I have lived in Japan for coming up on 39 years and have obliquely participated in television a lot both in front of the camera but much more on the production side. I am even what some people call an actor, and still for the exact reasons this intrepid journalist outlines so succinctly and accurately I have never been able to force myself to do all the fake bullshit that you are inevitably called upon to do if you are going to be onscreen enough to be widely known in Japanese media. I can't stand Japanese media and I can't understand why Japanese people tolerate it. That said most of my income for the past 39 years has come from participating in it.

Japanese TV reminds me of American spanish TV channels. A lot of it is sourced from central and south american countries so I guess it's south american TV. Drama shows too. It's like they're stuck in the 80s and 90s, lol.

I learned how to use chopsticks there. In my first restaurant, I used chopsticks because that is all they had. I never used chopsticks before and the few people who were there watched me while I struggled with it. When i think about it it was funny.
