@VoidyVoid11 it's a summary that skips too much, imagine if I make a summary of Mongolia empire and I skip a lot of stuff they did before they were united, during the unification, after the unification, the starting of expansion, all deals that went bad and just paint them as necessary force to qualm situations in horrible provinces and big countries without explaining the situation. A summary is suppose to give you clarity, skipping formalities and such, not skipping facts that made it important.

13:14 You mention the April 2008 Bucharest Summit, where it was stated that Georgia and Ukraine will become future members of NATO; and Russia's negative reaction. You omit to mention the 2008 Georgian War that followed that summer - quite an important event and a foreshadowing of what might happen to Ukraine. Russia could not countenance Crimea (especially) becoming part of NATO.

Also, since the video became political it could've went back a few years before '47 to tell the story, just to point out for example that the USSR promised free and fair elections in all countries east of Germany, but in reality what happened was the destruction of their constitutions, imposition of communist one-party systems, mass deportation(in some cases execution) of people who did not agree with all of this and so on. Which is what led to the largest guerilla war in European history.

    • The D To The V
The D To The V Ай бұрын

It really only goes into 'politics' to mention NATO's reasonings for interventions and then at the very end, quoting Putin's statements. Almost hilariously states that 'at the end of 2021 Putin tries to negotiate an end to NATO's expansion to the east... without a response'. Wanna know what that 'negotiation' was? It was literally Putin's demand that Baltic states, Poland, Bulgaria, etc. would be effectively kicked out of NATO without their own will.

    • The D To The V
The D To The V Ай бұрын

It didn't mention anything outside of NATO's actions. You're being awfully selective in your comment. It doesn't mention a lot of things, including Russia's actions that pushed such countries like Poland, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Hungary, etc. to join NATO. It didn't menton the USSR's violent crackdowns on Czechoslovakia, Hungary, the border attacks on the Baltics, the largest guerilla war in European history and so on.

I love your videos because they go very thoroughly over well known events, and therefore uncover tons of details I've never heard about, for instance I have never heard of the 1948 Czech coup, Nato sending aid to Pakistan and Darfur, article 5 being triggered after 911, and Greece leaving the command structure of NATO.

A bit disappointed that there was no mention of the Yugoslav-Soviet split in 1948, when Yugoslavia proclaimed itself to be non-aligned and adopted a different, more left-wing style of socialism in the coming years. It was quite a tense period, but after Stalin's death, Khruschev reconciled with Yugoslavia, which was now in okay terms with both the West and the East.

Excellent video, informative and objective. One small note: the Italian flag at min. 04:01 is wrong: it is the one of the Kingdom of Italy (note the Savoy family emblem within the flag’s white stripe). That flag was replaced by the current one (with three clean stripes of color) in 1946, when after a referendum Italy became a republic. So, in 1951 Italys flag was definitely without the former royal family emblem.

Fascinating arguments come up here from various country viewpoints over the relevance & necessity of NATO in the current world geopolitical scenario. Taken as a continental whole, the North American - West European original defense pact NATO is disliked in Asia, Africa & South America , reminding these populous nationals of past bullying European colonial powers military & economic deprivation modes , starting from the medieval times. The outrage felt against NATO today over 3 most populated continents is because of it being seen as a body aiding economic inequality established hitherto of ganged up essentially old European colonial powers under new garb of such alliances to spread out their own differences so as to keep their conflicts at simmering point towards brink of a 3rd World War. These impressions are borne out by the populated nations like China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, South Africa & more such showing firm reluctance these days to get involved in military interventions like the one in Ukraine.❤

  • Anderson Klein
Anderson Klein 8 ай бұрын +245

It'd have been relevant to mention the Georgian War resulting in Georgia not being accepted, as well as the fact that Russia's demands to Ukraine far exceeded just not joining NATO, and the fact that the West did respond to Russia's request by saying that while Russia couldn't dictate which countries could join a defensive alliance, there were no plans to accept Ukraine at this time.

the iron curtain did not include yugoslawia. The later was actually slightly hostile to the soviet block and had pretty open borders towards western countries and solid economic ties.
Albania also also wasn't part of the soviet block though they definitly had their own little iron curtain. They had a more North Korean system and have been extremely isolated from all their neighbours. Just to give you an example, after the fall of comunism in albania I met several albanians asking me if humans really landed on the moon or where utterly baffeled when they saw a television set. Not to mention the old woman I once drove to an hospital which was so scared from driving in a car that we had to halt and help her calm down.

Austria was occupied by the USSR, FR, UK and US from 1945 until 1955 and separated into four sectors. The situation within Vienna, the capital, was similar to Berlin, with the city also being separated into four sectors, but without a big wall, like in Berlin. With the Austrian State Treaty, signed May 15th 1955 in Vienna, Austria was re-established as a sovereign state, with the USSR only signing it by making Austria promise to stay independent and not join NATO (which Austria assured by putting it in its constitution). That's why Austria to this day is not part of NATO, and together with Switzerland forms somewhat of a "neutral island" in Central Europe (militarily neutral; Austria joined the EU in '95 and the Eurozone in '02). That also may explain why many international institutions like the OSCE, OPEC, UN,... have their HQs in Vienna and why the JCPOA ("Iran-Deal") was signed there.
Hope that helps! I grew up in Vienna and am now living in Berlin ;)

Some errors here as the Taliban weren't Western targets. The West left after defeating ISIS and Al Qaeda so those mission objectives were achieved. Stability fell due to Afghanistan's own incompetence at warding off minor extremists.

In the time from 1945 - 1955, you have added the Soviet controlled part of Austria also to the Warsaw Pact, that isn't true and the iron curtain was never built through Austria, it was build at the borders with Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Yugoslavia. Also Vienna, Austria's capital city was also splitted up by the four allied powers, only Vienna's first district was governed by all four allied powers (There is a picture of four allied soldiers, for each power one in a Jeep, which is called "Die Vier im Jeep", which patrolled the First District) also Lower Austria, Burgenland and parts of Upper Austria weren't part of the Warsaw Pact
Austria was controlled by the allies equally and the first election was held in 1945, were Karl Renner was elected head of state
Only after Stalin's death in 1953, Austria had chance of becoming sovereign, which it did in 1955

Fun Fact, literally the only reason why United Nations was able to send any sort of aid to South Korea at the time was because USSR was boycotting them. If the USSR was there, they would've vetoed and the UN wouldn't have be able to send anything to help South Korea

I always wondered why there was so much rivalry between the modern-allied American and French troops. While they had a common goal, they often seemed to have a sort of rivalry that seemed a little more arrogant on both ends. A lot of people argued that Charles de Gaulle was looking out for his own people, but I could also see why American leaders might have believed that Charles disliked American leaders. Apparently both the US and Brits had a tough time with France. I only did some quick research, so I'm sure my information isn't as polished as a history book. Anyone feel free to correct me.

France and the US both wanting to be the leader is what it boils down to. The US is the de facto number one of NATO, but composes 2/3 of NATO military spending. For the other members of NATO, it’s a small price to pay for security.

Sweden and Finland, it's worth noting, are together with Switzerland known to have been among the "most neutral" countries in the world. And Sweden has remained neutral for longer than Switzerland. Only the Russian agression with the invasion of Ukraine shifted (and very strongly) the mind of the populations from neutrality towards NATO membership.

@Фёдор Дуболомов No, _NOT "participation in... NATO wars."_ Those are Swedish instructors to the Iraqi military, in a *United Nations mission,* that the UN asked NATO to lead.
Any largescale operation needs competent leadership with experince, NATO had that so the UN asked NATO to lead it. But it _IS_ a UN operation, not a NATO or US operation, that the Swedish instructors participate in. Besides, the Swedish had nothing to do with any "war", only with instructing the countrys national military. They are school teachers, not warriors.

The Swedish Armed Forces suspended the work of the mission of military instructors in Iraq after the death of Iranian General Qasim Suleimani, the Expressen newspaper reports, citing a representative of the Armed Forces."

      @lordexvar Not correct.
Finland was _NOT_ "an ally of the Nazis". They were "brothers in arms", fighting the same enemy, not allies- German troops could do certain limited operations from Finnish territory. And Finlands field marshall Mannerheim personally insulted the Nazis leader (yes Hitler) in his open face - with no counter reaction.
Sweden in WWII was _NOT_ "closely tied" with Germany. They sold iron (a lot) to Germany. And ball bearings to both the UK and Germany (so both sides). Sweden had to allow the transit of German troops to Norway (when they had control, not for invading), an aggreement they really couldn't avoid without a high risk of occupation, for 3 years. In1943 they stopped for transits.
