Jukka, the giant, despite the unbearable insomnia, carried live shows on his outstanding charisma and real best showmanship... we miss you on stage BigBeardedPirateCaptain, but i feel good knowing you are healthy and not tortured by that horrible condition anymore. i know something about it myself, can't understand how you managed to go on for so long, and played so inspiring... although i wanted for you to return to band, i feel better knowing you're retired and healthy, than my selfish wish for you to play Guy always played like it is his last day on earth, giving away all energy and love for music, reliving all the songs and every emotion of song, transformed into every beat of every note... this is the drumming, when you realy can't move your eyes from him all the way, while there are also talented people on stage :)) Inspiration for many young men and women, this is the greatest achievement a musician can do...
I have said for a while now, Kai is the drummer you want in the studio. Precise, perfect, basically a human drum machine. But Jukka; he's different. Jukka is the man you want on stage. Is his drumming as perfect as Kai's? No, but you can *feel* him play the drums. He doesn't use the large, wild motions he does because he has to. He's doing them because he's making his art a show. He doesn't play the drums in concert, he *beats* the drums in concert. He's the perfect man to have at the back, his bright tan sticks glowing in contrast to a dark background as they make wild thrashing movements and whip around. Jukka is a god of metal. And while his retirement is unfortunate, he did it for all the right reasons. Same with Marko. When the rigor of touring begins sapping you of your life, the only correct thing to do is to stop. And perhaps seek medical attention.

Jukka Nevalainen is the guy who inspired me to play drums. He's my hero. There will never be another Jukka. He helped me to overcome a lot of depression and is the reason Nightwish is my favorite band. I don't think I was ever able to tell him "Thank You", and I would do almost anything to have the ability to thank him in person. His kindness and motivation and words to me, telling me to "never stop" are one of the only reasons I'm still here with us. Maybe one day I'll get to tell him my story. But until then, THANK YOU JUKKA NEVALAINEN

there is something so infectious about his drumming ... it's hard to describe, but he hits with such certainty. just an absolute rock of a drummer. i hope health has found him and that he is happy in retirement.
Jukka on drums is like listening to the sound of a runaway freight train going full blast down a mountainside in Alaska in the midst of a blizzard,- and never missing a single beat. He was, is and will remain an awesome drummer.
Insomnia is a rotten condition. You don't realize how valuable sleep is until you can't do it, and suddenly everything becomes so much more difficult. Hope Jukka is doing better now. We still miss him.
@kas29015 what I had to do took about a year and I was lucky I didn't have to work. I had to stay awake until I would fall asleep. Starting with going to sleep just after noon then every two or three weeks pushing it back 15 minutes or so until the time I could go to bed at 10 pm to 11pm at night, sleep and wake up in the morning at 7. It was hard work because diet and exercise was part of it but natural and sustainable because I haven't suffered insomnia since. I had to control what I read, the movies I watched, everything, meditating focusing on peaceful thoughts.
@Sonia Romaih i suffer from insomnia it makes you feel like your going mad, after nearly a week with about 4 hours sleep over the week, the doctor prescibed a sleeping tablet, i took it the next day my face, neck, ears was really swollen, so badly somebody thought my other half had beaten me up, because of the swelling my face looked bruised, i was ill for 3 months, i could only whisper as it had damaged my voice box, it took me another 3 months before i was back to my normal, theyve told me im not allowed to have another sleeping tablet because of the severe reaction, so about 5 years after im still suffering
@Sonia Romaih I think Jukka was just over-stressed and overworked. My insomnia is manageable sometimes but when I was working full time and going to school, it was much worse and nothing at all helped until the workload eased. 😪
@Raivyn it took me a long time to fix it with a doctor's help. My method of vodka and sleeping pills almost killed me. I couldn't work for over a year but I did it. You have to find the best way for you, talk to your doctor.

I could watch him play all day, every day. As a drummer myself, I know what kind of energy it takes to play like that. Jukka is a beast and so incredibly entertaining to watch.
My drumming Technique was VERY influenced by Jukka. It's a real shame I was not able to see him live, tough, show must go on and hopefully he can perform again and I'll be there!

15years ago, when I was 15, I was introduced to Nightwish, and that was the early days of KZclip, and Yahoo Music (anyone remember this? lol). And I was mesmerized by Jukka's drumming and outlook. I bought a bandana because he wore it lol

Picking up the drums and throwing them at the drumsticks is certainly an unconventional way to play them. That would take a lot of skill. Let me know how that works out when your trying your first drum solo haha. :)
