@Katherine Kennedy Concidering ethicity a race is the real joke here. Are nordic people a race? Are mediteranneans a race? Or is it only reserved for the hispanics?
Yeah, I felt pure embarrassment for all of them. No sense of self awareness, they are not enduring great hardship under a dictator, they are just mugs.
Well from what I’ve heard about post 2018 Tumblr the statement above sounds less oxymoronic considering how Most of the easily offended wimps moved to Twitter.
@Waylon. It's more like a scam than extortion. Extortion is where you pay me money to protect your business from me. i.e. If you don't pay me, I'll break your shit.
"Congratulations, you get another hour in the ball pit" sounds like something you'd hear a sadistic scientist say to his human test subject in a Portal-esque video game.
The best part about the "free extra hour in the ball pit" is that access to the ball pit wasn't being charged for to start with and there was no system of limiting how much time people could have anyway. They literally gave people nothing in lieu of a refund. It's like if they offered them extra access to air.
I wanna see TwitterCon Just a room full of people calling each other racists, sexists, and child predators while also BEING racist, sexists, and child predators
The saddest part of this whole shit show is that the convention didn't even supply the ball pit themselves. Some poor shmuck who saw how miserable it was brought their own ball pit to try and liven up the place. And someone pissed in it.
The way the guy said "back to my post" while turning away @9:15 was exactly like an Oblivion NPC after exhausting all dialogue options and disengaging conversation.
I didn't even realize the guy who was walking away said that when I first watched this video way back 5 years ago. I thought it was the guy recording or some friend standing nearby who said it mockingly because of how awkward it was.
Occasionally I come back to this video, and every time I'm astonished the organizers got away without lawsuits. I mean, hell, lying about partnering with a charity has to be fraud, right? Failing to keep your end of the deal with volunteers, and rewriting rules mid-con to prevent refunds, has to be a form of embezzlement, right?
Were this any other convention, the organizers would have been sued out of their ass. But since this was Tumblr in it’s entirety, the collective intelligence of its members mirrors that of toilet water.
Dashcon is actually a perfect representation of what Tumblr was back then: a bunch of different people from different places gathering within a big old mess
I was one of the fools that bought a ticket for this. Once I found out that Steam Powered Giraffe wasn’t coming I wanted a refund, that never happened. Wasted $80ish on the tickets for the convention and concert and never actually went and I’m glad I didn’t. Now I can just laugh about this train wreck.
A KZclipr named “Sarah Z” did a really in-depth 50 minute video on DashCon after watching this. She was able to find the original kickstarter and original blog posts that started it all. For example, the panels they wanted to do like “British Men with…Cheekbones” lol came from a long post about “What if Tumblr was a school?” and listed all of the different classes they could take. The con lineup basically went off that list and she shows the original list. She also has background on the 3 people that ran it and has emails and all kinds of shit. It’s well worth a 50 minute watch.
Yeah, she gave the guilt to the two orcs who abused the work of a teenager She probably could make a comment about the fact about the lack of people going there
From what I've Heard, one of the organizers, significantly Younger than the Other two, was actually trying to do stuff, while the Other two significantly more "expirienced", older organizers were wasting Money, bumming off, activly *hated* the Younger organizer and Had been incredibly rude and catty towards her. Honestly, I feel sorry for her. She tried. The Others ruined it.
Coming back to this video a few years later and gotta be honest. The lady screaming “what if they want more money” may be annoying but shes the only one who seemed to catch on 🗿
A moment that shall go down in history as a prime example of "why the internet should stay on the internet". And to think my friend almost convinced me to go to this.
The opposite is true. The hope is that, by seeing it all in real life, these people will realize how out of touch and loser-like they are and, in a moment of self-actualization, realize their obsession over internet social credit and fame was for naught.
bc the con organizers literally lied to them. instead of saying "we were dishonest and told this hotel it would be filled up for the convention but only 10% of people showed up" they said "the hotel just doesn't like you guys (games are the most oppressed class of people moment) and they're extorting us for extra money" as if there wasn't physical evidence that would prove them wrong
@beetle149 it depends. I started using Twitter only a year before the tumblr ban wave in 2018 but unless you were actively searching for political drama or gay crap you wouldn’t be bombarded with it constantly. It’s an entirely different ballgame now, there’s no doubt that kids who start using social media go straight to twitter nowadays instead of just releasing their angst on tumblr (in part due to tumblr’s lack of porn).
Please I'm begging you, cover crunchyroll expo Melbourne 2022. It's just as much of a wild ride as dashcon. We had: 8000 tickets perday sold, only 4000 were allowed in. There were people getting bitten, people fighting, an ambulance was called. Someone got kicked out after jacking it to a mlp pillow in the bathroom, there were maggots in sealed artbooks and even more fun surprises! Today people brought ballpits in honour for what was the closest we could get to dashcon 2022
plot twist: he _was_ Satan. he was just walking around hoping to do some mayhem but he saw what was happening and said "eh, whatever, I'll just have some fun instead"
@Incognito Googler cry about it nerd im the guy with the camera and I literally do this at conventions across the country. Investigate the carrot incident at acen 2012. Cons are a blight and I ruin them for the sake if humanity
“Misappropriating the gay for profit” is the most beautifully constructed sentence I’ve ever heard edit: I said "said" instead of "heard" for some reason
When they say, "We take full responsibility" they don't mean that in a meaningful way where they are actually taking responsibility. They aren't going to foot the bill or refund people's money or make it up to them in any way. They are just saying they take responsibility and then immediately take zero responsibility.
@Mark Keogh yep. Still going with that story even to this day. Everyone else's fault, never the ones who complain and yell. Only sad part is that today just because some act as if they care, they are pushing it harder on everyone.
"We take full responsibility...but it's mostly *your* fault for expecting a competently organised convention, and the fault of society/the patriarchy/etc. for us being so coddled and narcissistic we couldn't recognise that we were in over our heads."
@wdjh You just gave an example of a confidence trick. It's a form of scam in which you win someone's confidence and then exploit it in order to get something from them.
@A Goat Head Baby twitter and reddit. Atleast twitter is big enough for some fresh air to get into. Reddit nowdays is just fully what tumblr used to be back there, but even worse morally
@Amy Tattersfield Yep. People bragging about shoplifting as their way of "sticking it to the man". It became notorious on Tumblr in mid 2015, but then suddenly it came back on Twitter in early 2020
I want to feel bad for the people that got ripped off here. But at the same time Tumblr was essentially ground zero for alot of the ideas and problems that have made the past 10 years such a mess
Where are the organizers of Dashcon now? Roxanne (Schwieterman) Drake - Sales and catering manager at Hilton Garden Inn Akron Megan Eli - Consumer Affairs Analyst at Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Cain Hopkins - Principle Visual Effects Artist at Squanch Games until May 2021
@DarthBigBen honestly i kinda wrote this comment without proper knowledge of what tumblr was fr. I kinda thought it was twitter before twitter, but it’s not that really ig (can you tell i don’t use tumblr LOL) yeah idk, i sorta wish I never made this comment lmao
@J K It kinda did, but there's still a decent sized contingent that weren't there just for the porn. The remaining population mostly just do funnies, call Tumblr a hellsite, and make fun of the staff's desperate attempts to make money off of them.
I understand so little of this... why is this even a convention - isn’t that like having a convention for all users of StackOverflow, or Reddit, or Twitter? So the premise is that to come to this convention, you have to be, like, a person?
It was definitely a different time during this peak period of fandom overlap on tumblr where there was a fairly good chance that if you were part of one of these fandoms and were a tumblr user there was a pretty high chance of being a fan of a bunch of other fandoms. Like this was the era when SuperWhoLock was a thing that some people said unironically (that being the collective overlapping fandoms of Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock) It wasn't really possible to define what a Tumblr fandom was, but it was one of those things that was really enjoyed by a lot of teenagers at the time and so it was mostly just something that you knew when you saw it. Honestly Dashcon was probably what really killed that era because it was such a collective shock for a lot of naive young people who had previously assumed that they were all part of one big happy fan community where nothing bad could seriously happen. It and a few other scams basically ended that period. Tumblr kind of limped along for several years after but was a lot more insular in its various fandoms, and then the porn ban killed the website for good.
@encycl07pedia it's fun when you play with your friends but hell when you play with randoms. And if you're 20 yr old with same aged friend busy with school and stuff. It'd be hard to find a schedule where everyone free time meets up.
@P T Those are partly the reasons why I left Tumblr years ago; it's also very easy to say the wrong things that can trigger basically any group on there so I feel it's just safer (for my mental well-being) to not use the site anymore.
I think the first mistake was taking some of the most chronically insecure, mentally disturbed and socially inept people on the internet and placing them in one building, honestly I'm amazed the hotel is still standing
Watching this is a great reminder why I hated tumblr, I’d begrudgingly post some fanart since there wasn’t really anywhere else to do so, tho eventually early Twitter was okay for art at one point, the sane artists on tumblr sneaked their way over there and it was quite refreshing. That is until tumblr changed their policy on porn and a mass migration happened to Twitter, which in its current state is worse than tumblr, which should say a lot. Maybe one day there’ll be a place on the Internet that doesn’t get ruined but for now as an artist, unless you are trying to make money, posting art just isn’t worth the drama or the brain cell loss from interactions with “tumblr” personalities.
@TroudBalos I heard they tried a site like that (I don't remember the name) where they promised NSFW would be allowed, but they backpedal because otherwise they wouldn't be allowed in the Appstore, that pretty much instantly killed the interest.
@VanguardTrainer924 OR maybe there are some chill Tumblr users and you don't ever know or interact with them because you've never actually used Tumblr.
as a tumblr user since 2012, this shit is great. So many weird factions started appearing as it's users entered college and were taught weird social science bullshit (and I say this, as a social science major). There was a fun community, as always, infiltrated and completely ruined by people with narratives to push, which has seemingly become the norm for internet communities
"Part of that is on us. We are first-timers. but we intend to learn from our mistakes." Yeah "Mistakes" like putting people's money in your own pockets and not paying the bills?!
You know, the local city nerd convention has an annual attendance higher than dashcon’s highest attendance number. This thing also survived two years being cancelled due to a pandemic. People still came back when it opened up again. Yet something with a massive reach drops flat and disappears.
@Jane Doe if that’s true it’d be super lame & he got lucky the interviewer asked that question imagine dressing as a devil & saying you want to be the devil, that barely makes sense. What’s in the video though is hilarious
I'm pretty sure he thought of that ahead of time for if anyone asked him why he chose that costume... I mean, when you dressed up for halloween didn't you have a reason in your head for why you picked that costume?
i don’t understand WHY anyone would donate money to a convention with absolutely nothing. if they weren’t having fun in the first place why would they willingly pay more money for something that wasn’t even promised?
"What made you decide to dress as the prime minister of Isreal?" "You know, they say dress for the job you want." Can't even hate this guy as much as I hate the rest of Tumblr, that was a pretty funny respomse
Most of tumblr ran to twitter cuz the of no nsfw rule added to tumblr. On tumblr it was easy to avoid these people in some ways. I find it harder on twitter. And having been forced to witness what kind of people they are, I am in no way surprised that this con was, as you would say, a giant con.
what the fuck? I could've organized a better convention myself with zero social media and zero business contacts. Actually I'm just watching KZclip on my phone in my living room and it's already a better convention than dash con. Like much much better.
The great Tumblr-to-Twitter migration was one of the worst things to happen in this timeline. All the SJWs escaped their containment zone and began to interface with major brands...
Dashcon's Apology Panel In A Nutshell: So we're taking partial responsibility, but it's also your fault for what happened even though you're the people who gave us $17,000 for us to continue this convention. Hope you enjoy getting blamed for something you didn't do!
@notanincompoop lastname The way he used "Occult" was linguistically correct in both a literal, and metaphorical sense. What are you complaining about?
*It's amazing how badly this 'con' aged. It's 2022 and I honestly do not recognize a single person from the line up. Oh and I don't even know what Tumblr is either haha*
I was loose follow friends with one of the organizers of the event, Meg33k, and it was a shit show. She had zero idea how to run anything, promised a room to me and my best friend for free if we’d come as long as she got to see us so her “ship could become canon”. She shipped me and my best friend who is like a sister to me. Creeped me out so badly and I had no interest in going anyway. I watched through posts on tumblr how it all fell apart and then SHE TRIED TO GET ME TO SEND HET MONEY TO KEEP THE SHIT OPEN! ONE OF THE TEENAGE ORGANIZERS, theprofessorstrikesback, TRIED TO ALSO GET NE TO SEND MONEY! NONE OF THE PEOPLE THEY BRAGGED ABOUT BOOKING WERE EVER PAID ANYTHING SO THEY ASKED FOR THEIR PAYMENT UPFRONT AND WERE TOLD THEYD BE PAID AFTER! That’s why WTNV left, why they had to purchase their own hotel room, and why the dashcon organizers went on a smear campaign against them for months. The place this was hosted had few hotels and the one they were at didn’t have enough rooms and only rooms for the event organizers had been paid for. Meg even offered to cover my airfare and travel and hotel and food costs if I’d come. I’m betting the money for that would have come from the money to pay panelists. While it may not have STARTED as a scam, there was a lot of embezzlement and fraud that happened. It may have started as unintentional in the very very beginning, but as the months went on and more money came in, it turned into very deliberate scamming and predatory actions. And I say predatory because a lot of teenagers were put in charge of things like organizing schedules and security and running the “artists alley” type space. They were told they were volunteers to avoid paying them and these kids had been halfway groomed by the adults into becoming little sycophants that would flatter and praise them online and do anything they said. These kids flew to a brand new town where they knew no one, were meeting adults they’d met online for the first time, and working for them without being paid. And made to feel they should be grateful just to be in their presence. And then Meg and her friends pocketed thousands, got reported to the IRS iirc or they were sued. She used that money to continue not having a job so she could keep being a “professional writer” who had one shitty book that no one bought and relied on her husband for money. And after she was venomous to anyone who wanted refunds and attacked anyone who spoke about the event even mildly poorly.
I remember this going down live. It was certainly a hell of a time and it was fun to be on the side who knew this would be a disaster from the beginning.
I feel like the hunger games hand thing really just solidifies the fact that these people live in the media they like and don't/can't even face their reality
I love how, when raising the money, they couldn't say, "Please donate to continue this quality event," so they settle for "The hotel wants to stop us, for whatever reason most enrages you, so give us money to keep it open."
All "cringe" aside, it is absolutely criminal what happened here. Those poor kids were unwitting victims, and the organizers knew they could get away with exploiting them.
@VictorE "If you don't agree with me you're not worth talking to" holy hell seek therapy bro this is not how interacting with other members of your species works.
the fact they said "if you volunteer as a staff member we'll comp your hotel" to TEENAGERS who were subsequently locked out of their hotel rooms after working at a shit show for like 8 hours... i cant believe they tried to pull a "see you next year" and got away with it.
You think this event is what cause Twitter to get the whole "I'm always the victim" mindset? Because although they were from Tumblr, they all totally jumped ship to Twitter.
If I ever go to a convention and the people running the event says “we need X amount of money or the event is cancelled” I am walking right out the door and NEVER looking back
Follow-up Q&A to answer some of your questions: kzclip.org/video/5vfZqByi808/бейне.html
did you ever get the Dashcon DVD file?
Did you ever find a copy of the DVD?
you know did you ever get the dashcon dvd?
Las pegasus Unicon?
A Gay hispanic man being called a straight white male is the most tumblr thing i have ever heard
Step one: pretend to be Hispanic and gay
Step two: ????
Step three: Profit?
@Grendel - So?
@Katherine Kennedy Concidering ethicity a race is the real joke here. Are nordic people a race? Are mediteranneans a race? Or is it only reserved for the hispanics?
the moment when they all raise their fingers hunger games style is so iconic and pathetic I swear to god I can’t breathe
@Pedro Fellipe This comment is spot on 🤣🤣
Much like George Floyd
@Luke Leonetti My god, you're absolutely right. I can picture it! It's actually worse than the Hunger Games salute.
Yeah, I felt pure embarrassment for all of them. No sense of self awareness, they are not enduring great hardship under a dictator, they are just mugs.
Doesn't look like a failure to me. This is a perfect, PERFECT representation of Tumblr incarnate. Anything better would have been inaccurate.
@gnbman yeah :D they pocketed 10k for themselves. I don't blame them, I would do the same.
@Gustavo I don't remember. The video probably tells that.
@gnbman wasn't it all scam at the end? Those people seems like perfect to scam.
“A group of tumblr users come up with a great idea”
That statement alone is an oxymoron
Well from what I’ve heard about post 2018 Tumblr the statement above sounds less oxymoronic considering how Most of the easily offended wimps moved to Twitter.
@RollCake Cookie Modern Tumblr is the closest thing to hell I can find with few exceptions.
Your*
To be fair tho, most funny posts you seen on the internet come form tumblr 😬
Honestly that one girl that screams this is extortion was SCARILY ACCURATE
@Waylon. It's more like a scam than extortion. Extortion is where you pay me money to protect your business from me. i.e. If you don't pay me, I'll break your shit.
DAMN
@greg77389 the definition of extortion is the practice of obtaining something, especially money, through force or threats.
Extortion means "pay me money or I'll hurt you"
The irony of singing "We Are the Champions," while getting extorted is palpable.
It's easy to "con" at a failed CONvention
"Congratulations, you get another hour in the ball pit" sounds like something you'd hear a sadistic scientist say to his human test subject in a Portal-esque video game.
And for his good behavior he gets an hour in the canoe
He gets to sit in the canoe for up to an hour
I read this in principle scudworth from clone high's voice
@J. Baxter it actually does sound like something that Glados would say
They weren't wrong: Dashcon was a con, and the organizers dashed away.
That was my favorite joke that came out of it
"what do u call a quick scam
a dash con"
Dashing rogues with their dashcons
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
LOL
That ballpit carried the whole convention
Yes urine is a liquid and liquids are quite buoyant
Ball pit walked so Twitchcon Foam Pit could run
That ballpit really tied the room together
....and those bastards pissed in it
Best part: they didnt organize the ballpit. Some poor guy brought his own
But it turned out the pit was full of balls
"we're all gonna sigh together okay? one, two, three.."
"give me back my money"
i cannot put into words that i laughed so hard i started vomiting
Looks like you did just fine.
somehow i expected cartman being there n shouting that phrase lmao
So funny, I replayed that part a few times. That guy was DONE.
@Masterraccoon you don’t mess with golden time
The best part about the "free extra hour in the ball pit" is that access to the ball pit wasn't being charged for to start with and there was no system of limiting how much time people could have anyway. They literally gave people nothing in lieu of a refund. It's like if they offered them extra access to air.
They also didn't even own the ball pit if i recall
@Frank Marano they’re bronies
And the ball pit wasn't even theirs to begin with lol
And why would you spend more than 5 minutes in the ball pit anyway? Like there’s nothing to do.
@Jonathon Cowley-Thom coping intensifies even to this day
I wanna see TwitterCon
Just a room full of people calling each other racists, sexists, and child predators while also BEING racist, sexists, and child predators
And It Will Only Happen On 4/20 Because Funny Number And It's Also Hitler's Birthday
The saddest part of this whole shit show is that the convention didn't even supply the ball pit themselves. Some poor shmuck who saw how miserable it was brought their own ball pit to try and liven up the place.
And someone pissed in it.
It's a Tumblr con of course someone pissed in it.
Wow it’s so funny to learn that this isn’t true, it was actually rented. Nessie has talked about this
HAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
@Gravelord Sneedobant????
@Ananda Daffakek???
The way the guy said "back to my post" while turning away @9:15 was exactly like an Oblivion NPC after exhausting all dialogue options and disengaging conversation.
I mean to be fair, Tumblr users ARE NPCs...
I didn't even realize the guy who was walking away said that when I first watched this video way back 5 years ago. I thought it was the guy recording or some friend standing nearby who said it mockingly because of how awkward it was.
Yeah, disjointed, awkward, and incongruent with any form of social interaction. As to be expected from a tumblr user.
When your local anime convention is better organised and has more visitors than one for tumblr, a multi million user page.
Because weebs know they won't be the only weirdos around other weebs
to be fair they did say this was their first time doing this.
a billion people like anime 🤣
Same will happen with pinterest
I mean this convention wasn’t organised by tumblr the company it was effectively just some random people who decided to do it lol
I know this is an old post, but the reason there probably weren’t any lawsuits was because overall the main attendees for this were teenagers
Were this any other convention, the organizers would have been sued out of their ass. But since this was Tumblr in it’s entirety, the collective intelligence of its members mirrors that of toilet water.
@Lord of Dawn Using such a gender normative cis het word like intelligence. SMH.
Don't expect much intelligence from tumblr users
"And the con continues."
I swear that's a double entendre.
Oh, it definitely is!
I think you mean double enCONdre
I was a fan of it.
Shakespeare has been real quiet since that dropped
@Child Of Flesh ,w,e5,r,ew,-
Can't wait for Internet Historian to make a video on the failure of Twitchcon in a few years' time
probably less shallow overused jokes about lgbt are possible in context of twitchcon so it likely wont happen
Or the failure of your parents marriage.
@OnlyLeblancCoffee I didn't watch twitch con cause I actually have a life and touch grass... they had CP IN THERE CONVENTION!?! WTF?!
@petrox859
Several people injured, cp, SA, harassment at panels among other things wasn’t so bad?
When you realize that furries organized a better event than Tumblr users.
They organised it better… it didn’t end up much better, but it was _organised_ better
are you somehow implying that tumblr users aren't furries?
@Robyn cap
And yet not acting like a Tumblr user is the norm for democrats. We can already see how them running an entire country is panning out lmao
Dashcon is actually a perfect representation of what Tumblr was back then: a bunch of different people from different places gathering within a big old mess
And now Dashcon is the perfect representation of democrats now lol
@tausiftaha12 no idea what you're talking about since the rest of the replies arent loading for me?? but aight ig
@metaroom's top 0.5% listener on spotify it is very much a fact.
@metaroom's top 0.5% listener on spotify 🤨what!?, Spit it out son! 😤
@NutterInHerButter 💀????
If you wasted money in this obvious scam, then you don't get to laugh.
Well some people spend $100+ for college courses, you learned a lesson for $80. I'd say that's a steal.
@Cheese and Crackers what did he say?
What the heck happened in this comment section?
A KZclipr named “Sarah Z” did a really in-depth 50 minute video on DashCon after watching this. She was able to find the original kickstarter and original blog posts that started it all. For example, the panels they wanted to do like “British Men with…Cheekbones” lol came from a long post about “What if Tumblr was a school?” and listed all of the different classes they could take. The con lineup basically went off that list and she shows the original list. She also has background on the 3 people that ran it and has emails and all kinds of shit. It’s well worth a 50 minute watch.
Tumblr as a school
Even Junko would think that's to much murder and despair
Funny how they'd do that panel despite all their screeching about objectifying women lmao
Yeah, she gave the guilt to the two orcs who abused the work of a teenager
She probably could make a comment about the fact about the lack of people going there
From what I've Heard, one of the organizers, significantly Younger than the Other two, was actually trying to do stuff, while the Other two significantly more "expirienced", older organizers were wasting Money, bumming off, activly *hated* the Younger organizer and Had been incredibly rude and catty towards her.
Honestly, I feel sorry for her. She tried. The Others ruined it.
@Esmee Campbell uh no
well you know what they say; some people don't grow up, they simply grow older
Coming back to this video a few years later and gotta be honest. The lady screaming “what if they want more money” may be annoying but shes the only one who seemed to catch on 🗿
The one-eyed woman in the land of the blind.
Oh yeah I see it on your google profile. The evolution of Fennekin is awesome.
I did change my profile from Zorua earlier today, must've not been updated
My icon is Braixen. Zorua is pretty cool too,
One with the Delphox? Thanks ^~^ BC?
Imagine how bad the room stunk after the collective sigh.
Oh God, ew 🤢😂
Imagine how bad the room stunk before the collective sigh
Underrated comment 😂
🤣🤣🤣 brilliant
Gotta love how they all acted like they were being oppressed by the hotel somehow
bc the con organizers literally lied to them.
instead of saying "we were dishonest and told this hotel it would be filled up for the convention but only 10% of people showed up" they said "the hotel just doesn't like you guys (games are the most oppressed class of people moment) and they're extorting us for extra money" as if there wasn't physical evidence that would prove them wrong
By that point, it was probably just reflex.
Like.
force of habit ig
Just remember all these people left Tumblr and ruined Twitter
@beetle149 it depends. I started using Twitter only a year before the tumblr ban wave in 2018 but unless you were actively searching for political drama or gay crap you wouldn’t be bombarded with it constantly. It’s an entirely different ballgame now, there’s no doubt that kids who start using social media go straight to twitter nowadays instead of just releasing their angst on tumblr (in part due to tumblr’s lack of porn).
Twitter was always worse than Tumblr
@Luciano Martinez ain’t no way you just said daddy elon unironically
I’m surprised 4-Chan didn’t have a gigantic field day for thousands of years
there was a /pol/ meetup once lol
It actually went better than this
@NightsOfTerror they *did* have one a *loooonggggg* time ago before, their last one was done in 2015-or-something?
Imagine a 4chan con I get shivers of fear thinking about
Please I'm begging you, cover crunchyroll expo Melbourne 2022. It's just as much of a wild ride as dashcon.
We had:
8000 tickets perday sold, only 4000 were allowed in.
@seva yep. Someone got bitten..
@seva yep a volunteer got bitten by an attendee
@seva Australia is just British Florida
people got BITTEN?!?!?!?
At least that one guy dressed as Satan had a sense of humor
What do you mean “dressed”?
plot twist: he _was_ Satan. he was just walking around hoping to do some mayhem but he saw what was happening and said "eh, whatever, I'll just have some fun instead"
Woah now, cool it with the antisemitic remarks. Clearly, that’s the Prime Minister of Israel.
@Incognito Googler cry about it nerd im the guy with the camera and I literally do this at conventions across the country. Investigate the carrot incident at acen 2012. Cons are a blight and I ruin them for the sake if humanity
That dubstep "jump in the pit" montage is just absolute fucking perfection, I love that shit 😂
That is actually based on a dashcon video in 2014-15, that is brought up to date by replacing a lot of very obviously 2014 humor.
What's funny about the free hour in the ball pit implies that they were actually charging people to use the ball pit. That alone is ridiculous!!!
An "apology panel" is the most tumblr thing imaginable.
Where no meaningful apology was actually given. Really can't get more Tumblr than that.
Imagine basing your entire identity around a social media platform you use
@Esmee Campbell most of them are fine
“Misappropriating the gay for profit” is the most beautifully constructed sentence I’ve ever heard
edit: I said "said" instead of "heard" for some reason
@david splooge1 that's the Jeff Bezos diet
@Appalachia Brauchfrau how you do, fellow gays
The “They say dress for the job you want.”-Guy was kinda cool and chill though. Witty and snappy response to having a camera shoved up his face.
This is exactly what I'd expect a tumblr convention to be.
@Abaven Dar'locke i get some of my best memes from tumblr ngl
@An Intruder what side of tumblr are you on 💀
@wdjh it doen't deserve the spot even
@Mark García-Wilson Why didn't you class it as an SCP then?
When they say, "We take full responsibility" they don't mean that in a meaningful way where they are actually taking responsibility. They aren't going to foot the bill or refund people's money or make it up to them in any way. They are just saying they take responsibility and then immediately take zero responsibility.
A corporate apology, sounds about right.
“But they raised the money, and the con continues”
*OOOOOOOOH I JUST GOT THAT!*
@Pun Goblin username checks out
@Pun Goblin wholesome lad, may the force be with you
@wdjh You just gave an example of a confidence trick. It's a form of scam in which you win someone's confidence and then exploit it in order to get something from them.
@Eduardo Lindner "con" can mean both "convention" and "confidence trick"
Man I miss when tumblr was this huge punching bag for the rest of the internet to make fun of
@A Goat Head Baby twitter and reddit. Atleast twitter is big enough for some fresh air to get into. Reddit nowdays is just fully what tumblr used to be back there, but even worse morally
We still have Reddit, Twitter and TikTok for that.
@DoodleRoar nah twitters a punching bag
Now Reddit has that role
@Amy Tattersfield Yep. People bragging about shoplifting as their way of "sticking it to the man". It became notorious on Tumblr in mid 2015, but then suddenly it came back on Twitter in early 2020
I want to feel bad for the people that got ripped off here. But at the same time Tumblr was essentially ground zero for alot of the ideas and problems that have made the past 10 years such a mess
Not sure we can but all the blame, or even most on tumblr. IMO, Twitter deserves most of it.
Tumblr is the reason wokeness exists
"Let's all sigh together"... I wish I could just call it cringe, but fuck, that might be one of the most disrespectful thing I ever heard.
Where are the organizers of Dashcon now?
Roxanne (Schwieterman) Drake - Sales and catering manager at Hilton Garden Inn Akron
Megan Eli - Consumer Affairs Analyst at Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission
Cain Hopkins - Principle Visual Effects Artist at Squanch Games until May 2021
They knew their audience
Brutal
I expected to hear more "fck you, give me a refund"
“This is legit me crying. You can come see me in person if you’d like” is the biggest “I need attention” sentence I have ever seen . 😂
a certified Tumblr classic
It was the only thing at the con worth seeing
Its Tumblr, what do you expect?
It's on brand, to be fair
can we talk about how they made Night Vale sound like a villain?
Well, yeah. Did you expect anything else out of tumblrinas?
How dare they want compensation for their time and effort.
Always someone elses fault
Coming back to enjoy this in a new way now that Twitch Con has officially had a worse pit.
I like how Tumblr is still alive if you consider someone in a vegetative state alive
Tumblr is like that cockroach in WALL-E, bouncing back up every time it gets smushed
@DarthBigBen honestly i kinda wrote this comment without proper knowledge of what tumblr was fr. I kinda thought it was twitter before twitter, but it’s not that really ig (can you tell i don’t use tumblr LOL)
yeah idk, i sorta wish I never made this comment lmao
I stick around for the fanart.
@J K It kinda did, but there's still a decent sized contingent that weren't there just for the porn. The remaining population mostly just do funnies, call Tumblr a hellsite, and make fun of the staff's desperate attempts to make money off of them.
I figured it would have been dead soon after they cracked down on adult entertainment
Oh God I can't even imagine what a Twittercon would be like
A Royal Rumble with all participants drunk?
“We’re all gonna sigh together” is something the annoying 9th grade teacher says after assigning a project just before a holiday
Imagine doing holiday projects (i almost failed 3 classes)
"Now we all need to sigh together kids"
EXACTLY
Wowzer
Imagine
The world's first Reddit convention
@Yoyolons "me no like website so anything positive about it has 2 b fake!!! 😭😭😭😭"
@sydur graham "successful" yeah right
@CyniCat good one lol
@sydur graham Found the Redditor
Reddit has actually put together a ton of successful meet ups. You just don't hear about them because they weren't utter failures like dashcon lol
I understand so little of this... why is this even a convention - isn’t that like having a convention for all users of StackOverflow, or Reddit, or Twitter? So the premise is that to come to this convention, you have to be, like, a person?
Lmao imagine a convention for stackoverflow users. Would just be booths for ppl to ask more coding questions lol.
@Outgunned Unicum Yeah, there's a lot of Programming Conventions and congresses, it actually makes sense
It was definitely a different time during this peak period of fandom overlap on tumblr where there was a fairly good chance that if you were part of one of these fandoms and were a tumblr user there was a pretty high chance of being a fan of a bunch of other fandoms.
Like this was the era when SuperWhoLock was a thing that some people said unironically (that being the collective overlapping fandoms of Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock)
It wasn't really possible to define what a Tumblr fandom was, but it was one of those things that was really enjoyed by a lot of teenagers at the time and so it was mostly just something that you knew when you saw it.
Had to come back to this after seeing Among Us add a new nameplate: a ball pit, named "Extra Hour Please"
@encycl07pedia i thought the dialog choices were for console/ minor players
@encycl07pedia it's fun when you play with your friends but hell when you play with randoms.
And if you're 20 yr old with same aged friend busy with school and stuff. It'd be hard to find a schedule where everyone free time meets up.
@encycl07pedia it’s both
GG
I wonder if these Dashcon organizers are still using Tumblr. They'd probably been screwed over by the bad publicity by now.
@P T Those are partly the reasons why I left Tumblr years ago; it's also very easy to say the wrong things that can trigger basically any group on there so I feel it's just safer (for my mental well-being) to not use the site anymore.
I'm pretty sure they infest Twitter now
Probably a lot less since Tumblr’s parent company made them get rid of nudity.
I think the first mistake was taking some of the most chronically insecure, mentally disturbed and socially inept people on the internet and placing them in one building, honestly I'm amazed the hotel is still standing
That ball pit really tied the room together.
The big lebowski 😂
Pissing in it was perhaps going too far
Where's the money, lebowski?
Wow. I applaud this reference, it is so spot on
I love the comically large amount of homestuck cosplayers, it really just screams 2014
@o a board of peace if you will
My favorite Idol has an account there and I'm worried that she was chased out of that website
@TroudBalos I heard they tried a site like that (I don't remember the name) where they promised NSFW would be allowed, but they backpedal because otherwise they wouldn't be allowed in the Appstore, that pretty much instantly killed the interest.
Failed high scale events have now become my new binge worthy topic thanks to you Historian. Here's to consuming useless facts instead of sustenence
I like how saying that they get a "free hour in the ball pit" implies they were charging to use the ball pit
Everytime i come back here i always wonder if, one day, someone will finally manage to send HI the official dashcon dvd
"Dress for the job you want" that guy was chill got mad respect
Devil is ironically the most chill guy there.
@VanguardTrainer924
OR maybe there are some chill Tumblr users and you don't ever know or interact with them because you've never actually used Tumblr.
that was honestly a top tier response lol
He was likely a 4chan sleeper cell
as a tumblr user since 2012, this shit is great. So many weird factions started appearing as it's users entered college and were taught weird social science bullshit (and I say this, as a social science major). There was a fun community, as always, infiltrated and completely ruined by people with narratives to push, which has seemingly become the norm for internet communities
"We're all going to sigh together OK?"
Because ordering your audience to play Simon Says with you is a GREAT way to placate them.
A group of tumblrs in one place is something that gives ne nightmares
"Part of that is on us. We are first-timers. but we intend to learn from our mistakes."
Yeah "Mistakes" like putting people's money in your own pockets and not paying the bills?!
I love the implication that there’d be a “next time”
You know, the local city nerd convention has an annual attendance higher than dashcon’s highest attendance number.
This thing also survived two years being cancelled due to a pandemic. People still came back when it opened up again.
Yet something with a massive reach drops flat and disappears.
“they say dress for the job you want” was actually a very fast witty response lol
@blank Damn, I'm not sure what... Mayo scapegoat go!
@piss sommelier understandable, they have to defend the head of their religion
@Jane Doe if that’s true it’d be super lame & he got lucky the interviewer asked that question
imagine dressing as a devil & saying you want to be the devil, that barely makes sense. What’s in the video though is hilarious
I'm pretty sure he thought of that ahead of time for if anyone asked him why he chose that costume... I mean, when you dressed up for halloween didn't you have a reason in your head for why you picked that costume?
@wheremybike no, the analysis of comedy is not funny, but it does require wit
i don’t understand WHY anyone would donate money to a convention with absolutely nothing. if they weren’t having fun in the first place why would they willingly pay more money for something that wasn’t even promised?
@Fatal_263 I mean it was great for peeing in.
Sunk cost fallacy maybe. Like, they're already there, so they might as well.

"What made you decide to dress as the prime minister of Isreal?"
"You know, they say dress for the job you want."
Can't even hate this guy as much as I hate the rest of Tumblr, that was a pretty funny respomse
@Amanda0128 kosher
@Amanda0128 All your comments have zero upvotes and everybody else has at least two. Seethe harder, Jew.
@Amanda0128 The fact that you're here, 4 years later, getting mad about it makes it even funnier.
I can't believe dash-con is almost a decade old, I miss this era so much
You know the party is over when you start singing Queen collectively.
That’s what they thought too
.
@the49thline does tax evasion count
Cosmic Turban I had my two dogs and myself. between a Laptop, PS4 and switch. our convention was by far superior
The great Tumblr-to-Twitter migration was one of the worst things to happen in this timeline.
All the SJWs escaped their containment zone and began to interface with major brands...
feminists*
Boo
Dashcon's Apology Panel In A Nutshell: So we're taking partial responsibility, but it's also your fault for what happened even though you're the people who gave us $17,000 for us to continue this convention. Hope you enjoy getting blamed for something you didn't do!
I genuinely for the first time in my 26 years, dropped my jaw in disbelief when they did the Hunger Games BS.
the hunger games thing and the singing reminds me how occult people act when they are easily manipulated lol
@notanincompoop lastname The way he used "Occult" was linguistically correct in both a literal, and metaphorical sense. What are you complaining about?
@notanincompoop lastname it was a statement in similarity of actions, not a description of definition, you bumkin....
That's not what occult means. Learn what words mean before you use them.
The "dress for the job you want" always makes me laugh.
The ballpit is the saddest thing I've ever seen. It just makes me feel dread whenever I see it
it's so creepy seeing a ball pit in a giant drab empty room. it looks like a level of the backrooms lmao
@Sabrina Tschäß ☹
I deflate when I see it
@hello there a place for refugees lol
15 dollar value for $12,000 with an added bonus of paying for the sad sad sad hotel conference room. that ballpit was icing on the cake.
“And the con continues” I see what you did there.
Being forced to apologize was probably the first time any of them had been taken to task for their actions
Whenever Internet Historian tells you that someone's come up with a brilliant idea, you know you're in for a treat.
I can feel the excitement, being replaced by lukewarm realization and then, angry disappointment.
What a riot.
*It's amazing how badly this 'con' aged. It's 2022 and I honestly do not recognize a single person from the line up. Oh and I don't even know what Tumblr is either haha*
@Grace Nakimura Considering their text is all in bold it might have been sarcasm
How can you say it aged badly and in the same breath admit you don't know what tumblr is
*They say dress for the job you want.*
What a legend.
Smoothness: 100
Taylor even better, I hope he got his extra hour before the pit was pissed in
The fact he took that in stride and joked along with it makes me feel bad for him.
I hope he got another hour in the pit.
I came across the con runner on TikTok. She was VERY young at the time. She seems to be in a good mental/emotional place now.
It was certainly a hell of a time and it was fun to be on the side who knew this would be a disaster from the beginning.
being an active peak tumblr user during this is still one of the funniest online experiences I've had
saaame
The guy at 1:35 has to be one of the best parts of this video. The quick comeback and rolling with the joke was amazing.
1:18
i like how the blue haired girl had to take a second to remember what the Tumblr take on Israel was
I feel like the hunger games hand thing really just solidifies the fact that these people live in the media they like and don't/can't even face their reality
Funny, coming from someone with the name "Yossarian-Lives."
Funny, coming from someone with the name "Yossarian-Lives."
HOW EMBARRASSING IS IT ISTG
@Emerald Lance damn you gotta take a deep breath after this long ass sentence!
Damn... this was funny when it happened 7 years ago, but now it's aged like fine wine.
The “dress for the job you want” guy actually seemed pretty cool lul
A grand historical moment from the Tumblr community.
I love how, when raising the money, they couldn't say, "Please donate to continue this quality event," so they settle for "The hotel wants to stop us, for whatever reason most enrages you, so give us money to keep it open."
"We're all gonna sigh together."
_Si-_
"Gimme back my money!"
Happy 7th year anniversary to Dashcon! May it never happen again!
🥳🥳🥳
If I ever go to a convention and the people running the event says “we need X amount of money or the event is cancelled” I am walking right out the door and NEVER looking back
