If anyone is curious, the hand signals the SU-57 pilot was using were actual signals. He first said, "follow me" then he said "330". "Follow me, heading 330" asking Mav to follow him north back to the base he came from, away from the ship which was south of their position. So, they really did think he was a friendly before Maverick started shooting.

@George Young Pretty much. There really isn't much chance of any of these jets being anywhere near each other. No reason at all to ever risk such a thing. They do battle from distances the naked eye can't even see.

The level of movement and action in the air is intense, but what's even more impressive is how well the filmmakers have conveyed what's going on. You can actually understand the maneuvers the pilots are making, and it really adds to the excitement of the scene. It's clear that a lot of care and attention went into making these sequences both thrilling and authentic.

@Gérard Menvusa Yeah if you knew what you are talking about you wouldn't say that, it easily can and does happen. Newer does not always mean better. Look at the 35c. Anyway, each new version has different things it's good and bad at and what ever you are in you pilot into the maneuvers your plane is best for. Take an F18, capable of very high alpha slow flight and fast turn, some newer jets cannot out rate it. It also depends on the configuration of it. An F18 that is configured for electronic warfare is called a growler, and it would not be very well equipped to dog fight etc.

    • GeorgeHotz4President
      GeorgeHotz4President 4 күн бұрын

@Gérard Menvusa 2 new fictional fighters. People here trying to act smart when those fighters werent even named anywhere in the movie, armchair analysts in youtube immediately jumped to saying it's the SU-57, an unproven Gen-4 at best. I'd say the movie was authentic enough.

Liked the movie. I'm not a pilot, but I've dome some reading. The SU 57's maneuver resulted in a serious loss of physical momentum of his airplane. Mav & Rooster's plane remained supersonic, looked like. If true, the stolen plane might have been able to out run that bad guy. There were no map references, so you really didn't know what was gong on. Interesting about the recent incident south of Crimea this last week.

It's a Cobra maneuver, has been possible in nearly all fighter planes built after 1970, nothing too spectacular
In a real dogfight though he would certainly be dead because all missiles since around the same time are built to explode on proximity not on hit

The old and new fighter dogfight scene is too cool. There's no way a Tomcat can beat a modern fighter at blind range, but in this situation it's not impossible to win. The variable wing mechanism is also perfectly displayed, and it's really a battle scene with a perfect score of 100 for all seats.😄

@Holy Crap Also, the SU57 could have just flown off and attacked from long distance. The F14 would be defenseless then. But this way it made a better movie 😉

the F-14 is a dogfighter and has a bigger advantage of speed, toughness and maneuverability newer "fighters" are stand off weapons. It was called the Tom Cat for a reason. A big tough adversary that would mix it up, take hits and still come home.

    • 💧🐍
      💧🐍 23 күн бұрын +1

@bob1986 A closer analogy would just be the bayonet, and you'd be surprised at how often soldier's aren't issued rifles that can mount them now a days. The point is that it rarely ever happens in modern combat, so while jets have a basic gun for if they find themselves in that unlikely situation, they aren't designed around dog-fighting like older jets are. The Felon in this video for example has those fancy vectored thrusters for dog-fighting, but an F-22 raptor has much more limited version of that. Yet the raptor is a 5th gen fighter and the felon would fall closer to 4.5 gen. Why? Because the raptor traded that in for a much better stealth profile. Because of this it's not unreasonable to think that an older jet could beat a more modern one in a blind range dog-fight.

    • bob1986
      bob1986 23 күн бұрын +2

@💧🐍 They still have to be capable just in case. Similar to how most ground fighting is done with drones and long range bombardment instead of dudes with rifles running into close range shooting and bayoneting each other, but troops are still trained to do that and given rifles just in case.

@BA S Agree with you. They wouldn't know everything. That's why it took Rooster a while to figure out getting the comms working (though note that he eventually did). But ejection handle loops are pretty basic information regarding an aircraft. Its not even classified information and even I or anyone in the public could find that out. He would definitely have known what those loops above his head were (again this is my opinion).

Well, they borrowed liberally from a bunch of other movies.
The test pilot bit was from Space Cowboys.
The scene where the admiral reads off his accomplishments and wonders why Mav hasn't been promoted or retired came from Down Periscope, and I was seeing bits and pieces of other movies.
The canyon dogfight was from Independence Day...I was waiting for Mav to pop his chute and blind the guy behind him.
Blowing up the entrance and dropping smart bombs was Luke Skywalker stuff...use the Force, Mav!
If only the Millennium Falcon and not Hangman had saved the day at the end...

If you think about it, this dogfight scene is basically a reminder of the first Top Gun, one of the instructors in the first movie stated that pilots relied on missiles way too much and forgot the lost art of dogfighting, and Maverick couldn’t get a victory without the missiles, so he used his guns. The instructor was right all along.

It's not realistic from a military perspective. The mission they flew could've been done easily with enough cruise missiles. Enemy also deployed so many high range AA missiles at the side of a canyon for whatever reason. The gun from the F-14 sounds absolutely not like it should. Mav saying the terrain will confusee the targeting system also doesn't really make sense since the Su-57 used IR missiles here. It would have made sense for radar guided missiles. They used a standard machine gun sound for it it seems. It was not realistic at all, but it was entertaining.

For those wondering, the signals back and forth between Maverick and the Su-57 pilot were:
"Hi there! Comms down (radio not working)."
    -- "Roll out of turn."
    "Comms down."
    -- "Heading 3-3-0."
I'm rather surprised Mav didn't know them, even if he's from another era of flight. He should have brushed-up upon returning to flight school, anyway.

Fun fact: the Su-57's top speed is Mach 2.0. The F-14's is Mach 2.5.
So, yes, actually. Were it not for their missiles, Maverick and Rooster _could've_ outran them. Lots of people assume that these new 5th gen fighters are also faster and longer ranged simply because they're more advanced, but that's not always the case. More to the point, they're often _slower_ than 4th or sometimes even 3rd gen fighters, because the fighters from back then relied on speed a lot more in lieu of stealth or electronic countermeasures.

One detail I think many people overlooked is that the two 'bad guys' were close enough to see that Maverick and Rooster had personalised helmets where as the opposition looks like they wear plain ones. This should have obviously given away the fact that they were not on the same side.

    • One-Eyed Beanie
      One-Eyed Beanie Ай бұрын

@MysticalMagic92 That's where you and I differ. You're with the group of people who prefer a cookie cutter movie, and I'm with the group that prefers some realism applies to give the movie more credibility. I think Cruise was going for the latter.

    • MysticalMagic92
      MysticalMagic92 Ай бұрын

@One-Eyed Beanie Considering it's a movie and not the real world, I'll probably take the "cookie cutter take," whatever that means. And if a movie is good, details are placed intentionally and deliberately. Top Gun is one of those movies. If there are so many other small details that are meaningful, what makes this one not? Unless you'd like to explain another meaning of the very real hand signals.

    • One-Eyed Beanie
      One-Eyed Beanie Ай бұрын

@MysticalMagic92 Sometimes the real world doesn't do subtlety, especially in warfare! You wan't the movie to be realistic or just another Hollywood cookie cutter take?

    • MysticalMagic92
      MysticalMagic92 Ай бұрын

@One-Eyed Beanie Well then that defeats the purpose of subtlety in any movie then, doesn't it? Considering they didn't fire immediately after an insufficient response to the very real military hand signals that were used, it's not an unreasonable deduction. Many movies, including this one, have small details that don't spell anything out but provide good context if noticed. What's the point of that kind of story crafting then if only the overt details matter? Plus, many "theories" are later confirmed by the director or a staff member. One could always ask and find out.

    • One-Eyed Beanie
      One-Eyed Beanie Ай бұрын

@MysticalMagic92 Well it's certainly a good theory. Given it's not real and just Hollywood, I guess we'll never me able to test the theory out. I still tend to believe the character's own words in the movie rather than the audience's comments.

@Jeremy B The F-14 "Tomcat" was retired for various reasons, some of the most important being maintenance costs and obsolescence. While the aircraft served the U.S. Navy exemplary for over over 30 years, the aircraft's complex sweep wing engineering became too expensive to manage economically.

    • David
      David 16 күн бұрын

@Jeremy B and cost, dude the F-14 needs SOOO much work per flight hour it was insane it was cheaper and in my opinion better to retire it and have the navy move onto the F-18s bc they require less than half the work per flight hour, have less moving parts (relative) and had better engine alignment so one engine flaming out is not a near-death sentence like it was on the F-14

This scene is "Like Father, Like Son" gives so much nostalgia. With Goose being in the back in the original and now Rooster. It's not the plane, it's the pilot. Everything correlates now from the originality of Goose being his best friend and now his son taking his place with coming home from the mission in a good way. I wish there was more of Maverick and Rooster's relationship as they settled.

To everyone reading this, has anyone ever told you that God loves you and has a great plan for your life? I have a quick, but very important question to ask you. If you were to die right now, do you know for a fact that you would go to Heaven? I want to tell you that the Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and that the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, and, that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved, and I want to tell you that you can make that decision today, to turn from sin and turn to Christ. If you would like to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, pray this prayer from your heart out loud to God. "Heavenly Father, I repent of sin. I receive forgiveness. I receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ is Lord, and my Savior. Come into my heart right now. I thank you for dying for me. By the blood of Jesus, right now, I am saved. In Jesus' name, Amen."

In less capable hands it would have been techno, high energy, "action" music in every scene, but Hans Zimmer adds the needed gravitas, almost like a funeral dirge in some places, which was the intent, given the plot turns.

the scene at 3:00 of the jet tilting straight up and spinning slowly as Maverick's missile flies by reminds me of seeing actual airshow video of a Russian jet doing a cobra maneuver. However, for the airshow the aircraft was going pretty slow. I wonder just how fast a jet can fly when it does that without the pilot losing control or control surfaces tearing off. While a dogfight is relatively slow, I'm not sure they go that slow.

@Kimi Räikkönen I can understand that. Felt less like an homage and more like a blatant ripoff? I felt the same with the 4th Indiana Jones movie, where they introduce "Mutt" (Shia LaBeouf). Where he comes through the smoke, riding a motorcycle? Supposedly was an homage to Marlon Brando in "The Wild One," but I found it to be undeserved in its attempt. Came off more like plagiarism to me.
