The Alumni that largely fund the sports/endowments are generally working Middle Class Americans. HBCU alum have the financial power to fund their own athletic endowments to help fund coaches salaries and team facilities... they just aren't doing it.

The key to this situation was based on a verbal agreement that he would receive a certain amount of money. When it was time to ratify the contract, that amount changed. The proof to this theory is when did they renege on the amount and when did Ed trash the school. I say he trashed the school after they reneged on the contract amount.

Exactly!! 🤷🏾‍♂️ And that's what has kept the HBCU's from competing with the larger schools for decades. Some schools have had to close down because of it. Bishop College was here in Dallas for decades but by the 1970's and on into the 90's the school struggled financially and the buildings were in horrible shape. The school shut down. It was all due to the leadership after leadership stealing the money. Paul Quinn decided to move to Dallas and took over the school but there are no athletics there now like Bishop College had before the financial troubles wiped it out.

As a recent graduate of BCU 2016-2021 (undergrad and grad)... these problems that Ed brought to the world have always been at BCU. The best thing that can happen from this is that they reconsider Ed Reed to be the HC, because anyone that gets this job now has to have those issues addressed before signing a contract. Let Reed and his donors do that that they told him they would do. And the University keeps its money to go where it's needed in other places.

I've watch Worst school (Last Chance U) and their coaches ain't publicly embarrass their employer like that. How do you know that football is what generate most money at BCC for them to be stealing? .Cookman ain't even a football school but Ed Reed had the opportunity to build that program into something better but he bashed to school now there's a likelihood that no other player would want play over there a build that school up.

Yes, the GSU situation was from 2013...it was about a month after Pres. Pogue had fired, Coach D. Williams :
See article in USA today below:
But among other things, school officials confirmed that Williams regularly tangled with the administration over private fundraising. The tipping point was apparently new flooring for the team's weight room.
Yes, Athletic Depts & Pres of Schools tangling with each
      other is not new.
But this situation at B.C. is a bigger mess because you got a never was really hired Coach encouraging kids to protest.
Where, Doug Williams was telling his former players to play football...even after he had been let go.
This wasn't a social media battle & it only lasted for a few days at GSU.

Also he did find out about it, talked about it openly and lost the job before he even had the job. The contracts weren't signed.

@Cynthia Mosley Thank you for educating me on the ways that your HBCU (and probably many others) can improve. I'm in CA so obviously not in a position to effectuate any of this change directly, but I appreciate the information. One commonality I see across institutions is that there's a lack of mainstream publicity for the good things that these schools are doing in the community. I'm writing a series of articles on CA's community colleges precisely b/c of this problem b/c admin seems uninterested in media.

      1. Improved Communications with your Alumnae Chapters promoting the University in their cities and communities. Publish a quarterly or semiannual Newsletter highlighting student and faculty chievements. Progress on facility project.
      2. Leverage Community Leaders and publicize All the positive things the University is doing in the community. Everybody wants to support a winner. AAMU has an outstanding Horticulture Dept that allows the community to get fresh vegetables during harvest season but very few are aware of this great outreach.
      3. Take advantage of govt grants and contracts. AAMU had a meeting with a senior level officer who was willing to recommend them for a govt contract worth millions but the leadership didn't bother to show up. Instead they sent a lower level staff person who was completely unprepared. Doors are opening for HBCUs but we must be ready to walk in....

HBCU's have problems that we all know but afraid to speak on. We as a community love to point blame at everyone else for our shortcoming but we dont hold ourself to the same requirment. Have family and been to most HBCU's in Atlanta, Philly and midwest like Morgan, Lincoln, Clarke Atlanta etc. We spend money on houses , cars, other B.S but we dont ever support these schools they way our racial counterparts at their respective university's. I have been hearing and seeing this for 30 years and here we are again. Glad Sanders and Reed at least giving this some light.

Ed saw the results of Prime's work at Jackson state and thought that's what all the HBCU's were doing. I guess he missed the part where Prime was putting in the work behind the scenes and outsourcing for assistance to get Jackson state lifted up. Ed was wrong to blast them like that because there's ALREADY an assumption about HBCUs but the school also needed that pressure applied.

It would’ve been more appropriate for ed to go the school administration first and discuss these issues privately. If the school knows the problems that ed has brought forth to the school and shows them these problems and they still don’t improve those bad conditions then it would’ve been appropriate to call them out on video if we don’t see those changes!

Ed brought the issues up and they did nothing hence he had to get teams together to get some cleaning done. Cleaning your campus doesn't take millions from donors as clearly shown by Ed.

Jackson State University was already upgrading it's athletics facilities ... Deion helped donated half his salary but Jackson State was already in the process of moving forward ... prime did his homework, not sure if that's the case with Ed Reed 🤷🏼‍♂️

I don't know the whole story so I disqualify my post as an opinion but I side with SS on this one: this is Missionary work. You can't have expectations of greatness, excellence in a situation like this. You're going to have to be both Superman and Clark (actually a better example would be Daredevil and Rup. Murdock).
Keep your head down and grind that ish out and transform it into a powerhouse school in athletics.

This part!!! Sums it up. Just like in education, we take jobs in underfunded schools with parents and students that don't always care, with the goal of leaving the place better than you found it. You show up everyday because you have a job and mission and a calling. Any educator can drag the public school system or you do like most of us and work with what you are given and try your best to make a difference each day. Ed Reed hasn't learned how to get along to get along. I agree with Sharpe, it is a way to handle things.

When passion surpasses diplomacy, potential issues will arise. I believe they should come together, hold a press conference and reconcile for the purpose of future change. While I understand Coach Reeds passion for change, I didn’t understand why he would bring Coach Prime into it. It reminded me of a situation where a young man’s brother was drowning in a lake. His brother jumped in to save him and they both drowned. I pray for BCU and Coach Reed.

Some times it takes calling folks out publicly for them to change, just like with Deion they would keep pushing stuff under the rug bc they thought they could get away with it.

Well Shannon as we find out now it has to do with some Tomfoolery in the upper Management so it really doesn’t have anything to do with ED going off, As a few chairmen of the board said that they felt that they would not be able to control ED Reed.

@james anderson What does being in the top 100 have to do with not needing a come up?If Deion Sanders and Ed Reed were all that they wouldn't of had to go to a HBCU schools to look for a coaching job a power 5 school would of hired them ASAP but nobody wanted either one. We'll see how much winning Deion Sanders does at Colorado. As for Ed Reed he isn't coaching material. His Instagram rant should of proved that.

    • james anderson

@David Moody You have been misinformed and really just talking? Dieon said he was doing 4 years there?? He never gave a specific time. Ed fell on his face? He never coached a game there. Celebrity athletes wanting HBCU as a come up? You are a NFL HOF top 100 player in history they don't need a come up. Sanders never won a bowl game?? Colorado says that is okay we still want you! David Moody? Go do some more research on football and less on staying emotionally attached to sports articles...

    • David Moody
      David Moody Ай бұрын

@james anderson Sorry buddy but HBCU colleges are more than just about the athletic department. Deion Sanders used Jackson State and then left after only 3 years without finishing his 4th and preaching to the choir. Ed Reed thought he could do the same with no coaching experience and fell on his face. Maybe HBCU Colleges are tired of celebrity athletes thinking they can get a job using HBCU as a come up without doing any real work and committing themselves long term. For all of Deion Sanders success at Jackson State they still didn't win any Bowl games during his 3 year tenure.
