version of this master piece?
I wonder if it’s possible to make a boat that can ride through deserts by vibrating the sand underneath it and propellers probably way too much money though.
Definition of a _cool_ uncle: He let's you throw cinderblocks into his hot tub fluidized air bed.
@Lil_Orbits💫 hes just singing one of mark rober's song that he uses
@Robot Zombie well it isnt quick sand
@Mads4it i wanna be his son
@Mads4it he has a kid
Yup
That's a lotta fun, especially if the sand is warm.
This guy has the coolest job on the planet. All because He is educated and super smart. There’s tons of people like this that could do all of these things but he was smart enough to put it in video format like this on KZclip. I wonder how much this guy is worth.
Legends say he is still finding sand in places he didn't even know existed
mark explains more interestingly than my biology teacher
I would love him as a science teacher
I learn more and am being entertained more by a man who uploads once a month than my chemistry teacher, who I see 5 days a week.
Lol me 2
my biggest fear is sitting in a yellow box full of tennis rackets with Michael B Jordan eating tuna fish drinking mtn dew
I swear you are everywhere. You got good taste
OK jellal
Registered nurse here. We actually use this technique in specialized hospital beds that use aerated sand to reduce the friction and shear that causes pressure ulcers. Think of a water bed but filled with aerated sand instead.
i feel like im the only person who watches these videos for the science lol its just really cool to see how things work
its crazy how this was 5 years ago but still feels like the new ones
DUDE I want to have a pool of this so badly!
5 years since this came out let’s see how many people have come back to watch how to make sand into liquid!
This guy just gives you a 10-15 minute science lesson which I learn more than a 50 min period at school
Anon Anon looking at his channel prob middle or primary school teachers
Honestly yes
ikr
Its also very entertaining
Well, you are comparing high-school teachers to a scientist who worked for 7yrs on a Mars rover at NASA...
Legend has it that he s still washing out the sand to this day
Nephew:
*Goes under the sand*
Mark:
*Turns air off*
Uh oh
I love how you are educating humans in an age of stupidity. I am 54yrs young and always felt luke I was missing my nose. You found it!! Earth science is making a come-back. Keep making it real Mark! Love it!!!
Dang I wish I grow up and one of my siblings will become like mark
Imagine if you did this 1000 times so the beach could be like this lol
“Sorry if the science behind this bore you”
Me at 2am: I must know how this works.
I’ve watched it about ten times now lol
It's 2:11 and this is suddenly super pertinent to my existence.
@Donna Zaporojenco lol
Mom: wait what are you doing.
Me: finding answers.
Mom: to what?
Me: **shows video**
Mom: ok.
Apex Legends
Ok this is seriously cool! I'd love to see how that feels! Bet Those kids had sand in places for weeks! Ever try to get sand out of your hair?!? It takes forever to finally get it all out....ugh it's the worst! Bet they had a blast though!
