I find it ironic that the most nostalgic route to the west coast is destined to be the escape route as well.

This is arguably the most detailed experience of Route 66 that I’ve found on KZclip! I live in Northern California and am trying to convince my wife to take a two-week vacation, rent a car, then make that trip from Santa Monica to Chicago. The food stops look amazing; I can tell your dad didn’t care for Bagdad Cafe but I definitely bookmarked Butcher BBQ in Oklahoma. And those museums; I want to check ‘em all out! But overall, amazing video!!

      Seems as though
there's a reoccurring theme at all the stops: not open on Monday Tuesday's, closed for renovations, not open because of tornado damage, flood damage, fire damage, closed at five o clock, owner out sick, on vacation , had to take dog to vet, on and on.

yes make that road trip tell your wife if she wont cooperate she will be discarded

    • Aaron Digby

There seems to be a reoccurring theme: half of the stops got some kind of glitch: closed due to flooding, a tornado came through so it's in repair, the owner doesn't open on Monday and Tuesday, it's closed on holidays, happen to be a power outage, the owners wife just had surgery and he's at the hospital, they had some of the most interesting and odd awesome statues, so much nostalgia and all the history and tales, the amazing varieties of food, eateries just amazing, the ghost towns that the interstate put out of business.

You two are an absolute gem for folks that lack the means or ability to travel and see the beautiful country. I spent many, many days and nights traversing the scenic routes and historic by-ways of the mid Atlantic states, including Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and South Carolina with my grandparents in the eighties and nineties, as a youth. What great times we had, exploring, enjoying each other's company, rarely with any preconceived final destination declared or expected. We saw cities and suburbs...mountains and valleys....from the tiniest farms to bustling cities! I learned a great deal about wealth and poverty ( My grandparents were from rural West Virginia, but had settled in the suburbs of Washington DC. My grandfather becoming a DC firefighter and my grandmother a banker, defeating their own struggles)...about struggles, both financial and cultural. That time spent with my loved ones is time I'll cherish forever. Bravo gentlemen, what wholesome, all-American fun!!

Oh my! Came across you channel today, I am a woman of 72 in Australia and probably will never experience this wonderful trip in my lifetime, so thank you so much for this wonderful journey, the food, the different architecture and history. So well presented and so very interesting.. I felt like I was on the journey with you.. brilliant. Thank you so very much for the history and all the great stops and museums. I am so very grateful for you taking the time. My granddaughter did a semester at Oklahoma University and after that she did some travelling around to Washington DC and New York and she absolutely loved it, before returning back home to Australia. Many thanks for this lovely adventure via Route 66. God Bless.

In 1960-1962 our family made the trip over Route 66 several times when my parents were moving from Chicago to Los Angeles. Each trip was epic for me and my brother. We got to see it in its heyday. I saw several motels we stayed in that are in ruins now. I am so glad I was able to experience as a child before they dismantled it. I hope it comes back in all its glory someday.

This has got to be one of the most informative videos on Route 66. Not only do you show the various sites but you tell the audience what to look for, interesting historical facts and just basic information for folks who may want to visit in the future. This is extremely valuable!

@EarthSurferUSA My friends decided to drive to St. Louis for their honeymoon. The bride sat in the car while the groom got out of the car to gas the vehicle. The voice of that attendant came over the intercom telling him to "...get back in the vehicle, now !.". The couple watched in horror as two gangs clashed all around them. They were able to drive away. They saw the Botanical Gardens and headed home early !.

Covid (and Big Brother) has kept my family of four stuck here in Japan for almost 3 years now. It's been great to travel around the States with you and "Pops"! Thanks for taking us along on your journeys! We watched the national park trip in Utah first-- very beautiful and enjoyable! We appreciate your detailed and relevant dialogue, and your Pop's witty feedback (with his Christopher Lee--like voice). We've subscribed and are looking forward to watching more of your videos!

By far, the best Route 66 video guide on KZclip. Thank you Josh and "Pops" for compiling this information and footage. In the description you wrote that you wanted to encourage others to make this trip. Mission accomplished. I just finished Route 66 with my wife in May. It has been our favorite trip so far. We tried to stop at most of the places shown in your video. One place we loved that was not in your video is the Route 66 Museum in Ash Fork, AZ. It was one of the best stops on the entire route because unlike other museums where you cannot touch anything, this one is completely interactive. The kind and helpful staff encourage visitors to touch everything to get the full experience of their museum.
Also one of the best parts of doing Route 66 is meeting up with other travelers on the Route. It's awesome how you keep running into the same people day after day all because we watched your video and stop at the same places.

A big thank you to both of you for this video. I always wanted to do an American road trip and Route 66 was top of my list. Back in September/October I finally did it. Your video was a huge influence in me actually going through with it. It was also a massive help when I was there. I stayed in a lot of the hotels that you recommended and they were all great. I've been watching some of your other videos and Utah might be my next destination. All great viewing. Massive thanks from Wales. :)

@Karen Wills Hi Karen. Thanks for your reply. Good to see you have Welsh ancestry. And I certainly hope you get to achieve that particular bucket list item some day. Let me know if you plan to go ahead and do it. If I can help in any way, I will certainly try my best. My next US road trip will be in April. Hoping to get California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona covered. Again, Through My Lens has been a massive influence in choosing those states. I certainly plan to do the east part of Route 66 again some day. That's where tiredness started to set in and I missed some of the things I'd planned. And I was unlucky to get to Chicago on the day of the Chicago Marathon! So that city is yet to be explored by me!

Mark my family has lived on Route 66, 100 miles south of Chicago since 1880 - actually before it was designated 66 it was route 4. It made the trip to Chicago so fast, we went a couple times a month.Being ‘from’ Route 66 has always been a great sourse of pride for my family. We made many trips out West, also, zig zagging to see more sights, but catching 66 for several stretches. The American West is a must see. We would love to see you here! Your comment caught my attention, also, because my family (Parry & Dunn) came from Wales in the early 1800s. Your country is on top of my bucket list! I hope to see you there someday. Please come visit!

I was raised in Needles, CA and seeing this is just incredible. For as short of a stop as it was, I could remember being in marching band and marching down broadway, past the old Burger place. I remembered going to el garces just to hang out in the middle of the night, or crossing the train tracks to get to and from wherever I was going. That town is so small you can walk the whole thing in a couple of hours if you know where the trails are. Wouldn't move back, but man it was a crazy time.

Also don't even know if you realized when you drove near the bridge to get into AZ< you also looked at a local spot, the rope swing. Some brave souls repelled down (and a couple others climbed up later on when needed to be replaced) and put a rope around the bridge truss. You can grab the rope, take it to the shore and swing pretty far out into the water. It's my understanding on the other side of that in Topock AZ they also built a new resort/fuel station. It used to just be a restaurant, and a boat fill up, now it's a full on hotel with boat docks and everything.

Great job with the video capturing so many of the highlights and giving great ideas for stops. You asked the question if “Sids “ in El Reno was worth the stop? ABSOLUTELY! Great video! As a kid in the 60's & 70's, every summer my family would drive Rt. 66 from the L.A. area to Chicago, so I was able to experience the Mother Road before its decline. In 2015, after purchasing a tool truck in Norman, OK, I opted to drive home in San Diego via Rt. 66. It was sad to see much of the Route abandoned, much of nothing more than concrete slabs where motels and gas stations once stood. 3 Years later I left California and moved to Kingman, AZ, living just 2 blocks from Rt. 66 and right off the Old Trails Road. If you ever get the chance, while in Kingman take 4th street (where the train station is) and cross the tracks. that street will turn into Old Trails Rd. which as you know was the precursor to Rt.66. It's only about 3 miles long and dead ends, but takes you thru Railroad Canyon where Walt Disney got the idea for the train ride at Disneyland. Mr. D's cafe... you were wondering about it, Mr. D's is the Mr. Dunton who owns the classic car dealership next door. A typical tourist trap, they do have good food and they make their own Root Beer which is amazing.

This brings back so many memories from traveling Rt 66 as a child. We drove all the way from NH to California twice in the early 70's. Route 66 was something special. The Jack Rabbit signs stand out as something very intriguing as a child. I kept wondering, when are we going to get there!!! My mom still has a sombrero we purchased at the store. How I wish I could go back in time and ride that route all over again, sitting between my parents. They are truly some of the best memories I have with my family.

Just finished watching this, it’s awesome! If you are looking to see and travel the original route and see some of the “ghost town” areas of Route 66, you will not be disappointed. I have many ancestors who travelled on Route 66, so the “pioneer” aspect is important to me. Thank you for your coverage of Barstow, CA, where I lived from 1955 to 1967. My dad worked for Santa Fe RR for 30 years. Our family drove many times from Barstow to Oklahoma on Route 66.

Thank you for this opportunity to ride along with you and your dad on this trip.
My husband and I were married in Los Angeles in 1968 and he was in the army and stationed in Virginia. We drove at night on Route 66 and I fell in love with the billboards for the souvenir shops and museums, but especially the neon sign for the Blue Swallow motel. The most beautiful sight was to see the sunrise over the Painted Desert. THAT was awesome!
In 1993 we decided to make a road trip to Washington DC and take our sweet time stopping at all the sights on Route 66 on the way back. So from Missouri back to LA we stopped at every little museum and shop that caught our eyes. We stayed in Williams, Arizona and took the old train to the Grand Canyon. We got to meet so many great people.
In Seligman we met a group of men who had come from Germany and had rented motorcycles to make the trip from Chicago to Santa Monica. They had dressed just like Marlon Brando in the Wild Ones!
Again, thanks for the ride and the memories.

*THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE YOU WILL EVER READ:*
ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH FEAR, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, LONELINESS, HATE, RESENTMENT, ANGER, LUST, SEXUAL PERVERSION OR ADDICTIONS?
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS IN A BOTTLE, IN DRUGS, IN ENTERTAINMENT, IN A CAREER, IN MONEY & MATERIAL POSSESSIONS, IN SPORTS, IN STRANGE MEN/WOMEN, IN ADDICTIONS, IN NEW AGE PRACTICES, ETC?
DO THEY EVER FILL YOU OR DO YOU JUST MOVE ON TO THE NEXT FIX OR THE NEXT THING?
THERE IS A CREATION SO WE KNOW THERE IS A CREATOR. YOU DIDN'T COME FROM NOTHING & YOU WEREN'T CREATED FOR NO REASON. YOUR LIFE HAS A PURPOSE AND YOU ARE LOVED & VALUED BY GOD! YOU WERE CREATED TO LOVE & SERVE GOD AND TO LOVE & SERVE OTHERS!
YOU SEE WHEN GOD CREATED US HE LEFT A HOLE IN US THAT CAN ONLY BE FILLED BY HIM! THIS IS WHY SO MANY THAT HAVE ACHIEVED GREAT SUCCESS IN THE WORLD ARE STILL MISERABLE & DEPRESSED. IT JUST LEAVES THEM LONGING FOR MORE & WONDERING WHY THAT DIDN'T FIX THE BROKENNESS IN THEM. WHY DO SO MANY RICH PEOPLE & CELEBRITIES DRINK/DRUG THEMSELVES TO DEATH?
GOD DESIRES FOR YOU TO KNOW HIM AS A FATHER, A BEST FRIEND, A PROTECTOR, A PROVIDER, A REFUGE. HE WANTS TO BE MASTER & LORD OF YOUR LIFE, HE WANTS TO BE YOUR SAVIOR. HE WANTS A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU, LIKE A FATHER & SON/DAUGHTER! HE LOVES YOU MORE THAN ANY PERSON EVER CAN BECAUSE HE IS LIMITLESS! HE'S ALL KNOWING, ALL POWERFUL, ALL SEEING!
JESUS KNOCKS ON YOUR HEART AND LONGS FOR YOU TO ANSWER! HE DOESN'T WANT TO SEE ANYONE PERISH INTO HELL. GOD LOVES YOU SO HE GIVES YOU FREE WILL AND A CHOICE TO ACCEPT HIM OR REJECT HIM. TO LOVE HIM OR TO LOVE SIN/THIS WORLD. CALL UPON JESUS & ASK HIM TO FORGIVE YOUR SINS! SURRENDER YOUR WILL & YOUR LIFE TO HIM AND HE WILL GIVE YOU ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN! PICTURE YOUR BEST DAY ON EARTH TIMES A BILLION FOR ETERNITY, THAT'S HEAVEN! NOW PICTURE YOUR WORST DAY ON EARTH TIMES A BILLION FOR ETERNITY, THAT'S HELL! TOTAL SEPARATION FROM GOD & HIS BLESSINGS (LOVE, PEACE, JOY, HOPE, FRIENDS, FAMILY, REST, ETC). IN HELL YOU WILL BE ALONE, YOU WILL BE HOPELESS, YOU WILL BE IN DESPAIR & AGONY FOREVER!
GOD'S STANDARD FOR HEAVEN IS PERFECTION AND ONLY JESUS (THE SON OF GOD, GOD IN THE FLESH) LIVED THAT PERFECT LIFE AND LAID DOWN HIS LIFE AS AN OFFERING FOR ALL PEOPLE'S SINS! YOU CAN CHOOSE TO REJECT JESUS' GIFT & PAY FOR YOUR OWN SIN WITH DEATH (HELL) BUT THAT SEEMS PRETTY FOOLISH! GOD SEES & HEARS EVERYTHING YOU HAVE SAID & DONE. YOU WONT WIN AN ARGUMENT ON JUDGEMENT DAY & YOU CANT DEFEND ANY OF YOUR SINS. WE'RE ALL GUILTY WITHOUT ACCEPTING JESUS' SACRIFICE FOR OUR SINS!
THESE ARE END TIMES: THE VACCINES & BOOSTERS ARE POISON & MANY WILL DIE FROM THEM! THE MARK OF THE BEAST IS NEXT AND YOU WONT BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT IT! EVENTUALLY YOU WILL BE FORCED TO GET IT OR BE KILLED! EVERYTHING GOING ON IS TALKED ABOUT IN THE BIBLE BUT IT WILL GET FAR WORSE THAN ANY TIME IN HISTORY. YOUR ONLY HOPE IS CHRIST! HE IS THE ONLY WAY TO ESCAPE OR ENDURE WHAT'S TO COME!
MUHAMMAD DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, BUDDHA DIDN'T DIE FOR YOUR SINS, NO PASTOR/PRIEST/MARY OR SAINT DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO IDOLS OR FALSE GODS DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO ACTOR OR CELEBRITY DIED FOR YOUR SINS, NO ATHLETE OR POLITICIAN DIED FOR YOUR SINS!
JESUS CHRIST ALONE DIED FOR YOUR SINS & WAS RESURRECTED FROM THE GRAVE! HE IS ALIVE & COMING BACK SOON WITH JUDGEMENT! PREPARE YOURSELVES! DON'T WAIT TO CRY OUT TO HIM!
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."-John 14:6
"But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven."-Matthew 10:33

Yes it looks Stunning, beautiful part of the world to live, and I guess close enough to be near those cities like LA should you want to go, and places like Palm Springs.
Im not really a city type of person, I like to go to them now and again but smaller towns are more my cup of tea.
And the people seem friendlier in smaller places, then again the Americans treat me like I’m Jon Bon Jovi wherever I seem to go.

I will do .....I think I’ve heard of it, when I was visiting friends in Wyoming in 2017 I had a online friend in California who lived near a large lake but that was in the north, not fare from the Oregon border.

I love that y'all are honest about the disappointments on the trip too, mostly lots of closings lol. We've kinda developed a culture here nowadays that is just fine with businesses being closed in the middle of the day in the middle of the week, or roads being closed with no timeframes for reopening, etc.

Welcome to the anti-free market decline of the USA. We gave our wealth making opportunity, or free enterprise that we built as free people, to communist china starting 44 years ago,-and this is the result, and actually called "progress" in our schools.
Ya know, if you and I thought about doing business with each other, and while trying to make a deal one of us was not going to make money doing it, it would be "no deal".
What we are living through is our elected, giving our liberty and free enterprise that people with individual liberty created in the first place, to communism,--and they are not compatible because communism does not respect individual liberty at all. As the results prove, no economist was right.

You did an amazing job with the video. I live in central North Carolina, and took a road trip many years ago to CA. Saw a few of those things along the way, but missed so many. I'm nearly 46 now, and will probably never go back out there again. Those were two well-spent hours watching this video. My dad passed away when I was 20 years old at age 48. So nice to see your dad along for the ride with you. Those are times and miles that you'll never regret sharing with him. I look forward to checking out your other videos. God bless you and your family.

Fantastic journey of Route 66, filmed just for us to view. Your narration is great, very engaging, and you make it fun! Your Dad and you looked like you had a trip of a lifetime. We are in Australia, & in Covid-19 lockdown again, and although I have travelled through USA, I haven't done Route 66. So I feel like I was doing the trip with you. Thanks so much for your efforts. It was amazing.

I told my son that we MUST do this road trip!! THANK YOU for inspiring me and giving me great ideas on where to stop and stay. When we were in Arizona last year (August 2021) we visited Winslow and the Petrified Forest and saw the Route 66 memorabilia. After viewing your video, it has convinced me to go do the Route 66 road trip too. Yay!! Thanks for sharing with us your great and amazing adventure. A great video compilation of Route 66, I give this an A, great job! Really good photography, narration, information, background music and taking the extra effort to see some of the sites that were off of the Route 66. It was nice to see a father and son travel this historic route together. I’m sorry to be devil’s advocate, there were a couple of items that were not correct. I lived in South Pasadena in the 60s and 70s and Pasadena in the 70s and 80s as well. The Rialto Theatre is in South Pasadena, CA not Pasadena and what you referred to as the Arroyo Seco Freeway (when I lived there it was called the Pasadena Freeway 11) it was built in 1933 (check the metal plate at the base of the bridge), not 1940 and it was the first freeway built in the U.S.; check the on ramps and off ramps, they are the original ones and were designed for the vehicles of 1933. The Colorado Boulevard bridge in Pasadena we used to call it “Suicide Bridge” this was just a nick name. Besides these items, this is an excellent and educational video, I did not know this history of all of these states on Route 66. By the way, a side note, some of the older gas pumps that said “ethyl” on them this word means tetra ethyl lead which was an anti-knock compound that the oil refineries added to their gasoline. Thank you for posting this great journey! Mike Zimmerman

A fantastic road trip: Santa Monica Pier; Burma Shave; Service Stations; Petrified Forest; Will Rogers; Bass Shop; Blue Whale, etc. What makes this video perfect: Half of what you were looking for was closed, renovated, not open yet, unsafe, bad weather, no vacancy, etc. . . . which means there were so many surprise, unplanned stops, later / earlier pick up videos. It's all about "Getting Your Kicks on Route 66!"

This is so GREAT! And what a wonderful thing to be able to do this with your dad. My dad passed in 2007, but we did a cross-country sprint from Upland, CA to Barre, VT (so mostly route 40) and I loved it! We were racing bad weather and had to get me there to start a job, so we didn't get to do ALL of the fun things you two did...but cherish this time with your dad. It may never come again and I WISH I could have done this with mine.

I just wanted to let you know how much we enjoy all your videos. We just returned from a quick 4 day trip on Route 66 from Barstow to the Painted Desert and back again. We took many of your suggestions of things to see and do and it made for a wonderful trip. Of course, the highlight was Standin' on the corner (a bucket list item for me). We stayed at La Posada and really loved it. The hotel was beautiful and very quiet, other than the sound of trains going by. We had a wonderful dinner in the Turquoise Room.
