In my experience, every truck I’ve had (GM products) included the trailer brake controller with the towing package. I’d give them a difficult time if it wasn’t included.
@Tyrfing🗡 You can still get a sub $25k Maverick truck. My upgraded Mav hybrid that I show in videos on my channel only cost $27,050. Order a 2024MY this fall from a dealer that charges msrp.
I think we need cheaper low end trucks. Ram sells the Big Horn model more than any other line of the Ram because it's one step over the base Tradesman model because you get a few nicer things but doesn't make the truck astronomical. Problem is it's still expensive. I feel that the guy who actually needs a truck and can only afford one vehicle pays for the people that want that ultra luxury models. Truck manufacturers have to have so many truck lines and crazy luxury features that it gets so expensive for them to try to appeal to everyone that it drives the prices up. If you get a more basic truck it would be lighter and get better fuel mileage. I don't need a complicated twin turbo with variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Give us that tried and true V8 that will run for ever. Easy to fix for allot less complicated to work on yourself. Will pull a trailer and get reasonable fuel mileage because it doesn't weigh so much because of panoramic sunroof, mini fridge, power side Steps and on and on. Great video guys.
The more luxurious the truck the larger the profit margin, so it’s actually the opposite. The people buying the luxury trims are paying for the people wanting a stripped down model.
68 years old here and have owned all of the big three. I saw the myth busters video back when also and I remember being completely mystified when they got no difference in gas mileage with a tonneau cover in they’re test. They were wrong! The length of the cab roof as well as the bed length absolutely make a difference in mileage with and without a tonneau cover. The worst gas mileage without a tonneau cover is a regular cab with an 8 foot bed. The wind goes over the cab and down in the bed hitting the tailgate causing strong resistance. A crew cab roof with a short bed allows the majority of the wind flowing over the roof to miss the tailgate causing less wind resistance thereby improving gas mileage. Again, cab length and bed length make a difference. That said, add a tonneau cover and mileage will improve as there is no resistance from the wind against the tailgate. Think of the tailgate as a parachute. Also, to the point about the trailer brake, I bought a 2020 Ram Bighorn with the level 2 pkg which includes the towing pkg. My truck is capable of towing just over 11,000 lbs with the 5.7 and 3:92 ratio yet no trailer brake! Makes no sense.
The complaints you guy’s get are hilarious, everything is a conspiracy I guess. Thanks for keeping it real and I appreciate your humility and transparency.
I could care less about tires my biggest issue is with all truck brands is that the only way you can get a performance package truck is to have it fully loaded interior. Like the Raptor, TRX and the new ZR2 can only be bought with luxury interior packs. I want a more so base model truck with the offroad performance option. I don't want a truck that has a 18k interior package to take offroad. I want rubber flooring manual cloth seats but a nice head unit with the camera options.
Great segment. Love the 'stubby' road tests. I found it very enlightening on where the mileage numbers were impacted, Real world stats. The mirror test was absolutely eye-opening, 6 mpg difference was insane. I never would have thought it would be that much between tow and standard mirrors. I recently upgraded my 2003 2500HD from OEM accordion tow mirrors, to a 2006-2007 style tow mirror because of continuous issues with the original mirrors. Makes me wonder how much affect they will have with the Duramax power train.
My problem is you order one option package all of a sudden they say oh you can't get that package unless you get this option package. Lol I remember when my dad ordered his 1970 C/K 20 and seeing him run down a list and checked the box on the individual options he wanted 😂. A lot less options back then but still. When I order my 2021 Colorado I ordered it bare bones with the V6. I added what I wanted either dealer installed or aftermarket and got the truck I really wanted.
Agree with your grievances! Love the videos and merry Christmas! I would be curious to see if there is a mpg savings on leaving the tailgate down versus open.
For the audio system to sound great it has to be tuned to the particular truck model, with particular accessory packages, or else it will be subpar due to funny absorption and reflection issues particular to that truck.
I had the b&o unleashed on my ‘22 tremor and found the sound to be hollow feeling unless it was very loud. Even then the audio resolution was ok at best. Took it to a local audio shop and they get it sounding precise now. I had to pay a lot to replace the system because it’s so proprietary
One feature I would love to see on pickups is dual fuel fillers where I can put fuel in on both sides. I would like to clerify that one main tank with a left and right filler necks. I agree that the twin tank setups in the 70’s and 80’s were not reliable because of the switchover valve malfunctioning.
@Ronald King it's easier to package two smaller tanks under the truck than one large one. My F-250 has two tanks a slightly larger one that runs long ways beside the drive shaft and a smaller one that is where the spare tire would go. Would have been very difficult to make one tank large enough to hold all 43 gallons and still fit it underneath the truck.
@Ronald King he said that’s what he wants. Not necessarily talking about what ford used to do. Could be done. Bean counters probably won’t see the ROI.
@Big Billy Ray Fan Gas tanks pressurize. That means there are two points for the fumes to leave. Do you believe that the initial designers didn't try a single tank? I guess it could technically be that they didn't want to make a larger tank, but that still didn't change. It could have been it was cheaper to use two of the part they could get, but that is two of all parts for the tank.
It's kind of overrated. It requires a fuel switch, and unfortunately, that fuel switch can fail, and it did in at least the '80's truck my dad owned. In cold weather, the truck essentially had one fuel tank.
Quick note, the ranger has a brake controler with the tow package as of 2022. I wanted to order a new ranger with the tow package and even put a deposit on one. So... I ordered a blue XL ranger with the tow package, equipment package, and copilot 360. The equipment package was a need for me since it gave you cruise, an alarm, power mirrors, and the ability to get copilot among other things that the XL doesn't come with. I waited months because the chips for that equipment package were in short supply and Ford wasn't even letting you order an XL equipment package truck. I had a deposit down but when the dealer tried to order it, Ford kicked it back saying "yeah you can't have one of those". So I waited and waited and ultimately was told they just aren't going to make that available since they'd rather sell me an XLT and make more money, word for word that's the explanation I was given for why I didn't have that truck in my driveway. So I looked at the possible price difference and configured the way I want it, the price difference was about 2k... But I didn't like the way it looked, the XL in blue had black panels that gives it a cool two tone and the XLT paints those all to match the body unless you spend another 2k for the sport appearance package. So hold on, I've gotta spend 4k more than I originally wanted to in order to get the truck I want and 2k of that is to make it look like the XL you won't sell me??? I gave up, got my deposit back and bought a used ram 1500. Don't think I'll ever give Ford another chance after that one
Not sure if this is true, but I did read this somewhere a long time ago. In the old Ford line-up, the XL trim was applied to their cars. It stood for Extra Lively. They later applied it to their trucks as XLT for Extra Lively Truck.
Cant wait for the airdam video. They do help increase fuel economy, but on it's own the difference may not be noticeable. I'll happily continue to run mine, the aesthetic isnt enough to sway me to remove it.
You guys are great 👍🏻 Tires, I agree, I have a 07 Toyota Tundra, 2WD, I don’t abuse it at all, but only got 28,000 miles on original tires, hasn’t gotten much better over the years. I’m on my 5 set of tires at 137,000 miles
Cooper Discoverer 285 R 16 tires have lasted about 50k each set on my 2004 GMC 2500 HD Duramax. About 10k towing in 200k driving. First set of Michelins went about 45k.
The towing marketing wars are to the point were it is creating a degree of unsafe situations on the road. I have have multiple conversations with f150 drivers that are absolutely convinced thy can tow 13-15k and Looking to purchase a 5th wheel camper.
LED headlights should be the standard on all new trucks and cars sold, they are safer and last longer then Halaogen bulbs. Plus they look better at night.
The seat belt alarm in my Tacoma drives me nuts. I have car seats in the back so I usually end up stacking groceries on the passenger seat then the truck thinks there's someone sitting there without their belt on so it has to yell at me all the way home. I have to remember to buckle the seatbelt before loading groceries.
for good all terains, I highly recommend falken wildpeak AT3s. I do moderate offroading, a lot of street, and occasional heavy load in the bed. I'm over 30k miles into the expected 55k life and still plenty of tread. Rotate regularly with oil changes.
I've got one for you. Why don't manufacturers offer trailering mirrors standard in a max tow packages (halftons). Upgraded mirrors aren't Even standard on upper trim levels. Instead you get a flat mirror without even a blind spot dome. Also, with Chevy only the High Country can you get 4W low and the max trailer package.
When I got my F150 Lariat it had the standard mirror with BLIS and flat glass. Boy did I ever miss my XLT with the convex portion of mirror! Bought tow mirrors for it and wouldn't go any other way.
OMG! The laugh I got when Nathan mentioned a reminder voice for a car like Mr. T and his impressions! Hahahahaha. Thank You! To your point the safety reminders need to change!!
My experience with GM’s chip shortage, last May, 2022, I bought a 2022 Chevy Silverado RST ‘Refresh’. With the pandemic, I figured I’d treat myself and help the auto industry too. How crazy! The ‘new’ truck had the same issues as TFL’s ZR2; no working seat heater or heated steering wheel. At the time the salesman said they expected to have the chips by August, 2022. Instead, in August I received an email from Chevy saying it’ll be a while longer… but no date given! Here we are in January and I finally received a call from the dealer saying they’re going to install the seat heater module on January 8th…But! What about the heated steering wheel? They don’t know! No clue whatsoever! I should point out that I’m in Upstate NY… and it’s mid-winter! I know GM can do better! They should definitely work on making their own chips so this nonsense doesn’t happen again. Rest assured, I’ll never fall for such a scheme again.
Great video, guys! Lots of good stuff to ponder. My biggest peeves with pickup trucks are: 1. Why are trim levels and options so different between Canada and the USA? Why aren't they aligned???? It makes no sense to be so disparate; and you've gotta believe that they would save a boatload of money by aligning them as much as legally possible. 2. Insufficient payload. They could easily improve the true payload on each truck; and they need to meet their payload targets taking into account a full can off occupants, NOT subtract them from the payload! In other words, if there are five seats in the cab, estimate 250 lbs per WORKMAN for a total of 1250 lbs for the cab; and THEN design the truck to allow for an additional 2000 lbs (for example) of true payload. That would be realistic.
I wish they would let you order lower trim levels with the adaptive led headlights, even a work truck should have safe headlights. Also, top trim level should also be able to be ordered with a smaller screen, not everyone likes tablets in a truck! Also let the buyer choose to have a digital IC or analog gauges. Oh and last one: BRING BACK THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION (especially RAM with the Cummins!!!)
Factory "upgraded" audio (from what I have found) is usually the factory crap speakers with small tuning and maybe an upgraded amp. Sometimes, you get an added sub, which usually is subpar ( pun intended). Jbl in toyota, alpine in jeep and ram, bose in nissan and gm all kinds suck. The harmon kardon stereo in the ram is petty good. Not much experience with others.
I had a 2011 Ram Dakota crew cab with v6. Got it without tonneau cover. Got a cover and gas milage was 1 or 2 mpg improvements. I had the truck for 3 years.
Hit the nail on the head about bundling! Why do I have to upgrade to 20 inch rims to get the max tow package on a new F150? In order to avoid that, I have to either piecemeal the max tow package components, or select the Sport package and lose that nice storage pocket on the console where the sport shifter will go!
Merry Christmas TFL liking last few TFL Talk, what like see in new trucks is optional upgrades or refurbished upgrades this means companies would be able off load stock shelf upgrades. I believe companies should be offering long term trucks which improve long term investment, safety n especially customers been loyal.
My issue is intentionally gating safety rated functionality behind arbitrary higher trims. Perfect example is adaptive cruise on a F-250. A base lariat with 360 degree cameras has the correct harness to support the CAN network and all the modules (minus cruise control module) to support adaptive cruise. However Ford locks adaptive cruise behind lariat ultimate trim, plus charges an additional $750 (or there about) for adaptive cruise from factory. That's just downright greed. I was able to add adaptive cruise to my 22 XLT by adding 5 parts, for reference (this should illiterate how bad the issue is.) LED projector headlights are the same deal, only an option on lariat ultimate. I was add LED projector headlights to my XLT with just the OEM LED headlights, 2 ballasts and 3 wires. No DTCs and works perfectly. The only reason you can not add LED projector headlights on a lower trim is greed. If the harness a truck is equiped with supports a module and all the supporting modules are present, you should be able to add the functionality a la carte.
I agree with you with stereo systems in cars or any SUV ,trucks good thing that when college for that for electronics and electrical do a lot custom audio systems for businesses and homes. no matter what vehicle We get always upgrade the audio system in it. Back then in 70,80 and 90s they didn’t come with radios in the cars I choose not to get the radio because I knew I would put a good system in it. You save a lot of money back then with no radio and just manual transmission. But I agree if you get a four-wheel-drive truck or all-wheel-drive SUV it should come with all-terrain tires or also with the tow package trailer brake controller. Just like my dad‘s 2015 Tahoe got the seven pin connector but do not have the brake controller
What are some truck power train option that you wish were available in 2023, for small through 1 ton? I would like to see the F150 with the option for the 6.8l and 7.3l V8. Maverick with 2.3l turbo. The Nissan Titan with the 3.8l twin turbo V6, and with the hybrid + turbo V6. Tacoma with a turbo 4 and 6, as well as hybrid options.
I agree with all of your bummers! The beeping is my number 1!!! It's my car, it's my life and if I don't want to put my seatbelt on it's my problem!!! I don't need a seatbelt to back out of my garage or barn!!! Another I have is stop with the sea of black plastic or piano black!!!!! A little color is a good thing!! Dull grey is fine just something besides just black!! And on the wheels too!!!!
There is a reason why all the dealers order the optioned out version. Most normal people go buy a car when they need a new one, not when planning for their current one to brake down a year from now.
As a lifelong mopar fan as well as my dad, his dad and his dad's dad, they are horrible at trim levels. I drive a scat pack challenger and there is countless different types of challengers. Ram is horrible just as you 2 said. It's such a slap in the face to the customers to empty their pockets and try to upscale consistently. I'm ashamed to say but I believe I will be buying a Tacoma next. I'll miss mopar engines, exhaust sounds and the power of their torque but I can't handle Dodge (Mopar) going downhill so fast and only focusing on hellcats and exotic muscle. They turned their back on faithful lifetime mopar followers.
The huge amount of engine options is a purposeful pushback against the home mechanic. With older trucks, you could call your local parts store and they would have your part, now they dont. Figuring it all out is also super hard now. This goes for the massive electronics and multi layer plastics as well. I only have to have a screen because of Government rules, but i dont want one. I dont want modes, or cameras, or turbos, or mix match packages and bundles. If i want upgraded seats, thats the only upgrade i want. Now if you want 3 simple upgrades, you have to buy 3 entire packages with 15 more things you didnt care for.
I got a ‘22 Ram 1500 Laramie and I couldn’t get blindspot/crosspath detection because of the chip shortage. I wish I could get that retrofitted. It’s not that big of a deal until I drive my ‘14 Chevy Impala that has that option.
Fully agree with a lot of this. Tires should match the trim/ capability of the trim. Stereos, if manufacturers are going to do this crazy integrated 20 inch screens to the point where you can't get aftermarket or 30 speakers they need to make top of the line stereo systems standard. Trim levels, DUMB IT DOWN! If you want to make special editions than do it, do make the LTZ Lariat Limited II Longhorne Silver Z71. Just make a special edition like F150 Harley Davidson. Or 1794, kill the long name edition/ packages that add to the name, can keep different packages, but if it completely redesigns the trim make that a separate trim. These are basically auto grievances in general. I think the trailer break is more truck specific and should be a standard feature, it falls into safety. Very good video and list of grievances!
Agreed on the truck sound systems. My 2017 tundra trd pro has been completely trouble free but the sound system is absolutely atrocious. Toyota should be embarrassed putting such a cheap system in an expensive model.
I rotated the tires on my 2021 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax every 5000 miles when I change my oil and the Goodyear Trailrunners only lasted 16000 miles. After buying a $63,000 truck with the Z71 package I was rather disappointed in the factory tire being only good on highway and sucked on dirt roads. Would like to have an option when buying a truck on what tires I get.
The Maverick speakers are ok at best. Nothing horrible but nothing stellar. That said I'm used to driving a Chevy Express 2500 for work with rattly shelves and two speakers so literally anything sounds amazing compared to that. It's all perspective.
Stereo Systems... I personally wouldn't pay extra for a premium factory stereo. Much like Colorado, in Rural Ohio, you make a lot of long trips, and a good stereo is something that we have. Starting with early nineties cars, and continuing to this day, we found that it is really cheap and easy to install a nice set of JBLs, and a new head unit with a built in amp. Then depending on your tastes, it's easy to add amps and subs. With a Chevy LS truck especially, you have to upgrade the alternator. (2003 Silverado Z71, 125,000 miles with new Bilstein suspension all around, all new front end moog parts, 18" 2017 Stock 4wd rims, 33" Falken Wild peak AT3w) Question: with the above described setup I am having trouble keeping it under the rated gvw of 6400 lbs. Granted a lot of the extra weight is due to the extra leafs and above replacements. Do you think the transmission will hold up? I know the 5.3 will be fine. What else should I beef up to safely carry this load? Love your videos! Happy New Year
That whole tire question is SO real! Just purchased a 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X, one of the Best in the segment and a capable trail truck. It came with a set of Hankook Dynapro AT2's. That tire is an on-road casing with an all terrain tread (at least it is severe snow service rated [another rant worthy subject, selling a 4x4 in CO with tires that are illegal on I70 half the year!!]) ,I would not take that tire on a trail on a bet! In less than 200 miles it was sporting 5 Wildpeak A/T3W's in 255/80 17's, a much more appropriate tire for a truck of those capabilities. That was $1500.00 worth of tires to make the truck a real off road rig! WHY? AND yes I put in a REDARC trailer brake controller the next week. Love your work guys!
Great show, awesome topic. I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport and the only thing I like about it is the exterior styling and composite bed. Dislikes: Engine, transmission, drum brakes, fuel economy, interior quality, seating position, infotainment, instrument cluster, backup camera quality, radio. I'm very disappointed with this pickup. I'm waiting couple years to see what new on the market.
My biggest truck pet peeve, is a towing package without towing mirrors. Every truck should have towing mirrors, trucks without towing mirrors should be illegal.
I purchased a 2023 Tundra November 22nd. After signing the paperwork and then picking up the truck the next day, I found out there was only one key. I was told they would send it in 5 weeks. When I demanded that they put it in writing the salesman acted like I was strange for wanting it in writing. Side note, I have the work truck trim and there is no trailer brake controller.
Ram 1500 gripe. The truck knows when any of the doors or hood are open. But if you lower the tailgate, and not turn off the rear parking sensor, it thinks you are backing into a wall and the truck slams on the brakes automatically.
The whole high price thing as it relates to pickup is interesting to me. I feel there is more opinion and potential hatred of rising prices as it relates to pickups more so than any other segment. I'm sure C/SUVs, sedans and minivans have also undergone similar hikes in price point over the years, so just funny to hear the vitriol over pickups specifically.
@R K people dont use other types of vehicles for work? And so it's just the amount of potential profit a company makes, not the actual transaction price? They recently got the Ram, which i think is very similar in price to a base model Dodge Charger AWD. Given the utility of the pickup (if you need that kind of thing), I'd think that is a fair price in today's market which is inflated across the board I will admit.
Because some people actually use their pick-ups for work, so high prices affect there ability to make a living, and also because no class of vehicle makes more money for the manufacturers than pick-ups do (Ford makes more than $10K per pick-up; when they used to make cars, they made a bit more than $1K per car).
I'll tell you what's fun. Getting a new truck with stuff you don't want. Walking out to it, and start taking out what you didn't want and throwing it out in a pile and driving off.
The beeping that drove me nuts was in a rental Toyota carolla that has Lane keep assist that beeped every time I drove through an intersection because it couldn’t see the line anymore. I’ll NEVER buy a car that does that.
Andre, I have a 2021 F150 Powerboost and have been waiitng on a wiper motor recall for na year, although Ford is pumping out F-150s with wiper motor...Guess they got there money so they don't care...Getting ready to go to my Congressman to protect consumers whommhave already paid the cash cows...Great podcast
I like the Deuce and a Half better than the unimog just my opinion TFL should do a comparison of a UNIMOG and a Deuce and a Half AM General military truck
Ya'all already touched on Toyota. The beeping after u shut off the vehicle & remain seated, it just keeps beeping until u open the door. Tailgate lock not connected to door/ cabin locks. Ect. Great podcast 👏
I would love to own RAM 1500 Limited. Sadly, it will never happened. All the monthly bills going up to afford just a townhouse, it will just be a dream. I am accepting this more and more.
37:10 common sense isn't common. People blast the truth because they don't like what they hear or can't imagine any scenario different than their own, while filling up on snake oil and blinker fluid from the people on "their side" telling them exactly what they want to hear
We don't use the word "bummers" any more. Even when car companies are trying to sneak us cheap junk components as part of $100K+ crap, we are calling it "things, which concern us" 😂.
Here's one for you: my CX5 will chime if my turn signal is on to change lanes with someone in my blind spot, as well as show a light in the side mirror. My Ranger shows only the mirror light; why can't it chime too like my CX5?
I like these two guys the most on TFL. Both cheap like me! Trucks are way too expensive and I make 6 figures. I bought a Black 2011 Reg cab Silverado WT 1500 with the V6 RWD for $15,500 CDN new. Bought a Black 2014 Reg Cab Ram 1500 Reg Cab ST with the 5.7 Hemi for $19K new. Where are these trucks now?!!?!!
I have a 2020 F150 Lariat with the B&O system and it's ok. I currently have a XLT Ranger loaner and the base stereo is pretty damn awesome. Seems rather back asswards to me
i do appreciate the mpg loops, but i will say mpg loop testing on such a short loop has problem , you top off and put and extra .1 of a gallon then under a .1 then over .1 . so on the first run 20.1 gallons then you under fill and the next run you have 19.9 gallons and the you fill up and it take 20.1 gallons . if you use 20 gallons the pump error is1 percent on 2 gallons its 10 percent. when you do these short trips show computer and your calculation .also show how much your pumping on the second pump.
All trucks should have the following: 4X4 only Rim size not to exceed 18” All trucks should have all terrain tires Tow package and trailer brake controller installed
Should I wait until the new Tacoma comes out and get the latest and greatest, or should I just get the current gen and get something tried and true, reliable and simple?
Quick comment about the cover video. The 1st loop warmed the dif and trans fluids so loop 2 would have marginally better fuel economy with or without the cover. My 2 cents.
The people that say "I don't notice a difference" re. tonneau cover, are most likely not paying attention to a 1 or 2 mpg difference, with or without the cover. They just drive. Actually most people I know just drive until something breaks.
How about wheel and tire options on high trim models that allow us to decline the low profile 22" tires. If I can afford the trim level, give me 18, 20 and 22 options...Also, when did we need big brother to disallow use of GPS navigation while I'm in motion. I can decide when its appropriate to enter GPS info.
Audio systems: I purchased new a 2005 Nissan Titan LE. This was top of the line in 2005 with the Rockford Fosgate system. This was the worst sounding system when listening to the radio. The only decent sound was from a CD. I’ve ordered the 2023 Super Duty with the BO system. I hope it’s going to be as good as they say.
I Hate how my 21 Trailboss didn't come with a trailer brake controller and you can't add and get one programmed like you could on my 2018 F150 that didn't come with one
@@huemongus3742 you can plug in a after market one but just can't install a factory one and get it programmed with the settings on the dash or cluster like out of the factory
You can still add one, there are options for those situations. You can run your own wires for a 7 pin connector and have them spliced in. Also, Curt has a wireless system. Had a older truck with no hitch, no 7pin harness or brake controller and had all added. It worked great.
And now the way they do the radio it makes so difficult to upgrade to subs and mids and highs because there's basically ecu components in the radio my dad spent 1000 dollars before he could put speakers in just on a head unit
Even if Colorado ZR2 is getting close to Silverado ZR2 pricing, the Colorado is still better for off-road. There is nothing special about the Silverado. They literally threw the Multimatic shocks and a front locker on a Trailboss, and called it a day. GM didn't put nowhere near the amount of time and effort on Silverado ZR2 as they did on the midsize off-road segment.
I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking the Chevy ZR2 was a joke. Where's the 3 manually controlled locker? It just felt like a trail boss upgrade over a larger Colorado ZR2.
I agree they should have done more with the Silverado ZR2, but it does come with front and rear selectable lockers unlike the trail boss. I see the ZR2 as a more modern version of the gen 1 raptor.
Gents, just a suggestion for the average wheeling Joe watching. Drop the what eva 4WD in a bog hole and get stuck, as you do! Then use self recovery gear to get unstuck instead of some sort of “at hand” farm recovery machine Get dirty and get real.
mine is crew cabs with 4-5' boxes not all of us want a back seat. I don't want to drop a tail gate use. a bed extender to haul something and need more smaller super club /king cab with 6.5' boxes no 20"-22" rims and to get a good off road package I have to go to the top of the line trim
Here's one of my biggest "Automotive Grievances" and looking at Ford Trucks is the absence of a SuperCab Truck w/6.5 Bed. Ford has all but discontinued this. You cannot buy a SuperCab in anything other than the "base" XL or XLT truck, NO Lariat (Yes F250 but talking F150) No upper trim models, no specialty models such as Tremor, Rattler, or even in Raptor or Raptor R. Disappointing to say the least...
It’s 6 in the morning everyone is still asleep. I have a coffee and fire going while watching TFL. Pretty great way to start Christmas Eve.
Man the best way to start the day
Absolutely!
I agree the truck mfg. should include the brake controller with a tow package. Great video and best of the holidays to you TFL!
Even the little Maverick AWD truck I show in videos on my channel has a brake controller included with my 4k tow package.
In my experience, every truck I’ve had (GM products) included the trailer brake controller with the towing package. I’d give them a difficult time if it wasn’t included.
My biggest grievance is I cant afford any of them! This is BS, lol..
@Tyrfing🗡 You can still get a sub $25k Maverick truck. My upgraded Mav hybrid that I show in videos on my channel only cost $27,050. Order a 2024MY this fall from a dealer that charges msrp.
Trucks went from being affordable Everyman kind of truck to big luxury vehicles within my lifetime
My Maverick is a low priced truck. The hybrid I show in videos on my channel with upgrades only cost 27k.
I think you hit nail on head with this comment
The more luxurious the truck the larger the profit margin, so it’s actually the opposite. The people buying the luxury trims are paying for the people wanting a stripped down model.
Amen!
I enjoy both of your thoughts and opinions. No smugness or entitlement. Others within this group have a premadonna complex. You two speak to me ❤️
68 years old here and have owned all of the big three.
Nathan’s Ford chime noise is pretty on point!😂

@Ronald King they could both go to the same tank.

You guys are great 👍🏻
Tires, I agree, I have a 07 Toyota Tundra, 2WD, I don’t abuse it at all, but only got 28,000 miles on original tires, hasn’t gotten much better over the years. I’m on my 5 set of tires at 137,000 miles
Totally agree on the tires great point! Also not liking my b&o on my broncosport badlands, it's not terrible but not Great
Rotating and balancing tires between 5,000 and 7,500 miles helps extend the life of tires. Maintain proper inflation is critical.
Cooper Discoverer 285 R 16 tires have lasted about 50k each set on my 2004 GMC 2500 HD Duramax. About 10k towing in 200k driving. First set of Michelins went about 45k.
I am sick of them forcing larger wheels for the higher packages that impact capability!
The towing marketing wars are to the point were it is creating a degree of unsafe situations on the road. I have have multiple conversations with f150 drivers that are absolutely convinced thy can tow 13-15k and Looking to purchase a 5th wheel camper.
Didn’t mean to pick on Ford. Love the product but man that brand seems to attract a lot of ding dongs that would be better suited with a minivan. 😂
Tremendously informative edition.
TRUCK DRIVERS Deep Dive EDITION ++!
LED headlights should be the standard on all new trucks and cars sold, they are safer and last longer then Halaogen bulbs. Plus they look better at night.
My Ram TRD Denali King Ranch Z71 was the best truck I'll ever own.
I always said if you took the good of all and built a truck from that you’ll have a good truck.
😂
The seat belt alarm in my Tacoma drives me nuts. I have car seats in the back so I usually end up stacking groceries on the passenger seat then the truck thinks there's someone sitting there without their belt on so it has to yell at me all the way home. I have to remember to buckle the seatbelt before loading groceries.
for good all terains, I highly recommend falken wildpeak AT3s. I do moderate offroading, a lot of street, and occasional heavy load in the bed. I'm over 30k miles into the expected 55k life and still plenty of tread. Rotate regularly with oil changes.
this is on a 2017 ram 1500 slt, tired are 33x12.50r20 and I have them on some 20x10s with a negative 25 offset

My biggest peeves with pickup trucks are:
@79random possible, or a combination of the rim and tire’s rating.
I might be mistaken but I believe the rim choice is because the rims themselves have a higher weight rating than others
I was able to add adaptive cruise to my 22 XLT by adding 5 parts, for reference (this should illiterate how bad the issue is.)
LED projector headlights are the same deal, only an option on lariat ultimate.

☝️☝️🆙Thanks for watching, you have been selected among my lucky winners message, me to claim your prize.🎉🎁

Completely disagree on the engine choices. Most truck people I talk to want options, not just a blanket take-what-you-get drivetrain myself included.

The tires thing is probably also a function of the damn EPA and MPG requirements.

(2003 Silverado Z71, 125,000 miles with new Bilstein suspension all around, all new front end moog parts, 18" 2017 Stock 4wd rims, 33" Falken Wild peak AT3w)
Question: with the above described setup I am having trouble keeping it under the rated gvw of 6400 lbs.
In 2018 i priced out a decent 4 wheel drive xlt with a diesel motor, $48,000. That looks like a bargain now…
Great show, awesome topic.
The add to all the confusion is also dealer up grades, no one knows if it's worth the extra money
My biggest truck pet peeve, is a towing package without towing mirrors. Every truck should have towing mirrors, trucks without towing mirrors should be illegal.
@ALMX5DP when it comes to towing, yes I am. I'd rather they mandate towing mirrors over backup camera's.
You’re advocating for more government intervention? I prefer to have option and choice depending on what I’m purchasing my vehicle for.
Toyota as a work truck??? LOL.
☝️☝️🆙Thanks for watching, you have been selected among my lucky winners message, me to claim your prize.🎉🎁
Checking in Saturday morning w a cup of coffee. Great video. Good points, especially about the trailer control option and interior quality.

Absolutely, my BO speaker system in my 22 ford f150 tremor is VERY LACK LUSTER
The factory tires on my 2018 ram 2500 had significant wear at only 5000 miles
Ya'all already touched on Toyota. The beeping after u shut off the vehicle & remain seated, it just keeps beeping until u open the door.
Tailgate lock not connected to door/ cabin locks.
Ect.
Great podcast 👏
I would love to own RAM 1500 Limited. Sadly, it will never happened. All the monthly bills going up to afford just a townhouse, it will just be a dream. I am accepting this more and more.
Stereo systems are a hit or miss. With the amount that these trucks equate, they should have nicer sound systems.
He is right on what he said about toyota sound system. Im thinking they just add speakers to the upgraded sound system but no amps.
I miss my “door is ajar” Nissan car. When I was in college I always wished I could get her phone number!
Here's one for you: my CX5 will chime if my turn signal is on to change lanes with someone in my blind spot, as well as show a light in the side mirror. My Ranger shows only the mirror light; why can't it chime too like my CX5?
It frustrating To pay 95k for a 3500 with trash tires. That can’t be defined from a manufacturer standpoint.
Regarding truck stereo’s - I have a Ford Ranger in the Lariat trim that has a B&O stereo. To my ears the stereo is excellent.

All trucks should have the following:
4X4 only
Rim size not to exceed 18”
All trucks should have all terrain tires
Tow package and trailer brake controller installed
My 2019 Tundra SR5 with the TRD OFF Road package came with Michelins😃.
Should I wait until the new Tacoma comes out and get the latest and greatest, or should I just get the current gen and get something tried and true, reliable and simple?

You should rotate tires before a major winter storm? That's expert advice!
Lol you should rotate your tires every 5000 miles
Glad i got my Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi etorque April 2021 before covid and manufacturers started having quality issues.
Quick comment about the cover video. The 1st loop warmed the dif and trans fluids so loop 2 would have marginally better fuel economy with or without the cover. My 2 cents.
We drove the truck about five miles to the gas station, from the studio.
How far was the gas station from their office? You sure the fluids werent already warm when they arrived there?
Great podcast fellas. Merry Christmas
The people that say "I don't notice a difference" re. tonneau cover, are most likely not paying attention to a 1 or 2 mpg difference, with or without the cover.
They just drive. Actually most people I know just drive until something breaks.
Just put your seatbelt on. Just put it on and I won’t beep. Put it on before you start up. Make wearing the seatbelt part of your routine
Lariat is still the middle ground, you just get a lot for it. Look at the price of a Lariat vs a Platinum or Limited Super duty....
I hate excessive beeping too, fam.

@BPF 1893 I thought it just had a front locker and the standard rear auto locker. I must be mistaken then.
@Necrosis3 it has 3 controllable lockers, what are you talking about?
I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking the Chevy ZR2 was a joke. Where's the 3 manually controlled locker?
It just felt like a trail boss upgrade over a larger Colorado ZR2.
I agree they should have done more with the Silverado ZR2, but it does come with front and rear selectable lockers unlike the trail boss. I see the ZR2 as a more modern version of the gen 1 raptor.
Gents, just a suggestion for the average wheeling Joe watching.
Drop the what eva 4WD in a bog hole and get stuck, as you do!
Then use self recovery gear to get unstuck instead of some sort of “at hand” farm recovery machine
Get dirty and get real.
mine is crew cabs with 4-5' boxes not all of us want a back seat.
